Fedora :: Auto-Restart Of Networking?
Jun 13, 2010
I have a server box running F12. Whenever networking is lost up-stream, obviously, my box loses it and the networking icon gets the "red" cancellation sign over it.Now, when up-stream connectivity returns, Fedora does not auto-connect. Instead I have to manually go to my office (grrrr), and simply click on the networking icon, click on the unselected radio button next to eth0 (its the only network interface), and I'm good again. To save me future weekend trips to the office.... How can I make sure this happens automatically

Just noticed that auto connection to my wired ethernet is not being established after restarts I'm making. Never recall this in the past. I do get an auto connect when I shutdown and restart. I'm using 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx.
Also have noticed that nearly every upgrade over the past week or so is calling for restart to complete the upgrade. Can there be any unwanted problems in doing several upgrades over a period of several days before doing the restart? I'd like to think not.
As you can imagine these two issues together are causing some lost time.

Nearly every time that automatic updates finishes installing the software and requires a restart of the OS, the PC locks up at the 'Ubuntu' screen with some dots beneath it.
I have been just been forcing it down by powering off/on the PC - which I figure is probably not a safe thing to do but don't know what else to do or how to troubleshoot this problem.
I've looked at some of the log files but can't make any sense of most of them nor do I know which log file might show the problem.

I've just installed Ubuntu on my laptop. My laptop has an nVidia card so I'm forced to use the nVidia configuration tools. What I'd like to happen is for it to automatically start using my monitors if they're detected. OR, make a simple script that will enable the monitors without needing to restart X.

I have noticed that a common issue to several distros is the fact that the networking subsystem doesn't automatically detect the link if an ethernet connection is disconnected and then re-connected to the NIC after boot. If the ethernet cable is connected after the system is up and running, nothing happens - ethtool eth0 shows link detected: no, and you have to restart the network service to let the NIC know that there is in fact a link, and actually connect. I have a Fedora14 (KDE) box with a brand new Asus motherboard with embedded NIC. Everything works great except the auto-detect of a freshly connected ethernet connection if the link is down to begin with.
Am I missing a ethernet link sentinel utility or something, or is this just the way linux works? I have done plenty of research on plenty of posts, and it seems this is a common problem, with no solution other than manually or programatically restarting the network service in a script to detect the link after a disconnect.

i'm new on board and new for linux.i installed fc 9, and it's look ok. i want to use stutic ip,so i did what i find here:uote:First, NetworkManager and static ip addresses do not get along. If you want to use static ip addresses, turn off the NM services by going to "system->administration->services" and disable the NM services and reboot.Next, goto "system->admin->network", highlight your device and click the "edit" tab and configure the device. Uncheck the "controlled by NM option" and "automatically obtain ip address" BUT then place a check in the "allow users to control" and "activate on boot"Then click the "dns" tab and fill in your dns servers ip addresses.the problem is that is no internet connection after reboot. than i go to system->admin->network,and activate the device and all ok.

I'm running fc10 x64 - latest updates. First I could never get wake on lan to work - spent days working on that one. Now, when I restart after a hibernate my eth0 is not re-enabled or recognized anymore. About to give up on Fedora.
I've tried service network restart.
I've tried unplugging cable and plugging back in.
I've tried init.d/networkmanager restart.
Only reboot works.
I've spent so much time trying to configure Fedore Core 10 for a Dynamips server and it's just not ready on some of the essential things like this hibernate problem and also wake on lan.

I have been using Fedora since almost 1 week by now, and I'm really impressed by its features but there is one very small problem that I face everyday. At the first place, I had setup a profile settings for Network so all my static IP, Hosts, DNS servers were all configured in that profile. Now I had filled in something in the Primary DNS Server and then I had saved it. The internet works after that but when I reboot, that Primary DNS server gets deleted. I have to type it all the time and then click on save and then start using the internet again.

I have a problem with samba machine disappearing after I restart smb or the server where samba is running. Lets say I name my samba server ABC and set it up via system-config-samba utils. I follow basic steps and fill out everything according to most guides that are available for fedora. After that everything works great, I can connect to samba server ABC form any machine through smb://ABC (mac) or \ABC (win), however as soon as I restart smb services or my server (subsequently restarting the smb service ...) I no longer can connect to it via samba server name ABC, I can only do smb://SambaServerIP or \SambaServerIP (have to put numerical internal ip to connect)
My smb.conf:
# cat /etc/samba/smb.conf

I wrote a C++ program that uses serial port in fedora. Since normal user has no permission to read/write to /dev/ttySx, the program doesn't work. if I changed the permissions using chmod in su, it will works for that session. When restarts the permission changed to default again. So what to do a normal user program to access /dev/ttyS0?

