View 1 Replies View RelatedSo i have a fresh install of the server edition of Karmic, i'm running the Xfce desktop. When I attempt to manage users and groups through the GUI, I am prompted for what I think is the root password, the reason I say this is because the account I am currently logged in has sudo privileges and it does not accept that password at all, but I read that by default the root account is 'locked,' (to be honest it was so long ago since I last installed Ubuntu I completely forgot if it is or isn't, my current desktop installation has su access) is it asking for the root password? why doesn't my current user account password work if the root account is 'locked'? I can perform all other administrative tasks with sudo no problem.
the funny thing is, I have the exact same setup in a virtual machine, the same problem happens, except for some strange reason after changing the password on the only account (besides root), the password required to administer users and groups stayed the same after the change. (at the time of installation I just put both the user and root password the same and now that it is setup), i'm now ready to change the passwords. except now I read that the root account is locked by default, but this strange problem occurs.
Trying to setup a Kerberos + OpenLDAP server to manage users for our Samba shares (was going to use just OpenLDAP, but apparently it is less secure than using Kerberos with it). (Distro: CentOS 5.5) Haven't even gotten to the point of connecting either to Samba yet. I have set up a Kerberos server, and configured it as necessary. I am happy that it is working as intended, as I can login and manage principals from both the local terminal and remotely on other clients.
I have setup a server (sv1.myhost.net), and configured it to talk to Kerberos (auth.myhost.net). I have created both a [URL] principal, and a testuser principal. I have set the password on the testuser but not on the host/sv1.myhost.net. I have added the keys for both users to the keytab file on the sv1.myhost.net. I am at a Windows 7 machine (on the same internal network), and have installed the Network Identity Manager. It is able to request a ticket successfully for the testuser account.
When I use putty w/GSSAPI (0.58) to remote login to the system, it says using 'testuser' and then just hangs there. Eventually putty connection times out. The fact that both machines can connect to the auth server to communicate with kerberos correctly suggests firewalls are correct. The relevant entries in sshd_config have been uncommented to tell srv1 to use Kerberos authentication.
My user/group manager in the system>administration menu is missing.Is there a command to get to the user/group manage using alt+f2 in the desktop? Or can i download the user/group manager from Ubuntu Software Center? I searched the Software Center and all i could find was the KUser user manager program... can I download it? Will it work with ubuntu 10.04?

By setting up dovecot to use mysql, i can query username and password for authentication but how do i create a user and edit its information in the database? Poastfixadmin only use database that was created along when installing it.
Any viable option aside from recode postfix to meet my criteria?
So if I get their public key for ssh how do I add and then how do I delete it my problem is in .ssh/authorized_keys file I do not understand how to add and how to delete the key so that I can enable and disable root login this way.I am not sure as how do I comment the key assuming that the person sends me his public key then in .ssh/authorized_keysfile how do I add so that a comment can also be added so that I can identify that person as a legitimate user.

I read it and found some e-mails that had failed to send because I don't have mail setup (luckily). The e-mails were trying to send my user name and password to the e-mail address lostsoul2k@ymail.comI've no idea where to start, I use SSH, FTP now and then and it hosts a Wordpress site. The FTP users do not have access via SSH, only my user ID. But sometimes users login into applications servers and started doing all their developer's job. i want to allow only a limited number of users tointo this application users not all the users who are all part of the nis domain.all the systems are running RHEL 5.4 on hp's proliant x86_64 based servers. Please advice me how should i proceed? enabling ip tables is not possible in my environment.

But when logged in with my "mythtv" user account, all I get is a blank screen, but the audio works. I suspected a permissions issue and thought maybe I should add mythtv to the video group? Something to try. But when I go to System > Administration > Users and Groups, I don't have a mythtv user listed. The user does exist, I log in with it. Also, I have: mythtv:x:113:121::/var/lib/mythtv:/bin/sh in /etc/passwd I just don't know where to begin looking for this, since it is working for other users, just not the one I need it to.

I am trying to come up with an effective means of monitoring the user account. So far I have a script that runs the finger command, and emails me once an hour. Is there something else that I can do to keep a close eye on the account?
I am using Fedora 13 and have an intermittent problem with the printer(HP d2540). Periodically, the printer will not finish a print job or the software leaves some form of command that interferes with the subsequent jobs. I haven't had much luck finding the print queue. Typically, the print jobs are coming out of the OpenOffice word processing segment and I am not sure whether there is an actual problem or simply a page formatting error.

When I run top I see 3 users indicated - which worries me somewhat... I am the only user on this machine.
I come from a Debian / Ubuntu /Gentoo knowledge-base and this laptop is a fresh install, encrypted partitions, temp has own partition (encrypted too) and obviously the firewall is on, with ssh service turned off and ssh access removed in the firewall....
is this 3 users in top normal, or have i managed to be hacked in the 3 - 4 days since I started the install ? In all this time I have been sitting behind a router when on the net.
Am I looking at a fresh install, or are there valid reasons for the extra users?
I just ran "users" in terminal and I show up 3 times - I have only logged in once, through the GUI and no extra access routes
I have an external USB drive that is NTFS. It mounts fine under my account and my wife's, but only if I fully shut-down the computer between switching. While switching users or logging out then in with a different account it will not mount the drive. I am not sure what to do... but we both access data from the same drive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.04.2 (Linux 2.6.32-33-server on x86_64) with OpenLDAP 2.4.21 and Webmin1.550. I converted my ldap database from another system with the older style schema (OpenLDAP 2.3.3 with slightly older Webmin version 1.480) and no longer use slapd.conf, but the newer slapd.d format.
It all works fine except for one thing. When I add a new user, it lets me type in the additional LDAP fields:
But when I click the Create button, all the fields get jumbled together in the Title/Position box with a diamond question mark delimiting the fields:
Modifying existing users (which have the Additional fields displaying correctly) also has the same result - it moves the fields all into the one Title/Position box with the diamond shapes with question marks inside between each entry. Is it a problem with my schema files? I tried reverting to the older shema files and slapd.conf and it still did the same thing on the new system. I am really at a loss.

Previously added users that show the fields properly have "description:" and then the field listed for each Additional LDAP field. Also shouldn't the "title" be visible in plain human readable text here? - it looks like it encrypted it somehow - similar to a password hash. The older system works fine and the fields are all readable and in their proper locations. But the new system just doesn't work right.
A Tomcat server is installed under user A. Now I am going to write a script which will start this Tomcat server. And this script can be executed from other users (from there account). And if other user run this script, the process ID should be of user A, so that user A can start or stop this process any time. View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm writing a user ranking module for a site. This ranking depends on some criterias and it's possible to set or unset any one of these criterias in order to consider them in calculating the user rank or not. And here's the way I've implemented the ranking calculation :
when I set one or more of the criterias to be considered in ranking , for each user in the system I insert one record for each criteria , for example : if I have 2 criterias and both are set and consider that I have two users , I'll have :

It means I just set the to_be_added field to 1 for all of them and leave the calculation of score for each criteria for each user to the time the user logins so that to prevent doing all these calculations at once , because there are a huge number of users ... But there is one problem , if I want to show for example the best user (based on the highest score) , the result can't always be true because some users might not logged in at that time and their score might be zero .
Kuser no longer works for 'rob' but still works for 'robert' & 'root'. It launches (i.e. the cursor bounces up & down and a Kuser box appears in the task bar) but the Kuser screen never opens. Finally, the bouncing cursor disappears as well as the Kuser box in the task bar.
