Ubuntu Networking :: Marvell 88E8056 Is Unstable?
Jan 8, 2010
During Karmic betas, my Marvell 88E8056 did not work at all. When Karmic got released, it started working but after December update, become terribly unstable, disconnecting like every 5 minutes. It is integrated on P5Q-E mobo. Luckily, I also have Marvell 88E8001 so I switched and it works. I was thinking that new kernel broke driver, and thought that next update will fix it. But yesterday I needed both NICs, and 88E8056 is still did not work. I am using .31-17 kernel. So I do not know if my NIC died or what? Can someone with same NIC say if it works for him? Does it work in Lucid Alpha 1 ?

I'm currently experiencing some strange troubles installing ubuntu 10.04 /10.10 (tried both, same issue). My network connection appears to fail after some very small amount of packet is sent/received. Searched a bit around the forums here, and ended up installing the Marvell drivers (v10.87.3.3) with success. However, the issue remains. Here's the relevant info:
i386 installation
MotherboardFI lanparty dk 790gx-m2rs
Network controller: Marvell 88e8056
kernel:2.6.32-30-generic
Network config: manual (and tested working config on other computer)

I have an old Lenovo PC on which I have Debian 8.3 64bit with no desktop environment. It has an onboard Marvell 88E8056 NIC that SHOULD be able to run at 1Gb/s but the driver (SKY2) that is loaded will only do 100Mb/s.
So I try to get this thing to work with a new driver.
For that it seems I have to download it from here: [URL] ....
There I download Linux_v10.93.3.3.tar.zip which has directions on how to compile and install the SK98LIN driver.
Since I never done that before, I found this on youtube : [URL] ....
But where for him it does compile, for me it breaks off with saying missing version.h :
.<snip>
.
Check kernel header versiongrep: /lib/modules/3.16.0-4-amd64/source/include/linux/version.h: No such file or directory
./functions: line 1117: [: !=: unary operator expected
grep: /lib/modules/3.16.0-4-amd64/source/include/linux/version.h: No such file or directory
./functions: line 1126: [: !=: unary operator expected
(Kernel:3.16.0 == Header:) [ OK ]
Check kernel functions (Changed: nothing) [ OK ]
Compile the kernel (error) [ failed ]
An error has occurred during the compile proces which prevented the installation from completing. Take a look at the log file install.log for more information. Installation of package failed.

1) Has anyone had any luck using the above wireless adapter with any of the Fedora releases and ndiswrapper? On the ndiswrapper wiki it says it is supported but I would like to know if anyone has had any personal experience under Fedora.
2) If I install F11 from the live CD, will everything that I need to install and run ndiswrapper be included in the installation, or would I have to download and install via the full DVD? The reason I ask is because the only way this computer has internet is by using said wireless card, so I would not be able to update F11 until after setting it up.
3) If the live CD does not have everything that I need, would it be possible to download whatever it is I need prior to the F11 installation, save it to my external hard drive, and then install it after I install Fedora?

I have built-in-motherboard Ethernet with this MArvell 88e8059 chip. During CentOS 5.5 install it didnt find it. then i found some page here on forums which said how to install sk98lin driver, and several people reported it working after that. Their chips were 8056 and others.. So i decided that should probably work in my case too, i installed it, and then i could see it in Network COnfiguration manager.
But during reboot, it cannot obtain IP information, and in Network Config manager it is "Inactive", setting it to Active fails to obtain IP again...

I have just switched to Ubuntu from Win 7 RC. So far its been fun, learning to use terminal and all. But I have got a problem now I cannot find a solution to.
I am using 3 Mobile Broadband. The thing just worked - I plugged it in, created a new connection, modified config a little and was happily browsing.
However, it started acting out yesterday. When I boot the system with the modem plugged in, the USB stick is recignised and NetworkManager starts connecting (I have auto connect on). It then shows the "connected" message, and generally appears working fine.
On the other hand, I cannot open a single page in Firefox, it shows the default server not found page.
I used the approach Windows taught me: close, open, retry. I unmount the 3 Mobile Broadband drive, pull the modem out and reconnect it. NetworkManager then does it's job and this time everything works.
I nether had this problem in Win7 or Vista. It looks to me something goes wrong during the booting when the modem is plugged in.

A fresh Xubuntu 10.10 install will give me access to my network, but with fluctuating speeds, and certain pages load forever. I have tried the blacklist edit as well as ndiswrapper, and neither have helped me. I can't find a madwifi guide for this issue either. Details: Upon fresh install of xubuntu 10.10, wireless is detected. I enter my, key, hit google, and all is good. Then I try to log into my online classes. Firefox hung forever. So I tried a few other sites, and to my disappointment, random sites seemed to fail. Brand-new, fresh, clean Xubuntu 10.10 install, Toshiba Satellite M45-165.

