Yesterday the updater installed a new kernel, Fedora (2.6.35.11-83.fc14.i686). This kernel will not boot into a GUI. This is almost certainly an nvidia problem. This kernel, Fedora (2.6.35.10-74.fc14.i686) works fine using the rpm-fusion supplied nvidia drivers. How do I get the new kernel to boot?

I use a pretty fresh installed RHEL 5.4, which should be very similar to Fedora. After the basic installation I installed xen and xen-kernel via yum with no errors. I can select the xen-kernel at boot time. But after booting the normal kernel shows up.
[root@noname boot]# uname -r
2.6.18-164.11.1.el5
My /boot/grub/menu.lst looks like:

timeout=5

I can't see anything wrong and I did not change/try anything.
I've just downloaded F11 i386 installation DVD. I installed it on my laptop and just now noticed that PAE kernel got installed. Isn't PAE for systems with RAM >3.2 GB? It's a pretty old laptop (P3, 256MB ram). So, is PAE kernel ok for me or should I reinstall from scratch and use some specific switches in the installer to get non-PAE kernel? I've also read that Yum doesn't recognize PAE packages dependencies and will install non-PAE kernel modules if I try to install let's say Nvidia driver or so.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI am installing to an empty hard drive (that for some reason is shown as /dev/sde - I don't know if it is related, but seems weird - why is it not sda, and moreover, not hda - it is an ide drive), and install goes through fine, but in the end it says "no kernel packages were installed, your grub configuration will not be changed", and the only option is to reboot. After rebooting, I get thrown into grub command prompt, and have no idea what to do there.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm taking a class this semester on Linux and a Fedora 13 DVD came with the book. Just now I've installed Fedora at home and started the updates. I saw a PAE entry in the updates so I went to the Terminal and typed uname -r and I see that the Fedora 13 DVD installed a PAE kernel on my machine that has only 1 GB of RAM.
Why did it do that?
Can I swap out the PAE kernel for a non-PAE kernel? (edit- I'm a Linux noob so I don't know)
Does it really matter?
After the updates I was going to try to install the proprietary Nvidia driver.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Fedora12 on a usb hard-drive, the first problem I encountered was that the hard-drive would not boot stating "kernel panic: unable to create root device", this is just using the standard fedora 12 install and mostly clicking next (although I add my vista to the grub and tell grub to install to /dev/sdc which is the location of my usb hdd).
I have also tried livecdtousb (wont boot in stick and wont recognize removable hd as removable)
I have tried setting up disc encryption and installing with no LVM.
The drive has this same problem with ubuntu 9.10 however ubuntu 8.10 installs perfectly and I am guessing earlier versions of fedora will too. The problem is that I would like the kernel features of Fedora 12 (mainly modesetting) without this issue.
I have played about with grub and quite like disabling LVM and using the uuid of the drive to select the root partition, my boot partition has 500mb, I have a 2gb swap space 50gb ext4 root partition & 27gb fat32 partition code...
I tried to install the new Vbox 3.2.6 through rpm as a guide told me but I first had errors with the older vbox dependencies, so I uninstalled vbox 3.1.8.2 and now I am with a vbox period. Is there something I can do to fix this I tried this tutorial didn't work for me [URL] and another on the fedora forum (lost the history). error I get is Recompiling VirtualBox kernel module [FAILED] and Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Server1 was the volume group on the drive that was removed. I thought I had removed that volume group in the disk manager. Server100 is the new volume group. In the shell, I can mount the root partition and look at its contents. It all seems to be there, but the /boot directory is empty. How I can get this system to boot up normally?

