Fedora Installation :: Install From Live CD With Nvidia Geforce 7150M?
Mar 17, 2009Fedora Core 8 did not recognize my Geforce 7150M display adapter (in a HP DV6000 laptop), neither did Fedora Core 10 I tried yesterday although this laptop is now already over one year old (I have used Vista because it works out of the box but it sucks as you might have guessed). That could be something I'd like to complain about but I choose not to, I simply want to know how to install Fedora 10 from a live CD (that is all I have now, no DVDs and not too much cash to buy some..) Live CD boots and I can access command line. If I have understood correctly, Nvidia proprietary driver supports my display adapter but it is not included in live cd so I could use X after installation. Problem is that I don't know how to successfully run the installer from text mode. I tried to execute 'anaconda' but it cannot find packages to install when it comes to that. There seem to be no instructions how to install from a live CD that I could find using Google. For sure someone knows what command to execute to begin installation?

Aug 28, 2010Today I received as a gift a 5 years old Gateway 500X CPU which is apparently dead due to a faulty motherboard (I still have to troubleshoot it, of course).
Even in the cause I can fix it, odds are I'll prefer to make the aforementioned CPU a donor for my other machines, instead of resurrecting an old Pentium 4 (no HT) system.
Being this the case I checked the parts for possible transplants:
512MB DDR PC2700 memory module (useful right off the shelf for my main desktop system).
120GB Maxtor IDE hard drive (also useful, assuming it is in working order).
128MB AGP8X NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440 graphics card.
On this last part (the graphics card) I have my doubts as of where to use it. My main desktop system already has an NVIDIA card: FX5200, 128MB, which is newer. The thing is that I've been doing some homework comparing both the MX440 and the FX5200 and get mixed opinions: for one thing the FX5200 is the latest of the two with some advantages like support for a later DirectX (which for Linux is pointless) and other things, but the FX5200 is also reported to be technically inferior to the MX440.
In your opinion/experience which card is a better performer? Should I expect a performance gain if I were to replace the FX5200 with the MX440?

Jul 21, 2011I'm need an AGP card that will work on 64 bit 11.04 ubuntu. out of box and using the nvidia proprietary drivers by default.I don't want to have to turn of xserver and install some driver.I have the FX4000 now and cannot figure out how to turn off x server and install the driver so I figured a cheap replacement with support in 11.04 would be easier and simpler when upgrading etc. Will the FX 5500 AGP card work out of the box with no configuration for a fresh install of 11.04 64 bit ubuntu ?

Mar 23, 2011This is to request the communities assistance with the following: As the title suggests, I am attempting to install 10.04.2 LTS on a PC equipped with an ASUS M2NPV-VM mobo and integral NVidia GeForce 6150 chipset/card and AMD dual processors.
Result: While the CD with the installation software loads, the splash screen comes up distorted and is displayed as several black and white horizontal bars. I have tried this with low end monitors with a VGA input with the same results. It appears to me as if though the video driver on the installation CD is not suitable for the mobo's chipset, but I may be wrong.

Feb 11, 2010I've enjoyed accelerated 3d graphics for years with this laptop, but since moving from CentOS 5.3 to FC12 I have had no 3d or opengl working at all.My install seems good. I'm running right now with the 'nvidia' driver in 1920x1200 res with no real problems except the lack of 3d. I have just finished trawling the forums again, coming back to: F12,F11 & F10 Nvidia driver guides [URL] I uninstalled all my nvidia packages, re-installed only "kmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686" and dependencies, ensured 'nvidia' was my selected driver in xorg.conf (using nvidia-config-display disable, then enable), and rebooted, and still no joy. No errors in Xorg.0.log. My 'glx' extension is loaded. 'nouveau' is rdblacklisted. SELinux is disabled. I have 3Gb RAM and so have chosen not to use the PAE kernel or modules.

May 5, 2010I installed Lubuntu 10.04 yesterday (yay, my first serious installation!), and I was trying to install the drivers for my video card (GeForce 6200), when it told me that it couldn't use ld. After oing some research I found out that it was in binutils. So I went over and got it and tried to ./configure it when it told me that there weren't any C compilers in $PATH, so I went over to the gcc homepage with a fine-toothed comb and found gcc 4.5.0. When I tried to./configure it, it also told me that there aren't any C compilers in $PATH.

