Red Hat / Fedora :: Cannot Change Resolution Above 640 X 320?

I am running Fedora Core 10 x64-bit. My video card is Quadro NVS 285 and the driver installed correctly. However I cannot change resolution above 640 x 320. Even adding resolutions higher than 640 x 320 such as 1600 x 1200 does not work so I created a new xorg.conf with the nvidia tool

My monitor is a Priceton Graphics VF912. I cannot find ANY information on this monitor on the internet as far as its Horizontal Sync and Refresh Rate. I know it is capable of at least 60 Hz because I have an identical one attached to my windows machine.
Someone please help. I have tried everything: running the xconfigurator tool, the nvidia xconfig tool, maually editing the xorg.conf and adding the resolutions myself and nothing works. Also xranr does not detect my monitor's capability correctly either. My system is an HP xw4300 with all stock parts except hard drive which is 500 gb sata. Using the stock "nv" driver does not give me resolutions above 800 x 600

When I boot my computer I get this message: Warning Pc video resolution is out of range Change setting to recommended resolution 1280x1024 @60mh So I hit ctrl alt f1 I typed in Sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg Nothing happens. It's been very frustrating because with everything that I've looked up it says that it's suppose to guide me through something. I desperately need my computer for school.

I am running fedora 11 live cd on a work computer waiting on a new harddrive. Ran knoppix and Gos 3.1 fine. they start at 800x600 but can relatively easily be changed to much better but fedora likes this really low resolution on the monitor 640x480. In Gos I unhide screens and graphics and change it there but fedora doesn't seem to have this basic setting utility. Where is it in fedora or its equivilant. The basic monitor setting only offers the 1 option and even this box is not fully visible, ok and cancel are cut off at the bottom. Going back to Gos for now, though someone managed to crash it while surfing the net. mATX Via chipset p4m800 s3 unichrome graphics. linux loads vesa drivers instead of s3 unichrome drivers.

I'm still on GNOME with 800x600 resolution but I can't switch to 1024x768 because there is no 1024x768 option under resolution settings.My monitor is 17" so 1024x768 should work fine.My graphic card is integrated GeForce 6150.

Just installed F11. Been totally frustrated all day and all night with resolutions and DNS bugs. I installed system-config-display so I can get my video working properly. However, my monitor says it's out of range only on the login screen. How can I change the resolution for the login screen to match that of my working environment?

How do you get to the place to change the screen resolution through the menus in Fedora 13? When I couldn't find it, I ran gnome-display-properties, changed the resolution, restarted, and when it started back up the resolution was not changed!

I have install Fedora 13 on my machine (Intel 815 Chipset with graphic card of nVidia GeForce 256), but the default resolution of text console wound have be about 1024x768. I intend this machine as a simple samba server (without X Window), so just a low-resolution monitor will work with it. However, this monitor can't work with the resolution higher than 800x600, I have to change the resolution lower. I have searched the solutions for this problem on Google. Most of them thought I should fix /boot/grub/grub.conf, append "vga=769", "vga=771" or even "vga=ask" to the end of the line start with the word "kernel". I have tried but all of them doesn't work. Just like Fedora 13 use the value from the other configure file overwrite the one list in grub.conf. As everyone knows, if I installed and launched X Window on my machine, I could query and change the resolution with command "xrandr". Are there some similar ones that can work on text console?

i have a Fedroa12 installed as a VM, and my problem is that i can't change the resolution higher than 800x600 .
i am trying to do that with an Xorg.conf file. here is what i did:
1. telinit 3
2. Xorg -configure (root user)
3. cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
4. inside xorg.conf i have added the following:
under the "screen" section i have added:
DefaultDepth 24 then under the "SubSection" of Depth 24, i have added:
Modes "1680x1050" "1028X768" "800x600"
but then whenever i am try to start the X, it fails with the following message: no screen found...
since i am doing it for studying only, how to configure properly the xorg.conf file ?

it will NEVER let me change the screen resolution to 1440x900. It never gives me the option. I then spend hours looking for fixes, making Xconf files and editing them to no avail. The same is true for Fedora 15 (Beta). what can i do to get the 1440x900 option in my "Display" list in Fedora.

