Ubuntu Networking :: Network Tools Not Launching ?
Mar 25, 2010
I did this --> [url]
My computer says the driver is installed and the device is present. All of that went fine. Now I need to connect my card to my house's wireless network. Am I supposed to do that in System-->Administration-->Network Tools? The problem is that whenever I click on network tools, the application looks like it is going to start-up and then quits/crashes/runs away, whatever. Any ideas on what is causing this?
Okay, I tried launching from the terminal, here is what I got:

Been helping a user who recently upgraded to 11.04 as his networking stopped after the upgrade. One thing I noticed was that he could not get ping to work. Then checked my 11.04 machine and it also fails to ping using Network Tools. I know the network is OK as I am using my Ubuntu machine to write this. Ping from the command line is fine so it is only the Network Tools ping test that appears to be broken.
Asked another Ubuntu 11 user to check his machine and he also cannot get ping to work even though his machine appears to be fine. Again this is only using the GUI tool.I know it is not hardware as I can dual boot and in XP everything is fine and I can ping all my systems. Also I am sharing a folder from my Ubuntu and my Mac shares the folder just fine. The Mac can also ping everything except the Ubuntu box. Command line ping works so it is not a basic network problem. So as far as I can tell the Network Tools ping test is not working. Has anyone else seen this or can confirm that it is broke. How do I report this or get it fixed?

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 and I've been unable to access any type of Internet service besides web browsing. When I check on Network Tools, it's always set on Loopback Interface, regardless of whether I've just switched it to Ethernet Interface. I haven't been able to download system updates through Update Manager. I'm not very experienced with Ubuntu.

I have a third party program (tightvnc) which I want to monitor and detect if it loses a connection with a client. I don't care if the client has the program open but isn't doing anything with it, I only want to know if the actual TCP connection is lost.
Since TCP takes forever to die on it's own I was thinking the best way to detect if a connection is lost is by bandwidth the bandwidth on the tcp port allocated to the VNC connection. Are there any tools built in to redhat (RHEL 5.2) which I could use to do this? Since I don't have full control of the operating system I would prefer to use built in tools rather then trying to get a new tool installed.

I would like to test network performance, to get statistic information. Is there any tools where I could specify partikular message size send as a constant for many times and in an output I could get time for each transaction? There is a tool called ApacheBench, it is for webserver testing, but I would like to find something similar for network testing. I have also tried Netpipe, Netperf, Iperf, but they do not show information in an output, which I would like to see.

I'm not sure if this is the correct section to ask this question, so mods please move if needed. This happens with a freshly installed Lucid 64 bit, 2.6.32-22-generic kernel. Each time I boot into the system I get prompted for my password: "Unlock Login Keyring
Enter password to unlock your login keyring The login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged into your computer." At first I thought it was the wireless network problem, so I already checked my wireless as "Available to all users", but this didn't stop the prompt. Doing a little bit more of research, if I cancel the dialog without entering my password, I can access the web without any problems (so again it is not the wireless connection problem), but then if I try to launch Gwibber I get the prompt again (two times actually, if I press Cancel the first time), or if I launch Empathy as well (three times in a row if I press Cancel; probably it has to do with the fact that I'm logged into 3 different accounts, facebook, gmail and hotmail?).
Furthermore, this two nice pieces of sofware offer almost zero configuration options to the user, at least GUI-wise, so there is no checkbox for "Available to all users" or anything simmilar for the matter. For instance, in gwibber I have spell-check turned on by default and there is no way to turn it off. So I guess I'll have to tweak some configuration file in some obscure folder,

I am currently running a 64-bit Fedora 14 server which hosts a game server, a voice server, and remote desktop functionality, each on a distinct TCP port. I am currently using the built-in firewall to deny all traffic other than ICMP ping/pong and TCP traffic on those specific ports.I am looking for a graphical application which will let me monitor any connections being made to my server in order to keep an eye out for possible security concerns. To be more specific, I'd like to be able to see the source IP addresses, TCP/UDP ports, and individual bandwidth in use by external connections being made to the server, along with any other information that might be helpful in identifying a possible intrusion attempt.

Got following

This package contains tools to manage Debian based XEN virtual servers.
Using the scripts you can easily create fully configured Xen guest domains (domU) which can be listed, updated, or copied easily.
Homepage: [url] in the above output I am getting a line Conffiles and then you can see a series of /etc what are that and is it an error or some conflict?

