I am trying to upgrade from F11 to F12.Using Preupgrade, everything went well and then it asked me to Reboot. Anaconda started then says something about updating some files then the screen goes blank.
View 14 RepliesI am trying to upgrade RH9 to F10. I have downloaded dvd iso image i386. The SHA1 integrity check passes. The installer fails media check due to "errors". I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway. If I bypass the media check I get the message : Running anaconda 11.4.1.62 the Fedora system installer - please wait.....

you need more space on the following filesystems: 1089 M on unfortunately not more information displayed. only exit possible. Any experiences with this kind of behaviour? Many thanks for any feedback.
I downloaded the Fedora respin DVD from [URL]. I burned the image and tried to upgrade my existing RussianFedora 10 distro. However, even after the successful completion of upgrade process, I boot into the same old RussianFedora 10. I would, also, like to mention that the upgrade process seemed to be unusually fast, it took only 15 mins for the complete process!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently decided to install ubuntu netbook remix 10.10 to my Toshiba NB200. I was using windows and I wanted to completely erase them. I burned the USB, I followed every single instruction the site had, and even though the installation seemed to work, and a message to reboot my computer appeared at the end, the installation finally fails. When I reboot, the only thing I get is a black screen with an underscore at the top left corner. I tried the installation four to six times and even tried older versions as well but all I get is the black screen.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to update my OS from Opensuse 11.2 to 11.3 using the installation DVD (checked OK). Everything is OK during the installation process until the message "System is going to reboot" is displayed with a countdown : when the countdown is finished, the screen becomes black and the screensaver starts, but the system does not reboot. When I reboot manually, after selecting "Opensuse 11.3 desktop" on the first menu, the screen becomes black and the screensaver starts.
So the installation seems incomplete and I do not know how to finalize it. When I select the failsafe option on the first menu, it seems to work but some behaviours are quite "strange"... When I choose update instead of installation at the beginning, the behaviour is the same.
I do not know if it is linked but the firmware tests started from the installation DVD show the following errors :
Memory tests are OK.
I'm installing 10.4 x64 on a Dell PowerEdge R610 in a RAID 1 configuration and the install goes fine until I have to reboot the server to finish the install. On reboot after about a minute it gives the error.We've tried letting GRUB manually configure itself at the end of the install before we reboot and we've also pointed it to /dev/sba partition which is what should be the boot partition.In the code tag it's ALERT! /dev/mapper/mysql(one)-root.... the L and 1 look the same.I've got 3 of these server to get setup and running as part of our back end and network restructuring and have been stuck at this point on the first one since Friday.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 (and tried 10.04.2 as well) from Wubi under Windows 7 64-bit. When I reboot after installing it through Windows, I go to Ubuntu and the installation completes. Then it reboots again to finish the install of the OS. When I boot into Ubuntu now, grub does not appear. Instead, some initramfs stuff comes up in a console with no GUI and says some error stuff about root devices. I read that grub updates cause problems, but the installation never finished and therefore I was never able to go into Ubuntu to lock grub packages, etc. I've run into this error on multiple fresh installs.

It actually cause the default interface (eth0) to fail as well, I must manually go in and remove the configuration for the eth:0:0 and restart the network to get it running again. How do I successfully add a Virtual interface to Fedora 11 that will stick when rebooted.

At the end of preupgrade & upgrade a reboot was called for. After reboot, the only choice that appears in the boot screen is ... Upgrade to Fedora 12 (Constantine). The only thing to edit after typing 'e' is ... kernel /upgrade/vmlinuz preupgrade Repo=HD::/var/cache/yum/preupgrade->
initrd /upgrade/initrd.img
If I allow it to boot to "Upgrade" it tries to do a fresh install.
P.S. This was a lot of typing to do on an IPhone
I've installed 10.04 on two different PC's (using two different live cd's) and after updating the software and rebooting the same error came up: in both cases the computer start and then a black screen appears asking me to enter the user and password like those old DOS systems (that is: ALL graphics are gone leaving me with nothing but a useless text prompt).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried to upgrade Fedora 13 to Fedora 14 using preupgrade. The upgrade seem to go OK, I didn't see any errors. But when it did the final reboot all I get is a blank screen. I rebooted in single user mode and saw that /etc/rc5.d/S99local -> ../rc.local is the last script executed. I edited rc.local and added 'echo "got here"' at the end and rebooted. It did print "got here" so I know all scripts were executed for init 5, it didn't get hung anywhere along the bootup. Why I'm not getting the login screen?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn trying to upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, the installation fails when checking software channels. The error basically says that there are breaks, broken depends and unmet dependencies. Yet Package Manager shows that there are no broken packages and mostly everything is running OK except for the Suspend option which doesn't work in 10.04 on a good number of various laptops. I am using an IBM Thinkpad R51 laptop with 1.5 GHz and 512 MB RAM. I have never had a problem like this with any Ubuntu upgrade in the past. How can I get past this problem and upgrade to 10.10? Log files available upon request. If log files needed, Someone on Launchpad said it's because I have third party software installed. But, this never happened before with previous Ubuntu upgrades.

