Ubuntu Installation :: During Upgrade To 10.10 Window Manager Crashed

Oct 10, 2010

I started the upgrade to 10.10 and now the upgrade process is trying to get some input in the orange window. Problem is I can't bring that window to the front because metacity crashed. When I try to start metacity from a console it dumps core. How do I continue the upgrade?

Ubuntu Installation :: Attempted To Upgrade To 10.04 Through Update Manager - Computer Crashed

May 8, 2010

So I attempted to Upgrade 2 days ago from 9.10 to 10.04. I started the upgrade and left my computer alone as it said it would take several hours. When I returned to check on it, It told me the the installation had failed and it was attempting to roll back to the previous installation. Afterward I couldn't access anything on my computer. I'd click a icon and it wouldn't do anything. I manually restarted it and was greeted with a message that it couldn't boot because there was no mount specified.

Since I had backed up all my files I tried to just reinstall ubuntu. However even after I reinstalled I'm greeted with the same message.

Ubuntu Installation :: PC Crashed During Upgrade To 10.04

May 5, 2010

I was upgrading to 10.04 through the update manager and my pc froze during the install, and I mean dead stop. It's happened a few times since I've come home from college for the summer, but I thought it was just the game I was playing or something so I wasn't concerned.

Now when I try to boot it gives me errors mounting /media/1 and /media/2 and various other others regarding NTFS (yet linux doesnt use NTFS so I'm confused...). When I hit any button that's not a letter (Esc, Delete, Backspace, etc.) it flashes over to a screen that says 10.04 with 4 dots underneath. Similar to what the loading screen should be, yet obviously not the loading screen.

Is there anyway I can install/upgrade this system through a LiveCD or something similar? I can't boot to Linux at all now, but I can boot to the Windows partition on the same hdd.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 - 11.04 Crashed On Upgrade ?

Apr 29, 2011

I was minutes away from finishing my upgrade and the screen went black and the mouse stopped moving. I left it for about 10 minutes to see if it would recover but nothing happened. I had to restart and now I've got nothing, not even a terminal prompt. If I start normally, I get a blinking white cursor (I cannot type) that never goes away and if I try recovery mode It hangs.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 To 11.04 Upgrade Crashed

May 6, 2011

I have run 10.04 for some time with no issues. I was presented with the system option to upgrade to 11.04. This I did but the upgrade crashed out halfway through the install process, with a 'too many errors to continue upgrade, system maybe unstable'.

On re-boot I am now presented with;

And the system waits for the selection.

So my question is - how to recover this ?

I can get to a shell (#) and see files on the drive (using ls) so I know the drive hasn't died.

Ubuntu Installation :: System Crashed While Trying To Upgrade To 10.04

Mar 24, 2010

I was trying to upgrade to 10.04 (from 9.10 x86_64)when the update manager crashed without any warning or errors. it happened while the packages were being installed, as a result of which i could no longer login into gnome. so i logged in using the terminal and since i had cleaned the cache before upgrading i ran sudo -i dpkg *.deb (there were a large number of deb files in it, so i thought those were the upgrade packages) but the process couldn't be completed. it said that there were too many errors. after rebooting, gnome doesn't start and i can see lucid development version in the terminal. it also didn't detect my usb keyboard.do i have to reinstall ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Crashed During 10.10 Upgrade

Nov 9, 2010

I was upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 when my laptop crashed due to a HW issue not related to upgrade. But now when I start:

1) The laptop, it boots up till the point GDM log in screen is displayed without any log-in option. The system does not respond to any keyboard or mouse actions.
2) when I try to recover (recovery mode), the boot process comes til a point where it says "Console: switching to color frame buffer device 180x56"

And the prompt just stays there. It does not not drop to terminal. When I choose an older option in the grub, I do get dropped to initramfs prompt. How to restore my machine. re-instillation is not an option as I have some data I need in the home directory.

I was upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 and the computer completely froze and I restarted it thinking I would be able to restart the update where I left off (I'm new to ubuntu). However when I restart I can't get anywhere, if I boot normally the ubuntu screen comes up and then it stops with the computer name in the middle of the screen and thats it (can't do anything i can't get into shell via ctrl-alt-f1 etc..) if i use the recovery from the grub menu it loads a bunch of things then stops i can't type anything but I can switch using ctrl-alt-f1 and ctrl-alt-f7 but I don't see anything except:

under ctrl-alt-f7: the last lines read

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 10.04 To 10.10b Crashed With GError, Broke System

Oct 17, 2010

i wanted to upgrade my ubuntu system to meerkat beta via update manager like i upgraded it the last 5+ times.

a bug showed up that i can recall from updating files previously: some software installtions via update manager triggered the programm nicotine+ (i think is was something like man-lib or man-db that, when called by the installtion programm, would trigger nicotine too). since i can close that nicotine+-window and the installation process isnt bothered any further i didnt mind.

now with this upgrade, i had to close nicotine+ around 5 times since it got triggered together with some of the files that got updated/installed in this upgrade.

and then what happened: GError something about an "unrecognized image file", it concerned a py file that was named "nicotine"...

so i waited for 10 mins and figured out that the update process had stopped. i couldnt resist and logged out, wanting to delete nicotine from my system and to reinitialize the upgrade. well, nothing works since then, grub only lets me choose different kernels which didnt help much as there was no way to startx.

my question is:

how can i reset this upgrade mess or bring this pending upgrade to an end? can i do an upgrade via network, based on the emergency shell that comes up in some kernel-recoverymodes? or should i burn a livecd, boot it and then do what? repair? try another upgrade? delete nicotine?

having 'consumed' ubuntu for years now i still wouldnt know what else to do then posting here.

