So I installed the Nvidia driver on a fresh install of F13 & rebooted in the image I've attached. So, my question, what should I be posting here to fix it? Xorg.conf? Honestly, the one thing I've never had an issue with in Linux is video drivers. I've always run Nvidia cards & they've always just worked. So I'm at a loss for the first time in a long time. I also tried googling, but I have no idea what to google.

NVidia FX5200: nvidia-glx-173xxx The problem is that, when I install it, upon rebooting, I get a black screen with one blinking underscore at the top left corner. I somehow managed to get into the console and .. there's something wrong with the video card driver ( no way I could catch it into a picture ).
This was the exact reason why my Fedora CD was laying on the corner for months - I remember having this issue earlier as well.
Is there a way to fix it or at least, recover from a broken video card driver ?
Running 2.6.33.3-85.fc13.i686 and just purchased a AGP 7600GT 512 video card. Searched around and found:I did the rpm, yum, sed, mv & dracut as directed. Then I rebooted. When it starts up (all the normal bios messages) and then I 1/2" bar across the bottom of the screen with Fedora 13 on the right end and .... nothing. Just sits there. I've used my Live-13 disk and tried to reverse the procedure but I'm starting to think it's the video drivers.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Nvidia 275GTX and I installed the nvidia drivers via RPM fusion and blacklisted Nouveau as instructed by a guide online that I see matches the one on these forums. When my system boots up now instead of having the cool blue screen with the fedora logo in the middle that loads up I get a black screen with a bar at the bottom that says Fedora 15 to the right and the bar fills up blue and white. It looks like 8 bit Nintendo. Did I do something wrong? Is there a way to get the nice Fedora 15 load screen back?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had a fully working Nvidia driver setup in FC 12 with no problems using an old LG monitor (LCD panel) on a VGA connection. I have just replaced the monitor with a newer Dell model that has a DVI connection. I plugged it in and got nice Post Screen, FC 12 boot progress display but when it got to displaying the login screen it went black.
Ctrl +Alt+F2 took me to a command prompt where I can type commands no problem. If I change the driver to the Nouveau (and Chattr +a the xorg.conf file) I get a lovely gui. So far nothing I have tried has let me use the Nvidia driver. I have searched around Google and tried nvidia-xconfig, system-config-display, livna-config-display xrandr (which fails to work at all) but so far I have got no where.
I recently followed instructions to enable the nvidia driver. run the following commands:

