Networking :: Connect Two Laptops Using Crosswire In Ubuntu
Jun 11, 2011
I have a LAN crosswire with rj45 connectors and I want to connect two laptops for data transfer as well as for socket prgramming to check my chat client. I am new to socket programming means also new to networking. Please tell me the basics to connect two computers(setting Ip addresses, gateway and other stuff related to networking) so that it helps me also in my programming and transferring data between computers. If it is not possible to describe everything here then give me a refernce to any book. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 on both computers. Please give me a solution to connect two computers for data transfer and socket programming.

I have two laptops running fedora 9 (32-bit and 64-bit on each system) and I want to connect them together for sharing files. For this I have a cross cable i.e.,a simple cable that is usually used to connect a PC with ADSL modem.

the title of this thread said it all. I've never ever seen a server (unless I've never paid attention) nor used it in my entire life. Having that said, I think you know I'm level 0 when it comes to servers.I start reading here:[URL]Also, I found two threads here which answered couple of questions I had. What I'm planning to do and why?1- Have a home server. I always had that idea of having one sever at home and connect all the other machines (PCs/Laptops) to that server.2- Backup.3- Sharing Files, Pictures, etc.
4- Connect to the interent through the home server. I live in a big house and we have only one ADSL Router/Modem. Obviously, I can't access the internet from any room unless I'm close to the router. The server will be in a place where I could connect to the interent even if I'm very far from the router.5- I've never used Servers before so I'd like to try it now especially I started to use Linux and stopped using Windows and yes, I don't want to go back to Windows no matter what.
My Hardware:In my signature, you can see some of my hardware but I'll list them here:MB - GigabyteIntel P4 @3.00GHz2GB RAM500 SATA HDDLAN - Built inWireless Adapter - D-LinkADSL Router - CableWireless (the brand name)Laptops - Not mine but will be connected to the serverMy current PC has 9 OS's installed (Multi-Boot System). Other laptops have Windows and I'm planning to use Linux on one of them which is PII with 64MB RAM and 4GB HDD.y Questions: Again, this is my first time so 1- Do I have to remove all the other 9 OS's and keep that PC solely for Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit Server? or it's OK to keep them? If yes, then shall I be able to boot into Ubuntu 10.04 Server after choosing it from GRUB2 Menu?
2- I read about Server Types but as mentioned above, my usages are limited and I don't need Web Server, Mail Server, etc. So, do I really need a Server (Ubuntu 10.04) OS to do that? or Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition is up to this job?3- I guess this should be the first Question. Do I need any particular skills to deal with Servers? or just general knowledge will be enough?I believe in one thing. No matter how much you read about something and learn, the real experience or the practical experience is something else. When you do something by yourself, you will never forget it.
4- Probably this is same as Question #2. I'm very bad in CLI I know very few commands only and I know that GUI is disabled in Servers OS. How hard that could be for someone like me? I read a reply by a friend of mine (HermanAB) at one of the threads here. He said if someone wants to use GUI on a Server then it's better to use the Desktop Edition. Thing is, I'm very interested to try and use a server but as I mentioned, I'm very weak in CLI.5- If Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition could offer all the tasks I want (listed above) so what exactly do I need to know/learn?

I have two laptops with Ubuntu 9.10
I want to connect them with a wireless router. phillips snb5600 router.
So I can go online and share files with both laptops
My LG E500 laptop to function as a modem with a connection to the internet with a 3g usb modem.
There are built-in wireless LG E500.
My other laptop is an old webtech without wireless built in, but I have a wireless USB thing fully with snb5600 Router. Ubuntu can find the wireless USB thing. so it's not a problem.
Both laptops can also connect with the router with cable.

I'm experiencing slow speed transfer between two wireless connected laptops running ubuntu 9.10. Using SSH to tranfer files between these two laptops, which connect to the internet via a wirelesss router, with good speed. This is why I'm surprised by this low speed : 52.3 KB/s, averaging 3 hours and 31 minutes for a 700 Mb movie. Is there any way to make this faster ?

I'm looking for some independent solutions: Uses PPP or SLIP or PLIP or BlueTooth or Firewire or Makes one laptop appear as a "USB drive" to the other Both laptops are enet & wifi equipped and might be on the same LANWe could use a geek stick or similar flash drive device but that is so un-cool with less that zero shazaam. In similar un-cool fashion, we could interact with some server out on the net somewhere.Firewire point-to-point or USB point-to-point would be interesting.Ethernet (100baseT) point-to-point could be easy. We all carry a short drop cable and would need a crossover-block for RJ45 for direct connection of two machines. Some net setup and away we go.
If both laptops are on the same coffee-house LAN using either wifi or enet, a few lines of script might (1) announce current IP and wait for connection, and (2) accept a client IP and connect. If this connection was a tunnel of some sort, we are off to the races. As always, Mr. Phelps, if either you or any of your Tux Force know of an off the shelf solution, I'll beg forgiveness and gladly sing your praises every chance that I get.

I and my friend use FC10 on our laptops. We want to share our data by creating a wired network between our machines because a wireless router is something what our pockets can't afford. What should I do for it? What type of wires and stuffs do I need? I Googled for some link for doing so in FC10 but couldn't find.

