Networking :: Tools To Measure Internet Speed ?
Aug 5, 2010
Is there some software to measure Internet speed and show where the slowest element is?
I use OpenSuse 11.1 and KDE although Im happy to set up a user using Gnome.
Just recently my browsing speed dropped to almost nothing ...I used [url] to measure my speed and it gave a very slow result 30kb/sec ....usually its around 3000kb/sec. I rang my ISP's helpdesk and they told me my ADSL connection was fine. Two minutes later it was back to normal!
I know the internet speed varies from time to time ...I guess depending on how many are using it and for what. But..I suspect that my ISP was restricting my speed and Im looking for a tool that will tell me which part of the internet is the "slowest"
I would also welcome pointers to information about internet speed and what causes it to change.

Any command line tool to measure the network speed between my two linux servers without taking disk speed into account? My network is supposed to be 100Mb, but it doesn't feel like that so I wonder where the bottleneck is. The numbers that I see doesn't correlate well to that. So I'd like to know the speed network card to network card.

I want to measure how much Internet I use on a day-to-day basis. I don't mean how much time I spend on the Internet. I mean volume of data; i.e. how many Mb of data I download and upload, including everything: surfing, on-line backups, emails, IM, VOIP, updates, streaming, and so forth. I don't need this broken down by type (though it would be nice); I just need totals per 24 hour periods. How can I get these statistics? Do I need to install a special program?

Any good way to measure USB drive speed in a repeatable and effective way? I know that what I "copy" and how I "copy" and the filesystem in use make a difference in anything I try to measure. I know that I can:choose some file or folder tree use various tools (cp, tar, rsync, etc) to move the data use time command to collect details do this more than once.
One "benchmark" I've used in the past was to create a source tree for some application and use make clean; time make in that tree. Lots of I/O of various sorts and some computation and very repeatable. Since I'm not seeking a gold standard benchmark, I can do what I like, but I'd like to do something (a)meaningful in general for myself and others, and (b)avoid inventing what probably already exists.

I am wondering if there is a tool that measures bandwidth speed right from the shell on CentOS 5.4/5.5.
I am looking for a speed tool rather than go ahead and download a large file and time it sort of advice.
Please let me know if this is available.
P.S. It is to measure the internet speed from the ISP and not the LAN speed.

According to the manual of "sar" in Unix systems (computerhope.com/unix/usar.htm), it allows to determine the number of accesses to system buffers (lread and lwrite). Thus, we can easily calculate the cache hit ratio of I/Os via the system buffer.
However, "sar" in Linux only measures I/Os to physical devices (as bread and bwrite), instead of those to the system buffer (linux.die.net/man/1/sar)
I need to measure cache hit ratios for I/Os on Linux system buffer, and was wondering if there's a way to use "sar" or any other similar tools to determine such ratios.

dualboot win7 and ubuntu 10.10 x64.All was fine. Suddenly I noticed that download speed on ubuntu is 100-500Kb/s, while it has to be 100Mbps. Same resources download 9Mb/s on dualboot win, so it is not hardware/isp problem. This problem occurs when connecting by eth cable. The connection is over ppp0 vpn tunnel.The ping is very slow - around 300ms even to my ISP.The only soft I was installing recently is tor/vidalia/privoxy,but I removed them all.I also noticed that avahi-daemon is running, can it be causing the delays?

I'm curious if there are any tools that can help speed up the time it takes for my computer to boot up. I've used different utilities to help my Vista boot up time, so I'm curious if the same sort of things are available for Ubuntu.

When using launchpad and the ubuntu daily build website it is very slow. I get 1.2mb/s normally and the speed drops quickly to 0kb/s This is the case from any version of ubuntu that is installed on my laptop.In windows it is no problem, equally there is no problem from a live cd or an install on my external hard disk. Is canonical blacklisting/slow listing my ip?
I am behind a university network but am sure this problem occurs at home .I did a clean install and had no problem until about an hour ago. When I tried to re download a project using bzr my speed instantly ropped.I had downloaded it fine a couple of hours ago. I hope that someone can shine some light on this, its very hard to work on projects if I can't download them.

