Unable to access our site via eth0. Can access the same site, via same ISP on wireless laptop, or via eth0, but using ip annonymizer service. Have a feel that it could be something obvious, but after digging through Modems firmware I am running out of ideas
View 3 RepliesI managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following
----On the phone---
-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.
-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.
-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"
----On Ubuntu 10.04---
-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server
-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.
-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.
-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd
-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).
-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"
-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.
-Apply policies and start the firewall.

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:
1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.
2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.
So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed ubuntu 10.04 using the wubi installer to dual-boot my machine. Under ubuntu, I am not able to connect to the internet or my router. Everything works fine under windows. I have tried to find relevant information in the forums, but nothing seems to work for me. I have tried disabling ipv6, setting a static ip, but no go. ifconfig shows no IP, dhclient results in no DHCP offers and pinging my router's IP results in Network is Unreachable.

On that my internet was running perfectly well.After installation I created new connection as I had done for 9.04 version using "Network connections , Edit connections". However, after configuring connection(uname , password etc.) I wasn't able to access Internet.So I tried using "pppoeconf" utility. After using this now whenever I click on network connections applet on top panel , it shows in menu "device not managed".Can somebody point out what went wrong and what to do so as to be able to acess Internet in ubuntu?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a 64bits laptop with dual boot (Vista + Ubuntu 9.10) and nVidia chipset. Earlier, I could connect to internet using both the OSs. But now, when I insert the network cable (RJ-45) in the network port, neither of the OSs recognises the network cable. When I click (left click) the network icon in ubuntu (in the right top corner of the desktop), it does not show any available ethernet connection.
I checked in BIOS also there is no mention of network card. Following are the details of the laptop:

I had recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 (64-bit) and I have trouble loading websites. I use a DSL (PPPoE) connection from NetworkManager to connect to the internet. Some sites like this forum site, stack overflow, etc. do not load. Firefox 4 says 'loading...' and then finally times out. I can ping these sites though.
I tried 'wget stackoverflow.com' and Lynx both timed out. wget sends out a request and waits a long time for response before timing out. These sites load perfectly well on my Fedora 14 (64-bit) & Windows XP installations and both these OSes have Firefox 4. From this I assumed that this is not a problem with Firefox (or any other browser for that matter) but it has got something to do with the network configuration.
I faced the same problem with Ubuntu 10.04 too. I use a Dell Inspiron N5010.
I am using Ubuntu 10.04, when connected to the ethernet through , Atheros Communications AR8152 v1.1.I can successfully access the internet. But when I try to use the wireless I can connect to the network using Atheros Communications AR9285, but can't access any internet sites. Or ping any other devices on the network.I'm using an Acer Aspire One D260
View 1 Replies View RelatedStrangest thing...yesterday my 11.04 box lost the ability to access anything external. I can ssh to the box from outside my network, and all other boxes on my network are fine, but this one box can't hit anything external. If I attempt to ping a site it's doing the same resolution, but no packets are delivered.
Up until yesterday it was running fine, and I didn't make any changes to my home network or install any updates. Totally stumped.
Edit: this is a wired connection with a static internal IP.
The problem that I have been struggling with is while connecting to VPN server, I can't connect to other sites.
I am on 11.04, but this have been happening on 10.10 as well.
On Win7, I was able to browse the VPN and the other sites at the same time without any issue.
I also tried by checking ON the "Use this connection only for resources on its network" option (under IPv4 settings tab) but doing that is allowing me to browse all sites except the VPN site. The method that I am using is "Automatic (VPN)".
Need your help to solve this issue.
I see something like internet connection is established. Ive established etho connection but I cant open any sites at all. I also have Windows on another hard disk and it works well. About a week ago I had Ubuntu 8.04 and it worked really fine. What�s wrong? Is there any remedy?

Some sites (particularly https) take very long time to load . Sometimes I get "Page is taking a long time to load . Reload the page later" message.
Now , this is happening for some http webpages also.
This is not a problem with browser.
I have firefox , chrome , chromium and konqueror installed.
Also I can access all these sites properly from windows so it is not problem with my internet connection either.
I have a question which it believe it is quite simple but I have no clue how to do it... I'm using Fedora 12 and I'm the only Linux machine in my office's LAN... I have Apache (httpd) setup and my co-workers can access the sites perfectly by using my IP address, for example [URL]... Have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 in Vmware workstation 6.5.1 and unable to connect to external sites, or servers (using NAT). I can ping on host name and IP but can't resolve either host or IP in browser (Receive message the connection has timed out). I can't ping the host (Windows 7 Professional) IP from the guest and vice versa. I use a mobile wireless network card, and my Windows operating systems work successfully in vmware. Currently in my VMNet8 properties I just have Obtain IP address and DNS Automatically (same as host).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 today, and I can't get any connection through the LAN. I've tried some stuff on my own, but I've been unsuccessful so far. It's not a hardware or connection issue, as it works perfectly fine in Windows 7. I haven't had this issue in any previous version of Ubuntu (or any Linux distro for that matter).The weirdest part is I booted from the installation CD as as LiveCD, and everything worked perfectly fine. It only stops working after I actually install it. Here's the results of ifconfig:

i shut down my ubuntu karmic for a bit. turned it back on after an hour or so and now i have no network connection. i checked all the obvious things like cords etc wife's computer is connected through the same router / modem and no probs here.i even replaced the card in mine.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi've just got a new broadband/wireless connection from Virgin Media and am trying to get this very old laptop online. in the past, cable connections have been easy, and wireless has given issues, but this time its the opposite. so, i have a new cable connection that is all plugged in. called customer support, they have no support for linux as usual, but they 'manually activated' the modem and thats all they can do. i am not trying to setup the wireless network yet, i'll do that with a pc later, for now i just want to plug in and go. on Network Settings, i have set the wired connection to dhcp. thats what i've done before ... not sure if i need to get static addresses from the ISP? i can go online now using the erratic but generous neighborhood free wireless.

Following upgrading my 09.04 partition to 09.10 then 10.04, all was working fine until I tried hibernate out for the first time - big mistake! If I can get to a position where i can log on to the system, I find that my ethernet network connection is disabled and I cannot get it to restart. My 09.10 system still works ok. I am tempted to do a clean install of 10.04, even though I'll have to spend some time reloading the extra's and re-configuring.

The machine was working fine before I installed Ubuntu. I am suprised to see this problem as I have already installed it on a few machines without any problem such as this.
I have a HP Mini running Ubuntu Desktop 10.04, and I cannot get a wired connection to work. My network card is "Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)", and I have the restricted drivers for the card installed. Wireless works fine, though.

I am trying to run a cable from my wireless router over a 75ft cat6 cable to my bedroom. I don't get any connection on my end and I don't have any other ideas. I did setup a m0n0wall box just to try. I got the network led on my server to light up in my room but nothing more than that. Lastly, I tried adding a 5 port switch in my room and then connecting that to my server and nada.
