I just loaded F14 and want to use it as a file server. Not even certain where to get started. PC connected to the network, but can't see other PCs or Mac. thoughts?

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter doing updates a few days ago yumex stopped working. I started getting an error message when I try to run it, "no connected to a network". This is of course not true.
I've looked at yumex.conf and don't see anything wrong, and I downgraded the GTK2 packages from a post indicating a segfault issue with one of those packages.
yum works fine from the command line, so my system is fully updated.
I removed yumex and then reinstalled it with no joy.
I am trying to boot my laptop in text mode while it is not connected to a network. A message keeps popping up " eth0 ... negotiating". Does anyboy know how to turn it off? I tried "ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off. It still won't stop. I had tried editing /etc/sysconfig/network and turning off networking by NETWORKING=no. Still the same.
When I boot in the graphic mode, this problem of pesky message does not come out. I want to use the text mode since I will use my computer for editing documents and will be using vi only. In the text mode, when I plug it to a network, the persistent message stops but returns the minute I unplug the network. I want to use it unplug to the network since I will not have access to a network all the time. By the way, I am using Fedora 11. I am using a wired DSL network. My computer can do wireless but i had it disabled or switched off.

Unfortunately, when I put the PCMCIA card in, nothing happens. On Windows, a green light flashes even if the card is not connected to any network. At first I thought this might be a hardware issue, so I did #lspci and got:

Lo and behold, when I put a different unbranded Wireless PC Card in it works. I'm no expert in Networks, but to me this suggests a driver problem (i.e. the card is physically detected it just won't work). However, the correct driver was installed with ndisgtk and this was verified with #ndiswrapper -l, hence the confusion.
I'd be grateful if anyone else has had this problem/knows of this problem and is willing to share the solution with me/point me in the right direction. So far, Google has returned a few posts from a few years ago talking about patching kernels and manually building files etc (just before Prism54 became integrated into the Linux kernel).

The directory mounts successfully if I am already logged into the laptop with another account first but if I log on initially with the user who requires the mount the mount fails. I suspect the mount is taking place before my network connection is up, is it possible therefore, to delay the mount in fstab until the network is fully connected?

Afterwards my computer has no Internet connection although the network manager and the icon on the upper bar says that i am still connected. I tried editing the /etc/rc.local and /etc/resolv.conf as mentioned in other posts in here bit no luck so far.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Squeeze and I'm looking 3 days now for a solution in some weird problem. The NetworkManager Applet shows that there isn't connection although I am connected. The icon has this small "x" and when mouseover it says "No network conncection". Moreover when left clicking it, it says
"Wired Network Device not managed"
While I was looking for the solution a came across this post by an Ubuntu developer who says:network-manager-applet displays the connectivity state of network-manager's managed interfaces not every interface. So the title "network manager says disconnected but is connected and working" is actually misleading. The interface is connected and working but not from network-manager's point of view since it is not managing the interface. Additionally, in Lucid now network-manager applet displays nothing now for non-managed interfaces so is less misleading. You can check to see whether or not an interface is managed by network-manager by using the command line too nm-tool. You'll see "State: unmanaged" for unmanaged interfaces.

I just got Kubuntu loaded on my system, and this seems to be the closest forum for it. I have two simple questions:
1) What types of packages does Kubuntu use for installing programs and what's the package manager's name? (I don't remember from when I played with it last)
2) My desktop is not connected to a network (yet), so once I download the programs from a different computer and get them onto the desktop, how exactly do I get the programs loaded? I'm unsure if I can use the package manager to deal with files, or if it needs to pull from its own site.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have proftpd setup on my Aspire Revo (which I'm using as an HTPC) so that I can download files to my mac when I feel like watching in bed or whatever. I recently purchased a 1TB WD Elements to store my media. I have proftpd setup so that I can access every file on the computer. However, when I try to gain access to the Elements HD, I get an FTP error from Cyberduck that says:
/media/Elements: no such file or directory
Note that I have not formatted the drive or anything - just set it up straight out of the box. My media is loaded on to it, and XBMC reads the files fine. Is there a way I can enable the hard drive (or the OS) to share these files over FTP, or is this not possible?
i have setup Open VPN on Ubuntu 9.04, generated the key and have it running successfully on the server end. I download the open vpn client for windows, copied over the key ca and cert file and connected to the erver. All went well and the open vpn gui said its connected to the server (green comp icon in taskbar) and it said in a ballon it assigned me an ip of 10.8.0.6 it all looks good... BUT i have no vpn access... The virtual adapted in windows is not able to pull an actual IP/gateway and such...