Im trying to maximize my network connectivity. To do this I have begun using the program ethtool. The first thing I did was run
Code:
#ethtool eth0
which informed me Im running 10BaseT mode. So i though, ok, that has to do with the autoneg right?
so I ran:
Code:
# ethtool -s eth0 speed 1000 duplex full autoneg off
[Code]...
LOLz, I got it now, This computer has 2 nics installed! Thats why the link stat was "Link detected: no"
I moded my code to pertain to eth1, the connected port. Eh, anyhow, Im still not sold on this problem being solved, the connection eth1 seems to work fine at 100BaseT/Full but I loose connectivity when trying to use 1000BaseT/Full despite the nic showing it as a supported mode.

I'd like to know how to configure Fedora 14 so my VPN connects and reconnects itself automatically, since the "connect automatically" thing I checked in the network manager doesn't work.Is there a way to make sure that everything uses the VPN, so when for some reason the VPN is disconnected the applications will wait for the VPN to reconnect itself instead of switching to the regular network ?Also since it's pptp VPN I tried to disable Ipv6 but I don't know how to check if I successfully did it, can you guys give me the command line to check that ?

If I restart the network service, not all interfaces come back up. Is this expected behaviour or does something need a kick?
Code:

Shutting down interface eth0: [ OK ]
Shutting down interface wlan0: [ OK ]
Shutting down loopback interface: [ OK ]
Bringing up loopback interface: [ OK ]

I got a little problem with network manager. I got two connections in it, with two different DNS-Servers, because the one of my provider is very slow I surf with opendns, but sometimes that slows down too, so I want to change if necessary. Both connections got the same fixed IP.That worked all fine, until I got my new router (it's a Netgear WGU 624). It's connected by cable and I configured it like the old one. But for some reason instead of connecting to the manually configured connections, my fedora 10 creates a new one "auto eth 0" with a dynamic IP. So every time I boot or switch on from standby my PC connects with this one and I have to manually set it to the right connection. There's no chance to edit or delete it cause those two buttons are grey and won't work. I also tried restarting network manager manually and I also tried starting it with su as root.

My network is windows pppoe. How can I configure it for Fedora 11? Is there any graphical configuration tool available for that? Also, ubuntu 9.04 logs into pppoe network after restarting as I've made some changes in /etc/network/interfaces. Is there any option available for Fedora 11 to automatically log in to pppoe network after restarting?

On FC10, when system boots up, it would auto detect (from DHCP) and configure eth0.
This does not happen on FC11, but I can manually configure the interface. The entries in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 are identical on both OS releases.
Don't know if this is related, but when I run System->Administration->Bootloader, it fails system-config-boot - missing module kudzu.

A couple of days ago I Obtained a spare computer and installed fedora 14 on it, just to try it out. I only have experience with microsoft windows so I'm new to this system. The OS seems to work fine but I can't browse the internet with firefox. I'm using a speedtouch 546 v6 modem with adsl(wired). The network manager indicates that the wired connection "auto eth1" is active. The previous OS was windows xp. I was able to browse the internet whit this OS. I removed it because it was crashing all the time (illegal version).

I have edited my /etc/fstab file in order to have it automatically mount a windows network share at startup.
The problem is, that it isn't really working during startup. After I log in, in order to make it mount I have to open the terminal and enter "mount -a".
The following is my fstab file:
Code:
I suspect this has something to do with my laptop not having made a network connection when the entries are mounted, but I'm not sure. How would I go about finding out about any errors?

I have installed F11 on my Dell Inspiron 1501. I tried to get the Broadcom 4311 wireless card to work by following the instructions for installing the Broadcom driver from this link: [url].
That resulted in the following errors when I gave the command:
Code:
I removed the broadcom-wl package and installed the autoen package from DangerMouse. After rebooting wireless works but I still get the same errors when I give the command:
Code:
I had to disable encryption on the router to connect, but I guess that's a compromise I'll have to make right now. I will work on that some more after I get these error messages straightened out:
Code:
Note that wireless does seem to be working (though without encryption) despite the error messages. And I got these same error messages with the Broadcom driver but I could not get wireless working.

The auto connect feature of NetworkManager Applet (version 0.7.997) isn't working on my system. If the WiFi connection dies, Network Manager doesn't detect that the connection has been lost and try to reestablish the connection. I have to manually click on the WiFi hotspot to reestablish the connection. This appears to be the case both while the computer is running and when I first boot it up (i.e. when booting, if the first attempt at establishing a WiFi connection doesn't succeed, Network Manager doesn't retry or try another hotspot). Is this "normal" behavior for Network Manager? If not, does anyone know a fix? Here's some more info about my system:

WiFi Chip: Broadcomm BCM4238
