I have an NVIDIA graphics card and use the proprietary Nvidia driver for Fedora (13).Usually when I connect another monitor/screen - I change the setup through the nvidia-settings GUI. However, I find this a little bit cumbersome, and would like to do it with a simple click on a button or something like that.Hence:Can I somehow change my screen configuration through a bash script.

I've been looking (some say "lurking") around these forums for a bit after I loaded it up and let me say: Leigh, You're an amazing young man! Keep up the great work! I've a question: I've just put together a hobby computer: Pentuim 4, with 1 Gig of RAM and a Nvidia Geforce5700LE. When I install Fedora from a fresh install, everything works great: nice screen resolution, good graphics, etc. but no 3d or acceleration, so I'm very limited on my programs.
So I decided I need to upgrade my Nvidia driver. I followed Leigh's Nvidia setup guide after installing Fedora 12 (all four steps!) everything seemed to go fine, but when I reboot, I quickly see the Nvidia splash screen, but the screen then goes blank. Well, not really blank, I can see what appears to be a kind of cross-hatch pattern, plus I can see what should be my mouse cursor on screen (it also is a square shaped pattern). I suspect it may be at a screen resolution that my monitor doesn't support. Once there, the computer pretty much doesn't do anything else. Usually I can break into the x driver loading and go to the command prompt, but this latest time I can't even do that.
having trouble setting up a dual monitor from my Dell xps laptop using an HDMI port. It dual boots onto Ubuntu 10.04. The computer has a Nvidia GeForce GT 555M with Optimus graphics card I need to make sure I have not installed the restricted drivers. So I think what is happening right now is that the graphics are shown off the integrated graphics card. This is my output from <lspci | grep VGA>

The forum recommends to use this program called Bumblebee but I have had some issues with that in the past. Is there somehow I can setup my dual display while staying on Ubuntu 10.04 and not installing Bumblebee? I have researched into setting up dual display walkthroughs before but they all concentrate on nvidia or ATI configurations.

when i start uubuntu it automatically goes to tty with out letting me login. then when i press startx it says:

I've seen a lot of posts related to problems with GNOME 3 shell and nvidia drivers but I have yet to find anything that seems to fix my problem. At this point, the laptop, a Dell D850, boots just fine all the way to the gdm login screen. When I log in, the background and menus initialize and the mouse can be moved around, but nothing works---I can't click on anything, Alt-F1 does nothing, and I have to switch to a VT and shut-down X. I've uninstalled all things nvidia and now I have a working laptop, so long as I use Classic with Compiz.
I upgraded two other hosts, but both had ATI graphics cards; they worked without a hitch. I'm regretting having decided to upgrade this laptop
I overwrote this laptop from an Ubuntu installation to Fedora 15 (Gnome 3 doesn't work, in fallback mode) and unfortunately the theme is messed up. I just installed gnome-shell and i cant seem to find anyway to customize anything, esp. the task bar, the clock, et cetera
is there a preferences gui or something that I cant find? I feel like i'm trying to use a mac....
It seems pretty sweet, but, i dont know how to get used to not having a window list... i dont wanna pull up the "activities window" or alt tab every time i want switch windows (esp when my hand is used to just moving to the top of the screen and clicking on the right window...
There's this autohide taskbar at the bottom of the screen, but i cant for the life of me figure out what it's for, or how to put things on it....

I cannot change my resolution guys. I have installed the nvidia drivers but still; I cannot go higher than 1024x768. All I want is 1280x1024 or higher. But it makes it hard to have them change their passwords. I thought that if we had a web page set up where the user could enter their username, old password, new password and confirmed new password, that this would be the easiest solution.

I upgraded from fedora 6 to fc10 using a net-inst iso. Everything went great however when I rebooted gnome wouldn't start up and there were other error messages, however thats not my current question. I figured id login as root, I put my pw in and the screen briefly flashes and then back to login prompt. The flash is a message saying something about no shell. Same occurs when trying to logon to my main user account. I can boot to single user and see that all my partitions are there and the data is there. My password file has the shell at the end of the entries.

