Ubuntu :: Copying Files From A Hard Drive Using Another Computer?

Aug 4, 2010

I got a problem with the motherboard of my computer and now I need to get some files out from the hard drive (an ext3 partition). I can access the files from another computer but because of the permissions of my user it doesn't let me copy the files over to another drive.

my computer was running Kubuntu 8.10 with a Vista dualboot. I also tried attaching the hard drive to another laptop, but because of the video drivers the display doesn't function properly.

host B: Fedora 11 has bind 9.6.1

I want to migrate my bind configuration from A to B I've read the release notes and man pages and I can't see why copying

/etc/named*
and
/var/named/*

I checked /etc/sysconfig/named too... Seems to have no effect on my brand new install on Fedora 11. Host B stays basically un-configured.

Fedora :: Copying All Of .wine To Another Computer?

Jan 12, 2011

I've lost some install disks which cannot be replaced and need to copy my entire /home/username/.wine to my laptop.

I already have installed wine on the laptop and it is the same version of Fedora (14) as is on my desktop.

Is it possible to mass copy the entire desktop /home/username/.wine, and copy it onto the laptop?

Do I do the copy as user or as root? I need to get everything, the system files registery and ProgramFiles etc. and then copy it on to the lap top with exactly the same permissions.

So I would, for example, type tar -zvcp allWine.tgz /home/username/.wine/*.*

Networking :: Copying Files Over A Network

Jan 8, 2010

While copying a large amount of data between two linux computers I noticed strange behaviour. The network card activity (computer copying the files) would be dormant for 30 second to a minute and then flash rapidly for just 5 second or so. This repeated for the duration of the copying progress (approx 2 hours at a supposedly constant 5-7MB/s).

The share that I was copying to was via SSH using "connect to server" from the GNOME menu. I was expecting the see the network card activity light constantly flash. I wondered if someone could explain this strange behaviour that I have witnessed.

Ubuntu Networking :: Copying Thunderbird Files To Another Machine?

Apr 13, 2010

Copying my Thunderbird files to another machine

Two questions:

1. Can I copy xx.default to DVD, its 1.5GB in size, and then merge it into the xx.default of the other machine or try and connect through a crossover cable. I tried to copy onto a flash drive but it did not recognize Inbox.sbd as a folder.

2. How do I manager the existing files in the receiving machine, it has an existing mail account.

Ubuntu Networking :: Backup Software Not Copying Files?

Apr 17, 2010

Having trouble running backup software to network storage. (Ubuntu 10.04 Beta)

I mounted my network drive (a Netgear Stora) with curlftps (tried several other ways, but this is the only way that works). It shows up like a regular HDD which I can copy files to in the file manager, but when I try running backup software only the folders are copied.

I've tried several backup programs, some based on Rsync, as well as Rsync itself, but they all had problems. Dj Dup kind of worked and was able to copy files (archives), but kept dropping the ethernet connection instead.

Fedora :: Rsync Not Copying All Files?

Sep 9, 2011

My Source folder contains 424.8 GB in 502,474 files. My Destination folder was created fresh, and after the copy contains 394.0 GB in 486.514 files. I am running it as grsync with root authority. The only options are to preserve time, permissions, owner and group., and to produce a verose output and transfer progress. There are no exceptions specified to skip any files.

The rsync command is this:

rsync -r -t -p -o -g -v --progress -c -l -H -D -s /mnt/Backups/monthly.3/ /mnt/EX-Fantom/monthly.3/

I have run it again to give it a chance to get it right. Same result. The source is in an rsnapshot folder, but this is the first backup, the original, containing only whole files, not links.

Networking :: Bizarre - Copying Files To An NFS Share On The Microserver Is Very Slow

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on my workstation and have Ubuntu Server 10.10 installed on a HP Proliant MicroServer. A NFS share is configured on the MicroServer and successfully mounts from workstation PC/ Ubuntu 10.10 The issues: Copying files to an NFS share on the microserver is very, very slow. Whilst files copied to the NFS share are visible to the workstation, they don't appear when using 'ls' on the server. despite the folder owner/ user account on the Microserver and the workstation having the same name and sharing the same UID & GID (1000), copies made from the workstation have a different UID & GID

Fedora :: Input/output Error When Copying Files To Fedora Live CD?

