Anyone use novells ZLM to manage their Linux environment? if not what do you use? (patching, config etc) and how do you like what you use?
I try to use fedora 11 as my home server. The server should be remotely managed by VNC. A normal VNC-setup does not allow to log into the login screen, but that is what I need !!
Notice that I would like to maintain the sever using the normal gnome gui. I have been investigating lots of options to get VNC running this way, have been searching all over, but did not find any working solution. All solutions I found where based on XVNC which is not available for fedora 11 as far as I know.

It's currently running a DNS server (bind9) and an HTTP caching server (squid).What I would like to do is redirect all outgoing port 80 connections to the squid server and also make the server responsible for managing DHCP on the network.
Do I just need to install a DHCP daemon on the server, disable it on the router, then set my server as the default gateway and configure iptables to route all connections like I want? Or is it more complicated than that? Also, would that mean that all communication between two computers on the network will go through the server?

The simplest solution (or lets say, I forgot _netdev) went wrong - but in bash I could mount - showing the entry in the fstab is fine. (nfsvers=3, soft). So I added _netdev. I expected from the system, that mount would be called twice in the init scripts: The first without those _netdev (s) and after bringing up the network then mounting all _netdev (s). But it seems, it is not working this way. Is anyone here, who can explain the (may OpenSUSE special) behaviour? I found in [URL] the information that _netdev is especially for nfs - so should work, shouldn't it?

We have a LAN with mixed Windows workstations win 2000, winxp, vista, win 7, linux servers all in a workgroup. Most applications used on the LAN are windows based, with a growing number of python apps. A friend suggested a Primary Domain Controller would be a better way to manage logins, resources etc. I don't wont to use a Windows based PDC, what would you suggest as a linux based PDC? I have heard about TURNKEY PDC, but it uses Samba 3 and apparently doesn't handle Active Directory in Windows.

I really thought that was more difficult for me to put my site database. But now i can load on server my database with phpmyadmin after a very simply installation. I could not believe. i'm trying to use the database that was used by vpopmail and vqadmin with postfix and dovecot. By setting up dovecot to use mysql, i can query username and password for authentication but how do i create a user and edit its information in the database? Poastfixadmin only use database that was created along when installing it.
Any viable option aside from recode postfix to meet my criteria?
So if I get their public key for ssh how do I add and then how do I delete it my problem is in .ssh/authorized_keys file I do not understand how to add and how to delete the key so that I can enable and disable root login this way.I am not sure as how do I comment the key assuming that the person sends me his public key then in .ssh/authorized_keysfile how do I add so that a comment can also be added so that I can identify that person as a legitimate user.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded the i686 11.2 and right before it seems as though the Live CD is going to load, with the cursor and the black screen present, it takes me straight to 'linux login'. It states that runlevel 5 has been reached, the failed services in runlevel 5 are postfix and the skipped services are nfs if that's of any significance. I have no idea where to start; looking around it looks as though this is a graphics card issue. My laptop has Intel X3100 integrated video. How can I manage to get the LiveCD working?
(Also, if let it sit at the login for a while, it says "usr/sbin/stop_preload: line 4: /usr/bin/killall: Input/Output error)
I made a USB pen bootable w/ubuntu 10.10 booted the OS in bios chose my language then on the next step I chose to install updates and third party applications. When I pressed next I was just loading (loading mouse icon) and it don't seem to finish, I just let the computer trye to get past the loading by waiting for 30 - 50 min but nothing happend.
Also tried reinstalling the OS on the USB w/UNetbootin both 32/64 bit and10.4 version -> no change PS: when shutting the comp. down while in ubuntu testing mode black screen with errors accure (a lot of different numbers - error) this is increadable enoying!

View 9 Replies View RelatedTrying to setup a Kerberos + OpenLDAP server to manage users for our Samba shares (was going to use just OpenLDAP, but apparently it is less secure than using Kerberos with it). (Distro: CentOS 5.5) Haven't even gotten to the point of connecting either to Samba yet. I have set up a Kerberos server, and configured it as necessary. I am happy that it is working as intended, as I can login and manage principals from both the local terminal and remotely on other clients.
I have setup a server (sv1.myhost.net), and configured it to talk to Kerberos (auth.myhost.net). I have created both a [URL] principal, and a testuser principal. I have set the password on the testuser but not on the host/sv1.myhost.net. I have added the keys for both users to the keytab file on the sv1.myhost.net. I am at a Windows 7 machine (on the same internal network), and have installed the Network Identity Manager. It is able to request a ticket successfully for the testuser account.
When I use putty w/GSSAPI (0.58) to remote login to the system, it says using 'testuser' and then just hangs there. Eventually putty connection times out. The fact that both machines can connect to the auth server to communicate with kerberos correctly suggests firewalls are correct. The relevant entries in sshd_config have been uncommented to tell srv1 to use Kerberos authentication.
I can't manage to install Packet Tracer 5 on Lucid 10.04 amd64. I've tried both the binary and the tar.gz with the help provided on the old amd64 forum but it's still tell me that the the package architecture (i386) does not match the system (amd64). Do someone have any idea other than switching to the 32-bits version?

How to best manage partitioning when install programs not from debian repositories?I just discovered that Debian installs applications not from repositories to /opt and /lib. Both directories or folders reside in root (/) partition.Having made my root (/) partition (which is only around 500MB) -- more than sufficient for holding a couple of linux images but NOT good for holding application.What is the best solution for resolving this? It's annoying and worrying that my system always reminds of a close to full capacity root partition.

I have been through a number of attempted fixes via the thread 434687-software-repository-corruption but have not managed to resolve the issue. There is no one at the location that could repeat the "update" to hopefully fix the issue that way. I have a copy of the 11.2 DVD iso file on the remote computer. Is there some way that I can get the repository DB rebuilt or reinstalled so that I can then install other software and do Online Updates? Whatever I try has to be doable with the system running so that I can OpenVPN connect and issue commands remotely.

Now the problem is: how can I associate this kind of files to the application? I mean, I can change the application for *all* compressed zip files, I know how to do it, but I do not want it. Just zip files that happens to have a name ending in .fm6 should be associated with them.
I know it's possible. In the end, openoffice.org files are really zip files (try it), and they are treated differently.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for an effective way to manage use of internet bandwidth by users on a local area network. Currently there is a simple broadband router and unmanaged switch, and a standalone Ubuntu Server (8.04) that provides DHCP, DNS and mail for the LAN, and a web server. Ports are forwarded from a static external IP address to HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, SSH and IMAPS, and some security is provided by IP Tables (managed by using UFW).
There are 5 users on the network, and currently one or two of those 5 are using beyond our monthly download allowance of 30Gb. 1) To be aware of how many users are currently using the internet connection, and to divide the bandwidth between that number (so that if there are, say, 3 active connections, the total bandwidth available is divided 3 ways, rather than one of those users being able to hog all of it).
2) To allow each user to download up to 1/5 of 30Gb each month without any additional throttling (apart from the above), but once they go over that allowance to throttle them individually to, say, 10Kbps until the start of the new month.
I've heard other threads talking about both IP Tables and a proxy server such as Squid. I have no idea which of these would be most suited to the task. Currently, as I said, the Ubuntu server is standalone and only using 1 NIC, but it has 2 NICs and I could be configured to act as a gateway for the LAN, instead of the router, which is set to be the current default gateway.
I want to use Vidalia to manage a TOR relay. My /etc/default/tor file references another file /etc/default/tor.vidalia. It's supposed to help manage the TOR daemon. For whatever reason, I don't have a file called /etc/default/tor.vidalia.
