Fedora Networking :: No Web Access - But Have Connection
Dec 22, 2010
I just installed a fresh install of Fedora 14. I am able to get a wireless DHCP connection in order to download Fedora updates. I am able to ping google successfully in terminal. I am even able to browse the web in Lynx
However, firefox can not connect to anything other than the fedora.org website.
I do not have any proxies listed. I am not working "offline" on firefox.

I have fedora 10 and am having problems with the wireless access. My computer uses the Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless Adapter. It connects to the network, it gets an ip address and a broadcast address, but it loses connection within 3 min. I'm also new dealing with linux and fedora.

I am attempting to connect Ubuntu 9.10 to the Internet.I have a network connection, and Karmic detects it fine. I can ping addresses within our network (e.g. the Windows computer in the next room), and I can ping the router, but if I ping, say www.google.com, it says "Destination Net Unreachable". Previously, in Jaunty, I had a similar problem.I found a workaround: launch Pidgin. Somehow, launching Pidgin temporarily edits my configuration. However, in Karmic, I have no access to Pidgin, however, and Empathy does not do the same thing. Since I have no Internet, I cannot "sudo apt-get install" anything. How can I get the Internet working?

I have recently installed ubuntu 9.10. Earlier I had ubuntu 9.04. On that my internet was running perfectly well. After installation I created new connection as I had done for 9.04 version using "Network connections , Edit connections". However, after configuring connection(uname , password etc.) I wasn't able to access Internet. So I tried using "pppoeconf" utility. After using this now whenever I click on network connections applet on top panel , it shows in menu "device not managed".Can somebody point out what went wrong and what to do so as to be able to acess Internet in ubuntu?

I had been happily using a wireless connection for about two weeks. The connection then went down for a few days. Since it came back up, I can connect to the network, but cannot access the internet. Other users of the network can both connect to the network, and access the internet, though people have experienced the same problem as me the last time the network went down (they could connect to the network but not access the internet). I have tried deleting and re-starting the connection, to no avail. I have looked around the forums, but haven't found anything that can help: do any of you have any suggestions? I am malarial and at the end of tether. It is not a problem with Ipv6, which is set to ignore, as it was in the past when the connection workedI am running Ubuntu 10.10 on an X61 Thinkpad. Below is the output of iwconfig, route -n, lspci, and what happens when I ping other network
Iwconfig:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1d:72:9e:09:8f
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

My Internet connection works.Using no VPN connection, I can access the Tnternet from the gnome-terminal (ping, apt-get, lynx), as well as from any GUI application. As soon as I establish a VPN connection via openconnect, GUI applications such as firefox, transmission and thunderbird still work. But terminal applications (such as mutt, apt-get etc), some daemons (like mpdscribble) and some GUI applications (such as the easytag cddb search) don't work anymore.

As I view it, Ubuntu has a great security risk in that it still allows internet access when the VPN connection has been lost, for whatever reason. As it is now, when the VPN connection fails you get bumped back to using your regular IP, and whatever you are doing becomes transparent to anyone watching. This is simply unacceptable for an allegedly secure platform. Does anyone know of a way to fix this with a script/program, or is there a distribution/OS that allows this? Windows re-dials the vpn automatically, but still allows internet access in the mean time.

Okay, a couple of weeks ago I was running 10.04, got an auto update that needed a firefox restart, so rather than restart, I just shutdown the computer for the weekend. When I booted the computer on Monday it would find sites (www.google.com, start.ubuntu.com) but it wouldn't download the necessary items to load the page. Now I have a windows laptop sitting next to the ubuntu box and it was online with no issues, so I know it wasn't the connection itself. So I decided that the update messed up the system so I downloaded 10.10 and installed that and ran that all last week.
On Friday I got a system update that required a firefox restart, so I ran firefox for the day and decided that since it was friday, I would just shutdown the computer and reboot on Monday.Well now Monday is here and now I again have sloooowww internet, to the point that URL.. times out and won't come up. I have tried doing a traceroute on both machines and the windows box gets all the way to www.google.com, but the ubuntu box gets about halfway there and then gets no response. I am at a loss, I don't want to reinstall every week. I did try to reboot and run the previous version of 10.10 that shows in the boot menu, but that does the same thing. One thing I did notice is that the broadcast ip is different than the machine IP, don't know enough to know if this is a problem.

10.04 in a couple of identical lenovo laptops (of friends) suddenly have stopped connecting successfully to wireless, coinciding approximately with a mains power socket fail at the modem router, now fixed. presumably the machines were trying to connect to the access point, which may or may not have been working, but themodem router was not. Now, internet connection and wireless access point is fixed ok and is back up, and i can connect wirelessly to the access point ok using an eeepc with 10.04.2 with no problem so the access point is working ok
the target laptop/s are still ok via wired ethernet, and can *also* connect to a neighbours open wireless (a british telecom so called fon network, it asks for an account password), and all local wireless networks can be seen normally, and the home access point ssid can also be seen ok. so the aptop wireless is connecting ok, but not to this particular access point now. maybe someting has got screwed up? it is wpa2 and when clicked, after a long-ish time, the authentication is requested, then given, correctly, and still not connecting, asks for authentication again etc etc. no local secure wallet is being used.
when upgrading these laptops for my friend some time ago from 9.04 i have a small recall that 10.04 had a odd thing with wireless authentication (?) bug? i have deleted the network connections gui listing for this ssid and restarted the laptop, still no joy.