then rebooted, a tricoloured loading bar appeared and finished, then all i got was a blank screen with flashing cursor. I don't get a prompt to login and can't access my account. I am dual booting on this machine with ubuntu, is there anyway i can restore my fedora partition and enable my nvidia graphics
I have openSUSE 11.3 with an nvidia card connected with two monitors. In the past I used xinerama which was ok, but now I need to have two separate desktops, one on each screen. I set the nvidia driver with x screen, and now one screen works perfect and the other only shows a black screen. When I move the mouse over the black screen, the mouse pointer turns into an X, but moves correctly, which seems to me that the problem is that I need to set the second desktop to that screen. I looked on forums on how to do so, and no luck.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing the following issue. After enabling SLI and PhysX in windows vista, my dual boot fedora 10 does not see the NVIDIA driver.
Doing: cat /proc/drivers/nvidia/0 I get? in the VGA bios for both cards.
I disabled both SLI and PhysX in vista, but the problem persists. I powerdown and unplugged the rig for several hours without results.
Here are my specs:
CPU: Intel Q9300
Board: MSI P7N Diamond
CARD0: EVGA Gforce 8800 GTS
CARD1: EVGA Gforce 8800 GTS
RAM : 4 Gbytes OCZ gold PC6400 (4 x 1 Gbytes)
PSU : Thermaltake SLI ready 850 W
It is important to mention that initially Fedora did see the cards and I was able to set up a dual monitor system. It right was after I enable SLI and PhysX and re-booting into Linux that the problem showed up.
I have seen this issue before in another machine with an ASUS board, but not until today I associated with the SLI setup. My guess is that there has to be something that the driver is enabling in the cards that messes up the interface between the nvidia.ko module and the kernel, but I don't know what may fix it. I need this system for some numerical calculations.
Sony vaio VPCF11NFX/B and Lucid 10.04.
Without use of the nvidia driver, my screen resolution is "too big" for the monitor.
When using the nvidia driver, the machine boots into low graphics mode and the screen is off center. Specifically, the top right corner is about 1/4 down and left of where it should be.
xvidtune doesn't work for my machine.
After installing Ubuntu and seeing my resolution would only go to 800 x 600, I found this strange. A message popped up about the nVidia drivers I could downlaod that would enable me to do more so I did. I restarted and all was fine. Nice effects, high resolution. However, after going on XP, then going onto Ubuntu, the screen ahs gone black. The white Ubuntu logo can be seen for a while as it loads, but then the monitor goes completely blank as I hear the sound when the log-in screen appears.As I said in my title, it was the 185 driver
View 3 Replies View RelatedPlenty of people seem to be having issues with the nvidia graphics drivers, so I thought I'd add my woes to the heap. My issue is that I run two screens under twinview, but the second one doesn't work for some reason. More specifically, the Nvidia-settings tool is able to detect my second monitor, and I'm able to assign it a resolution and position and the like, and my desktop seems to extend over to where the second monitor is, but the monitor just remains in standby mode.
This happened with the drivers proprietary drivers that Nvidia tried to install (version 173 I believe) so I removed them and tried to install the 195 drivers manually, which I eventually figured out how to do (by blacklisting the nouveau module amongst other things). This still didn't fix things, and gave me the same issue.
(As an aside, where can I find the nvidia-glx-195 and nvidia-modaliases-195 packages, as they seem to have disappeared from the LP-PPA-nvidia-vdpau repository where they apparently used to be?)
The strange part though, is that my second screen works fine if I don't install any nvidia drivers, and just use the System->Preferences->Monitors applet. The second screen comes out of standby and works nicely.
One other little thing I've noticed that may have something to do with it, is that if I switch the outputs that the monitors are connected to, the other monitor will work. The output whose monitor doesn't work is always the one that has the DVI->VGA converter. Could this have something to do with it?
I've been using ubuntu fine for a while when I decide to activate my nvidia graphics card.After rebooting, however, I hit nothing but a black screen. I've searched the nets and others have seemed to solve the problem after hitting alt+ctrl+f1/f2 and editing some files after that, but that doesn't work for me. Booting into recover console gives me nothing but a long stream of white words before it runs to --> done. and then it goes back to a black screen. Running from Live CD I can't access my ubuntu files.

When originally installing my resolution was a perfect 1440x900.
I then installed the Nvidia drivers with:
YUM install kmod-nvidia
This worked fine, I tried out Super Tux 2 to test it and I do indeed have 3D acceleration now. The only problem is my resolution has gone way down. The Nvidia software states its still 1440x900 but it definitely is not... And my monitor is down as (Not in front of it right now so can�t remember exactly) Generic or not detected... Is that what's causing the issue?
So to summarize, I have 3D hardware acceleration, the appropriate Nvidia drivers, it's just my resolution and the fact the Nvidia software is lying about it...

Previously running Squeeze I was using the proprietary driver and never had any issues. Now using the nouveau driver video playback of mp4 files is glitchy and programs like google earth don't operate smoothly. I installed the nvidia driver from the repositories based on this guide, used nvidia-xconfig to generate an xorg.config file. I made sure noeveau was blacklisted and rebooted my machine.
I was greeted with a black screen. So I booted up in recovery mode, used telinit 2 (side note: what happened to /etc/inittab???) to change to a runlevel that doesn't start X, and confirmed that nouveau was, in fact, not loaded. Typed startx and without any errors or warnings the screen went black. ctrl+alt+fN wouldn't bring me back to a terminal, but hitting the power button did shut down X and halt the machine.
I'm not really sure how to go about debugging this as I get no useful output from anything, just a blank screen and that's it.
For the time being I just blacklisted the nvidia driver and let the system boot with nouveau; I'd still like to get the nvidia driver working properly, though. I've always just downloaded the driver right from nvidia and installed it, but I know that isn't the best way to do it. I'd rather not screw up a brand new system, it's so nice and fast with the new SSD.
Since I upgraded to 9.04 a while back I have had this annoying screen resolution issue. Every time I log into my Ubuntu system the screen resolution defaults to 1280x1024. My preferred desktop resolution is normally set at 1680x1050. So each time I log in I have to open the Nvidia control panel and manually set the screen resolution to 1680x1050. Even after logging out it will still go right back to 1280x1024 when I log back in.
But the funny this is I am almost positive the login screen resolution is 1680x1050 because the picture is crisp unlike the blurry and distorted picture at 1028x1024. I have tried everything from manually editing the x.org conf file to running the Nvidia control panel as root. Nothing saves my preferred resolution of 1680x1050. My Nvidia driver is version 190.42 and Ubuntu version is 9.04. The monitor is an ASUS VW192T+ which is detected by the Nvidia driver.
I install on my PC Ubuntu 10.4 and i make al the updates even on my video card I update my video card to the last driver from the NVIDIA official site 195.36.15 My video card is Geforce 8600 GL The big problem is that after the update I have only 2 modes for changing the resolution 320x240 and 680x480 an I relay need biger resolution (1024x786) My xorg.config is :

