Ubuntu Networking :: 8.04 - Gain IP Address At Machine Boot

Mar 9, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 8.04, and I am able to access my machine via SSH, but I only want the log in screen visible on the machine itself, yet still able to work with the SSH. But to do this, I have to log in, get the IP address, log off, then log in via SSH. How do I make the machine receive an IP address during the boot-up!

Networking :: Determine The IP Address Of A Machine?

Apr 6, 2009

I'm just an undergrad with duck tape and google searches to hold this place together. Anyways on to my question. Where I work, we have a tape library but no way to configure it, the backup software simply talks to the robot to load and unload tapes. There is a network port on the library and I do have the software, but have been running into problems getting access. I was wondering, is there a way to determine the ip address of this machine by plugging in a cross over cable with a laptop and scanning it? What tools could I use to do this?

Ubuntu Networking :: OpenDNS - 8.04 Machine Do Not Always Resolve Internet Address

Nov 17, 2010

I have an odd thing going on with DNS. I have two machine's running Ubuntu and for some reason they do not always resolved internet addresses on my Internet connection. This has gone on since the Ubuntu 8.04 when I first started using Ubuntu. Anyway, I use OpenDNS' DNS servers and I have been running perfectly.

This is what is odd. My Windows XP Machine never has the problem. It always resolves. Does Windows Possibly have some Microsoft hosted DNS server hard coded in there as a backup? Things are working fine this way so I am not looking to change. I am just a little puzzled and finally got around to asking, "Why is this".

General :: Networking - Changing MAC Address In A Machine (fedora 8)

Jun 24, 2010

I am doing a test on MAC learning and for that ,I need to change my MAC address of linux machine while the interface is UP. To be more clear, consider eth1 in a fedora core 8 machine. And while the interface is UP. I am running a script which changes the MAC address from 10:1:1:1:1:1 to 50:50:50:50:50:50 (i.e 50 times MAC address is changed) . When I try to change the MAC address when the interface it UP, it gives me the following error :

siocsifhwaddr : device or resource busy

I know the way of changing the MAC address by bringing down the interface but I need to know if this can be done while the interface is UP.

Ubuntu Networking :: What Could Do To Reset Password Or Gain Access To Router?

Jan 14, 2011

I have a friend that recently moved to Linux. She had started out with Ubutnu 9.04, which was giving her a lot of Issues along with being no longer supported, so I recommend Linux Mint 10 to her, since she wanted something closer to Windows. I instructed her on how to do a clean install. Linux Mint installed ok, but when she was about to set up wireless to get on the Internet, she realised that she had forgotten her password. She called her network (Belkin) for assistance to retrieve it. She was told that Linux is not really supported; however they gave her this address to access the router: 192.186.2.1 from her browser which did not work. So there was nothing further they could have done since she couldn't gain access to the router. She is currently only able to use Ethernet connection to get online.

What could she do to reset her password or gain access to the router? I didn't want to tell her to reset the modem in case it will leave her with no internet and no way to setup her router.

Ubuntu Networking :: Change WLAN0 MAC Address At Every Boot

Jul 29, 2011

change my WLAN0 MAC address in my Kubuntu Natty 64 bit at every boot. I have done quite a bit of searching and found some procedures that appear to have worked back in 9.04 and before days but I have been unable to get anything to work for me in my 11.04 install. I have tried adding a script to if.pre-up.d and also tried adding a bootmisc.sh and either I did them wrong or they are not working. I want to make sure that every time I bring the wireless up in Kubuntu that I have the changed MAC address. I usually keep wireless disabled and turn it on just when I need it.

Background so you don't think I am doing something nefarious... I am going on a cruise soon. The cruise line sells wireless internet subscriptions for the duration of the cruise but they tie it to a MAC address. I am bringing my CDMA android phone that unless I use VOIP will be unable to call at all or at least with very high charges. But I also want to be able to browse the internet with my laptop. I figure it will be easier to spoof my phones MAC with the PC than the other way around. I just need to turn one device off if I am using the other. I need the MAC address to be semi permanent so I don't turn it on by mistake and have forgotten to change the MAC.

Ubuntu Networking :: Static IP Address And The Install Configures For A DHCP Configured Address - Network Not Starting

Dec 16, 2010

Version 10.04 LTS. Installed desktop version and network worked but I needed a static IP address and the install configures for a DHCP configured address. I tried changing to static address using the System->Preferences->Network Connections application but was unable to get the system to come up with the network up.

So I manually modified the /etc/network/interfaces and the /etc/resolv.conf files. I restart the system but when I do an ifconfig, I don't see a configured IP address on eth0 (only the loopback address). If I run /sbin/ifup eth0 everything then works fine and ifconfig shows the correct address bound to eth0.

My files are as follows:

Slackware :: Which IP Address To Use When I List Machine Name In /etc/hosts?

Jul 21, 2010

1) I'm not sure which IP address to use when I list my machine name in /etc/hosts, particularly after reading:

Quote:

By the w]ay, Arnt Gulbrandsen <agulbra@nvg.unit.no> says that 127.0.0.1 # should NEVER be named with the name of the machine. It causes problems # for some (stupid) programs, irc and reputedly talk. :^)

Here's what I have now:
Code:
root@eagleswing:~# hostname
eagleswing
root@eagleswing:~# cat /etc/HOSTNAME
eagleswing.5binc

[Code]...

I'm not certain how to include my router in /etc/hosts so I can use it to link my PCs as stated above. I was thinking of writing (see above link):

192.168.2.1 localbelkin Will this work & is it proper?

3) Do I need to make use of any other IP addresses at this link? What are the WAN IP & Default Gateway addresses used for? I am going to be serving documents & running scripts on Apache.

Networking :: Mounting XP Network Drive On Machine Works Manually But Not On Boot Up?

Dec 13, 2008

I know this has been covered in many threads before, but I'm stuck not finding my exact situation or an answer. I'm a newbie using a Debian Linux machine as the client and Windows XP machine as the server. I have successfully mounted the XP Network drive on the Linux machine using commands from the root terminal:

mount -t smbfs -o username="Windows Username",password=windowspassword //XPcomputername/folder /mountpoint/

However when I put the command in the ect/fstab file as suggested in several posts, I don't get any result on boot up. I.e. I can't get the network drive to mount on start up, I always have to manually mount it from the root terminal.
