Jun 15, 2010Most of my experience configuring network settings has been through various GUI tools available in GNOME and KDE. I have some older hardware that will not run KDE or GNOME and I am trying to configure the NIC. I have installed Webmin to try to configure the interface, and it does fine for setting a static address or DHCP address, but the interface (eth0) is not active at boot.
As soon as I run ifup eth0, it will use the assigned IP or pull DHCP based on settings, but I can't seem to get it to automatically activate at boot. And yes, /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 does have ONBOOT=yes set. I need two things...
1 - are there any good cli tools, ncurses or such like netcfg I can install to manage the interface (I have tried the network manager cli tools, maybe I just don't get it, but that isn't working so good for me)
2 - how to make the interface activate at boot.
Fedora Networking :: Connection Eth0 Never Active On Boot
Jul 16, 2011I am trying to sort out some issues following an upgrade from F12.
I have eth0 as the connection I want to use. Prior to the upgrade, this connection was enabled and active at boot.
Now, for some reason after the upgrade it has to be manually enabled at every boot - even though when I go the Network tool, Ethernet Device > General tab - "Activate device when computer starts" is checked.
At every boot time it is inactive.
In all the ifcft-eth0 files, the ONBOOT parameter is set to "yes".

Jul 13, 2010Is there any way to make a disk image of an active partition? I have to get a complete backup (partitions, MBR, all data files) of my server without bringing it down to do it. I want to have a backup that, in the event of a system failure of any sort, I can quickly restore onto a new, bare hard disk and have the system back up and running. The windows equivalent of this would be something like Drive Image XML, this is the functionality I am looking for.

Aug 24, 2010After a long time, I hit the wall. I upgraded my server from Fedora Core 9 to 10 through yum. The first 2 days it worked happily but the 3rd day I started getting the feeling of being doomed. Bad Magic Block started haunting me and due to several services being failed, I had to restart the server. That was the last time I saw it alive.
During boot, my 34 LVM partitions are active but its not able to mount /dev/root. I did the checked the grub and its fine. I tried rescue CD but still can't utilize most of the lvm, vgscan, vgchange commands as it gives me same 'bad magic block' error. My /proc/partition and /sys/block shows me that only 3 out of 5 HDD are active. how to resurrect the OS?

Aug 18, 2009I have a Fedora 11 PC, which I want to connect to the ldap server at my organisation. When my /etc/ldap.conf file is in place, the machine will not boot past "starting system messagebus" and just hangs there. I have to press the reset button, and boot it into single user mode, and remove /etc/ldap.conf, and only then will it boot. The ldap.conf file is fine, I think, because if you boot the machine up without ldap.conf, then log in.
I can put ldap.conf in place and immediately I can see all the user accounts etc. from the ldap server. If I then reboot, with ldap.conf in place, it hangs on boot again. I found a bug report for FC5 which stated this problem, but there was no solution. There was a workaround, making messagebus starting later in the boot process (move it from S22 to S27 in rc3/5.d), but that didn't help in my case.
My ldap.conf contains this (I've removed my actual ldap info):
host my.server.ip.addr
base dc=my,dc=dn
uri ldap://ldap.mydomain.com
ssl no
tls_cacertdir /etc/openldap/cacerts
pam_password md5
bind_policy soft
As I say, I think the ldap config is fine, because you can start it manually once the machine has booted up without an ldap.conf in place. I lifted it from a Centos client, which works fine and doesn't have the same problem with booting that Fedora does.

The Linux user to connect to Windows machine, you should open an application 'XYZ' automatically, and only this, denying any unauthorized access. When you close the application 'XYZ' communications (RDP?) Should be terminated. Do I need a log of accesses and possible attempts to circumvent the system and access other application.