I've just installed 10.04 on my Dell Latitude D830 with a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M; upon booting Ubuntu asked me to install the official NVIDIA driver (latest) so I went ahead and installed it, now the boot splash screen is in about 640x480/800x600 rather than the usual 1920x1200 it was when I first booted.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed Maverick on my HP tx1000. Jockey offered me two drivers for my NVidia Go 6150. I tried the recommended one--and it seemed to be working. It had a green light next to it in Jockey, Compiz worked, etc. Then I rebooted.
Except it didn't reboot--the disk thrashed for a while, and then I was met with a black screen. I tried recovery mode and got a bash prompt...which crashed when I ran `startx'. Then I tried Failsafe X, which did work. After some experimentation, I realized it was the Nvidia driver at fault, so I tried the not-recommended one, which didn't work, and now I've disabled both of them. But isn't there a proper driver for me to use? IIRC, I was using a restricted one with Lucid, and it was working all right.
Fun fact: The day before I installed Maverick, Windows 7 randomly decided to not boot all the way. It would show the splash screen, and then hang with a black screen too. But it works in Safe Mode. And had been working fine for a while beforehand. There must be demons in my graphics card.
i did yum -y install akmod-nvidia and then type xconfig-nvidia on the terminal,and after logging off i confront with a blank screen,so i remove akomd-nvidia [yum remove akomd-nvidia] and also yum erase xorg-x11-drv-nouveau [yum erase xorg-x11-drv-nouveau]but still no gui,i think i should install:
yum install kmod-nvidia
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64 [but i didn't]
so how can i have my gui back?
I realize that many have had the issue of getting a black screen when booting up. I'm posting because I've tried a couple fixes that I read after doing a search and haven't had any luck yet. I have the 64-bit 10.04 installed on my netbook and my issue surfaced after installing the current nVidia accelerated graphics driver. Following the install ubuntu now boots to a black screen and nothing more. I had to type: /etc/init.d/gdm3 stop The nvidia driver wouldn't install because the 'make' command was missing in a path or something. Now I cannot get the GUI anymore. startx gives me a blank screen rebooting the computer gives me a blank screen. I can only boot in recovery mode. but the nic doesnt work so no internet connection.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on an Intel DQ35JO motherboard and XFX 9500GT 512MB video card. After installation the desktop looked fine on the Sony LCD TV I have connected to the 9500GT via a DVI to HDMI cable.
After the first reboot after installation I added the Nvidia repository via the add community repository function in the software sources option in YaST2. I then proceeded to install the Nvidia G02 drivers and the nvidia-settings package. At this point after a reboot I would get a blank screen. Hitting ctrl-alt-F1/F2/F3/F4/F5/F6 has no effect, I could not get any of the virtual consoles to appear. I had to SSH into the box and reboot into runlevel 3.
Once I had rebooted into runlevel 3 I logged in as root and executed "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia" and got an error message that the configuration server could not be started. I tried executing "sax2 -r -m 0=vesa" and received the same error:

