I'm trying to make Compiz activate at bootup, but I can't seem to get it to work. Basically, I'd like to make Compiz the default Window Manager in Kubuntu Lucid. How to accomplish this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI finally waded through all the graphical issues that have been reported when upgrading 10.10 to 11.04. I've managed to get the nvidia drivers installed and working (even though Jockey still reports that nvidia-current is installed but has not been activated).Whenever I log into an Ubuntu Classic session, GNOME defaults to using metacity as the window manager. In order to get my compiz effects working, I have to open a terminal and do "compiz --replace". After that, everything appears to work normally including on screen notifications, the cube, etc.
I've though of including a "compiz --replace" script in Startup Applications as a possible workaround, but is there a better way to handle not having compiz started by default? Is there something in gconf-editor or similar that I can edit in order to make GNOME default to using compiz?
I'm thinking about switching from Ubuntu 11.04 classic to Xubuntu 11.04. My main priority is to have compiz running.
However, though I know how to get it running, I want to be able to use it without using the

I know how to make it default in GNOME, however not in XFCE.
I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI would like to change my default window manager to sawfish. There are many instructions on the web to install sawfish, log out, then select sawfish, then log back in. This worked for me with karmic, but I'm not seeing any way to select a window manager during the lucid log in process. (Sawfish is running fine if I start it with "killall compiz && sawfish &" during an ongoing session.)

I am using the CompizConfig Setting Manager and want to activate Expo and other desktop extras. I have changed the System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects to extra but I still do not see Expo in ccsm. Do I need to install each plug in separately? I have included a screen shot of ccsm too.

The problem is, whenever I have compiz on and try to do anything in the file manager other than opening folders or files, such as cutting and pasting a file to a different folder, the whole system crashes. I have PCmanFM as well as Thunar, and both do this. How can I fix compiz to not do this? I am tired of having to turn off my computer, and risking losing data. For now I have compiz turned off, but is there a way to fix this and still use it?

How do I change the window manager? At the moment when my laptop finishes booting I'm presented with a username prompt. There are no other controls of any kind. After logging in I'm using the twm window manager. I would rather be using fvwm. I've tried putting "fvwm" in the files .xinitrc, .xsession, and .Xclients, to no avail.
I have googled this and all the answers involve doing something in Gnome (don't have it), KDE (don't have it), or the clicking a button in the session manager (no buttons). There must be some configuration or script somewhere that it is telling xdm to run twm, but so far I haven't found it.
(This started after I upgraded from Ubuntu 8 ) Everytime I enable desktop effects (system -> preferences -> appearance) compiz replaces the pretty New Wave window border with the ugly Emerald glass window border (custom border) that I used on Ubuntu 8.

The first thing I installed onto the LiveCD environment was CompizConfig Settings Manager. One question I have about it is... Why are so many of the plugins missing or limited?
In 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, there are many plugin options, and to be honest, I use a large quantity of them. For example, a plugin I use on 9.04 called "Reflection." For those of you who don't know, reflection allows you to show an image in window decorations and shadows. This plugin is completely missing from CompizConfig Settings Manager in 10.04!
Another example, this time a limited one, is the Animations plugin. It's missing the option for closing animation called "Burn." This is an animation I LOVE showing off and using, yet it's... Gone.
Am I missing something? Did I do something wrong on installing it? Is there a way to get the parts that are missing?

I just updated to Ubuntu 10.04 and am in love with it. However, when I tried to restore everything I had on my compiz, I realized that a integral part for me was missing. The "maximumize" feature is gone. This is the feature that makes a window fill up all the space it can without interfering with other windows, essentially making it like the windows 7 tiling feature, only better since you can do it with multiple windows and in any way you want. This was in the compiz settings manager in 9.10.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 on a Toshiba Satellite, Intel graphics card, a few days ago, and had no trouble accessing the CompizConfig Settings Manager. I changed a number of settings, and everything seemed to be working just fine. But two days ago, I noticed that the compiz effects (rotating desktop cube, minimize effect etc.) were gone; and when I now try to access the Settings Manager, I see a "Starting CompizConfig..." appear in the panel and linger for about five seconds; then it's gone. No settings manager, no error message.
The day that happened, I had (to the best of my memory) not installed any updates. I had, however, removed a bunch of applications through the Software Center. I had also launched Ubuntu Tweak and changed a couple of settings. The only option it showed, and shows, under 'Compiz Settings' was then (and still is): "Prerequisite Conditions" : "Install Advanced Desktop Effects Settings Manager". The box was checked. I have since unchecked and re-checked it, thereby uninstalling and re-installing the settings manager. But that hasn't changed anything.

Is there some way top stop the "blind effect" of compiz so that when you double click the top title bar of a window that it maximizes the window instead of the rolling up type effect? Also when i place my mouse on the top right of the screen it brings it to a choosing window type mode where you can pick which window you would like to open, is it possible to get this on the top left of the screen instead? Lastly when I use Kdebluetooth4 to send a file to my computer where does that file save to?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a pretty vanilla install of Ubuntu Lucid. I would like to change my default WM to sawfish. I have it installed, and it works routinely, I would just like to have it start automatically on log-in, rather than Lucid. A few sources have suggested that the way to do this is during log-in. They refer to a "session" I could choose, which would allow me to set the WM. I remember doing this in the past, but can't find such an option on the login page, now.
I have also experimented with changing .gconf/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/ using both gconf-editor and emacs. However, when I change "/usr/bin/compiz" to "/usr/bin/sawfish", log out, and log back in, I find that compiz starts anyway, and the setting in that file has been restored to compiz. Clearly, the gconf mechanism is getting the information from some other source.