I was trying to get matlab working on FC 11 and I ran into libc.so.6 issues, so I put an older file libc.2.3.1.so in /lib/tls/ directory and created a symbolic link libc.so.6 to see if the application would work. Unfortunately at the same time the system did some updates and the system hung, so I ended up rebooting, but now it gets stuck at boot screen (after grub) with a kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init.I just need a way to get to the directror /lib/tls and delete the link and the older .so file I threw in there. How do I get this accomplished. I cannot get even to a shell from the boot screen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe problem relates only to the configuration of services in text mode ("setup", part of the setuptool package). The setuptool package is "setuptool-1.19.4-2.fc9.x86_64". There is no "Services configuration" menu when I start "setup". The tools listed in the setup window are:
- Authentication configuration
- Firewall configuration
- Keyboard configuration

IMHO, the reason I don't have a services configuration tool is the missing services configuration files "98services" and/or 99"services" (or something like that) from the setuptool's configuration directory. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) Can someone please let me know what information should be in those two files, and what are the correct file names? Without them I cannot change the services on this computer. (FYI, the GUI (system-config-services) works, however, I need to run this computer in text mode.)
I just did an update of my Fedora 11 machine, and it required a restart. After restart it will not try to boot up or even show a splash screen. The only thing I see is a black screen with a flashing white cursor.Any ideas on what I can check so I can boot up into Linux again.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI am just trying out Fedora for the first time (coming from Gentoo and later Ubuntu).
So far everything works fine, but I have one problem with the gnome display manager (gdm), which is responsible for the initial graphical login screen.
My graphics adapter (nvidia) has two dvi-outputs, and i use them both. One is my primary display, the other one is used for my projector (watching films etc).
When starting Fedora, unluckily, the gdm login screen is shown on the wrong output (the projector, which is only occasionally turned on). I'd like it to be shown on the primary display.
Now I learned that gdmsetup disappeared in this release of Fedora. How can I achieve this goal now? What I found out through research is that there is a config-file (/etc/gdm/custom.conf), which can be used to configure gdm. But I don't have a clue how to. I found the following official documentation: [URL].
NVidia FX5200: nvidia-glx-173xxx The problem is that, when I install it, upon rebooting, I get a black screen with one blinking underscore at the top left corner. I somehow managed to get into the console and .. there's something wrong with the video card driver ( no way I could catch it into a picture ).
This was the exact reason why my Fedora CD was laying on the corner for months - I remember having this issue earlier as well.
Is there a way to fix it or at least, recover from a broken video card driver ?
So I installed the Nvidia driver on a fresh install of F13 & rebooted in the image I've attached. So, my question, what should I be posting here to fix it? Xorg.conf? Honestly, the one thing I've never had an issue with in Linux is video drivers. I've always run Nvidia cards & they've always just worked. So I'm at a loss for the first time in a long time. I also tried googling, but I have no idea what to google.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning 2.6.33.3-85.fc13.i686 and just purchased a AGP 7600GT 512 video card. Searched around and found:I did the rpm, yum, sed, mv & dracut as directed. Then I rebooted. When it starts up (all the normal bios messages) and then I 1/2" bar across the bottom of the screen with Fedora 13 on the right end and .... nothing. Just sits there. I've used my Live-13 disk and tried to reverse the procedure but I'm starting to think it's the video drivers.

And i have home encryoted so i get also beautifull screen (with cute lock icon) to type my password in. But as soon as i install nvidia drivers this screen is gone, instead i have this ugly progress bar to show me how boot is progressing and when i asked for password i get this out of resolution konsolesque screen. How can i get back my beautiful boot screen.