I've had Ubuntu installed on my desktop for a month now, and its all worked like a charm, so I'm thrilled. I then decided to install it on my old laptop as well to see if I could breath a bit more life into it, and to get used to working Ubuntu a bit more. The laptop had 18.6GB partitioned to C:// drive or windows XP, and an empty 18.6GB D:// drive, so I deleted the D:// drive in XP using the Microsoft disk utilities tool, all well and good. I then did a clean install of Ubuntu-9.10-desktop with an Ubuntu CD into the largest continuous free space, and it set it up nicely. When I first booted it up there were a ton of updates to install, as there had been on the desktop first time, which I dutifully installed. As on the desktop a little notice popped up telling me to install the NVidia Proprietary driver for the NVidia card (specifically "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 96)[Recommended]"), as it had when I installed it on the desktop, so I chose to install that and then restarted the computer.
On restarting GRUB2 loaded, and it booted Ubuntu. I then saw the little white logo on the black screen for a couple of seconds, and then the screen goes completely white, with some pixels left behind fading to white slightly slower. First time through I held down the power button to force shut down, and on restart exactly the same thing happened. This time I held down alt+sysrq and went through the R, E, I, S, U, B sequence, however as opposed to usual I didn't get a black terminal-like screen after hitting any of the buttons, although it did reboot on B. It did boot correctly in recovery mode, however I was at a loss what to do here. Incidentally, the same problem occurred when I booted to previous version of the kernel as well.
Then I decided that as I didn't have any data to lose, and it was still early in the day, I'd do a clean re-install. This time I chose to ignore the updates, and just install the NVidia driver as prompted to check that it was the driver causing the trouble. Having installed the driver and restarted I got exactly the same problem as before - definitely this pesky NVidia driver, not any of the updates.So here I am at clean install 3, having just got all the updates, but not having downloaded the NVidia driver as prompted, with little desire to go through yet more reinstalls. My questions are:
1) Do I need to install this NVidia driver? The rest of the computer specifications are fairly paltry by modern standards, and I won't be doing anything graphics intensive on it (the most graphical program will probably be Battle for Wesnoth) and I I don't need to install it, not installing it seems to be the easiest way to solve the problem.
2) If I do need to install it how would I go around doing this without getting my charming white screen?
3) Is there a way of removing the driver from recovery mode that doesn't involve a clean install again? I have tried sudo apt-get purge nvidia-driver, which tells me there isn't any installed. I have tried sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf which made no difference. I have tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and this didn't help. I have tried a couple of other commands as well but I can't remember them, however I would probably recognise them if I saw them again.

i just upgraded to the latest nvidia 8 series driver, i downloaded from the nvidia site. After i installed the driver, i reboot and it booted into the console login screen with no GUI. how do i get back into the GUI.

When i startx the computer freezes with an underscore in the top left hand of screen and i can't switch between tty's.
I know the pc and card work fine with other linux and win os's.
when i start uubuntu it automatically goes to tty with out letting me login. then when i press startx it says:

Switching between two instances of VNC viewer in full-screen mode takes three key presses and two mouse clicks. How can the viewer be configured to pass a special key combination to the host operating system instead of the remote OS, so it's possible to switch between full-screen viewers in one key press?
e.g. With the default configuration, if I put the viewers in adjascent workspaces, then the sequence to switch is: F8 MouseClick Ctrl+Alt+Left F8 MouseClick If the key combination Ctrl+Alt+Left was passed to the host then it would be possible to switch workspaces (and therefore viewers) in one key press. When working on multiple remote machines, both physical and virtual, it's often necessary to switch between them frequently. I must switch over 100 times some days. Simplifying the key sequence would be both quicker and more intuitive.
a Toshiba L650 laptop, and installed F13 x86-64 on a disk partition using install DVD. The wired ethernet on this is Atheros AR8152, and the Wireless is Broadcomm 4313. Both these devices are not supported by default. So, as per instructions on the Linux Wireless site, and some guidance on this forum, have downloaded the Broadcomm driver tar on another machine, copied it onto the Toshiba laptop using a USB device, and then extracted, and ran the b43-fwcutter. The subdirectory /lib/firmware/b43 is created and has approx 3 dozen files. However, the Broadcomm driver is not showing up as an option in the Network Manager (system-config-network) or in the lsmod command output. I tried to manually add it by doing modprobe b43 command - it then begins to appear in the lsmod, but the option to add the Broadcomm wireless driver during a "New wireless Hardware" is not appearing still. I think, at an abstract level, I need to somehow "tell" the system to add the Broadcomm driver - am just not sure how to do so. On the other hand, the Atheros AR8152 has no driver as of now, so the wired Ethernet is also not connecting. how I can download all the required files on a different machine, and then install it on the Toshiba laptop?
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.
If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.
I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.

i installed the new beta 10.04 and it seemed right after the install and update that both nvidia hardware drivers were automatically install together. i deactivated both drivers. one driver showed the nvidia 173 driver and the other one showed "current" nvidia driver.
after a restart i then tried to activate the 173 driver. system required a restart. so i did. system booted to a black screen. i believe its at the desktop but i am unable to see it. i tried to hit esc at the boot screen to enter the grub menu but that didnt work.
