Ubuntu :: Changed 2nd CD/DVD Player From Swap To Default
Aug 22, 2010
I'm running Windows 7 and Ubuntu(latest version), dual boot, and I've locked myself out of Ubuntu. I have 2 hard disks and 2 cd/dvd drives. I was working on getting my 2nd hard drive to mount on boot up and succeeded. I should have left well enough alone, but I changed the 2 cd drive from swap to default, (just to see if it would mount automatically), and now I can't boot into ubuntu. It just hangs. I can't even in get using recovery mode because the updated graphics drivers won't allow me to read the screen during the boot into ubuntu until the boot has completed. If anyone has any ideas, please help. It had been working pretty well until this set back.

I changed the default player for mp3 to audacious, which works fine, just that every time I doubleclick a mp3 file, a second application button appears in my taskbar saying "opening [file]" which looks like the default player. this program will eventually time out and go away, but it's still annoying - any idea on how I would go about fixing this?

Someone (not me) recently installed some new distros on my HD. It seems that during the installation my swap partition was reformatted and a new UUID was assigned to it. I have the following questions:
1. I know that I have to change the swap partition UUID in /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst of the affected distros. Is there anything else that needs to be changed?
2. I presume a similar change has to be made to the Grub 2 configuration, for those distros that use Grub 2. I have no experience using Grub 2 so how do I make the change or where can I find instructions to do it?

I recently upgraded my laptop from 10.04, to 10.10. -- And in so doing reinstalled the OS from scratch, and letting the system pick the partition sizes.
Code:
My system:
2GB RAM
160 GB HDD
HP 6910p
Here's the question: The Installer set aside 6GB as Swap space, leaving 154GB as a / partition for everything. I had always thought 2GB was plenty, or as a general rule twice the Physical Memory size, which would only be 4GB swap, not 6.
Can / should I reclaim some of that swap space, if so how much. -- I can using tools like GParted to resize the partitions. -- Or just leave it as is. Unfortunately, the Ubuntu 10.10 installed did not seem to use GParted, so it was a little harder to set up initially.

I wrote a C++ program that uses serial port in fedora. Since normal user has no permission to read/write to /dev/ttySx, the program doesn't work. if I changed the permissions using chmod in su, it will works for that session. When restarts the permission changed to default again. So what to do a normal user program to access /dev/ttyS0?

As far as I know hard drives are faster at the beginning of the disk. If this is true, why does Ubuntu put the swap partition to the back of the disk by default?

How do I set VLC as the default DVD player in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS?There seems to be no obvious way to change in which player the DVD's open up in - you can only choose the default media player, but this is not what I want to do.I would like VLC as a default for DVD viewing only - I use Totem for other video files. I used Kaffeine for a while to play DVD's, but found VLC to be superior, especially in DVD menu support.
I know there are threads about how this is done in previous versions (like in 8.04 and so on), but I'm not sure if those still apply for 10.04? Through gconf-editor

Since upgrading to Lucid, I haven't been able to play videos in Totem or VLC player, though I've got all the necessary codecs. The sound plays, but I just get a black screen with (very) occasional flashes of the image. However, I've found that SMPlayer DOES work.
Is there a way to make it the default, so that when I double-click the vids, it will fire up automatically, instead of my having to use right-click/open-with ? I've tried changing it in the multimedia tab of 'Preferred Software', but that doesn't seem to work.

I would like to set xine as my default player for DVD playback and cannot figure out how. I have read other posts that state to right click on file>properties>open with but do not seem to have the open with option when right clicking a dvd that is in my dvd drive. I would also like to change the open with option in the right click menu. The current option is to open with movie player, and movie player cannot seem to find additional plug ins to open file with.

I prefer VLC over totem, but I can't seem to make it the default. What I've tried:Right click on a video file, select "Open with Other Application..." select VLC, check "remember this application..." click Open. Then I close VLC, double click on the video file and... it opens in Totem.I checked out system>preferences>preferred applications, but under multimedia all I could select is music playback.

I've tried everything first I tried with Preferences/Preferred Applications - no result. then File Type Manager from Ubuntu Tweek - nothing... I tried with a few older Exaile versions (from various repo's) - nothing... compiling 0.3.1.1 from source - still nothing. with these I can set every other player to be default player (so, only Exaile refuses to obey). to be more exact, after setting Exaile as default, double-click on any audio file associated with it results with temporary CPU usage increase and than NOTHING :S just don't tell me to use VLC, Audacious, Rhythmbox, Amarok, QL or any other player... I used them all but I NEED Exaile (and not just because it looks beautiful enough with Ambiance to make me completely forget foobar2k... and because it's sooo stubborn ).

I finally got the server running. All seems OKAY, however I want to change the default player on my server. As of now, when I upload a file, it plays but has no "play/pause/stop/mute/fullscreen" buttons. How do I get those? I've tried installing FFMPEG, MPlayer and a few others to no avail. Please suggest a tried&true method of allowing for this. I need it to be able to at least play audio(mp3) and video(mp4,wmv,avi,flv)

I am trying to set my default media player as MPlayer and selecting it with a right click in the menu, open with and then telling it to open with every time. It then opens it in MPlayer that time no problem but then next time I just double click on the file (or any file with same type) it just opens it with the original default player. I've tried using SMplayer as well as default and it does the same thing. I'm on Ubuntu 10.04.

Using Ubuntu 11.04, Totem (the default media player) is not able to seek (read: to forward or go back in time) whenever the file is read from a mounted ISO archive.
Whenever I extract individual media files from such an archive, the seek bar at the bottom works as it should. Thus, it can be ascertained that it is not the media files that are the source of the problem, here.
why that is doing so? Sounds like a bug, or what?

If I take out the existing video card and put in another one of a different type (but not a different brand), how does Ubuntu behave? I know what Windows typically does. Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.

I really like using Audacious, but Rhythmbox (which isn't as horrible as iTunes, admittedly, but I still don't think much of that style of player) is set up as the default audio player on my laptop. I'm running Lucid Lynx on it. When I go to System > Preferences > Preferred Applications, Audacious doesn't come up in the drop-down menu under the Multimedia tab. Anyone know of any way I can change this from Rhythmbox to Audacious?
