Fedora :: KVM Has Become Unstable / What To Do?

Jul 30, 2010

Has anyone else experienced problems with KVM in the last few days?
I've been running KVM VMs for the last year. Until sometime in the last few days they've been working fine. I have three F13 systems that I'm running KVM on, an iCore7 with a CentOS5.5 VM, a Core 2 with a CentOS5.5 VM and another Core2 with an XP VM. I haven't seen any problems with the iCore7 system but the two Core2 systems are both exhibiting serious problems.

The CentOS VM is hanging. I can ping it but I can't ssh into it anymore. Prior to that state I was able to ssh in put I couldn't do a ps. Eventually I couldn't ssh in anymore. This is repeatable, I've rebooted the system a couple of times and restarted the VM, it always crashes in the same way.

The XP VM is running but the networking is behaving strangely. Basic networking is working but I can't access the Workgroup although I can access network mounted SAMBA shares that I had previously setup. This could be a SAMBA issue but it started happening at the same time as my other problems.

Another problem that I had was that the virtual disks on multiple VMs on both systems became unbootable. I was able to fix this by removing the disks and then adding them back.

Ubuntu :: Slower And More Unstable Than Fedora?

Dec 26, 2010

Why is Ubuntu slower and more unstable than Fedora on my laptop? I thought, as it is a more popular distro, it wouldn't be. I've only used it on my laptop for a couple of days and I already had at least 3 default software crashes. On Fedora, I had about one crash per two weeks. Ubuntu is also slightly slower. Opening the Social broadcast messages window took so long to open, that meanwhile, I totally forgot that I opened it.

How has this situation arisen and what can I do to ensure that packages are only installed from relatively stable repositories?

Fedora :: Kernel Plato Won't Work - Machine Became Unstable & Slow

Feb 18, 2011

Is it possible, on a much older computer to hit a point at which any newer kernel just won't work, where a lesser one once did? (or for that matter the whole OS) - OS is F14. The reason I ask is that I've never had a problem w/ any, (kernel) until now. I'm running a PIII w/ 512M (max) - video is Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G400/G450 (rev 04)

In the process of trying to fix another problem, I allowed the updates. After, my machine became unstable & slow to respond (w/ drive wanting to run a LOT) I tried rebooting, thinking that it needed to clear some garbage I may have caused. That SEEMED to help but after a while it started again. Seeming to be intermittent, so I tried the older kernel & it all stopped (or so it seem, so far) Also, I removed the "offending" one & was wondering how to skip over it?

Ubuntu :: Clusterssh Unstable KDE 4.3.2?

Feb 2, 2010

In one of the last KDE 4 updates, or perhaps when moving from intrepid to karmic, using the application "clusterssh" has become completely unstable. Some of the symptoms I have experienced:

1. Window focus problems. Clicking on a single xterm window from a group of xterms controlled by clusterssh does not switch focus to that window. Focus stays on the clusterssh application, so output is still directed to all xterms. Previously, I could interact with a single xterm, or with all of them.

2. Clipboard problems. After using clusterssh for awhile, and perhaps using the clipboard within clusterssh cutting and pasting between other applications completely fails. The only work-around is to completely log out of your kde session, hence killing your clusterssh sessions.

3. xterm window manipulation. At some point during a clusterssh session, all xterm windows become locked in place. You can't move them at all. This also leads to focus problems described above. The work-around for this is to switch virtual desktops, and then switch back to your clusterssh session, and now the windows can be manipulated and re-organized again.

Ubuntu :: Vino 2.28.2 Unstable On 10.4?

May 5, 2011

I have a Linux box with Ubuntu 10.4 that I use basically to play music and download files. It doesn't have a monitor or keyboard, the only way I access it is using Ultra VNC. Yesterday, the automatic update service offered to update Vino (among other things) to version 2.28.2 and, as usual, I accepted.

After the update Ultra VNC has had trouble negotiating the protocol with Vino. The only way I got it to work was to force using Tight as the compression method, which provides a crappy image quality. Besides that, at some unexpected moment, the connection just dies.

Can anyone help me to:
1.- Solve this issue with the current Vino version or
2.- Go back to the previous version that was working perfectly.

Debian :: Precautions When Updating Unstable?

May 5, 2010

What is the recommended way to do updates when running sid (especially those involving updates of xorg or desktop environments as they should not be running at that time)? I imagine this would be safe:

1. # apt-get update
2. # apt-get dist-upgrade -d
3. Switch to a text mode terminal (say, tty1).
4. # /etc/init.d/kdm stop
5. # apt-get dist-upgrade

Or simply using init 1.

OpenSUSE Install :: Switch From Unstable Kde 4.5 To Kde 4.4.1?

Mar 5, 2010

I am using some unstable set of kde packages with opensuse 11.2-i586, at the moment the version number is

KDE 4.4.62 (KDE 4.5 >= 20100203).

That I have these packages is due to some misconfiguration / error, and I would like to replace them with something stable, say kde 4.4.1. I had a look into yast, found an option like "use these (kde 4.4) packages as system packages", but run into numerous compatability issues afterwards so that I can't make the switch.