Dec 5, 2009I have a Compaq Presario 8000 with an Nvidia Geforce FX 5950 Ultra on which a year ago I upgraded from Fedora 6 to Fedora 9, and this broke the Nvidia driver, since Fedora 9 was shipped with an X server incompatible with Nvidia. I went back to the 2d driver to get X working, and it sat that way for the past year. But recently I wanted to do some 3D work and decided to install Fedora 12, which hopefully has an X server that works with Nvidia.
I decided to do a cold install, re-partitioning my 80G hard drive at the same time. I backed up my data, ran the install CDs with no errors, and booted the system, with an immediate kernel panic: Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 64bit Install Freezes After Reboot During Autoconfiguration - GeForce 9300 Chipset (MCP7A)
Sep 15, 2010I just wanted to install openSUSE 11.3 64bit. Installation works fine until reboot request. It switches to console, saying that it tries to load without reboot, screen becomes black, i got a cursor with animated wait-symbol and then it freezes. Can't move the mouse, no reaction on keyboard inputs, HDD-led not blinking. If I reset my PC and boot the new installation, it says that an error occurred and asks me to complete the unfinished installation. It starts auto-configuration and freezes again at about 3%. I tried again and some time it did not start the graphical yast but in textmode. The freeze came at the same position, but it posted many lines on console with error messages. I could not scroll, so I saw only parts of it, saying kernel panic and many addresses.
I guessed that it has to do with my chipset and graphics card, it is a nVidia GeForce 9300 chipset (MCP7A) with onboard graphics. It works fine with openSUSE 11.2 64bit by the way, but it was not supported in earlier versions than 11.2. So I tried to install it with proprietary drivers. I started the installation again and added the nVidia repository and a Packman repo and selected the driver which works fine on 11.2. Error was same as above. Next I tried an openSUSE 11.3 32bit Live CD that came with some PC magazine and lay around and it is booting and works fine!
This was confusing to me, so I wanted to try the 64bit version of the live CD. Which was again not booting. It freezes at some part, maybe when it tries to start X. But it also freezes booting with 'nomodeset' (found it somewhere here), in VESA mode and even in textmode! So i guess it's not X what causes the freeze. But it is sometime at the end of booting up, as far as I can say. I would like to use the 64bit version but I don't know where to search for the problem. I checked every checksum before burning, so a broken media should not be the reason

If I update gcc, it says that the gcc version used to compile the kernel mismatch my gcc version. If I ignore that error, it says that it can't find my kernel source.

Then I first tried YaST to install NVidia drivers from the NVidia repo (added their repo), but sax2 wouldn't recognize them. So I downloaded their 190. (beta) drivers, installed the kernel source code and gcc 4.3. Then I switched to a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1), closed the x server, ran the driver install as described (gcc 4.3 is installed). Installer said that all is fine (I checked the log to be sure). So I ran sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia, but the driver still isn't recognized.

During the Opensuse 11.2 installation I installed the XEN becuase I wanted to run multipile XEN guest, I have Nividi GeForce 9600 GT and I have 8 G of RAM and 1.5 TB.
When I decided to boot from XEN mode, it do not boot and it went to the terminal, I logged in I tried to install the Nivid driver in XEN mood and I wan in the init 3, it says:

Nov 29, 2009On openSUSE 11.1 I was able to configure KDE 4 for 2 monitors with sax2 (although the resolution was bad).On 11.2 neither SAX2 nor KRandR seem to work. The KDE User Guide says that a driver supporting version 1.2 is necessary. However the nvidia driver for eForce FX Go5200 seems to support only version 1.1.Is there a way to use both monitors with SUSE 11.2? I am quite desperate since for my work using only 1 monitor is definitely a handicap.

Aug 10, 2010I'm experiencing problems with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx x64 Desktop Edition and my nVidia GT200b [GeForce GTX 275]. First of all, when Lucid Lync came out, everything worked perfectly out of the box. I even had all the shiny desktop effects with Compiz. Then, let's say around mid-june, after installing the latest updates Compiz didn't work anymore. So I had to use no visual effects anymore. OK not the end of the world I assumed. But since Kernel 2.6.32-24 came with the updates, I couldn't even get X running again. Everytime my machine boots up, I get a X error message that no matching screen could be found. I checked the xorg.conf, even ran 'nvidia-xconfig', removed xorg.conf and tried it again, etc. etc. I can't get it to run with the latest updates. So I chose to stick with 2.6.32-22, where I at least have a running X server.
Btw., yes I am using the recommended hardware acceleration driver from System->Administration->Hardware drivers (which is btw. the only selectable one, there is no other one). It says "version current".
Why is support for the GeForce GTX 275 dropping? Or what am I doing wrong?
My enabled updates: lucid-security, lucid-updates, lucid-proposed. I do not have backports enabled.

I am new, and not very good with ubuntu. I downloaded a driver version 185, and installed, after installing which, I could not get any display at all. After trying to repair, in vain, I had to reinnstall the whole system.
I really need the correct drivers. I can see a version 190.42 of nvidia drivers, but that doesnt list my device model number, and so im not sure, whether this should work. Someone, also please tell me how do I repair, if I mess while trying this driver out?

Oct 13, 2010tried to install drivers for FX 5500 today, the one that Ubuntu recommended (173) and the current version (260). Both installs failed when it tried to set up python-support. Returned an exit status of "10". I don't know what that means. I could really use some help, because I just installed UT2K4, and without the driver, I can't play it. I'm running the latest release, as noted in the thread title. Dunno if it helps, but it was a clean install, because an alternate iso upgrade failed and mucked up 10.04.
