I installed fedora 15 and i m not able to change the monitor resolution. if I open the display settings I just get the choice between 1024x768 and 800x600.
View 3 RepliesI have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on my Qosmio Toshiba laptop.
At the completion of the install i had about a page of errors. But it boots up ok. However when i tried to install Visual Paradigm on the system i found that every time i ran the executable i get an error message saying access denied. Found away around this problem on a VP forum so managed to get the program to work with the non-install version.
The problem i am having now is i can save files. I have checked the permissions of the vpworkshop folder (properties > permissions) and all permissions are currently set to '---'. If i try and change them to 'wr'. It just reverts back to '---'.
I know its a long shot, but still...
Is it possible to change size of boot and swap without doing a fresh install?
this is how my volume dist is like - root -30 gb, boot 200 mb, swap 8gb, home - 110 gb
my laptop is an amd turion dual core TL-58, with 2 gb ram and 160 gb hard disk...
and i want to change it to what is generally recommended ie boot to 500mb or 1 gb and swap to 4 gb..
the remaining can be added to home...
I'm totally new to Linux. Got a fresh installation of Fedora 10 x86_64 on my HP dv7-1070el notebook with previously installed Vista Ultimate 64bit. I have 2 HDDs. The OS are installed on different hard-disks. The problem: I've chosen to put the boot loader on the first sector [...] on the second HDD (/sdb5) where Fedora is installed, not on MBR /sda1 where is Vista. Now, when I reboot, it goes straight to Vista and I expected to be asked for a boot choice.
What I want is to start using Fedora and to be able to choose which OS I want to use when I start my notebook. I'm not sure I made myself clear since I'm not too familiar with all terms so please correct me so I can learn . This is what I remember from installation. Everything else went great, no installation problems. If there's no way to get the dialog of which OS I want to boot, tell me the command for booting Vista when GRUB starts.
I'm still on GNOME with 800x600 resolution but I can't switch to 1024x768 because there is no 1024x768 option under resolution settings.My monitor is 17" so 1024x768 should work fine.My graphic card is integrated GeForce 6150.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently bought an F12 DVD (from a UK supplier) which I took to be a "full distribution". But looking back on the web site it was not described as such. After booting I selected the Replace Existing Linux System option and it listed the installation of 204 packages - much smaller than the 933 packages when I installed F9.
The kernel is now FEDORA (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE)
My problem is that I am now faced with a very intimidating terminal. I am sure the installation did not offer a graphical interface. I have tried to get Gnome running by following the Installation Guide :-
1) 7.4.2 Booting into a Graphical Environment
I type in -gedit /etc/inittab
and I get back --bash: gedit: command not found
2) 15.3 Switching to a Graphical Login
I type -yum group install "GNOME Desktop Environment"
Response -Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again.
3) Again under 15.3 - bullet point 3)
Type -/etc/inittab
Response --bash: /etc/inittab: permission denied
I have now run out of ideas. I'm sure it is not supposed to be difficult but I don't understand the implications of the command line responses. I really don't want to be condemned to a win dependency.
I've borrowed a copy of 11.4 DVD install disc from someone at work, everything went fine install wise. Except Grub taking control, which I didn't ask it to, but easy fix with yast, problem is firstly my graphics resolution is wrong, but I'm trying to work that one out myself as it always seems to be happening with distros I use on my machine. The weird thing is my desktop blinks! Every 10secs or so the whole screen goes blank and then reappears? I thought it might be the wrong refresh rate, but that's at 60Hz which is correct, would it be the resolution problem?

I was trying to running diagnostic's from Opensuse, but the blinking was getting on my nerves and I'm not familiar with a non Debian based OS......yet! I've got compiz and all running on the hardware in my Ubuntu install after editing the xorg.conf, could I simply copy that to my Opensuse install?
I recently finished a fresh reinstall of Fedora 11 on my ASUS EeePC 1000HA today. Once I rebooted, it asked for the usual "first time user thing" and I proceeded. After that screen, I was brought to the loging manager, so I logged in, and was presented with my destkop. I fired up the terminal, added myself to the sudoer's file and did a "sudo yum update" but was given the following error (the beginning of the text got cut off due to how lengthy the update list was): [URL].

View 8 Replies View RelatedI decide to install F15 (other machines run F14) and after a pretty smooth install and reboot, I try to login and get the message "Oh no, something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again". But no matter how long I try, I keep getting this message. Then I go to crt-alt-F2, and try to "yum install gnome-panel". Then it shows that I don't have any network connection at all, even though I did install my network. I'm thinking of installing F14 now.

Does anyone know what boot parameters to use or how to get Fedora to start the install process in a resolution other than the "Optimum resolution"? resolution=640x40 vga=ask. These do not work. They set the debug display but when the graphical portion starts it defaults to the "optimum resolution" and the message displays "Cannot Display This Video Mode". As you consider the answer, think this is a new computer, blank hard disk, etc. I am installing Fedora 10. Tried 11 and Vista seems less buggy, prefer 10 or 9.