I want to run OpenBox on a netbook. For those of you not familiar, it is a very simple window manager, where I can launch a terminal with a mouse click, and I can start the few apps that I need from the command line. Basically, I am trading eye candy and easy access to a lot of stuff I don't need for a more responsive GUI.
My question is...what package should I install, and what corresponding command line would be used to launch a tool to manage the wireless LAN connection?

I need to record Tx/Rx bw in my c program at defined intervals. I am aware that there a bunch of available tools but I need a minimal version with only Tx/Rx bw with no other details. I have tried the tool bwm-ng which mostly serves my purpose but either it runs continuously in the console or saves result in html file. It does not have any options to save the result in txt file which could have been easy to parse.
Is there any other simple way to record Tx/Rx bw in a program?(without using tools from /proc/net/ or any) I am using Mandriva Linux 2.6.31.5.

Is there some software to measure Internet speed and show where the slowest element is?
I use OpenSuse 11.1 and KDE although Im happy to set up a user using Gnome.
Just recently my browsing speed dropped to almost nothing ...I used [url] to measure my speed and it gave a very slow result 30kb/sec ....usually its around 3000kb/sec. I rang my ISP's helpdesk and they told me my ADSL connection was fine. Two minutes later it was back to normal!
I know the internet speed varies from time to time ...I guess depending on how many are using it and for what. But..I suspect that my ISP was restricting my speed and Im looking for a tool that will tell me which part of the internet is the "slowest"
I would also welcome pointers to information about internet speed and what causes it to change.

I need to monitorize which Wi-Fi APs are in coverage, so periodically I perform a scan whith "sudo iwlist ath0 scan". The problem appears when disconnecting an AP (from the electrical network). In this case, iwconfig shows the disconnected AP during 30-40 seconds after the disconnection.
I'm trying to figure out how to order the kernel to actually refresh the list of in coverage APs, and avoid to show nets that were in coverage but aren't now.

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.

I just installed Fedora (15) for the first time. However I do not have a wired internet connection, and have the infernal BCM4312 and I understand the STA works with this (It has worked for me with other distros). In another thread, I read that I can download the relevant files (using another computer) from FedoraFusion, transfer them to the wireless computer and install.

I'm hoping to find an existing Linux tool for measuring latency:
I'm trying to diagnose how much latency my OS and NIC card are adding to TCP latency in Linux. I looked at the following tools but all (at least at the surface level) measured bandwidth (Mbps/sec) rather than latency (nanoseconds for transmition of 1 packet of size x).
If I were to write a custom test, it would likely do the following:
Client:
Create a fake message of the specified length with some padding for an incrementing identifier. Open a TCP connection (with the right parameters like TCP_NODELAY, etc) Loop and send messages containing an incrementing identifier. Store the current system time (in nanos) associated with the identifier. Listen for responses, record the current time and record the latency of that identifier asynchronously Server Listen for a connection Echo back any message received
Assuming both boxes had the same setup (configs, cards, OS, CPU, etc), are relatively close to eachother in the network, and one knows roughly the network's latency contribution, one could get a rough estimate of the OS + NIC contribution and begin testing various configurations.
One could also get a more accurate picture of the latency by using a network sniffer and snooping on the lines between the two hosts, calculating the latency between the two sides for an ID, and then subtracting that from the internally measured latency.

I am trying to set up to serve Linux kernels and filesystems disklessly, and find the startup and test procedure a bit tedious. Can anyone point to a tool or tools to allow me to see what is going on with my DHCP/TFTP/PXE setup, which I'm trying to get working? Ideally, I'd like a tool that can do something like grab an IP from a DHCP/BOOTP server, tell me all about all that it found, and then if it was told to download a file, it could do that and tell me about how that went, and so on. Between the information reported by the tool and the droppings left in logfiles on the server side, I would hope to simplify the configuration process, as well as let me experiment with various options, etc. Even a PXE client tool that I can use to exercise my tftp PXE server configuration from a shell commandline would be extremely useful. If no such tool already exists, would anyone else find something like this useful?

All I want to do is transfer my pictures from my Motorola V3 RAZR to the Ubuntu 10.04 PC. Searching, I installed KMobileTools 0.4.3.3 from the "Ubuntu Software Center" as a Ubuntu 10.04 replacement for the Windows "Motorola Phone Tools". But when I attach my fully charged Motorola RAZR V3 to the Ubuntu 10.04 PC with a USB cable, I can't transfer my pictures from the phone to the PC using KMobileTools.
In fact, there doesn't even appear to be a MENU for transferring pictures from the Motorola RAZR V3 to the Ubuntu 10.04 PC in the KMobileTools application. What would you suggest for transferring pictures from the Motorola RAZR to the Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid PC?
