Fedora :: Audio In - Audio Out Passthrough - Manage The Volume ?

May 18, 2011

The workstation is running FC14.

I have the audio out of the media machine passed into the line in on my workstation. It's just handly to have the audio pass in this way so that i can manage the volume or headphones or whatever from one machine.

This worked, and worked well, for a very long time. I recently reinstalled the workstion, FC14 still. After the reinstall, my passthrough doesn't work.

If i start up some media on the media machine, and then open up the volume control on the workstation, i can see the volume meter moving along with the audio, but nothing plays out of my speakers.

Fedora :: F11 Audio Volume Changes Everytime When Switch To New Song In Any Music Player?

Sep 2, 2009

First of all, this is not a rhythmbox issue, but a pulseaudio one. Everytime I click on next song (in rhythmbox or amarok), the master volume drops about 25 percent. Once the volume goes to 0, the volume cannot be modified without going into sound preferences and unmuting the volume for the application. This is *very* annoying. Basically, it means that everytime I click on next song, I need to follow that with 2 or 3 hits of up volume.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Better Audio Player Than Rhythmbox To Manage Podcasts?

Feb 26, 2011

I used Gpodder to manage my podcast downloads and it works well for my needs. Currently I have been using Rhythmbox to manage the handling of my podcasts in terms of storing and playing. Because I don't have access to radio (I'm in India) I only ever listen to podcasts and I play them randomly throughout the day. My needs are quite simple yet there are a couple of frustrations with Rhythmbox that I'm still looking to improve, so is there an alternative? I've tried Banshee, which isn't much of an improvement on Rhythmbox, and I use Quod Libet for music, so that one is out of the question as I want to keep that exclusively for music, not podcasts. Here are my problems:

- Rhythmbox does not remember whether a track has been played after turning the computer off (or maybe after library has been rescanned). As a consequence I end up hearing the same podcasts. Why does it do this? This is illogical.

- I can't stop Rhythmbox from playing a track that has already been played. This is available in Banshee ('Repeat Off' feature).

- When I remove a track from my library in Rhythmbox (right-hand mouseclick and select 'remove') it is only removed in that session. It comes back when I reboot the computer or rescan the library. Then...

- When I delete a track from my library, it deletes the actual file from my computer. In Foobar I was able to permanently delete the track from my library but not from my computer. Is there a compromise between this issue and the one above?

- In Banshee I cannot change the display of the Browser. It seems to be showing 'Artist' in one window and then 'Album Art', Album. Artist in the window underneath. This is a pointless display for me. Because of the way podcasts are generally labeled the most useful tag to view by is Album.

- In Rhythmbox my favourite display is where the browser displays Album (I can't change it from Artist and Album but I can live with that), and where the library displays Title | Album | Play Count | Date Added. However I can't drag columns like I can in Banshee.

To sum up - I want to permanently delete from the library tracks that have already been played; only play a track once; have the media player remember my preferences after reboot; give priority to Album in the browser; have flexibility in the library to display any column how/where I want. I have tried Banshee and Rhythmbox and need a mix of features that both offer. I'm hoping I've just over-looked some features in either player.

Fedora :: Getting The Pulse Audio Server To Find The Hw0 With The Common M-audio 24/96 Audiophile

Nov 18, 2009

I am having trouble getting the pulse audio server to find the hw0 with the common m-audio 24/96 audiophile. This card worked with previous versions of all forms of pulse but seems to bork on the HW0 function for audio out...which is a stereo analogue simple output. Audacity sees the HW functions but pulse does not! Here is a screen shot of the pulse crap. And another screen shot of what the real card at "alsamixer -c 0" sees. There is no dac or adc detected or configured with pulse. This does not make any sense as alsa and alsamixer has all the correct device controls available to any other software that uses the ice1712 driver.

I am using Fedora 12 amd 64 as a live usb on a 16 gig stick and want to be able to record and mix audio on to HD with my reliable high end m-audio pci sound card without having to mess with the pulse crap or having to install a full HD option. BTW in the pulse sound configuration gui dropdown list there is no indication of HW0 and the only devices that are available in pulse are digital outs.....go figure, so essentially I can see all the correct connections and use programs that access alsa directly eg: audacity but have no sound through the crappy and ever borked pulse audio server! Any suggestions as to how to remove all the pulse stuff that comes with most distros that use gnome? I have done this deed before with Ubuntu but do no know how to do the deed with an rpm based system. If I install a non pulse version of xmms and let it use jackd then I should have reliable sound for cd audio etc and should be able to configure VLC, Ardour and Nted well without pulse getting in on the action and screwing up my sound.

Fedora Hardware :: Audio Devices Gone - No Audio With F12

Apr 3, 2010

Right after I installed F12 on my desktop (using KDE), System Settings showed 4-5 audio devices.

At the beginning, sound wasn't working, so I promoted the Intel audio device to the top of the list and then I got audio.

