Feb 6, 2010I'd like to put a few MP3s on it but I'm not able to connect to the phone via USB on my xubuntu box to drop files onto it. It works on my company computer (Windows XP) so I know it's not a problem with the phone.
I'm still somewhat of an ubuntu noob so it may be a quick fix that I have overlooked/don't understand yet. Once I plug the phone in to the box, I tell Android to enable USB storage and mount the drive. Here's the error I get afterwards:

Here's the settings set in Storage Device Manager:
Mountpoint: /media/sdc1
Type: vfat

Is there a config change I need to make in Storage Device Manager to make this work, or am I missing something else?

May 23, 2010I find myself using SSH from my mobile phone to manage administrative tasks when I'm away--completing updates and the like, things that can be done during normal usage but sap my RAM and CPU to the point of frustration, given the hardware I've got to work with. It's convenient, I can do what I wish (without the benefit of an X session) while I'm at work. The issue I run into is the fact that my auth.log is littered with items like this:

Which tells me that some inconspicuous person and/or botnet keeps trying to get into my system. This is generally annoying; at this point, my system isn't used for anything particularly critical; however, the fact that only failures or questionable successes--such as those from my mobile, the IP and Host of which can vary a fair bit (and the host resolution almost always fails, based on the way the IP/Host advertisement is presented to an external host is established--it's essentially manufactured)--doesn't tell me who/what has figured it out. I've done what I can to tamp down SSH access to the system, root is blocked via SSH (a moot item, since root isn't allowed locally), I've limited only my own username as allowed to connect via SSH...all it would take, though, is an alphanumeric dictionary that hits the right combination to get a password prompt, and to be able to brute-force it from there.
Overall, I know there's few, if any ways, to prevent someone attempting to get into my system via SSH; what additional steps can I take to minimize the possibility that I might end up compromised?

Nov 25, 2010Right now I am struggling to fix my Motorola RAZR V3 phone (it is just one year old). The problem is that the internal speakers (the regular ones, used to listen to the caller) are apparently set to a quite low volume and I can not hear almost anything. Researching similar cases I learned about the existence of several software tools designed to hack the phone and raise the volume on the aforementioned speakers; unfortunately those tools are Windows-only.
I also stumbled into a Linux program (moto4linux) which apparently would allow me to do the same thing, unfortunately I've been unable to connect to my phone using that program. Before I go any further in my attempts to force moto4linux to connect to my phone, could anyone please confirm that such program is actually able to hack the phone's speakers the way I want to? Or is it merely for file & contacts synchronizing?

It is possible without ftp? Another question. Which bad errors can make a newbie like me configuring apache with linux? I ask this because I read all where that I could not manage a server system if I'm not a sysadmin, but I have only to put in a site... what the real risk?

It doesn't matter how I choose to connect it - "File Transfer" and "Phone Mode" - both does not work. The phone IS charching, when it is connected, but it doesn't shows anywhere. When I type "lsusb" in terminal, it does not show me my phone. When I look in "/var/log/messages" there is NO error. It does not even show the procedure of connecting and disconnecting the phone. Unfortunately there is no Linux version of PDANet, so the only computer I can tether my phone with is my laptop which is running Vista.
I also have a desktop running Koala, which is ultimately the computer I want to get connected. I'm hoping that there is some way I can use Internet Connection Sharing on the laptop to accomplish my goal, but I haven't had much luck so far.
