I need to test network card throughput and speed between two computers, one is running Fedora and other running Windows 7. Usually I would use netperf to perform this task, however I can't find Windows build of netperf. Can anyone recommend any network evaluation tool, similar to netperf (clien/server) which has both Windows and Linux versions.

The Linux box is connected to the router by ethernet cable. I have tried the Samba Setup Guide [URL] but it ends cryptically with "Now you need to setup your Windows PC for domain logins" and none of the IT folk I have asked at work know what that means.

Laptop: Dell Studio 1745 w/Intel 5100 a/b/g wireless
Router: Linksys WRT54G set as dhcp server
Both windows boxes are set for workgroup "home"Laptop is "laptop.home"They can all connect outside to the internet but don't seem able to see each other, not even to ping each other.
I noticed tonight when I go to Places, Network, it will bring up an icon for Windows Network, and I can drill down to my Windows box. But I can't see the other Linux box (a laptop running Kubuntu), and the same behavior occurs on the laptop when trying to view the Linux desktop. The laptop is connected wirelessly, if that makes a difference. Each box can ping the others, but I don't yet know how to browse one Linux box from the other Linux box.

Is it anyway possible that my mobile broadband speed is slow because of my installation is wrong? actually, I formatted my machine and make it dual-boot. After that my mobile-broadband speed is horrible slow. I installed (a)kmod-wl and as dependency, broadcom-wl but my lspci only shows intel network manager.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 last night in response to a pop up window. When I rebooted after the upgrade my wife immediately complained about the internet not working. Actually the connection up was working but Fedora 11 upgrade had made it slow almost to a stop There are two XP machines the network behind a local D-Link wireless router with Comcast high speed internet. When I disable networking on the Fedora machine the internet connection immediately returns to normal on the other two machines. Also there is a second or two period after enabling networking for a quick upload or download before the connection clogs.I checked the system monitor network history and found that there is a constant networking send rate of just under 180 kb/s in the background.This occurs even when the browser, email client, and automatic backup are off and the only process showing significant CPU use in the system monitor is the monitor itself.
I tried netstat but there were so many /tmp/orbit entries that I could not scroll up to the top of the listing. Is this normal. If so, does anyone know the netstat command options to just see connections with sent packets. I also tried ifconfig -a. This shows no Rx packets at all, and no TX packets except on eth0, The total etho TX packets matches t,he reported by the system monitor, and in the monitor you can watch the total accumulate in approx 180 kb/sec increments. I don't understand why 180kb/sec TX would make a dramatic difference in internet network internet speed. Comcast reports upload speeds in megabytes. I need to be able to use the net in Federa, but I am also curious to learn what is the caused the problem.

I am in the process of building a new desktop machine for work and fun. I am looking to run a undecided flavor of Linux (guessing Ubuntu) as my primary OS and several Windows installs with a Windows 7 install for .net development and gaming as virtualized environments.
From my previous experiences with virtualization software in Linux I was never able to find an application that offered descent video card support / graphic acceleration etc. to be capable of playing any games within one of the virtualized environments. And since I will be investing quite a bit of money into this system for gaming I would naturally want to find the best option available to achieve this setup.
So Onto my question: Is there any virtualization software available for Linux that has full video card support, graphic acceleration and capable of taking advantage of everything the video cards have to offer within the virtualized environments?
Or am I stuck with running Windows 7 as my primary OS and using virtualization for Linux and the other OS's?
Also I have no preference on open/closed source and price range would be up to $175.00 to support at least 3 virtualized environments.
I just got a graphics card ATI installed on my fedora 10. I would like to see the functioning of the same with some kind of game. Any suggestions for game under fedora 10 to see the graphics application.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a CentOS 5.5 machine (hosted at a remote hosting company) where "ethtool" reports that the eth0 device is currently in 10 Mbps mode, but the output indicates that it supports 100 Mbps. But if I try using ethtool to switch the device into 100 Mbps mode, it doesn't work; after running the command to switch it to 100 Mbps, ethtool reports the speed is still 10 Mbps:

The man page at [URL]..ethtool seems to suggest that this should have worked. Any reason why the reported speed of the device didn't change? Changing other settings doesn't appear to work either, e.g. if I specify "duplex half" instead of "speed 100", eth0 still reports "Duplex: Full".

ifconfig gives just the "lo" device. is there a hardware detection step I'm missing? I should mention this is a swap of one onboard NIC for another.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed f11 on my machine and am wondering how to control the fan speed for my graphics card, its a asus EAH4850 (single slot, fan starts automatically at around 10% speed).
The card goes at around 85 degrees Celsius with stardard speed with no 3d, and 110+ when running any 3d application, wich then causes it to not respond. i have to set it to around 60% speed for safe temperature.
I'm used to windows, there i could either use the asus smart doctor or the catalyst control center to adjust fan speed, i'm looking for a linux alternative.
I know that most people are using F12 and F13 but I just installed F10 on one of my machines. The Kernel is 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686 and the GUI is Gnome 2.24.1.I have a Trendnet wireless card already installed in the machine from when it ran XP which is in the tew-421pc/tew-423pi family. Is there a device manager/hardware installer that I can use to set up the wireless card or does anyone know of a driver install program for this card?

Unfortunately, when I put the PCMCIA card in, nothing happens. On Windows, a green light flashes even if the card is not connected to any network. At first I thought this might be a hardware issue, so I did #lspci and got:

Lo and behold, when I put a different unbranded Wireless PC Card in it works. I'm no expert in Networks, but to me this suggests a driver problem (i.e. the card is physically detected it just won't work). However, the correct driver was installed with ndisgtk and this was verified with #ndiswrapper -l, hence the confusion.
I'd be grateful if anyone else has had this problem/knows of this problem and is willing to share the solution with me/point me in the right direction. So far, Google has returned a few posts from a few years ago talking about patching kernels and manually building files etc (just before Prism54 became integrated into the Linux kernel).

I have tried adding another ftp command such as ls to the end of the "here" document (in case the results were clipped by the bye command) but to no avail. The ls result immediately follows the ### - no stats I am at a loss.
Been helping a user who recently upgraded to 11.04 as his networking stopped after the upgrade. One thing I noticed was that he could not get ping to work.Then checked my 11.04 machine and it also fails to ping using Network Tools. I know the network is OK as I am using my Ubuntu machine to write this. Ping from the command line is fine so it is only the Network Tools ping test that appears to be broken.
Asked another Ubuntu 11 user to check his machine and he also cannot get ping to work even though his machine appears to be fine. Again this is only using the GUI tool.I know it is not hardware as I can dual boot and in XP everything is fine and I can ping all my systems. Also I am sharing a folder from my Ubuntu and my Mac shares the folder just fine. The Mac can also ping everything except the Ubuntu box. Command line ping works so it is not a basic network problem.So as far as I can tell the Network Tools ping test is not working. Has anyone else seen this or can confirm that it is broke. How do I report this or get it fixed?
I have downloaded and installed Fedora 10.Now I am setting up the network and in the 'network configuration' it finds the wireless device (ralink) in the 'hardware' section of the configuration - I set this to eth0 (it originally set itself to wan0 and I still had the same problems, now it doesn't give me the option to put it back to wan0).Now I goto the devices tab and try to set up the device with eth0 - which it seems to find.But when I goto activate the device it tells me that eth0 cannot be found

The card does show up when I run lspci, although iwconfig yields nothing.Not sure if this helps, but when Ias running Karmic Koala, Ubuntu detected the card immediately and required no configuration