Lately my computer, while connected to our router and using the internet, drags the connection speed of everyone in the house down tremendously, to the point of being unusable in many cases. Even buffering a ..... video causes tremendous lag across the network, making second-long load times stretch to a minute or more.
Now, our connection isn't the greatest, but ..... shouldn't cause that much lag, so I'm thinking there's something else at work. Is there some application I could use to monitor what programs on my computer are accessing the internet?

I have seen several threads lately about slow internet connections here and elsewhere, but I haven't seen anyone post a reply about blacklisting ipv6 so I am curious as to why?Is ipv6 enabled only on certain distro's or is there some other reason that it's not mentioned?
<If anyone wants to try it, to see if it would work for them>
On Slackware 12.2 and Salix 13.0 just add "blacklist ipv6" to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file. I'm not sure about non-slackware based distro's. Unfortunately, I don't know any way of doing it without rebooting.

Lately, my internet connection stops for several minutes and then re-connects. Since there are few issues to debug here (router, modem, ADSL, internet provider), I would like first to measure the failure rate. Is there a utility or script that will do the following: Wake every 1-2 minutes, verify a certain web page is available (doesn't matter which). If it fails: dump a line to a log file and get back to sleep. If OK - get back to sleep. Is there such a utility?

When I upload a file to an internal Ubuntu server the speed is ok ~15MB/s.
The problem is only with Internet Firefox / synaptic, any program using Internet. Last download done with synaptic display 18KB/s when normally it should be 500.

So i am very new to linux based OS. Just started getting used to the terminal. but my problem is i am trying to install a game on steam and it is downloading very slow. i am used to getting close to 700 kb/s on windows 7 but on ubuntu 11.04 i am only getting 170-180 max. now i have searched all over and tried to fix it on my own but i just cant figure it out and am getting very frustrated. so if anybody has an idea as to how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated. (have looked through the forum by the way but as i said im new to linux and im not actually sure if im looking at the right things) but im using a wired connection. it says im connected to something called auto etho. and there is something called a loopback connection or something like that.

I upgraded from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 last night in response to a pop up window. When I rebooted after the upgrade my wife immediately complained about the internet not working. Actually the connection up was working but Fedora 11 upgrade had made it slow almost to a stop There are two XP machines the network behind a local D-Link wireless router with Comcast high speed internet. When I disable networking on the Fedora machine the internet connection immediately returns to normal on the other two machines. Also there is a second or two period after enabling networking for a quick upload or download before the connection clogs.I checked the system monitor network history and found that there is a constant networking send rate of just under 180 kb/s in the background.This occurs even when the browser, email client, and automatic backup are off and the only process showing significant CPU use in the system monitor is the monitor itself.
I tried netstat but there were so many /tmp/orbit entries that I could not scroll up to the top of the listing. Is this normal. If so, does anyone know the netstat command options to just see connections with sent packets. I also tried ifconfig -a. This shows no Rx packets at all, and no TX packets except on eth0, The total etho TX packets matches t,he reported by the system monitor, and in the monitor you can watch the total accumulate in approx 180 kb/sec increments. I don't understand why 180kb/sec TX would make a dramatic difference in internet network internet speed. Comcast reports upload speeds in megabytes. I need to be able to use the net in Federa, but I am also curious to learn what is the caused the problem.

I have a Fedora 11 system and cbq.init-v0.7.3 in it. Now I want to restrict upload speed from my ftp server to Internet (eth1). According to docs I've made a simple file /etc/sysconfig/cbq/cbq- 00.inet_upload_restrict:
DEVICE=eth1,100Mbit,10Mbit
RATE=800Kbit
WEIGHT=80Kbit
PRIO=5
RULE=:20,
So as you can see I want to limit outbound traffic on eth1 from my ftp port 20 to any to the 800Kbit/s (100Kbyte/s). Now I do cbq start, it says: find: warning: you have specified the -maxdepth option after a non-option argument (, but options are not positional (-maxdepth affects tests specified before it as well as those specified after it). Please specify options before other arguments.