I guess that's the part that's really missing? How I would go about recovering it? The boot partition is in tact, and so is the root partition. So I'm still wondering why dracut thinks there is no root device.
No problems during installation (except DVD didn't automatically eject at end).
On booting, I got a bar across the foot of the screen (shades of blue, which then changed to white with Fedora 11 on RHS); then waited ... no change, no keyboard or mouse response.
Repeated the whole installation again - same result.
Then installed Fedora 9 and it booted OK; using Admin/Display showed a default CRT and XGI Volari Z7 video card.
I booted F12 live cd with virtualbox and installed it on a USB stick(4GB). The installation was a success but, when I try to boot it, it doesn't work. Do I have to install the grup manually?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have two hard drives, one (hard drive C) is 250GB and is the first hard disk. The second (hard drive Z) is 1000 GB and is the second hard disk in order. There used to be windows XP on C and Windows 7 on Z.
Because I installed 7 to Z from XP which is on C, it put the Windows Boot Loader on hard disk C. I didn't know this until now.
When I installed Fedora, I gave it all of C to install on. That messed up something because the Windows Boot Loader was on that drive, so grub didn't list it in the OS's to load. I had to add it manually, and got it working correctly so it had an entry for the partition that Windows 7 was on. This didn't work however, because Windows 7 on drive Z didn't have it's NTLDR on that drive, so now I have a 7 installation without an NTLDR on Z and a Fedora install on C. I am sure grub is working properly because when I change the load order of the hard drives to load Z first, it gives the same error:
NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart
or something along those lines.
Is there a way to get Z to have an NTLDR again and be able too boot Windows 7? I really hope I didn't mess up my entire 7 installation because of this.
I'm a fairly "new" linux user and have the next problem, I would gladly apreciate if anyone could please provide some kind of help, oh and thanks for taking your time to read this.
My computer currently has 2 hard Drives, In one I had windows xp installed and in the other one i had ( and have ) fedora 14.
None of them have been through any repartitioning ( except of course fedora 14 which automatically repartitions you hard drive, i think)
So today i downloaded Fedora 15 live iso and burnt it in a dvd, after booting up from the dvd i installed it to the hard drive where i had windows xp, i remember selecting the boot loader in that hard drive too, and then proceeded to install fedora 15.
After finishing the install, the system asked me to reboot, so i rebooted and quickly took out the cd. Next thing i know, my computer wouldnt get past the the screen where it tells you to press F2 for bios ( after this screen it would normally boot).
So I spent some time figuring it out, and realized that if i disconnected the hard drive with fedora 15 installed, i could boot with the other hard drive ( the one with Fedora 14) and acces my bios settings normally.
I tried booting up with only the Feodra 15 hard drive but it wont let me get past that screen or accessing my BIOS.
I am running Fedora 13 with a motherboard that doesn't have onboard graphics, so I had to put a PCIE card in to do the install.
However, I am using the box as a file server so I don't need graphics, and would like to be able to use the PCIE card for another computer.
So I took the card out and powered on, waited about 3 minutes and then typed in the login details. I then tried to SSH into it from another computer and couldn't connect, so it must not have booted up properly (I tried a few times to make sure).
I have read about a similar problem that occurs on Fedora 9 when there is no monitor attached - this is apparently solved by adding "nomodeset" to the grub entry, but that didn't work.
There is no X or Gnome/KDE installed and the default runlevel is 3.
PS - also, usually when the power button is pressed there is a pause before it powers off, but without a graphics card the power button turns it off immediately no matter how long you have waited.

I've not been able to find a solution on the forums, so thought I'd post. My DELL PC came with Vista installed and I then added Ubuntu. This seemed to work fine although I didn't really use Ubuntu too much. Then last week I decide to replace Ubuntu with Fedora 12. I selected the replace existing Linux option during the install process.
After installation, Grub displayed 2 options: Fedora and Other. Fedora was fine, other didn't boot. After readinf around I added another option for vista, but this results in the following error:

After a kernel update, the system always updates the GRUB menu, and the newer kernel is the default boot option.However, after an update on my F13 X64 system, the GRUB menu was updated, the config file still sets the default to "1" but if i left the automatic boot it will boot the previous kernel... am I crazy or missing something here?Here is my /boot/grub/grub.conf file:

I installed a fresh copy of Fedora 13 in Windows Virtual PC (I am aware Virtualbox would probably be more suitable), and everything started fine. After updating to the new 2.6.34 kernel it will no longer start, however, 2.6.33 still works.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've installed kmod-nvidia on my F12 system and now it doesn't boot anymore. I just receive a black screen with a blinking '_' on top of my screen immediately after i choose F12 in my grub menu. (I have a Nvidia 8800GT.)
I've tried to run the following command after the installation but it didn't work: [url]
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img
So I didn't blacklist nouveau or anything else. I just foolishly thought it was going to work.
Now I can't boot my system anymore. Is there any way to solve the problem? Or can I remove kmod-nvidia using a live cd? How?
I had Kubuntu 8.10 with KDE 4.0 interface and i decided to try out fedora to see if i liked it and wanted to eventually switch. i've done so many dual boot systems with Kubuntu and not had any problems that i decided not to back up my system this time before running the installation. after running the installation and shrinking my hard drive (200 gb) by 80 gigs, i rebooted to find that Kubuntu was no longer bootable. the first time i booted into fedora, disk utility popped up with a message that said "1 or more hard drives is failing". i ran the test that it recommended and found no problems. then i ran the longer test and still found no problems. i've rebooted a few times and have not been able to see Kubuntu in the boot loader options. if you need any more information i will be happy to provide it. my question, obviously, is how can i retrieve my Kubuntu partition. it is still there but is not bootable.

I installed kernel 2.6.32.9-67 via a yum update this morning. When I rebooted, the machine appeared to freeze with a single blinking underscore cursor. I used a live CD to edit grub.conf and reboot into the old kernel, which started normally. Later, I tried booting into the new kernel via grub again. After about two minutes, the blinking cursor is replaced by the normal boot screens and the machine works fine. This is on a seven year old PC with AMD Althon XP 2000+, 768MB RAM, VIA KT400 chipset and the NVIDIA 173xx driver from RPM Fusion.
View 6 Replies View RelatedHere's the deal: I've done a fresh F12 install on my T61. Told the installer to Encrypt the Hard Disk. The installation went fine. The kernel was 2.6.31.5. I ran a yum update, which added another kernel - 2.6.32.11, but I can't boot from that one. The newer kernel throws a an "Uncompression error -system halted" immediately.
