I and my friend use FC10 on our laptops. We want to share our data by creating a wired network between our machines because a wireless router is something what our pockets can't afford. What should I do for it? What type of wires and stuffs do I need? I Googled for some link for doing so in FC10 but couldn't find.
View 6 RepliesI'm having trouble getting my wifi devices to work on my 128bit WEP network. I have a new Thinkpad T400, with an internal Intel PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN. I also have some cardbus cards: a Lucent ORiNOCO Gold, a Linksys Wireless-G, and a TRENDnet TEW-421PC. I have them set up as interfaces eth2, eth1, and eth3. (The TRENDnet isn't recognised as a network card at all, so no interface for it.) I have installed the latest firmware for the Linksys card.
The /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* files are virtually identical for all of them, differing only in the HWADDR and DEVICE lines. So here's the behaviour:
1. The Lucent card comes up just fine.
2. The internal 5100AGN and the Linksys cards won't come up, and watching with iwconfig shows that they're either associated with my AP OR they've got an encryption key set -- but not both.
3. When trying to bring up the 5100AGN, I get the following messages:
iwlagn: index 0 not used in uCode key table
iwlagn: index 3 not used in uCode key table
/var/log/messages shows DHCPDISCOVER requests being sent, but they're bound to fail since the association with the AP with WEP isn't being completed. And yes, the ifcfg-* files really *are* identical except for the DEVICE and HWADDR lines. The /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file correctly maps the interfaces to the MAC addresses. So why does my antique ORiNOCO card work and thew newer ones fail? How can I track down what's being done wrong/not being done?
I have been running FC8 on this IBM T23 with a D-Link wireless adapter. Using MadWifi this has worked fine with Network Manager disabled. But now I have nuked that installation and replaced it with FC10. Network Manager is nice, and I would like to use it. And it kind-of works. Network Manager recognizes my router and all my neighbor's routers, but I can't connect.

I want to connect them with a wireless router. phillips snb5600 router.
So I can go online and share files with both laptops
My LG E500 laptop to function as a modem with a connection to the internet with a 3g usb modem.
There are built-in wireless LG E500.
My other laptop is an old webtech without wireless built in, but I have a wireless USB thing fully with snb5600 Router. Ubuntu can find the wireless USB thing. so it's not a problem.
Both laptops can also connect with the router with cable.
I have a home network with 2 WINXP machines and one I am trying to load FC10 on. If I get FC10 to work, I will convert the others to FC10. I am trying to access the WINXP machines through my LAN. I have installed samba. I have gone through a lot of places to try to configure samba. Several places say I have to set the security level on the ethernet card using system-config-securitylevel. When I enter this in terminal, I get command not found. I checked with yum and it is installed. I have tried using the menus but cannot find it anywhere. I can see the FC workgroup from one of the WINXP machines but I cannot look into it. It says I don't have the right permissions. I would like to set it so I don't need a userid/password at all. Can I do this?

Using gui /system/administration/network I set up my DNS to the two IP addresses I've been given.
$service network restart
cat /etc/resolv.conf and the secondary DNS has changed to the IP address of my
gateway (router, at 192.168.2.x)
I.e. something is overwriting resolv.conf
Prior to this install, I'd been successfully using fixed IP on the 192.168.2.x range quite happily. Now it only works on DHCP and DNS seems to take an age.
I have a lab of 10 computers with ips from 192.168.1.120 to 192.168.1.130 the server's Ip is 192.168.1.116When I am on client computer I type the server's Ip address on the browser and it works. All i want is that instead of entering my servers Ip I could just enter an address like: example.lan

Both has FC15 installed, networked through WiFi. Tried everything from this forum, (install samba, start samba service, configure samba) but cannot see my shared folder. In Windows it works fine (I can see my WIndows shares from a Fedora laptop, but i cannot see my Fedora shares from a Feroda laptop. Why it is always so difficult to have a simple facility in Linux?

After updating them both, I enabled the RPMFusion repos and installed the akmod-ed wireless driver on each (following these instructions: [URL] Wireless works perfectly on one laptop, but doesn't seem to be working on the other. The wl module is activated (shows up in lsmod) and the wireless card is enabled (wlan0 shows up in ifconfig), but Network Manager isn't showing any available networks. For the record, wireless works on both laptops with Ubuntu 9.10 I am going to try cloning the entire drive on the working laptop and sticking it on the dud one.

I'm currently running FC9 and I have no problem with my network connection. Now I just installed FC10 on another partition too try it out, but I don't seem to get it work. I disabled the NetworkManager (like in FC9) and enabled the Network. I'm using static IP, when in go in Network Configuration/Ethernet Device/General, the subnet mask is always taking the address of the Default gateway address when I press OK.
my subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, and my gateway is 192.168.1.1, but after I press ok they both go back to 192.168.1.1
I recently upgraded my x86_64 system from FC8-FC10 using Pre-Upgrade, and here I got some help fixing all the package conflicts that resulted. Following the first reboot after this massive package update, it appears DNS doesn't work in some apps.
I could ping www.yahoo.com, and nslookup www.yahoo.com resolved the name, but firefox and links couldn't. Typing the ip addr that nslookup gives for www.yahoo.com works fine in both firefox and links. Something's obviously wrong with DNS.
I found a workaround for Firefox which is to browse to about:config and set network.dns.disableipv6 = true. Firefox started resolving names after that.
But then I noticed yum is DNS incapable as well. I don't know how to fix it. Here's what I get:

The machine in question has a static ip addr, and I have static nameserver addrs in /etc/resolv.conf, corresponding to the static settings provided by my isp.
I'm bonding the two NICs on my FC10 server to create a bonded LAG between it and my Cisco Catalyst switch, but during kernel init, the system always give me a notice that "bond0 doesn't appear to exist" so it skips it.Once I log in, I can always open Network Manager and the bond0 interface goes from "Inactive" to "Active" and bond0 immediately works, and I can restart the appropriate network services and everything is fine. But any idea why this bonding wouldn't be initializing during boot up? The ports on the Cisco are configured for hard set speed and duplex and portfast is turned off on them.Is there a guide for best practices for creating LAGs (bonded interfaces) between FC10 and Cisco switches?