I have an USB 3G Modem to access broadband internet. The USB 3G Modem is a flying angel from TechFaith company. The modem works fine under Windows XP. The USB 3G Modem propose a data partition with an automatic installation of its driver and software. When I plug the device to the 9.04 Ubuntu workstation it mounts the data partition, but does not find the 3G modem device. I search the internet to find a solution, and the only working solution I found is the following. However, this solution is not stable, after some minutes the device is dropped (no more ttyUSB). I can not use the same process to enable the device.
Code:
su -
eject /dev/sr1
modprobe -v option
echo "1d09 1026" >/sys/bus/usb-serial/drivers/option1/new_id
[code]....
I used the wizard to configure the braodband access (Brunei/B-mobile). It works for somes minutes, and then the connection drops, the /dev/ttyUSB desappears and I can not redo the process.I have to enter the commands in a root shell, the sudo command will not enable the device. Why it does not works with sudo?

I understand that wireless is one of the most common problems with Linux, although I did not have this experience with past distributions or versions. After two years away from Ubuntu I installed 10.04 and everything is working fine except the wireless connection. Actually, it does work and connect, but goes up and down, loses connection and in most cases does not reconnect, unless I am 1 meter from the router. The room next door is already too far, a place where I normally have my laptop connecting perfectly with XP.
I am using a Toshiba M70,some additional information below:

I'm using a notebook with Intel 4965AGN and connecting to a Linksys WRT320N router. I can connect most of the time but after a while (sometimes a few minutes, sometimes a few hours) I lose connection. The notification icon would not change. I would only find out when I browse or click on a link and it would just get stuck at "Looking for <url>..." My wife's notebook would still be connected to the router even after mine has mysteriously disconnected. But she uses another os.

I'm using an Atheros ath9k wireless card that has been pretty stable since Ubuntu 9.04. I did a clean install of Natty and ever since my wireless connection has been pretty unstable.
It doesn't actually disconnects but I lose all connectivity. The wifi card continues loaded with a static IP Address assigned to it but I cannot connect to anything. The only way to fix it is restating the network manager and I have to do it at least a couple of times every day.
I tried to whitelist ath_pci on /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ath_pci.conf but the problem still persists. Also yesterday I enabled the ubuntu backports on my software sources but so far no kernel updates.
Here are some of the messages filling up the logs:

I'm having trouble with my Samsung Netbook N220 and its Realtek 8192 wireless card and could use some help with diagnostics. I would like to use the netbook as a server and after a day or so the system stops responding. What I'd like to know:
- What do the "========>ieee80211_parse_info_param(): athros AP is exist" spam messages actually say? Does anyone else have this and stability problems?
- Why is the realtek driver package not working?
I'm running Ubuntu Netbook 10.04/Kernel 2.6.32-24-generic. Initially the card was unable to connect, so I installed the Realtek driver rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0017.0507.2010 which adds a kernel module r8192se_pci.ko. At first my system was hanging during bootup. I then restored /lib/modules/2.6.32-24-generic and now the card is connecting but the system is unstable. The 2.6.32-23-generic kernel, modules listed below, still has modules as installed by the realtek driver and is not working. Below the drivers supplied by ubuntu
./2.6.32-24-generic/kernel/ubuntu/rtl8192se/r8192se_pci.ko
./2.6.32-24-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rtl8192su

Every time I download torrents in Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop, using Transmission or Deluge clients, the wireless transfer speed abruptly drops off, becomes very choppy, and in general doesn't remain stable. It's not only the torrent download that slows down, but it's everything including web surfing, even though I'm not maxing out my connection speed. It's not that I'm getting disconnected from my router, it's just that the wireless transfer speed drops off, becomes intermittent, and never gets back up to full speed.
At first I thought that my ISP was throttling my connection, but this issue doesn't happen with a direct cable connection to my router, nor did it happen when I was running Ubuntu 10.04 before. It also doesn't happen when I'm downloading the exact same torrents over wireless using my netbook running Ubuntu Netbook Remix. This issue ONLY seems to happen when using a bittorrent client while on wireless on Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop. I can max out my internet connection speed by streaming videos, downloading from FTP, etc. using wireless just fine, and the transfer speed remains stable. This also seems to happen with a couple of different wireless USB adapters (rt73usb or rtl8187 drivers).

I recently upgraded from Debian Lenny to wheezy (testing). I use a popular 3G modem, the Huawei E220. In Lenny everything worked fine. I use wvdial to connect and the script from lenny, which worked just fine.Unstable behaviour goes like this:I connect, pppd starts, then, either immediately or after a few seconds, the modem hangs up (pppd errorcode 16). Upon retry a SIM Error is being thrown or the /dev/ttyUSB0 node vanishes. Un/Re-plugging the modem and dialing again results in a working connection (mostly). Is there any possibility finding out why the modem hangs up (because a web research revealed that there are a million possibilities for this behaviour)?