(In Windows, I have to uncheck the "use passive FTP" option in Folder Options in order to connect) Is there a way to do this with Ubuntu's Connect to Server system/Nautilus? Feb 20, 2011I have an issue with the manner in which Network Manager is configuring the network and short of ditching Network Manager I can see no solution.The issue : Getting a machine to update its machine name in the DNS serverSounds simple doesn't it I operate a FreeBSD based firewall / DHCP / DNS server, using a default Network Manager DHCP configuration the Fedora clients do not register their names with the DNS server when they obtain an address.
I have traced the communications with Wireshark and the Fedora clients are NOT supplying the PC's hostname as part of the exchange so this is NOT a DNS server configuration issue. If I uncheck the option 'Automatically obtain DNS information from provider' under the DHCP settings the Fedora clients DO register the hostname that is put into the Hostname (optional) databox. They do NOT however store the DNS server IP address or any other records defined by the DNS server.
Is there some hidden settings or is this a bug because it isn't acceptable 'DHCP' behaviour if it isn't possible to automatically set DNS server IP addresses and at the same time register the hostname during the DHCP negotiation. Before it is said I know I can use a fixed DNS IP address but am not prepared to long term, I am also not prepared to define the Fedora clients with a 'static' IP. I am similarly not interested in playing around with scripts or any other such 'frigs' to achieve what should be a standard activity - registering a host with DNS during the DHCP negotiation.

Jan 5, 2011Currently I am working at a college as a student worker, and one of the classes that needs to take place requires that Fedora 12 be installed. Now, this isn't greatly important, but so far on a few of the installs I cannot get the Ethernet device to actually become active. I've tried restarting the computer, reinstalling Fedora 12, and going into the actual network area to click on "Activate" but it is grayed out. So currently, a few machines cannot connect to the internet - including the professor station. I'm not entirely sure what to do here, since most other posts I have read reported that they were able to actually click on "Activate" and it would work.
Right now, the computers are connected to the internet. The jacks do work as they were tested with computers that are able to connect to the net themselves. These computers NICs do work too as we have separate hard-drives in them booting into XP, which do connect to the net without problem.Any help would be appreciated. If anymore information is required, please let me know. I'll do my best to provide you with this information.

Aug 20, 2010Most of the time when I go back to my computer, eth0 has disconnected if left overnight or several hours, and takes around 30 secs to reconnect to my router, finding it a little annoying as the reason I leave the computer on is for quick access to the internet.My computer is connected to the router via an ethernet cable.Used Mandriva and Windows XP on this same hardware for awhile and never came across this.How do I keep the connection to the router active?

Dec 4, 2010I have a Lenovo T500 laptop with 4 GB RAM. I have installed Windows 7 64bits OEM on my laptop HD. I also installed Fedora 14 on my USB External Hard Drive which it has it own boot sector. I don't want to have a dual boot. So if I plug in my external HD to my laptop and turns the machine on, it automatically my Fedora comes up, other wise my windows 7. (I set up start-up boot drive , first to USB External HD and then internal HD)
I installed KVM (Virtual Machine Manger) on my Fedora 14 and I am trying to install windows 7 64bits OEM on my Fedora 14 as Virtual Machine. After setting everything and start installing windows form CD, I got BLUE SCREEN right after "WINDOWS FILES LOADING..." finished. it shows me a blue screen and then it will stop
Questions:
1- How can I fix that problem?
2- Is ther way to make a Virtual Machine on my Fedora using my exiting installed windows 7 on my laptop HD?

Nov 8, 2010A couple of days ago I Obtained a spare computer and installed fedora 14 on it, just to try it out. I only have experience with microsoft windows so I'm new to this system. The OS seems to work fine but I can't browse the internet with firefox. I'm using a speedtouch 546 v6 modem with adsl(wired). The network manager indicates that the wired connection "auto eth1" is active. The previous OS was windows xp. I was able to browse the internet whit this OS. I removed it because it was crashing all the time (illegal version).

Ubuntu :: Make Active Window Appear Below Panel
Jun 26, 2011So I was thinking of having my bottom panel just for harbouring active windows. I thought also to uncheck expand so it will grow larger when more windows are active. All of which is not a problem. But there's one thing stopping me from doing this.
Currently the active window stops when it reaches either panel.
[forgot to edit the green bar out. Ops. Ignore it.] So in either bottom corner nothing is displayed. How can I get the active window to go all the way to the bottom of the screen. Whilst the panel still appears above the active window? [Probably won't have transparent panel when doing this.]

Jul 20, 2011I have an old unuseable computer at home that became useless after a hard disk failure. I don't want to spend money on buying a new PATA IDE HDD for it, so I was wondering if I can use a PXE boot server on my notebook (using a virtual machine with Linux) and boot a Linux on the old machine with PXE without using Hard Disk. It is possible? Do I will need to make some extra configuration or use some specific enviroment do do this?

But to do this, I have to log in, get the IP address, log off, then log in via SSH. How do I make the machine receive an IP address during the boot-up!