I am trying to figure out how I can see which access point my wireless card is connected to. I have a slackware system and. Basically, I know my card is connected to something, because firefox can do a google search, but I'm not sure what network it is connected to, since there are a couple open networks in my apt complex. Is there a command to list the ssid? that I'm connect to? and, I'm new to all this so I'm not sure if ssid is the correct term. I have a consumer grade netgear wireless "router" that I bought from bestbuy which has a "passphrase".

I have Ubuntu command line only installed on my HTPC (it is XBMC Live installation). Kernel is 2.6.31-16-generic. My wi-fi card is AW-NE770 from AzureWave (mini-pci on Zotac Atom motherboard). I have successfully configured wireless connection to my router. Unfortunately, after short period of time connection drops. When I restart /etc/network/interfaces all goes back to normal. When connection is dropped, iwconfig shows that access point is not assigned. I have already tried installing backport drivers, removing security on the network (WEP and WPA), assigning static IP or using DHCP. Nothing works. I know it is not the router or my internet because I can be at the same time on my laptop and that works fine.

Recently I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 in which I had connected to the internet by way of terminal (pppoeconf) and I could access any site with ease. But one fine day suddenly I could not access the net, I try to locate the notification icon (network manager),but could not find it.I did this and that, googled it trying to find the solution but alas to my disappointment I had to format it.
After reinstallation of Ubuntu I connect the internet by way of editing connection on panel and i could access the net. The problem is that I could not access some site especially org site e.g Home - Desiring God so can anybody guide me in how to connect in most better way.

I need to install a program by using the address http://255.255.255.255. However, when I type this address in my browser, I get the following error: "Failed to connect. Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at 255.255.255.255. Though the site seems valid, the browser was unable to establish a connection." Is there an easy way to put this site into the air?

I need to access all PCs in our LAN via ssh from our server in order to do some maintenance. All of them have Ubuntu or Kubuntu Lucid Lynx. Some of the PCs allow this access with no problems, but most of them not. They just answer "Connection refused". I realized that these PCs don't start sshd at startup. If I type "sudo service ssh start" manually in these PCs then sshd starts and all works. But I need it to be started automatically.
I tried some workarounds to solve with no success. I always tried to run a script at startup that could start ssh. If I write a script with this single command inside (service ssh start) and execute it as root, it doesn't work! It doesn't start ssh. But if I execute the same command directly in the command line, it works. I don't understand this behaviour. Also I don't understant why it doesn't happen to ALL the computers. Some of them start ssh at startup with no problems.

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

I have installed fedora 12 recently. after installation i tried to connect to the internet using BSNL broadband connection. I filled in the details such as IP, Netmask, Gateway and even DNS servers. In the services also I ensured that the network manager services is on. However even though my computer cannot connect to the internet. I then tried the ping test of the modem from the address 192.168.1.1 and found that the ping test is successful. Then i tried the network administrator and there I noticed something unusual.
There are two options in the devices eth0 and eth1 thats ok but the unusual; thing is that the Activate (green button), Deactivate (red button) and even the delete buttons are in the background and I cannot select them. Isthis the problem for the network connectivity.

I installed F13 on a server with dual NICs. I configured both NICs into bonding lacp mode. I also removed the NetworkManager.
Everything seems to work fine, except I cannot connect to internet. I can connect to and from another machine through ssh. I have another server with the same type of networking configuration in FreeBSD working fine. The server is connected to a lacp supporting gigabit ethernet switch. The switch is connected to a router which goes to the modem.

I've lasted a lot longer than usual before resorting to asking around, but I've finally gone delightfully mad. I've been trying to access shares based on Windows 7 Ultimate with limited user access on said shares. I've managed to get into my XP machine, another mate's Vista machine and various Linux boxes with no issues, but that's only for shares that are accessible by everyone. The moment I try to get into a share that requires user credentials, I get "Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED".If I try to access restricted shares (be it machine or folder) through Nautilus, I will get a user logon prompt, but it fails. Using smbclient results in just as little success, and now I'm munching through O'Reiley's Samba manual from '99, after realising that I need to basically learn Samba in its entirety to have a hope in hell at getting this to work. The trouble is though, every HOWTO and relevant forum post I get my hands on all seem to concentrate more on the server side of things, and usually servering from a linux box, not the other way around as I'm trying to.
The above Windows 7 machine won't even allow me to view its share contents, whereas the XP machine previously will allow me to browse, but won't allow me to access folders with restricted access. I'm pretty sure there aren't any major issues with the way the Windows 7 machine is setup, as it can be accessed with logon from my Xbox, Ubuntu machine, XP and Vista, with only Fedora having problems getting in as it constantly fails logon. What I'm trying to establish is, if Ubuntu can get in, is there something in my Fedora samba config I'm missing that's preventing me access? My thanks in advance to those of you who've been able to put up with me rambling.

How does one access a Virtual Box installed Fedora system? I'd like to be able to ssh into this system (locally) but I've no idea how to do this. There is an ip address of 10.0.2.15. Ping doesn't work (ping 10.0.2.15). Should I just go ahead and assign a 192. address to this box before I go any further? It would seem that at this point the system isn't actually a part of my local network and I don't imagine it would be unless it has a 192 address.
