View 4 RepliesI am using Fedora 13 and have an intermittent problem with the printer(HP d2540). Periodically, the printer will not finish a print job or the software leaves some form of command that interferes with the subsequent jobs. I haven't had much luck finding the print queue. Typically, the print jobs are coming out of the OpenOffice word processing segment and I am not sure whether there is an actual problem or simply a page formatting error.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHow can I make iptables allow my windows client to see my PC / smb shares? When I turn off the fedora firewall it just works fine, but how can I manage smb in a more secure way via iptables to work?
Code:
iptables -A INPUT -s 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 -j ACCEPT
But where do I get the correct address from? Will this example allow only 192.168.0.0 (is this a valid IP at all, usable by any PC? ) or anyone in the network (aka 192.168.0.*) to access my share?
I try to use fedora 11 as my home server. The server should be remotely managed by VNC. A normal VNC-setup does not allow to log into the login screen, but that is what I need !!
Notice that I would like to maintain the sever using the normal gnome gui. I have been investigating lots of options to get VNC running this way, have been searching all over, but did not find any working solution. All solutions I found where based on XVNC which is not available for fedora 11 as far as I know.
I'm using Fedora 14 with gnome as my GUI.As you know , there's gui tool which manages network adapter , either wireless or wired. After every login into fedora , I should click on network manager icon on taskbar and choose System eth0 to establish and enable eth0. I want it to be done automatically.
Previously , I used opensuse 11.4.It has a tool in yast which allows you to choose how to configure your network adapters , traditional or knetworkmanager mode.I can't find this like tool in gnome on fedora.
how I can configure network adapters to start or not during startup?
I have been troubleshooting for some time but do not manage to get my sound working on FC15. I want to use the integrated sound from my motherboard ASRock 890GX Extreme3 and I am testing it with the headphones on the front output. I noticed I can get sound from the motherboard output on the back (front audio should be wired as well though, it does work in Windows). My ALSA information can be found at: [URL]

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got myself into some trouble this afternoon when I thought I would give xmonad a try on my HP mini 210 that runs f14 lxde spin. so, after installing xmonad and dmenu and playig around a bit I found out that my wifi doesn't work. I tried ifup but I get the 'usage: .." response which I have read means that the programm can't find a configuration file for the device (and I am pretty sure that some programm was managing these files for me up until now).
I have tried to run system-config-network, which defaults to the tui version for some reason, I guess at this point that the normal gui is based on the gnome backend or something? Anyway, the terminal version just outputs a bunch of info about the devices that exist on the system (eth1 the broadcom wifi device is also listed) and then exits.
Anyway, in the normal lxde desktop you could use the gnome network manager, I guess this is not the case when running xmonad. So how do I do this? Links to documentation are welcomed. EDIT: some info about how I get to xmonad, the machine uses the standard LXDM login and from there I just select the xnomad window manger before logging in. I mean I am not trying to use it on top of anything else (eg. xmonad/gnome or xmonad/lxde etc.)
im using fedora 10 with gnome on a laptop, i want to increase power to my wifi adapter as im only getting 40% connection strength to the nearest wifi AP (about 20 feet) in windows under power management there is a slider with best performance against battery life, is there a similar setup in fedora 10? ps, if explained fairly well, i dont mind shell scripting (bash) and compiling.

I have an Intel Board (see signature). I am running intel raid software under W7 currently. It works fine. Do I need to get rid of the intel raid software and use a Fedor/Linux raid program to manage the raid array??
The workstation is running FC14.
I have the audio out of the media machine passed into the line in on my workstation. It's just handly to have the audio pass in this way so that i can manage the volume or headphones or whatever from one machine.
This worked, and worked well, for a very long time. I recently reinstalled the workstion, FC14 still. After the reinstall, my passthrough doesn't work.
If i start up some media on the media machine, and then open up the volume control on the workstation, i can see the volume meter moving along with the audio, but nothing plays out of my speakers.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI will try to explain. My bank send to me a file which has extension .fm6, but which is, in reality, a zipped file. I have a program, which runs more or less well under wine, to open them.
Now the problem is: how can I associate this kind of files to the application? I mean, I can change the application for *all* compressed zip files, I know how to do it, but I do not want it. Just zip files that happens to have a name ending in .fm6 should be associated with them.
I know it's possible. In the end, openoffice.org files are really zip files (try it), and they are treated differently.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for an effective way to manage use of internet bandwidth by users on a local area network. Currently there is a simple broadband router and unmanaged switch, and a standalone Ubuntu Server (8.04) that provides DHCP, DNS and mail for the LAN, and a web server. Ports are forwarded from a static external IP address to HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, SSH and IMAPS, and some security is provided by IP Tables (managed by using UFW).
There are 5 users on the network, and currently one or two of those 5 are using beyond our monthly download allowance of 30Gb. 1) To be aware of how many users are currently using the internet connection, and to divide the bandwidth between that number (so that if there are, say, 3 active connections, the total bandwidth available is divided 3 ways, rather than one of those users being able to hog all of it).
2) To allow each user to download up to 1/5 of 30Gb each month without any additional throttling (apart from the above), but once they go over that allowance to throttle them individually to, say, 10Kbps until the start of the new month.
I've heard other threads talking about both IP Tables and a proxy server such as Squid. I have no idea which of these would be most suited to the task. Currently, as I said, the Ubuntu server is standalone and only using 1 NIC, but it has 2 NICs and I could be configured to act as a gateway for the LAN, instead of the router, which is set to be the current default gateway.

I'm trying to compile ASC (Advanced Strategic Command). Why compile it? To gain experience and for fun.I'm running slackware 13.1.So I do ./configure, & then it says that it needs LUA 5.1. So I get LUA, do make linux & then make install, and the LUA program is there (I can run it), as well as an empty directory called /usr/local/lib/lua/5.1. But ASC still says the same thing as before:
ASC requires the LUA 5.1 library.ou have a distribution supplied LUA 5.1 package installed, perhaps the LUA 5.1-devel package is missing. If your distribution does not include the LUA 5.1 library, you can get it from Thinking that the problem might be because a library was required, I followed some links on the lua site, ile called lua5_1_4_linux26_lib.tar.gz. I moved the files from the tar to the empty directory. Still no luck.