Well, I just got back from the Pepsi Center after watching the Denver Nuggets NBA basketball team look silly against the Dallas Mavericks. 4.5 hours later and I still have a black screen. Was it Einstein who said, "it is insanity to do the same thing, the same way, over and over and expect a different result"? I feel I will been testing that hypothesis soon.

When my notebook boots I get a high screen resolution. However, when I login it seems to go to a lower resolution that is not clear. I think this all started when I updated to a new kernel. So I reinstalled the nvida drivers using leigh's guide. However, I still can't seem to get it to display correctly.

I ran the latest updates this week (including the new kernel and the new kmod-nvidia update) and I got a blank screen when I rebooted. (I get the Fedora bar across the bottom of the screen, then after that the screen goes blank) I assume this is when the xorg server is trying to start..
I went into single user mode , backed up and then removed the xorg.conf file but still got a blank screen upon reboot.
I rebooted into single user mode, copied the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file to a safe location, and then restored the system back to its original state.
I've since rsync'd my system back to where it was before the update.

I am having trouble setting my refresh rate higher than 85 hz. Any Way to get it to 100 hz?
Tried so far:
- a lot of googling
- added a modeline to xorg.conf
- reinstalled nvidia driver
- tried the screen on a windows desktop, this worked so the monitor is fine

onitor: Iiyama Vision master pro 510 (should be capable of doing 104 hz at 1600 x 1200, max resolution 2048 x 1536)

I have a Nvidia 275GTX and I installed the nvidia drivers via RPM fusion and blacklisted Nouveau as instructed by a guide online that I see matches the one on these forums. When my system boots up now instead of having the cool blue screen with the fedora logo in the middle that loads up I get a black screen with a bar at the bottom that says Fedora 15 to the right and the bar fills up blue and white. It looks like 8 bit Nintendo. Did I do something wrong? Is there a way to get the nice Fedora 15 load screen back?

I have an IBM Thinkpad with an Nvidia card ( nVidia Corporation GT218 [NVS 3100M] (rev a2) )
I currently have the nouveau driver black listed in my grub.conf setup: rhgb quiet nouveau.modeset=0 rdblacklist=nouveau
I did the update which installed/updated the following:
---> Package kernel.i686 0:2.6.35.14-95.fc14 set to be installed
---> Package kernel-devel.i686 0:2.6.35.14-95.fc14 set to be installed
---> Package kernel-headers.i686 0:2.6.35.14-95.fc14 set to be updated
---> Package kmod-nvidia.i686 1:280.13-2.fc14 set to be updated
However when I reboot the system boots to a blank screen, and even the previous kernel boots to a blank screen. I tried installing akmod-nvidia but get the same results
I've restored the system back to before the update for now..
I am Currently attempting to set up a Dual Screen setup at my work but seem to be having some strange results. For some reason the O/S is only recognising one of the monitors, it knows exactly what the Make and model of the monitor is but doesnt appear to know that there is another monitor plugged in. It constantly says that there is 2 screens plugged in but lists the second screen as "CRT-0" even if no DVI cable is plugged into the second screen. This has really troubled me and has really got me thinking. I have set-up other Dual-screen setups with exactly the same hardware previously and it has worked fine? I am using a Lenovo A58 Tower with an Nvidia Quadro FX-380 Graphics card that I know is capable of dual Dual-link DVI output! With 2 x LG W3000-H Monitors running Fedora 12.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had a fully working Nvidia driver setup in FC 12 with no problems using an old LG monitor (LCD panel) on a VGA connection. I have just replaced the monitor with a newer Dell model that has a DVI connection. I plugged it in and got nice Post Screen, FC 12 boot progress display but when it got to displaying the login screen it went black.
Ctrl +Alt+F2 took me to a command prompt where I can type commands no problem. If I change the driver to the Nouveau (and Chattr +a the xorg.conf file) I get a lovely gui. So far nothing I have tried has let me use the Nvidia driver. I have searched around Google and tried nvidia-xconfig, system-config-display, livna-config-display xrandr (which fails to work at all) but so far I have got no where.
