Networking :: Unable To Connect To Wi-Fi Network With Network Manage

Nov 21, 2008

I'm unable to connect to a particular home wireless network under Fedora 9, although I can connect to it using WinXP on the same machine. My Fedora installation is able to connect to my college's unsecured wireless network, so it's not a driver issue I think. It seems to be an authorisation issue, as I'll describe below, but there's one other thing that's bothering me. The SSID for the network I have problems with is for some reason not listed in Network Manager's drop-down list, nor is it in the output of iwlist wlan0 scan. But I'm pretty sure it's not a "hidden" network - I don't know exactly how those work, but I helped the owner of the wifi network in setting it up, and don't remember doing anything that would make it hidden. As far as I can remember, Windows found the network automatically without having to be told the SSID. What's the best way to confirm whether it's a hidden network or not?

Anyway, I try to connect by selecting connect to other wireless network in Network Manager, and entering the SSID. As far as I can tell from the error messages below, the machine does contact the network and attempt to connect, but I'm not authorising myself properly. That may be a completely wrong diagnosis, but hopefully someone can see from the below info whether it's correct or not.I'm not sure which option to use for "Wireless Security": at the time we set up the network, it gave us a Hex WEP key of 26 characters, which is 104 bits. But none of the options in Network Manager's list match that. Here are the options it has, and the error message I get with each one:None - if I select this, it fails to connect, with no error message.
WEP 128-bit passphrase - if I select this and attempt to use my 26-character WEP key, it brings up a new dialog, saying "Passwords or encryption keys are required to access the wireless network [SSID]." It has a drop-down box labelled "Wireless Security", but this time the only option is "None", and the connect button is disabled, I can only click cancel.
WEP 40/128-bit hex - as above.
WEP 40/128-bit ASCII - The connect button is disabled when I try to use the WEP key, as the string is too long. Despite the fact that it says 40/128-bit, it actually accepts 5 and 13-character strings (40 or 104-bit). Since I've got a 104-bit hex key, I tried converting it to ASCII, but it consists of mostly unprintable characters, so I'm not sure there's any way to actually enter it into the textfield. I might have done something wrong here, so I've put my code below to see if anyone can point out a mistake.
LEAP - requires a username, not applicable here I think. Windows doesn't need one, and we don't have one from when we set the network up.Dynamic WEP (802.1x) - requires username, private key and various other things, all N/A WPA & WPA2 Personal - Brings up a dialog with the same text as for "128-bit passphrase", but this time "WPA & WPA2 Personal" is the only option in the drop-down list, instead of "None". It asks for a password, so I just enter the hex key again - now it asks for the password for the Gnome Default Keyring, which I don't think I've ever set up. Don't know if I can go any further with that, but my understanding is that since we were given a WEP key when we set up the network, WPA will be N/A.WPA & WPA2 Enterprise - as Dynamic WEP. N/A.Hopefully that's enough info that someone can help diagnose the problem. Some of the behaviour of Network Manager described above doesn't make sense to me, and I'm wondering if it's buggy.

Fedora Installation :: How To Manage Server Remotely

Sep 22, 2009

I try to use fedora 11 as my home server. The server should be remotely managed by VNC. A normal VNC-setup does not allow to log into the login screen, but that is what I need !!
Notice that I would like to maintain the sever using the normal gnome gui. I have been investigating lots of options to get VNC running this way, have been searching all over, but did not find any working solution. All solutions I found where based on XVNC which is not available for fedora 11 as far as I know.

Fedora Networking :: USB WiFi-N Adapter Disconnects Fc14 64-bit

Nov 27, 2010

After a new fresh-from-DVD install of Fedora 14 64-bit (over top of Fedora 12 64-bit which went over top of Fedora 10 64-bit before that) my Linksys WUSB600N adapter connects at login to my WiFi N router with WPA2 Personal.

That is great, as previously (fc10/12) I had to use the Ralink drivers per ogetbilo's thread on this forum (that thread kept me on the net for many years now). And at some point this even became a pain because sometimes the system would boot and refuse to connect to the wireless (which would hang trying to connect) and then crash to a dump screen on shutdown (bug reported). The fix was hoped to be found in upgrading to F14 and the newer kernels with working native Ralink chip support.

But I still have an issue... the connection stays up for a few minutes then drops. If I disable/re-enable wireless it (at least sometimes) re-connects. But obviously that is not workable. This is a USB adapter and I am not entirely sure that there is not some USB powersave issue going on, but I do not see anywhere to disable system USB power saving either.

Fedora Networking :: Wvdial Does Not Work Anymore In FC14 ( Bug )?

Mar 19, 2011

I already had solved the problem [URL].. but after several yum updates it has appeared again. Within the script "/etc/ppp/ip-up" the sixth parameter isn't provided. But the sixth parameter should be "ppp0" (in this case). The script sets it into the variable $LOGDEVICE and passes it as first parameter to annother script. Successfully I had patched "/etc/ppp/ip-up". I would like to report a bug but I'm not sure if it is a wvdial or a ppp/pppd or a Fedora 14 bug.

