Copying my Thunderbird files to another machine
Two questions:
1. Can I copy xx.default to DVD, its 1.5GB in size, and then merge it into the xx.default of the other machine or try and connect through a crossover cable. I tried to copy onto a flash drive but it did not recognize Inbox.sbd as a folder.
2. How do I manager the existing files in the receiving machine, it has an existing mail account.
I have a tarball of my old .thunderbird directory that I untarred onto my new machine. When I open Thunderbird, it wants me to go through the setup process. I've copied these files before and was able to get into my email.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhile copying a large amount of data between two linux computers I noticed strange behaviour. The network card activity (computer copying the files) would be dormant for 30 second to a minute and then flash rapidly for just 5 second or so. This repeated for the duration of the copying progress (approx 2 hours at a supposedly constant 5-7MB/s).
The share that I was copying to was via SSH using "connect to server" from the GNOME menu. I was expecting the see the network card activity light constantly flash. I wondered if someone could explain this strange behaviour that I have witnessed.
Having trouble running backup software to network storage. (Ubuntu 10.04 Beta)
I mounted my network drive (a Netgear Stora) with curlftps (tried several other ways, but this is the only way that works). It shows up like a regular HDD which I can copy files to in the file manager, but when I try running backup software only the folders are copied.
I've tried several backup programs, some based on Rsync, as well as Rsync itself, but they all had problems. Dj Dup kind of worked and was able to copy files (archives), but kept dropping the ethernet connection instead.
I have a saved a .c file on my department computer and i am able to access it through my computer via SSH. BUT I WANT TO copy and paste it into my system.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on my workstation and have Ubuntu Server 10.10 installed on a HP Proliant MicroServer. A NFS share is configured on the MicroServer and successfully mounts from workstation PC/ Ubuntu 10.10 The issues: Copying files to an NFS share on the microserver is very, very slow. Whilst files copied to the NFS share are visible to the workstation, they don't appear when using 'ls' on the server. despite the folder owner/ user account on the Microserver and the workstation having the same name and sharing the same UID & GID (1000), copies made from the workstation have a different UID & GID

I have iomega appliance, which is based on Debian distribution. There is an NFS share that I have created which is without password.Since it is without password, there are some viruses copied. I want to find out which IP address is the source of these files. In other words, I want to know which PC is copying these infected files on the NFS share.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm doing a school project for my masters and ran out of time setting up the system. Unfortunately, I can't easily use the removable hard drive I had at school. The school does permit students to buy a portable hard drive and use VMware player to run virtual machines, at the student expense if they want to be able to work at home, vs the hard drive they provide as part of the tuition. I'm planning to borrow one for this.
If I can get the DNS server and DHCP server running with vmware, how easy would it be to either copy the conf files for dhcpd and bind from the portable drive to the removable drive (looks just like a regular SATA drive once it's in the machine) via a flash drive or e-mail? Alternately, move the configuration files for CUPS, SSH server, and NFS including the part about excluding Root for NFS and SSH to the virtual machine?
Which do you guys think would be easier? Also, could somebody list the files I'd need to move the configuration for Fedora 12 for the situation I described just to help me double check that I got everything? Assume everything else is what is preinstalled off the DVD for Fedora 12, although I did yum install all those services and when possible the system-config utils.
I have set up a new machine with Lucid and installed Thunderbird 3.0.4. I want to move the mail account etc from the old machine to the new. I understand that I have to copy the 'thunderbird' folder in 'home' to the new machine. However, if I don't create a mail account profile in the new machine, this folder doesn't show up.
I don't want to end up with duplicate inbox folders when I copy over the old profile.
What's the correct way to do this? When I have done it before, I always seem to end up with multiple (empty folders)
I have a Posh new 64bit Ubuntu computer with one of the latest distro's on it,works loverly.this is in my front room.In my beroom I have an older box with Xbutu 10.10 installed which I want to use to play movies into my telly that are stored on the ubuntu box which is connected to the same sky router.I tried ubuntu before xbuntu to achieve this ,which worked with "connect to server",but the bedroom machine doesnt have the Ooomph to play movies without clipping the video part.I was hoping Xbuntu would free up enough resources to enable the playing of movies, and it is indead more suitable,but I cant work out how to connect to the files on the ubuntu machine.

