I can vnc to it but it's command line only.If possible, I'd like to use the defacto std tool called remote desktop installed with the win os.If not any are there any open source-al free tools I could install on win to get this functionality?

Server :: Samba And Other Free Software Tools Can "control" A Number Of Windows Workstations
Jul 19, 2010I want to have a Linux server "control" a number of Windows workstations. The workstations are a mixture of XP Pro, 7 Pro, and 7 Home Premium (the latter won't join a domain so can't have all the features I want mind). I want:
Centralised username and password database. Easy to add users. Roaming user profiles, so users can switch computers and take their settings with them. If possible, settings for selected programs shared between XP and 7. (They need separate profiles.) My Documents on a network file server. I'm interested in having transparent versioning on this - perhaps by using a copy-on-write filesystem, perhaps just by using a version control app on the server and having cron make a commit every night.
Able to manage software installation and removal centrally. (This I already do, using WPKG). Able to manage configuration centrally. Basically pretty much anything the user could change, I want to be able to force a setting of. I'm thinking desktop wallpaper locking, forcing use of a web proxy, setting printers, restricting use of USB drives, etc. Printer accounting.
Give the clients resolvable names (probably DNS, maybe WINS). This is mainly to help if I need to remote into a client desktop. I don't know to what extent this can be done with Samba. I know it doesn't have all the features of Windows servers, but I know next to nothing about Windows servers. So, can what I want be done? How I'm prepared to read docs for and test things out, but I don't want to be looking for tutorials on something not possible!

However I do not have a wired internet connection, and have the infernal BCM4312 and I understand the STA works with this (It has worked for me with other distros). In another thread, I read that I can download the relevant files (using another computer) from FedoraFusion, transfer them to the wireless computer and install.

Feb 17, 2009I try to boot Fedora 10 without initrd. System boots normally if I make in some nodes in /dev such as /dev/console. Almost everything works fine, but when I try ping with record route option -R I get this error

If I boot with initrd ping -R works without this error. Iptables not running.
Also this error appear when I try to boot from LiveCD F11-Alpha-i686-Live-KDE.iso or other Fedora 10 LiveCDs.

May 18, 2011I've got a question on free disk space. I'm currently running CentOS 5.5 on in Xenserver virtual environment. We've had an issue with disk space. My question is as follows: - from a ssh connection i run df -h this gives the value of 90% used leaving me with 9GB. If I use system monitor via a VNC connection the free disk space value is 20GB free on the same volume. Which one is correct? I do use SNMP to monitor the same volume and should alert me when < 10% is free I know this works as I set the alert threshold to < 90% I get an alert.

My computer says the driver is installed and the device is present. All of that went fine. Now I need to connect my card to my house's wireless network. Am I supposed to do that in System-->Administration-->Network Tools? The problem is that whenever I click on network tools, the application looks like it is going to start-up and then quits/crashes/runs away, whatever. Any ideas on what is causing this?

Feb 22, 2011I need to record Tx/Rx bw in my c program at defined intervals. I am aware that there a bunch of available tools but I need a minimal version with only Tx/Rx bw with no other details. I have tried the tool bwm-ng which mostly serves my purpose but either it runs continuously in the console or saves result in html file. It does not have any options to save the result in txt file which could have been easy to parse.
Is there any other simple way to record Tx/Rx bw in a program?(without using tools from /proc/net/ or any) I am using Mandriva Linux 2.6.31.5.

I use OpenSuse 11.1 and KDE although Im happy to set up a user using Gnome.
Just recently my browsing speed dropped to almost nothing ...I used [url] to measure my speed and it gave a very slow result 30kb/sec ....usually its around 3000kb/sec. I rang my ISP's helpdesk and they told me my ADSL connection was fine. Two minutes later it was back to normal!
I know the internet speed varies from time to time ...I guess depending on how many are using it and for what. But..I suspect that my ISP was restricting my speed and Im looking for a tool that will tell me which part of the internet is the "slowest"
I would also welcome pointers to information about internet speed and what causes it to change.

Feb 17, 2010I need to monitorize which Wi-Fi APs are in coverage, so periodically I perform a scan whith "sudo iwlist ath0 scan". The problem appears when disconnecting an AP (from the electrical network). In this case, iwconfig shows the disconnected AP during 30-40 seconds after the disconnection.
I'm trying to figure out how to order the kernel to actually refresh the list of in coverage APs, and avoid to show nets that were in coverage but aren't now.

Feb 4, 2011In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5
previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal
After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data
By doing that
1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.
2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.
Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)