Dec 21, 2010

I booted my Fedora 13 live CD on my Dell server, and configured networking and SSHd. On my desktop I logged into the live cd and started copying over a big file (1.5 GB) (i.e. copying from the desktop computer to the server). After copying about half the fil, the download fails with an error message about the filesystem being read-only.I've seen this exact same behavior on both i386 and x86_64 of the same live CD, but don't know why it's happening. I've also had the same issue when copying small files. In /var/log/messages these messages are repeated many times:

Fedora :: Copying Files Between Sata (fedora 13) And Ide (windows)?

Dec 30, 2010

I currently have three hard drives: (2) 150GB IDE drives (windows) and (1) 500GB SATA drive (fedora13). I'm trying to move files on the IDE drives to the SATA drive so that I only need the SATA drive. The SATA drive is running Fedora 13 and the other two were old NTFS drives that I just use for space now. So most of the files copied fine, however, for a handful of them I receive the following error:Error splicing file: Value too large for defined data type This happens when I try to copy files not only from drive to drive, but even from folder to folder on the same drive. I've read about a 2GB file size limit, but none of the files are that size. I have no idea why this is happening.

Fedora Hardware :: Low Transfer Rate When Copying Large Files Over Wireless

Jan 11, 2010

I just bought a HP 3085dx laptop with an intel 5100 agn wireless card.
The problem: copying a big file over the wireless to a gigabit hardwired to the router computer only gives an average 3.5MB/Second transfer rate. If I do the same copy from my wireless-n macbook pro to the same computer. I get a transfer rate of about 11MB/sec. Why the big difference? I noticed the HP always connects to the 2.4 GHZ band instead of the 5GHZ bands...

On the HPL
[jerry@bigbox ~]$ ifconfig wlan0

I am not getting any errors. I don't know why the bit rate is not known. My airport extreme base station typically reports that the 'rate' for the hp is typically 250~300MBi and about the same for the MacBook Pro. The hp is about 6 inchs away from the base station. Is there anyway to get the rascal to go mo'faster? Is there anyway to get the rascal to use the 5GHZ band.

Ubuntu Installation :: Copying Repositories From A Computer To Another?

Feb 12, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu Maverick

On my university, the technology center uses the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I've been told by my teacher to get GCC for the C language. Searching for GCC on my netbook, I can find two programs: Sysinfo (why?) GGcov (doesn't open) Searching for GCC on the TC Computer, I can find 115 programs... The administrator wasn't there at the moment I checked this, and he'll not be there on this weekend so... I would like to do this by myself tomorrow. With my vast one-week experience with ubuntu, I think such software abundance from the TC computer side is related to repositories. I would like to copy them all to my netbook, if it's possible.

OpenSUSE :: Dolphin Losing Files When Copying Many Files Or Large Folders?

Feb 14, 2010

I've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.

I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.

Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.

It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.

Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.

The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.

General :: Copying A File As Root Through An Intermediate Computer?

Jul 23, 2010

I am trying to copy four files from my machine, through a second machine, and finally to the destination. The destination computer can only be reached through the second computer, and I am curious to know if there is an easy way to do this. I am able to ssh to the middle machine and then ssh from there to the destination. I know that I could just copy from the first machine to the second, and then from there to the third. I guess that I'm curious to know what kind of command I can run to do this all at once or even if I could do such a thing (which I'm betting I can). I need to copy these files as root on the destination machine too.

Networking :: Copying Files With Scp - From A Network To Another Network

May 5, 2011

I have a debian box, a.ces.school.edu, in my lab and my laptop also runs debian (on another DHCP lan home network outside school). I can access my lab's debian computer from outside school only by first ssh-ing to a server setup by the school - access.ces.school.edu, and then, from the server ssh-ing to my lab computer. That works fine and I can view all my files on my lab computer from home.

But, I would like to copy some files from my lab computer to my home computer. With scp, I know how to do that if I could connect directly with my school computer. In the present scenario, I can't figure out how to copy files.

Does anyone know how this can be done?
