View 1 RepliesI am making a simple Pandora.com alternative for myself and a few friends where the user can upload his/her songs and listen to them anywhere. My intent is to make a lightweight, simple player in HTML5 so all the user needs is a current Firefox or Chrome to use it. I have set it up so that all uploaded songs get converted to .ogg and added to a database but I also want some metadata (not sure if that is the correct term) for the songs to be stored in the database so the player can tell the user what song he/she is listening too. I know there are several GUI tools for managing the title/artist/album info for songs but I'm having trouble finding any good ones I can use from the command line. If the song has the information already in the file, I think I can use mplayer to retrieve the information but it would be really great if there was one that would look up the song information online.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSo i have a fresh install of the server edition of Karmic, i'm running the Xfce desktop. When I attempt to manage users and groups through the GUI, I am prompted for what I think is the root password, the reason I say this is because the account I am currently logged in has sudo privileges and it does not accept that password at all, but I read that by default the root account is 'locked,' (to be honest it was so long ago since I last installed Ubuntu I completely forgot if it is or isn't, my current desktop installation has su access) is it asking for the root password? why doesn't my current user account password work if the root account is 'locked'? I can perform all other administrative tasks with sudo no problem.
the funny thing is, I have the exact same setup in a virtual machine, the same problem happens, except for some strange reason after changing the password on the only account (besides root), the password required to administer users and groups stayed the same after the change. (at the time of installation I just put both the user and root password the same and now that it is setup), i'm now ready to change the passwords. except now I read that the root account is locked by default, but this strange problem occurs.

1.) `uptime | awk -F ' ' {'print $10'} | cut -d ',' -f1 | awk -F '.' {'print $1'}` -- the output from this command results in a decimal figure, so when that value is parsed and placed in an if statement, the value is not seen as a number. load-monitor.sh: line 9: [: 4.96: integer expression expected/How can I allow a number like "4.56" to be seen as an actual number within the if statement and be compared to 4, for instance?
2.) I am running a cPanel server on CentOS 5.4 -- when I run mail -s "SUBJECT" $EMAILADDRESS the command just hangs, and stracing the process shows it stuck on a read syscall.
3.) If I wanted to write this script in PHP, I have one primary confusion -- how can I mimic the functionality of obtaining the output from uptime via awk, etc. so that I can determine what the server load is at a given time? Which PHP function(s) would assist in that regard?

I ran ubuntu live cd in a PC shop to see if I can use the ff command: echo 30 > /proc/acpi/video/xxx/xxx/brightness
However, all brightness files just contain <not supported>. Is there another way to adjust the brightness (not using buttons)?
Since the monitor is dimming when idle (through built in power management), is it safe to assume that there is a way to do this?

Im not getting able to neither add new users using command useradd nor delete existing users using command userdel. And even Im not getting able to login into any existing users except root. It was ok before. Im having this problem very recently on my linux server. Im using RHEL5.

I've setup a PPTP server on my ubuntu 11.04. PPTP settings seem to be OK and I can connect to my machine from a Windows PPTP client. But then I dont have access to Internet from my Windows machine. Authentication is successful and I can see GRE traffic to my PPTP interface on my Ubuntu, but I can't reach any host (including Internet) after my Ubuntu machine. I suspect this is a routing or NATing issue.

I will probably use phplivedocx for DOC and DOCX files, but I haven't found any library for Excel files.I may use PHP to call a some printing command to make the conversion, but I've never tried that on a server (which obviously) doesn't have Open Office installed (meaning no PDF printer driver I guess)

Downloaded it via the browser.Now I got webmin running and tried to remove KDE again. Some time ago I installed LAMP in my server, but now I need to execute .php files from the command-line (in order to execute some manteinance scripts for mediawiki). Seems that the PHP files running in the server are run thru some kind of "module" in apache2. Can I tell apache2 to run a .php file in command-line mode using that php module? Or should I install a fresh copy of php-5? Won't that interfere with apache or mangle the system?

I have a php file that I need to execute via a cronjob. This file should be run by the www-data user as its a file in my /var/www/project folder. When I run this file under root (php -f cron.php) everything works perfectly, but I want it to run under the www-data to be safe. Before I run it vai crontab I tried it via command line as the www-data user and I receive errors:
Fatal Error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes expired (tried to allocate 232 bytes).
But when I run it as the root user I get no errors and everything works correctly. The file cron.php is used to process automated tasks in my CRM. So I don't really want to have the root user running a crontab every few minutes for this.
Must the www-data user be given more permissions? I am using Ubuntu 6.06LTS

I'm installing a 10.04 server remotely - it's basically an RSYNC host for backups. I've got one minor issue - it's really more of an annoyance, but I would like to have it solved.When sending e-mails, the messages come in addressed to three destinations - when it's only supposed to be sent to one. What's worse is that the two additional addresses are based on the hostname of the machine.Let me explain: I use this command:Code:mail -s Testing email@somedomain.comI then compose the e-mail and send it. The mail arrive a few seconds later but addresed to the following:Code:from@hostname.domain.com;email@somedomain.com;hostname@hostname.domain.comThe "from@hostname.domain.com" has the actual word "from" in the address. I've installed many, many servers like this in the past and this is the first time that anything wonky with email has happened that I couldn't fix or explain. The machine is running postfix and I installed the bsd-mailx package to get the command line "mail" command (I used to install "mailx", but this seems to work just like the old package).

Trying to setup a Kerberos + OpenLDAP server to manage users for our Samba shares (was going to use just OpenLDAP, but apparently it is less secure than using Kerberos with it). (Distro: CentOS 5.5) Haven't even gotten to the point of connecting either to Samba yet. I have set up a Kerberos server, and configured it as necessary. I am happy that it is working as intended, as I can login and manage principals from both the local terminal and remotely on other clients.
I have setup a server (sv1.myhost.net), and configured it to talk to Kerberos (auth.myhost.net). I have created both a [URL] principal, and a testuser principal. I have set the password on the testuser but not on the host/sv1.myhost.net. I have added the keys for both users to the keytab file on the sv1.myhost.net. I am at a Windows 7 machine (on the same internal network), and have installed the Network Identity Manager. It is able to request a ticket successfully for the testuser account.
When I use putty w/GSSAPI (0.58) to remote login to the system, it says using 'testuser' and then just hangs there. Eventually putty connection times out. The fact that both machines can connect to the auth server to communicate with kerberos correctly suggests firewalls are correct. The relevant entries in sshd_config have been uncommented to tell srv1 to use Kerberos authentication.