This is my 2nd day on linux (yesterday I installed u-b-u-n-t-u but I couldn�t get my video drivers to work, so today, I installed Fedora 15 and everything is fine). I cannot change my resolution guys. I have installed the nvidia drivers but still; I cannot go higher than 1024x768. All I want is 1280x1024 or higher. I'm using Fedora 10 x86_64 with an ATI Radeon Mobility x1400 video card. Before installing fglrx & compiz, the text console (while booting up) was shown at 1280x800 resolution (laptop widescreen). After installing fglrx & compiz the console would only show up as 640x480 resolution. My resolution in X starts as 1280x800 without any problem. I realize that you can use vga=xxx as a kernel argument but this only works with NON-widescreen resolutions. I require that it be set to a widescreen resolution like it was before the fglrx & compiz installation.

I have tried this with many different configurations, however, I believe that the scroll bar that shows the progress of the boot is preventing it from changing successfully. I don't know how to switch it off. X is not installed. No gui, only tui.

I installed fedora 14 on Dell laptop but I am unable to change resolution on my laptop also video quality is poor , I think proper drivers are not installed. I am new to Fedora, so probably missing something.

Ok, I'm sick of Grub2. It's a total mess that is needlessly complicated in the worst fashion imaginable. (Yes, I've read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2, it doesn't help.) I can't understand Grub2 developers thinking (maybe they're aliens?) and, quite frankly, I just don't care anymore. how to change resolution for textmode terminals (tty1, tty2, ...)? I don't want to read any more [censored] about gfxpayload and how it's supposed to work. Please don't respond if you can't provide an example config that simply just works.
[Edit/SOLVED]: No longer an issue in Lucid Lynx for me. See this HOWTO. Note that 1280x1024 isn't the only option. You can use any resolution supported by VBE of your video card. Use vbeinfo command in Grub shell to see the list of available display modes.

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 server on VM. Installation went well and now im trying to change the console resolution. I have changed the grub.cfg file and added the "vga=791", but after rebooting I get a black window (on the vm), nothing written nothing is happening.

I have Redhat 7.0 and kde 2.1.1 I've been looking for a way to change the resolution. I've found many ways to do it, but nothing can fix my problem. 1.If you configure your monitor in the KDE Control center under peripherals you may be able to fix this problem. There are two items in peripherals, mouse and keyboard. I don't see anything about resolution.
I can simply do it like this in KDE 3.4: right click the desktop, choose "configure desktop", then "display", then choose one of the resolutions in the dropdown menu. I see configure desktop, but there is no "display" item**you could change settings in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. There is no xorg.conf file in that folder.

playing with debian I find that I have no answer when I try to resize my console if I wish to use it without a GUI. Are there something that could resize the screen ? In this moment it seems to be 640x480 and it could be better if the resolution could be 800x600. I have tryed to modified /etc/grub/00_header

Ever since I installed Debian, my monitor keep saying: "Input Signal Out of Range Change Settings to 1600x900 - 60Hz". So I thought it a problem of the screen resolution, so I have been trying to edit my xorg.conf file, but it doesn't seem to work at all. And this is my settings.

I was running my Acer V193 monitor at 1280x1024 resolution on KDE 4.3.1. Then after someone else used the computer the resolution changed to 1024x768 and I am unable to change it. Yast recognizes the monitor correctly, but when I run Sax2 it will not change it back to 1280x1024. It accepts that setting but when I start it again it is set at 1024x768. My xorg.conf indicates...

I just installed ubuntu 9.10 32-bit on my parents computer. My dad was having this weird problem where it would only randomly allow him to log in every few tries. Let's say every 1 out of 12 tries.
I believe I have figured what is keeping him from logging in. Only on his user is there an issue with logging in. Only on his desktop have I turned the screen resolution down. From 1152 to 1024.
The usual sequence goes like this -
- I choose his user
- I enter his correct password
- It appears to be logging in, half the log in sound happens and the splash screen runs for 6 or so seconds
- The splash screen flickers between a 1152 and 1024 resolution
- Reverts back to the log in screen, his desktop is never visible.
any ideas on how to fix this? The computer in question is a Compaq Presario circa 2000-2001 if that makes any difference. I have not looked into the video card make yet

I'm running Karmic with an NVIDIA GeForce 6600, normally at 1280x1024. Just during the past week, the resolution has started spontaneously changing to 1024x768, just after I type the password to login. I get the Ubuntu splash screen with the animated light thingy underneath, then the screen flickers and it goes to 1024x768. I have tried changing driver but this has no effect.
I then have to change it manually using the Nvidia X Server settings utility, which is fine. I can then save X settings into /etc/x11/xorg.conf but next startup it does exactly the same again. I have seen a lot of posts in which Ubuntu leaves users stuck in a low res, or even tries to put them into an unsupported res, but nothing quite like this. Is there a Gnome setting somewhere that defines screen res at startup??