Ubuntu Installation :: Screen Resolution Crashed - Could Not See The Right Part Of The Same "nvidia" Window

Jul 30, 2010

I was wandering around the system parameters and saw that there was an option to activate a non-open nvidia driver for my Asus Emachine EL1200 with Ubuntu 8.04 install (pre-installed, worked fine for a year now). So I did. However, when I restarted, my screen resolution was changed to 800*600 or so, no good. Although I could not see the right part of the same "nvidia" window, I managed to deactivate the driver. Regretfully when restarting the screen resolution was still 800*600. I thought it was 1440*900 for my Asus VK192S-B (checked it on internet) but it didn't work (did not check the refreshrate at that time). So I stared to fiddle around and stupidly accepted a 1280 * 800. As I said before the resolution is completely f***up now. I have about 4 copies of my desktop and the worst part is there are lines over it and I can not see what the windows say. I manage to get the resolution config screen, but can not get the right optios selected, working "blindfolded".

I looked at this helpful forum and identified the /etc/x11/xorg.conf file as the important file. Also I saw a xorg.conf.failsafe file with my original config! With the recovery cd of Asus I managed o set up a live session and actually can open the xorg.conf file and see the damned line with 1280*800. Regretfully the original /etc folder as well as the original home folder cannot be written in, or copied. Permission problems, as could be expected. I have some backup, but not of quite a lot of photos I uploadd from my camera recently. Reinstalling from scratch is fo the moment not an option.

Ubuntu :: Window Borders Keep Disappearing - Open Compiz Icon To Reload Window Manager?

Apr 23, 2010

I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).

Ubuntu Installation :: Flash Videos Lock Up Window Manager (kde Or Gnome)

Oct 18, 2010

I'm fairly decent Linux admin (ok, i've been paid to do it for the last 10 years now, maybe better than fair), however this problem has me stumped. Ever since i dist-upgraded to 10.10 playing flash videos longer than a minute will *sometimes* lock up my window manager. I am unable to click on other windows, or links in current window. If i open a terminal after starting the video i can still run commands in the terminal after its locked up, but not use the mouse in any form at all.

I can get to tty1 or any other console, kill flash, kill the browser, etc. Until i restart gdm or kdm it is still locked up however. I have tested with both kde and gnome. Tested with kdm and gdm. Tested with firefox and chrome (both use different installs of flash plugin - chrome brings its own). I created a new user on the system to test enviroment, no luck there. I eventually reinstalled yesterday with a fresh 10.10, and still I am having this problem. It *often* happens, but not always. Always on videos longer than about a minute at a guess, i have not timed it. Only ever happens on flash videos - ie ..... etc.

General :: Disallow Closing Last Emacs Window Via Window-Manager Close Button

Jul 8, 2011

I like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).

I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.

I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.

The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.

As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse

Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?

On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.

I did remake my minimal installation. My window manager produces no background picture else I did add someone. So i will do it using xorg-xli. I did find the (in other cases usual) xinitrc as /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc but in only refers to an other script

and the other script (/etc/X11/Xsession) does not include some usuable steps to include easily supplementary starting commands.

Where is to do that in Debian SID actually?

Ubuntu Installation :: No Window Decorations After Upgrade To 11.04?

Apr 28, 2011

I upgraded to 11.04 this morning, and I just flat out have zero window decorations which is a serious problem. This pretty much means that where windows happen to spawn is where they're stuck as I cannot move them ( aside from chrome which has its own I believe. )

This happens in Unity and Gnome-panel, fluxbox remains unaffected. I've completely removed, reinstalled unity and compiz several times now. That's not the problem. I've tried pointing the window decorator to /usr/bin/gtk-window-decorator but I might as well be shouting at a wall for all thats doing.

running unity --reset is have zero results as well. If it matters at all my video card is an ATI HD Radeon 4650, and yes I've uninstalled the proprietary driver and reinstalled it ( I get the same results with the open source driver ). Also if it makes any difference I'm running 64 bit.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade 9.10 To 10.04 - No Window Borders - No Buttons

May 3, 2010

I upgraded to 10.04 but problems started very quickly: I can see my desktop but when I start an application, there are no window borders or buttons to close/minimize that application! They just vanished. Also, opened windows don't appear on the taskbar, so I can't switch between windows, not even with ALT + TAB. The mouse isn't an arrow anymore, but a dark cross :s

Some specifications: Dell vostro 1000, ATI Radeon IGP Xpress 1150 (128mb shared), AMD64 Turion Here is what I did during the upgrade: everything default, except for once, when it asked me what to do with menu.lst (keep the old one or replace it with the newer version) I chose "replace" (default was to keep the old one). Can that be the reason?