The fallacy in moving from desktops using PCI (etc) devices which have a history of available wireless and/or wired drivers is simply that one reaches a level of technology in modern laptops wherein drivers used by the devices in those laptops running Win7 are simply difficult to find for Linux OSs.
I purchased a Toshiba L500 (64 bit) which ran Win7 Home Premium; I wiped the HD and installed Windows 32 bit Pro. Runs like a top. Even after I installed Win 7 Pro, I had to search back on the Toshiba site for the wireless and Lan drivers to reinstall. I then installed Fedora 13 which gives me use of Win7 but also Fedora; However, does anyone know where there is a copy of an rpm driver (or for that matter a deb driver) for the following; 1. Atheros AR8152 PCI-E Fast ethernet controller and, 2. the Realtek RTL8191SE Wireless Lan 802.11n PCI-E NIC?
Obviously, without the availability of online status for Linux on Laptops, Linux becomes a useless paperweight and I have a very fast new Win7 Pro machine.

Bought a couple new cards to do some bitcoin mining (just an experiment) and before I hook them up I want to know how to use p2pool. im not that good with ports and was wondering how to correctly configure it. I keep getting Bitcoin is downloading blocks errors.
Edit: Im also getting a low mhash rate of 1.5. Is this correct for a geforce 9400m? Im not too worried about it after I use these new cards. and is there a difference in using laptops vs a pci slot desktop video card?

Its an absolute failure for me. No matter how i try, i cannot see my samba-shared folders in a Fedora machine from another Fedora machine. Both has FC15 installed, networked through WiFi. Tried everything from this forum, (install samba, start samba service, configure samba) but cannot see my shared folder. In Windows it works fine (I can see my WIndows shares from a Fedora laptop, but i cannot see my Fedora shares from a Feroda laptop. Why it is always so difficult to have a simple facility in Linux?

I've installed F13 on two Dell E6400 laptops, both with Broadcom BCM4312 wireless cards. After updating them both, I enabled the RPMFusion repos and installed the akmod-ed wireless driver on each (following these instructions: [URL] Wireless works perfectly on one laptop, but doesn't seem to be working on the other. The wl module is activated (shows up in lsmod) and the wireless card is enabled (wlan0 shows up in ifconfig), but Network Manager isn't showing any available networks. For the record, wireless works on both laptops with Ubuntu 9.10 I am going to try cloning the entire drive on the working laptop and sticking it on the dud one.

I have installed 10.04 on several machines as well as imbedded inside VISTA. All of these installs work fine except the one on my HP Pavillion dv9000. The synaptics device on these machines is very touchy in all operating systems, but caused a strange issue in ubuntu 10.10. While connected to the internet and working fine I barely touched the pad and everything quit. I rebooted and found no way to reconnect to the internet. On the panel there was a little icon about the connection manager. Hovering over this icon gave the message "Connection Manager daemon not working". The usual tab to "enable networking" was dim and could not be activated.
I searched for several hours and found no reference regarding this daemon. Is there a source of the op sys names for such daemons and what sort of terminal command would I use to restart it if I knew what it was called? I ended up scrubbing the partition and reinstalling. Even the recovery process would not get the daemon to restart.

last friday my schools isp enabled iwsva - interscan web security virtual appliance from trendmicro. all traffic is now filtered, and slowed down. videos and other videostreams are now useless. after this we have had serious problems using our netbooks with ubuntu, and upgrading workstations with ubuntu has become very problematic, or almost impossible. i have to run the update process 6-8 times before all packages are updated.
what can i do to document the problem in a good way. the isp tells me that there are no problems, and that it has to be a linux problem. (ever heard that one before?) the ltsp-clients on my debian servers does not have the same problems, maybe because they are using the proxy on this server?

I actually have two problems (which may be related). I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a old Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo La1703 and Windows 7 on a new Dell Inspiron 1545. I only have one broadband internet dongle, so I would like to share the connection (preferably via wireless ad hoc connection, but lan would work too). The dongle is run with a program that comes with it and works fine in both Windows and Ubuntu (except that the Network Manager in Ubuntu doesn't realise that there is an internet connection).
Yesterday morning I managed ONCE to make a wireless ad hoc connection and was able to use the dongle connected on the Windows machine from the Ubuntu one (using WEP security). Since I wasn't able to reproduce this I tried with a Ethernet cable. I plugged it in and and was surfing smoothly the whole evening.
This morning I couldn't connect the computers any more. Neither with nor without cable. When the cable is plugged in the Ubuntu machine recognises a connection, but fails to connect. The windows machine just says "Unidentified Network". I don't know what I did to make the connection disappear or why my laptops refuse to communicate like friends any more. I've been trying the whole day to make them kiss and make up, but they are really stubborn.

I am trying to setup a dhcp server for my internal network. I have two NICs, a modem, and a wireless router. I have my server connected directly to my modem which is providing me with Internet access on eth1 and is working fine. I have dhcp and dns setup on eth0 which is connected to my router. The router shows that it is connected to the Internet but when the router gives a client computer an IP address, the client is unable to connect to the Internet but can connect to the router. I will post my configuration files below with my current configuration.

I had put my computer on standby and when i restarted it, it powered off within a few seconds. I turned it back on and after that i've lost connectivity to internet on Ubuntu 10.04.
However I have VMware (XP) installed and internet/network works on that. I'm a newbie with Linux.
Here are some outputs:
I have tried to edit the connection using System>Preferences>Network Connections. I entered manual settings for IPV4, but whatever i enter there, it doesnt get reflected when i type ifconfig in the terminal window. I tried setting it to Automatic DHCP as well. Doesnt work.