I have a problem with LVM. My installation of Fedora 13 is on 2 SATA hard disks, which are set as /dev/sda and /dev/sdb. On sda there are two partitions (boot and a physical part of the volume group) and on sdb is only one partition (other physical part of the volume group). Both physical parts of the volume group are used for one volume group and the VG is splittet into multiple logical groups. The system works and all seems to be ok. But I saw a strange thing on last reboot:
The device /dev/sda was not recognized during the boot sequence, instead the system has build a device /dev/md126p1 with the same geometry and partitions and it has the same disk id as sda.
The volume group is also ok, the system boots into the desktop environment, but the system-config-lvm says that /dev/sda is not initialized and the volume group consists of sdb and md126p1. fdisk -l knows three devices (sda, sdb and md126p1). I think, that is the reason for my problems with preupgrade, which stops after the reboot with a LVM problem (root not found). Can I correct that without data loss?
I upgraded from fedora 14 to fedora 15 yesterday. I live in India (IST) which is GMT +05:30. Every time I boot, my system clock increases its time by 5 and a half hours. For example, system clock on my machine is now Wednesday May 26,2011 22:44. If I were to reboot now, the time I would get is Thursday May 27, 2011 04:14. How do I correct this?

But at the next and each subsequent cold boot the BIOS reports "Your system last boot fail or post interrupted Please enter setup to load default and reboot". The board is an asus P5N-D. I press F1 to blow past the error and all is well until the next cold boot. Restarts are fine, no errors at all.
View 12 Replies View RelatedInstalled v9 a couple of weeks back and have been causally mucking about with it since. I managed to get XP and ubuntu running as a dual boot system (which was an achievement ).
Anyway, i've upgraded to 10.04 - and already loving it. However... my XP o/s no longer boots. It use to prior to the upgrade. Now, when the XP o/s is selected from GRUB2, I just get a series of bleeps and a flashing _.
Now, I am a complete novice. I actually have no idea where to even begin trouble shooting GRUB2 (and i'm assuming its a problem with GRUB).
It seemed to upgrade the first round and looks like it booted back into Ubuntu (I had Purple background) and asked for updates and I installed them and on reboot I lose video when entering desktop. I see the initial purple Ubuntu loading screen, but when it goes away I lose video completely and my monitor says it's unplugged.
I tried the grub nomodeset without luck. I am at the desktop in safe mode. If someone can tell me how to edit a file to enable the graphics again, I'd be forever grateful. Sorry if this was answered, but search only gave me help with the Intel 850 graphics problems and not what I was seeking.
Dual boot Windows XP SP3 & Ubuntu 9.10 on a single hdd, w/2 partitions. Booted to Ubuntu and upgraded online. XP boots fine, but Ubuntu, not so much; a msg about /dev not found, followed by a shell login prompt. I suspect a grub problem, but haven't been able to find a definitive answer. Since I can at least boot XP, I do not want to do anything that would screw that up and leave me with no bootable OS. I did the "upgrade" shortly after 10.04 was released. Is there a way to reliably fix this w/o possibly screwing up my ability to boot XP, the only OS I can boot? I have no Ubuntu 10.04 disk, as I used their upgrade online option.

First I get a warning, that probably isn't important: "Third party sources disabled
Some third party entries in your sources.list were disabled. You can re-enable them after the upgrade with the 'software-properties' tool or your package manager."
After the upgrade I get this:
"Could not install the upgrades The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).
Upgrade complete The upgrade has completed but there were errors during the upgrade process."
The console has about six messages similar to this, all complaining about the vnc-e package:
"warning, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/available' near line 10992 package 'vnc-e': error in Version string '4.4.3_r16583': invalid character in version number"

I just upgraded to ubuntu 11.04 but now all the kernels fail to boot. The resolution of grub changed and the older kernels are put into a 'previous kernels' folder. The most recent kernel halts at the message '* Stopping userspace bootsplash [ OK ]' and the previous kernels fail with the message 'Unlink after no-irq. Controller is probably using the wrong IRQ',
or show the background of the login screen with just a white box.
I think the cause is that I have an ATI graphics card (HD Radeon 3650), because on my 2 other computers ubuntu upgrades fine and they have NVIDEA graphics cards.
As a last resort I tried installing different distro's like Linux Mint but it also gived me the 'unlink after no-irq' message.
I did normal net upgrade after the official release of 10.10 yesterday evening. On reboot I get a frozen system with a blank screen. Checking via safemode, I find it is stuck when 'checking battery state' but this is a desktop machine! Apt update, uninstalling ubuntu-desktop, reinstalling ubuntu-desktop, etc.

Installation program correctly initializes graphics - all installation completes with automatic configuration - gives no option for sax2 to run. Then Suse does not comes up or the x does not comes up or display is not showing anything. I can switch to Vista and Vista boots works from grub menu. An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

I previously had Ubuntu 9.x and Windows 7 installed at my laptop after I decided to upgrade Ubuntu to 10.04.
After the upgrade finished, now at the boot selection menu I am able to select Windows 7, but after it starts it tries to fix some errors and says that it's unable to load. Ubuntu 10.04 loads just fine.