Since I upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 my wireless connection is very unstable. I install the needed wireless drivers from 'Hardware Drivers' (Broadcom STA wireless driver) and I got wireless connection, but it randomly disconnect, and also connection is very slow.
I think that the problem are the drivers which are not very compatible with this version of Ubuntu, which means we need to wait for update? I have HP ProBook 4510s laptop, Intel PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN network card & Gembird NSW-R2 router. I'm only having this problem on Ubuntu 10.04, on other OS's the internet is fine.

This is my first use of Ubuntu, but I have previous decent experience on Centos & Mandriva. I've just installed Natty 11.04 on a box that was running a mandriva 2010 - and the network is acting quite strange. When I define a static IP for eth0 through the gui, along with route & dns, it sort of works: ssh is fine, vnc too. However, I have an asterisk running on the box, and it is wild: some packets get lost in the box.
An ngrep shows the packets reaching the interface, but they dont show in asterisk !!! I've done a ufw disable, iptables is empty (why cant I service iptable restart btw ?). ip route list show decent routes (eth0 default); When I switch to DHCP, it is better, but unstable... If i plug a wifi usb stick, it seems to be better... Is there some known issues that could explain this behaviour ? Usually, someone has already asked the question I need an answer to. My issue is that my onboard gig-e NIC isnt getting a MAC address. I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to getting it to work with built in kernel modules. I have a hack to make it work by manually setting it in rc.local. Sadly, this NIC works perfectly well under WinDos. I want to learn how to troubleshoot this kind of thing better, so even if you don't have an answerHere's some info:#lspci -v

On an Asus P5Q motherboard, CentOS 5.3 x64. (Separate thread as the other one has turned into just a discussion on my lm_sensors issue). The motherboard's primary SATA controller is the Intel P45 chipset. 6 ports, set to AHCI in BIOS, and all works a charm. Attached are 6 x SATA drives (2 x OS, 3 x data RAID5, 1 x backup). There is also a Marvell chip that provides PATA and also an underlying SATA chip (2 ports) that can do what Asus call Drive Xpert (stripe or mirror RAID) or be set to just standard SATA ports.
It's a SIL5723 behind what CentOS sees as "03:00.0 IDE interface: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE6121 SATA II Controller (rev b2)". Physically the Marvell has only a single optical drive attached to its PATA interface. CentOS has loaded marvell_pata (I assume for the PATA side of it) but I have no /dev/cdrom or /dev/dvd so no optical drive CentOS is trying to use 'ahci' for the Marvell's SATA ports. Dmesg tells me that when it 'sees' them as it boots:
scsi6 : ahci
scsi7 : ahci
scsi8 : ahci
ata7: SATA max UDMA/133 abar m1024@0xfeaffc00 port 0xfeaffd00 irq 16
ata8: SATA max UDMA/133 abar m1024@0xfeaffc00 port 0xfeaffd80 irq 16
ata9: DUMMY
It attempts to read SATA drives attached to it, but it just errors trying to access them on boot (e.g. "ata7: failed to recover some devices, retrying in 5 secs" etc). I need the extra SATA ports, and I could really do with having a usable CDROM drive. I found a driver for the Marvell 88SE6121 from Asus. But the latest driver in that is for what it calls "RHEL 50.2" and the script fails with a "Generic Protection Error". That driver looks for kernel "2.6.18-92.el5" in its base_ver variable in the script. Changing the base ver to -128 doesn't help. I have uploaded the driver for if [URL]. Is that modifiable to work on 5.3 / soon to be 5.4?

I have a dual boot system (Suse 10.0 and Windows XP Pro) in my notebook. My notebook is toshiba m358, which has a Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet Network Card (Marvell 88E8072) on it. My problem is this: in Windows XP Pro, the network card works well, but in openSUSE, the light on the network card does not turn on. I believe that there is no driver for the network card. I have tried several ways to solve this problem:
1. Download Marvell 88E8072's driver from "[URL]", whose name is "install_v10.85.3.3.tar.bz2", and then install it with following commands:
Code:
# tar xfvj install_v10.85.3.3.tar.bz2
# cd DriverInstall
# ./install.sh .....
Code:
# modprobe sk98lin
# WARNING: Deprecated config file /etc/modprobe.conf, all config files belong into /etc/modprobe.d/.
After I reboot the openSUSE, the light of network card is still off.
2. Follow "[URL]" to configure the Marvell 88E8072. It also does not work.