Now (after several yum patch updates) my patched /etc/ppp/ip-up doesn't help anymore. The registration at the mobile phone provider seems to be ok but the internet connection isn't initialized.

According the man pages wvdial starts ppp or pppd and one of them seems to call /etc/ppp/ip-up. At which point in the subprocessed scripts (under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/) I didn't find out yet.

Fedora Networking :: How To Manage SMB To Work With Firewall

Mar 25, 2009

How can I make iptables allow my windows client to see my PC / smb shares? When I turn off the fedora firewall it just works fine, but how can I manage smb in a more secure way via iptables to work?
Code:
iptables -A INPUT -s 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 -j ACCEPT
But where do I get the correct address from? Will this example allow only 192.168.0.0 (is this a valid IP at all, usable by any PC? ) or anyone in the network (aka 192.168.0.*) to access my share?

Fedora Networking :: Manage WiFi On LXDE With Xmonad?

Apr 6, 2011

I got myself into some trouble this afternoon when I thought I would give xmonad a try on my HP mini 210 that runs f14 lxde spin. so, after installing xmonad and dmenu and playig around a bit I found out that my wifi doesn't work. I tried ifup but I get the 'usage: .." response which I have read means that the programm can't find a configuration file for the device (and I am pretty sure that some programm was managing these files for me up until now).

I have tried to run system-config-network, which defaults to the tui version for some reason, I guess at this point that the normal gui is based on the gnome backend or something? Anyway, the terminal version just outputs a bunch of info about the devices that exist on the system (eth1 the broadcom wifi device is also listed) and then exits.

Anyway, in the normal lxde desktop you could use the gnome network manager, I guess this is not the case when running xmonad. So how do I do this? Links to documentation are welcomed. EDIT: some info about how I get to xmonad, the machine uses the standard LXDM login and from there I just select the xnomad window manger before logging in. I mean I am not trying to use it on top of anything else (eg. xmonad/gnome or xmonad/lxde etc.)

Fedora Networking :: Setup A LAN With An FC14 Laptop - FC15 PC And A Windows Machine Running XP?

Jun 27, 2011

Trying to set up a LAN with an FC14 laptop, FC15 PC and a Windows machine running XP. I have SAMBA installed on both FC machines, but neither of them can see shares on each other or the XP machine. I can ping between all of them. The Windows machine sees all of the SAMBA shares.

When I attempt to Connect to Server under Places on the FC15 PC, I do not have a Windows share option to choose from as I do on the laptop, suggesting smbclient isn't configured correctly on that machine. SMB, NMB and WINBIND are installed and activated on startup on both FC machines. Although I have the Windows share option on the FC14 laptop, it will only connect with the IP address.

Firewalls and SELinux on both machines are disabled. Here are some configuration details:

rpm -qa | grep samba
samba-3.5.8-68.fc15.1.x86_64
samba-winbind-3.5.8-68.fc15.1.x86_64

Fedora Networking :: DNS Queries - Connect To A Ssh Server ?

Aug 28, 2011

How often are dns queries sent? Assume I want to connect to a ssh server, will I send one dns-query in order to do that or do I send multiple during my connection? What if I request web-pages, do I send a query only when I enter a site or will I send queries every time I visit a new page on that site?

I'm asking since I'm considering getting an account at dyn.com (the standard account for $30/yr) and it comes with 600 000 queries per month (which is way more than I expect to get but knowing exactly what it means is always good).

Ubuntu Servers :: Setting Up Server To Manage Network?

Mar 31, 2010

I have a server on my home network. It's currently running a DNS server (bind9) and an HTTP caching server (squid). What I would like to do is redirect all outgoing port 80 connections to the squid server and also make the server responsible for managing DHCP on the network.

Do I just need to install a DHCP daemon on the server, disable it on the router, then set my server as the default gateway and configure iptables to route all connections like I want? Or is it more complicated than that? Also, would that mean that all communication between two computers on the network will go through the server?

Server :: [OpenSUSE] Nfs _netdev - Manage Nfs Mount Via Fstab

Dec 13, 2010

I'd like to manage a nfs-mount via etc/fstab. The simplest solution (or lets say, I forgot _netdev) went wrong - but in bash I could mount - showing the entry in the fstab is fine. (nfsvers=3, soft). So I added _netdev. I expected from the system, that mount would be called twice in the init scripts: The first without those _netdev (s) and after bringing up the network then mounting all _netdev (s). But it seems, it is not working this way. Is anyone here, who can explain the (may OpenSUSE special) behaviour? I found in [URL] the information that _netdev is especially for nfs - so should work, shouldn't it?