Next login, the system complained that there were unmanaged audio devices and I chose to keep the configuration (or something like that...).

However, now only the "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" device is listed and I have no sound again

I also tried to promote the GStreamer backend over Xine, without luck.

Here are some specs:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Set A Default Audio Volume Above 100%?

Apr 25, 2011

When I go into Sound Preferences I can crank up the output volume above 100%, making it audible from my monitor's built in speakers.

(this is for a kiosk that doesn't have room for extra powered speakers) Every time I reboot it resets output volume to 100%. Is there a way to change the volume back to 125% or whatever max is so the general public can hear the video that is played after a reboot? (this is to be a permanent installation that won't even have a keyboard or mouse attached, so automating this is a must)

Ubuntu :: Pulse Audio Volume Control GUI Flashes On Then Off?

Jun 26, 2010

When I hit the Pulse Audio Device Chooser icon and then click on 'Volume Control' the volume control GUI flashes on for long enough for me to realise it has flashed on and then is gone again! If I run the chooser as root from a terminal (sudo padevchooser) I get this response when I hit the error:

Code:

**
** ERROR:(pavucontrol.cc:339):void StreamWidget::setVolume(const pa_cvolume&, bool): assertion failed: (v.channels == channelMap.channels)

Strange thing is, I have spent a lot of time working on my wife's laptop and Pulse Audio was working great (after many brain twisting, hair ripping hours of working on it) and indeed is still working despite the lack of GUI. This is all good except I want to change the output device for ringing in Skype and this is where I need to 'Move Stream ...' and can't get to it.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Skype Audio And Missing Volume Indicator?

Jul 13, 2011

basically I was having some problems with the audio in skype, and as per the instructions on this page, I ran

Code:

sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio && sudo apt-get install esound

(note: using apt-get not aptitude). The only effect this had was to remove the volume indicator/menu from unity's top panel and didn't fix the sound in skype. So I did

Code:

sudo apt-get purge esound
sudo apt-get install pulseaudio

and the volume indicator is still missing. And the audio still doesn't work in skype.

Hardware :: Tweeters Blown Up By Large Volume Level Audio Files

Dec 12, 2010

I am concerned about my tweeters in relation to signal coming from the computer. I have machine LINE OUT fed into my preamplifier (hardware audio component) all the time. The max levels of tuner, tape recorder, turntable, etcetera are all "equalized". That is, they all more or less deliver the same output level to the preamp. The difference between a CDDA level and that of another one is always minimal. The same goes for vinyls (not "so minimal"). As to radio broadcasts, one may be xmiting with great power and make differences larger, but still no harm for the tweeters, relatively speaking. Mine are 50w four-way loudspeaker systems (forgive the word, I used to call them baffles).

The power amplifier is 30w per channel so, theoretically, it cannot damage the speakers. But the preamp (Yamaha C-2) can deliver a very large signal. When this signal is unduly large, the woofer and mid-range speakers won't suffer. But the enormous resultant distortion can damage the tweeters. Some audio files have the signal recorded at very high levels. And I could launch aplayer, play or mplayer, or any GUI player, or I could receive an email audible notification when amixer's output controls are near the top and put my tweeters in danger. I think the core of the problem is the huge variation in level between different audio files.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: 11.1 Updates To Pulse Audio In Gnome Improve Audio Functionality ?

Oct 17, 2010

I'm thinking of installing openSUSE-11.1 Gnome on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop because the wireless in Gnome is much more user friendly than KDE3/KDE4 in openSUSE-11.1. The idea is to give this laptop to my 84-year old mother and things need to 'just work' for her (she currently has a desktop running openSUSE-11.1 KDE3 that uses a WIRED interface to the web).

I refuse to update this laptop to openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 (nor other recent distributions) because every kernel update after the 2.6.27 kernel has broken the Intel i855GM graphics drivers for that laptop. There are many bug reports and none have fixed the problem for this Fujitsu-Siemens implementation of the i855GM graphics.

Hence I am looking at Gnome.

I booted the laptop to a Gnome openSUSE-11.1 liveCD and wireless is easy and works great. But audio is very very VERY bad. It is incredibly user unfriendly and it does NOT work well. I assume that is because pulse audio in openSUSE-11.1 was very immature.

I note these updated packages in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository:

Code:

So my question is, did the updates to pulse audio (in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository) fix the pulse audio situation? Are there ANY helpful views on this?

Currently my wife is using this laptop with KDE-4.4.4 (and openSUSE-11.1) so I can't just install Gnome and play with it without taking the laptop away from her for a while (note the hard drive is too small for a dual boot of KDE/Gnome).

With 11.2 the PCI sound path plays the system sounds (suse start-up or shut-down sounds) but not the streaming audio data (skype, flash player). But these are played by the mainboard audio instead. The audio-tests from yast->hardware->sound work for both paths. How should I configure the system to redirect the audio streams to the desired (PCI) audio path?