/var/named/*
I checked /etc/sysconfig/named too... Seems to have no effect on my brand new install on Fedora 11. Host B stays basically un-configured.
I've discovered that Dolphin seems to lose random files when copying many large folders.
I first noticed this a few months ago when I tried to copy my music library from one folder to another on the same HDD. It consisted of around 600 folders and 6500 files. During the copy there were no errors but after the copy I found that some of the newly copied folders were missing files. I put it down to human error or a glitch.
Yesterday I tried to copy 13 folders containing rips of some of my DVDs. Each folder basically had one film of either 700MB or 1.4GB. Again no errors showed up during the copy but I found 3 of the newly copied folders were empty.
It's not so critical with music or films but I can't afford to lose work data like this.
Has anyone experienced or seen a similar problem with Dolphin? I'm going to have to do some more extensive testing but this is not good.
The first time I noticed the problem I was running KDE4.3.4 (I think) and now the latest was with KDE4.4.0.
I use AOL for my mail i cant use a terminal mail client mutt etc, If I let thunderbird download mail to my home server (pc in corner) is it possible to collect the mail from there with mutt etc AND Thunderbird on another machine. Summary download aol with thunderbird to server then collect it later with other laptops / email clients

When I try to open any nfs-mounted file using OpenOffice, I get a pop-up window titled "Document in Use". The text of the message is:
"Document file 'abcde.odt' is locked for editing by:
Unknown User
Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing." I then have three options - <Open Read-Only>, <Open Copy>, & <Cancel> If I cp any of these files from the mounted directory to my home dir (not mounted), I can open them without problem.Also, my firefox & thunderbird date are in this mounted directory as well (sym links to ~dan/.mozilla & ~dan/.thunderbird). Both of these apps hang when trying to open, leaving two processes behind that need to be manually killed. Again, cp'ing the data out of the nfs-mounted dir onto a local dir resolves the issue, so I am 100% confident there is nothing missing or corrupted in the firefox &/or thunderbird data...

I am trying to see share files on my windows machine to my linux machine. I would like an answer to how to fix the problem. This is where i am at i am using my own network to learn who to use nmap properly. I ping my whole network with nmap -sS -O. Then i used nmblookup -a which gave me the infromation i needed. Then i run smbclient -L computername -I ip address -N
This will not show me the windows os this only show me my laptop. What can i change for this to show me the other computer on this network. The port i am wanting is open. I have a debian box, a.ces.school.edu, in my lab and my laptop also runs debian (on another DHCP lan home network outside school). I can access my lab's debian computer from outside school only by first ssh-ing to a server setup by the school - access.ces.school.edu, and then, from the server ssh-ing to my lab computer. That works fine and I can view all my files on my lab computer from home.
But, I would like to copy some files from my lab computer to my home computer. With scp, I know how to do that if I could connect directly with my school computer. In the present scenario, I can't figure out how to copy files.
Does anyone know how this can be done?
I have been trying to SCP a couple files from my Ubuntu 10.10 machine to a Fedora 12 machine. Before today, did it with out any problems, always worked. Today however; after the SCP is complete from my machine, the file on the other machine is zero bytes, an empty file. The only thing I can remember getting changed was the new kernel that was in the update I did today. But I don't think that would have changed the SCP works.

Is there some way that I could access her computer and just copy files to mine?
(I picture two folders, one on hers, one on mine, and I just dragging an icon from one to the other - but I don't suppose anything's THAT easy...)
Naturally, her computer would have to be on, and I assume she could not be using it herself. Naturally also, I would get her permission first...
I assume that it would take a while, but if it were as simple as the icon thing I described above, then I could just go away and come back later. I assume something would be running to make sure that the destination file and source file were identical before proceeding to the next file.
[Before you suggest: why doesn't she just copy the files to DVD's and mail them to me? She is not all that computer saavy, I'm afraid, and trying to explain it all, including the exact folder names and such, Plus, how to use a DVD/CD burner and software... View 5 Replies View RelatedI need to copy ~300GB of drives from one Windows hard drive to another using a Ubuntu live CD. (I currently don't have enough power connectors for my Windows system drive AND both existing and new data drives. Stupid power supply.)
By Windows drive, I mean the drives are only data drive (no Windows install) but the files on the first drive were created and are used by my Windows system, both were formatted NTFS in Windows, and the files will again be used by Windows on the second drive.
Are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of, or can I literally just drag the files across in Nautilus? Is there a faster copy utility available (I know there are Windows programs that can copy faster than drag-n-drop, but I'm sure Ubu doesn't have the same problem ) Will using a Live CD cause any specific issues?