I just downloaded the F11 x64 DVD iso, and I when I try to install it, after the media check screen, Anaconda starts it load, but it says "X failed to start, falling back to text mode" (or something like that).
The install goes through (in text mode), and all that gets installed is the basic environment.
My specs:
- AMD X2 Phenom II 550 Callisto
- 4gb DDR2 800 memory
- 1tb Samsung SATA / 100gb Western Digital SATA
- 2x XFX Geforce 9600gt 1gb
- ASRock K10N780SLIX3-WIFI motherboard

View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running F11 and am trying to replace it with a fresh install of F13, using the same partitioning layout. I downloaded the F13 i386 DVD ISO using bit torrent. (The sha256sum of my downloaded ISO matches the reference sha256sum value.) I'm trying to do the fresh install of this ISO from hard drive (without burning a DVD). Last summer I did the same procedure of installing a downloaded DVD ISO from HDD when replacing F9 with F11. The installer (Anaconda 13.42) proceeds to the point where I specify my custom partitioning layout. It then prompts me about storing a boot loader. Shortly after I reply to that, the installer gets an "unhandled exception".

The only nonstandard thing I did was the following. According to the F13 installation guide, for installation from HDD the file "install.img" from within the ISO files must be copied to a directory named "images". The F13 installation guide gives the following procedure:
mount -t iso9660 /path/to/Fedora13.iso /mnt/point -o loop,ro
cp -pr /mnt/point/images /path/images/
umount /mnt/point
Instead, I used "Archive Manager" to extract "install.img" from my DVD ISO. I copied it to a directory named "images".
I've installed F13 on a DELL computer. Everything works fine except that under KDE menu if I click on 'shutdown', I have the confirmation windows but the computer never shutdown. Same issue with the the logout button. If I want to stop my commuter I have to open a terminal and type " shutdown now" or "halt".

When I re-enter my user info, it tells me that there's already a folder created for that user. After rebooting, I'm back to that screen. Does anyone know what's going on here?

I have just fresh installed Fedora 15 over my (very) old copy of Fedora 11. I wanted to play around with Linux.
Anyway, when I log in, I get the "Oh no! Something has gone wrong" (like I stated).
I have just installed Fedora 15. I have tried both the desktop edition and the LXDE Spin on an AMD X2 64 5800+. It's hard-drive so I select "Use All Space", meaning all the partitions will be removed and recreated. The installation completes normally, when I reboot without the CD, I get the screen with blinking cursor same as [URL]... Adding intel_iommu=off to the grub.conf did not help. I presume the default installer works correctly however the installed boot configuration puzzles me. The boot partition is /dev/sda1 and the mount point is /boot. If boot from the cd after the installation, I mount:

Is this how it should be? This is me being new to Linux probably, but I should /boot contain the boot information if that's where the boot partition is mounted? Is there any way to "turn on debugging" so I can get a better insight on what's not happening?
Fc11 installed well, it was related to a particular sata driver perhaps The installation went well up to the reboot, and then displayed the message saying that LogVol00 was not found. 3ware sata raid card, usually it installs without error

All the hard drives are hooked to the High Point controller. It recognizes all of them that have power hooked up and read/writes to them. Two have 98SE installs, the third is where I'm trying to install Fedora 12 to get away from some problems I'm having with 98SE.
The BIOS is set up to boot from the "SCSI device" which means it's booting from the High Point controller. The High Point lets me set a boot mark, which, when set to the Fedora drive, yields the disk boot failure no matter what I do to it.
after fresh f12 install says reboot & i do... no boot menu, boots xp. there's probably a solution, but i don't know it. someone know how to get around this?
View 10 Replies View RelatedAfter installing Fedora 15 from LiveUSB and rebooting it just hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left of the screen. If it's reached grub, it isn't responding to any commands, and mashing several key combinations (such as ctrl-alt-f1) will produce a beep usually emitted only by the BIOS (hinting that it may never be making its way to grub).
The only particularly interesting thing about the install is that by default it wanted to boot itself from the MBR on my primary-master (Windows) disk. Instead I selected the option to boot from "the first partition in sdb1", which is my primary-slave (Linux) disk, (the first partition being /boot). This way I can change which OS boots by changing the boot order in my BIOS, and so avoiding bootloader wars.

I have tried changing the menu.1st file and the vga=0x301 mode sticks until the system begins to boot and then resets to a higher resolution. This system does not have X, or Sax2 so no go on those options. This is OpenSuse 11.3 x64.

My monitor is a Priceton Graphics VF912. I cannot find ANY information on this monitor on the internet as far as its Horizontal Sync and Refresh Rate. I know it is capable of at least 60 Hz because I have an identical one attached to my windows machine.
Someone please help. I have tried everything: running the xconfigurator tool, the nvidia xconfig tool, maually editing the xorg.conf and adding the resolutions myself and nothing works. Also xranr does not detect my monitor's capability correctly either. My system is an HP xw4300 with all stock parts except hard drive which is 500 gb sata. Using the stock "nv" driver does not give me resolutions above 800 x 600
How I can get Chainload into Grub2 to show up as an entry in Grub, I just installed Karmic a week ago on my laptop. I want to set Grub to use this theme. I'm using a netbook, how would I change grub's resolution to 1024x600.