Since 2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.x86_64, dhclient wlan0 doesn't seem to work any more.
However, bizarrely, dhclient eth0 does (to the same D-link wireless router).
The AP shows connected - tail /var/log/messages
No working leases in persistent database - sleeping.
WINXP connects just fine. This (B43) has worked nicely ever since FC10 came out, and I was able to use the WiFi at all kinds of places on a recent trip. Other than a couple of yum updates, I don't think anything else has changed since. Other devices on the wlan are getting their DHCP requests satisfied correctly.
Is anyone else having this problem since about a week ago? Perhaps there's something really obvious I'm missing. I can manually assign an IP address to wlan0, manually edit the routing tables and edit /etc/resolv.conf, and then Wifi seems to work OK, so it doesn't seem to be b43 itself unless it is dropping DHCPOFFERS. If this isn't a regression, does anyone have any tips about how to debug this?
my eth0 suddenly stopped working on FC10. i have been using it the whole time, and now it refuses to even ping the gateway. dhclient is not receiving a dhcp offer and when i put in the information manually, it is not even able to ping the gateway. netstat -rn shows that the destination of the router is going nowhere.
i do not think it is the hardware/software, but rather maybe the provider? i am from central europe but just moved up to great britain and working at a friends place. i can connect the mac powerbook without a problem (it will get an ip with dhcp), but not the linux machine.it is a normal ethernet modem connection here. can it be, that it checks MAC addresses or even the computer names? the powerbook also has a really weired IP address: 77.102.xxxxx
i am not using network manager, but command line tools and have nm uninstalled. does anyone have a clue, what this could be about? i am not a newbie, but this is really puzzling me.....
I have just updated KDENetwork to this level and now my F10 doesn't find any wifi connection. By the way, I have been working with F10 for some months without any problem on wlan.

I am a novice who prefers using the GUI. I am trying to connect a home network of two Windows XP Pro laptops with a Linux desktop (Kubuntu 10.04 LTS). The Linux machine connected easily to the Internet through the network gateway and can see both Windows machines. It can read Shared Documents on one Windows machine without authentication but cannot access the second (perhaps because the second is connected directly to the router instead of a hub like the other two).
On the second Windows machine authorization is requested for Shared folders but Administrator and User names and passwords don't work. All machines can be pinged, and Kubuntu has a fixed network IP address. I have read many HowTos and followed some command-line instructions for setting up Samba but may have confused the setup. Now when I get Kubuntu program updates there is an error report for "samba-common". I would like to be able to share files and printers, and also transfer files from Windows to a Linux folder.
I recently built my second general-purpose server, and recently installed fedora core 10 on it. The first thing I attempted to set up after installation was the network - and that's where it's gone wrong When editing a network device using the graphical system-config-network utility, I find that the subnet mask is being automatically changed to match the default gateway address every time I attempt to modify any of its settings (or sometimes even when I cancel the changes). This also means that I cannot set the subnet mask, as it simply won't accept my setting for it. I seem to be able to get around this glitch by setting the subnet mask using the shell version of the same utility, but that doesn't solve my network issue.
Even when I use the shell utility to fix the subnet mask, I'm unable to ping other computers or routers on the network even when ifconfig indicates that the desired ip address has been taken, and other computers on the network are also unable to see the server. I'm using a wired connection and a static IP address on a network with no DHCP.

I have scanned this forum and someone mentioned that support for this adapter should come "out of the box" for FC10. I have a fair amount of experience with Linux command line configuration but am by no means an expert. I have absolutely no experience, however, with wireless.
NB that via iwconfig I get the output below which is giving information about my (currently for now unencrypted) SSID called "activity_logged". Pardon my ignorance but wouldn't this mean that I have wireless enabled and if so how does one access it through the command line? I would also eventually like to go back to encrypted status and access that via command line.

I purchased a Toshiba L500 (64 bit) which ran Win7 Home Premium; I wiped the HD and installed Windows 32 bit Pro. Runs like a top. Even after I installed Win 7 Pro, I had to search back on the Toshiba site for the wireless and Lan drivers to reinstall. I then installed Fedora 13 which gives me use of Win7 but also Fedora; However, does anyone know where there is a copy of an rpm driver (or for that matter a deb driver) for the following; 1. Atheros AR8152 PCI-E Fast ethernet controller and, 2. the Realtek RTL8191SE Wireless Lan 802.11n PCI-E NIC?
Obviously, without the availability of online status for Linux on Laptops, Linux becomes a useless paperweight and I have a very fast new Win7 Pro machine.

I'm experiencing slow speed transfer between two wireless connected laptops running ubuntu 9.10. Using SSH to tranfer files between these two laptops, which connect to the internet via a wirelesss router, with good speed. This is why I'm surprised by this low speed : 52.3 KB/s, averaging 3 hours and 31 minutes for a 700 Mb movie. Is there any way to make this faster ?
