Fedora Installation :: Network Install Using USB As Boot Media

Jun 10, 2009

Can I do a network install using a USB as the boot media. I couldn't find the steps in the long installation help. It explains how to make a livecd boot USB drive but nothing for USB. Please make it clear with exact steps. [URL] says that I have to copy diskboot.img from /Images in install cd but there is no such file. There is a install.img should that be used instead.

Fedora Installation :: F11 Installed But Boot Won't Get To Login / What To Do?

Sep 22, 2009

No problems during installation (except DVD didn't automatically eject at end).

On booting, I got a bar across the foot of the screen (shades of blue, which then changed to white with Fedora 11 on RHS); then waited ... no change, no keyboard or mouse response.
Repeated the whole installation again - same result.

Then installed Fedora 9 and it booted OK; using Admin/Display showed a default CRT and XGI Volari Z7 video card.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Using Network Boot From Local FTP

Jun 14, 2010

I want to perform a netboot install of Ubuntu using files sourced from a local network FTP server, and I cannot find the necessary installer files anywhere.

Reasons include:
* dead or flaky optical drive and no chance of replacing it
* optical drive is CD but iso is DVD
* several targets, so much faster to load repeatedly from local FTP than from an internet repo

What I can do with Fedora or CentOS is as follows:
1. On a second PC, download the relevant .iso and extract that to a directory (or mount it with -t iso9660 -o loop to make the contents visible without bothering to run the extract or using up more space). This makes all the files available but most particularly a ram fs and a mini linux installer, such as initrd.gz and vmlinuz

2. On that second PC, also set up the usual DHCP/PXELINUX/TFTP arrangements to cause the netbootable target PC to load those two files and run the installer. Also run FTP (or HTTP) on that PC

3. Netboot initrd.gz and vmlinuz (names vary) into the target PC. Answer the installer's questions, including choosing FTP (or HTTP) install method, giving the second PC's IP address, and an account and password, and path to the extracted iso. The rest is as usual.

I have not been able to do this with any Ubuntu netboot installer I have found so far. It either netboots, but then (seems pointless) wants a CD iso, or insists on pulling from a repo. Yes, I could create a local repo, but that seems to need a lot more work and space than setting up an iso on an ftp server. Is it simply the case that the Ubuntu family lacks this sort of netbootable installer or I have just been unlucky in searching for it.

Fedora Installation :: Too Many Installed Packages In Text Mode Install?

Jan 23, 2009

On some computers I can not use graphical installation interface of Fedora 9. So I use text mode.I would like to have a very small installation with very few installed packages, so at package selection I uncheck everything. In text mode installation there is no option to customize installed packages down to package names. I can only check main themes. So I uncheck everything and installation starts. This method results over 400 packages to bo installed... This is too much with many unnecessary packages. If I use graphical interface and uncheck every package name at custom package selection then about 150 packages will be installed. Is there any good way to use textmode installation and don't install more than 400 packages?

Fedora Installation :: Recompile In 9 If The Packages Installed Through Yum Install Command?

Mar 6, 2009

Currently i am using mapserver 5.0.3 , AGG 2.5-6 on fedora 9. I need some help with mapserver and AGG support. I am trying to use AGG/PNG outformat in the mapfile as well as i added precisely. When i call the link through browser i recieved the following error:

loadOutputFormat(): General error message. OUTPUTFORMAT clause references driver AGG/PNG, but this driver isn't configured. It is clearly evident that from the error, the driver is not configured. since all the mapserver version 5 suppotrs AGG rendering backend, so i checked whether mapserver supports AGG or not.

[kapil@localhost cgi-bin]$ mapserv -v
MapServer version 5.0.3 OUTPUT=GIF OUTPUT=PNG OUTPUT=JPEG OUTPUT=WBMP OUTPUT=SVG SUPPORTS=PROJ SUPPORTS=FREETYPE SUPPORTS=WMS_SERVER SUPPORTS=WMS_CLIENT SUPPORTS=WFS_SERVER SUPPORTS=WFS_CLIENT SUPPORTS=WCS_SERVER SUPPORTS=SOS_SERVER SUPPORTS=THREADS SUPPORTS=GEOS INPUT=TIFF INPUT=POSTGIS INPUT=OGR INPUT=GDAL INPUT=MYGIS INPUT=SHAPEFILE
[kapil@localhost cgi-bin]$

I found that my mapserver doesn't support AGG means SUPPORTS = AGG is missing in the above output. But i have already installed AGG in my system. In order to clear this issue i gone through many threads in forums, but i was not satisfied with the answers. Atlast i came to know that, i have to recompile the mapserver with AGG. The following link gives you some idea about compiling mapserver with AGG in linux [URL] But the problem now i am facing is i have installed both the mapserver and AGG through YUM INSTALL command so i dont know how to recompile mapserver with AGG support. I think, there will be no configuration file normally when installing through Yum insatll command.

Fedora :: Boot Network Error After Graphic Driver Install

Mar 31, 2011

I tried to install the nvidia driver using yum. I had the nouveau graphic driver installed. I didn't follow any tutorial I just installed the nvidia driver over the installed one. Thinking that yum would take care of everything for me. When I rebooted I get as far as "registering binary handler for windows applications" I can still log on using alt+f2 and mount the file system using chroot but I cannot get any network access. When I use netstat -nr nothing is configured. I can't ping my router or any other computer on the network.I figure I should disable the nouveau driver and try to use the nvidia tutorial by leigh123linux to get the desktoop up again but I need net access to do that.I have no idea how to get that done. I have tried, ifdown/ifup, /etc/init.d/networks restart, service network stop/start/restart, ifconfig eth0.

Debian Installation :: Installed Dual Boot 6 RC2 / No Boot At All

Apr 17, 2011

Before the installation, I had triple boot of WinXP, Win 7, Ubuntu 10.10. As you can guess, the main boot-loader was grub. The second is Win 7 boot loader, and there it gives the option what to choose, load XP or Win 7.I made a decision to remove Ubuntu and install Debian(you know better than me why I did). So first, I searched a guide how to un-dual-boot. It told me to delete the two partition that Ubuntu use(swap and ext4) and write to MBR the win 7 boot-loader(using EasyBCD), so I delete them and use EeasyBCD. At this stage, I had 2 partitions: NTFS for XP and NTFS for Win 7, and the Win 7 boot-loader(and XP) worked pretty well.I install the latest testing of Debian(6 RC2) from DVD1 using this guide, except I choose to use the graphical installer, ext4(not ext3 as there), install the desktop environment, and choose to install grub(even know it didn't asked me). The swap partition I set is 3 GB because my RAM is 2 GB, even know that ubuntu set it in the past to 2 GB.The installation went pretty well, just when come to grub package, it says that there was an error with installing grub package(it didn't told me what), I had no choice, so I choose to skip over grub/lilo and finish with no boot manager. I was thinking to myself: "So I couldn't install grub, at least I have the Win 7 boot-loader(which contain XP loader), and maybe Win 7 boot-loader will recognize Debian too.". But I end up with no boot at all.It told me than when choose not to install boot-manager that I need to load /vmlinuz and give it the parameter root=/dev/sda4(my deb partition).I think that if I could install grub, I could load all my boots("sudo grub update" right?).How can I fix it?