So my question is: How can I replace the unstable kde 4.5 packages with kde 4.4.1? I don't know suse very well, so if there is some step-by-step description available somewhere

After placing the sound card on top, I got sound in JuK and KDE login/logout sounds, for example, but there's still no sound in VLC or when viewing Flash videos (games seem to have no sound, too).Another thing is that unless I mute the Beep channel (using KMix), I hear awful screeching even if nothing is playing. Muting the chanel stops that.I had no such problems running sidux + KDE 4.3.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Unstable 11.3 On Gateway Laptop (64-bit)?

Jul 29, 2010

I'm rather new to Linux and haven't been on it for more than a week. I've been trying to find a Linux operating system that'd be compatible with my computer - I went through about 4 of them before finding openSUSE and really liking it. My main problem now, however, is that it seems to be rather unstable when it comes to running programs after a while. I've been on the computer for about 30 minutes for this session and tried using skype, for example. After about 5-10 minutes of using it, skype ended up crashing. There weren't any other programs open at the time either. After a while of doing anything, it usually lags up, taking about a minute to unstick so programs respond, and even gets to the point where it sometimes doesn't detect my keyboard strokes (though I think this is a separate problem that has to do with the disfunctional multimedia buttons - usually, after a minute or two, the typing begins to work again).

I've also noticed, however, that when trying to start up, the computer automatically goes to a 'start up options' screen where I can either boot in openSUSE normally or try the failsafe option. Is this normal? Usually, before shutting down or booting up, a black screen with white writing will flash by, sometimes followed by multicolored stripes before settling on the openSUSE log-in screen - at first this freaked me out and I'm still not sure if that means it's having an adverse reaction with the computer. The webcam doesn't stay disabled either after restarting, but I'm not sure if this is normal or not.

Has anyone else experienced these problems? The Windows Vista Home 64-bit that I had installed on my computer originally was OEM and I tried calling Gateway for help with the computer when something happened to the operating system that made it unable to connect to the internet regardless of what I tried to do (even the system diagnostics tool didn't help). I mention this because I'm wondering if the fact that it was OEM might have something to do with it? Or should I not try Linux at all on here and return back to Windows for this one? I've read around and a few people have said Linux is best working when installed by the manufacturer before purchase. Is this true?

After the problem with Vista, when I came upon the Linux OS's I was really intrigued, and I find I really like them especially for the fact that there's so much interaction with the terminal command prompt. I'd like to continue working with the openSUSE OS but does it sound like I should? or should I install the 32-bit version instead?

It is integrated on P5Q-E mobo. Luckily, I also have Marvell 88E8001 so I switched and it works. I was thinking that new kernel broke driver, and thought that next update will fix it. But yesterday I needed both NICs, and 88E8056 is still did not work. I am using .31-17 kernel. So I do not know if my NIC died or what? Can someone with same NIC say if it works for him? Ubuntu Networking :: Unstable Mobile Broadband ?

Mar 6, 2010

I have just switched to Ubuntu from Win 7 RC. So far its been fun, learning to use terminal and all. But I have got a problem now I cannot find a solution to.

I am using 3 Mobile Broadband. The thing just worked - I plugged it in, created a new connection, modified config a little and was happily browsing.

However, it started acting out yesterday. When I boot the system with the modem plugged in, the USB stick is recignised and NetworkManager starts connecting (I have auto connect on). It then shows the "connected" message, and generally appears working fine.

On the other hand, I cannot open a single page in Firefox, it shows the default server not found page.

I used the approach Windows taught me: close, open, retry. I unmount the 3 Mobile Broadband drive, pull the modem out and reconnect it. NetworkManager then does it's job and this time everything works.

I nether had this problem in Win7 or Vista. It looks to me something goes wrong during the booting when the modem is plugged in.

Ubuntu :: Extremely Unstable Maverick Install

The specs of the computer:
Pentium D processor
1GB RAM
Intel integrated graphics card
160GB HDD, 40GB ext4 ubuntu partition

The only problem I can think of is that I've had stability issues on ext4. I *think* Pentium D's might be 64-bit, but I don't think that'd be an issue. If I can get this sorted out, the install will count as an epic win, first time I've ever experienced complete out of the box hardware support, printer included, plus compiz on an intel integrated graphics card.

Ubuntu :: Unstable Maverick Meerkat Installation

Dec 21, 2010

I've been running Ubuntu on an IBM Thinkpad T42 for about 3 years and have never had any instability but my Meerkat upgrade 10.10 about a week ago has never been right and seems to be getting worse. It's almost impossible to use the Internet. Whether Epiphany or Firefox, the screen keeps going grey and regularly freezes the computer completely so that NO keyboard commands work and only a hard restart will do. I also have problems streaming audio feeds with RP 11 or VLC. VLC is more of a problem which I find odd as it is solid in Windoze.

PS The instability isn't only Internet related. There are lots of strange little things like authentication windows not closing after I enter password and hit Enter or click OK, not being able to paste in Terminal (sometimes not others), toolbard in apps appearing differently sometimes, stuff like that.