I want to set up a home / file / torrent / web / print server at home. I am using a dell optiplex gx240 and my printer is a Epson dx8400. I was wondering if it is possible to use the printer and scanner connected to the server. Has anyone done this before? I hope to print from any computer in my house. Scanning would probably be the hardest part I guess.
View 2 Replies View RelatedLast night I was able to set up my server so that I can just connect vnc. I even was able to be connected at the log on screen so I could select which user I wanted to log in at. For some reason today, I have to have the monitor plugged in all the until the logon screen comes up before vnc will connect. Once the logon screen is up, I then can connect via vnc & select which user I want to logon as. It's odd because it worked last nigh, but today - Nope nada, it doesn't work & I can't explain why. I did clean up - Removing some applications I don't need on my server. (I'm hoping that isn't the problem) It's odd as well because I don't have to be logged on as a user to connect via vnc, I just have to wait until the logon screen is available...Then I can unplugged the monitor & logon.

However wicd is not connected before fstab probes my nfs shares during boot, so I wold like either to delay the fstab mount command or make sure that the mount command is performed just after that the wireless connection to my home network is up and running. Running mount -a in terminal works well, but I prefer not to run manual commands at every boot. Opensuse 11.2, KDE 4.3
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using SuSE 11.3. I have installed this betavine stuff with which I can use my Vodafone mobile connect usb device. (vodafone-mobile-connect-2.10.01-1.noarch.rpm + dependencies.) I was able to get it to run, it can connect, I can even send text messages (SMS) with it.
However, if I try to use the internet, the system behaves as it wasn't connected to it at all. ping doesn't see anything, neither does firefox etc. I have turned off all proxy and firewall settings.
I suppose I should tell Linux to use this connection for the internet, but how? Do I have to configure something with NetworkManager?
My sons computer /w 11.4 x64 installed a week ago, was working fine till he wanted to play with Blender.So he installed it and it would not run because im lazy and did not instruct him on installing NVidia drivers for his vid card. He added the repo and I had him run update instead of just software management (my bad) anyhow ran the update and there were updates with driver install, rebooted Blender works now.But the nic card sates its not connected in yast no ip in root terminal /w ifconfig info there for nic mac addy and such, tried reboots and reconfig in yast no joy. Dual boot into his windblows and the nic work perfect so not hardware issue.

But for internet connection i have to go to windows. This is because ubuntu is getting connected to the network but is unable to access internet, whereas the windows can. I want to totally abandon windows. Recently i got internet connection in ubuntu for just 15 minutes or so when i ticked the option AVAILABLE TO ALL USERS. but after that the same story continues and iam not able to access internet. Details about Internet connection: This is not my connection, these signals come from nearby building. Its a wifi open public network.
View 9 Replies View RelatedOn the 25th of January, one of my computers randomly stopped being able to connect to the Internet. It was running a dual boot (Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS & Windows XP SP2), and is connected to the network via an ethernet cable (no wireless). According to the Network Manager, everything is working okay (there was no change from when I was able to access the Internet).
When I would use Firefox, I would get the message "Waiting for (page)...". However, this is not a Firefox only problem, as every program requiring Internet access (e.g. Evolution) is unable to connect to the Internet.
I compared the Internet settings to those of my father's Windows XP SP1 computer, which is able to connect to the Internet. There was no difference, except for the IP Address and Hardware Address. Because of this, I incorrectly deduced that either the actual Ethernet cable or the wall plug was faulty. I tried using a different cable and connecting to the Ethernet wall plug used by the aforementioned computer. Nothing changed. I was still unable to connect.
I didn't worry about it until Tuesday, when my other computer had exactly the same problem. It is running a triple boot between Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP SP2, and I am unable to obtain Internet access using any partition. As with the previous case, my computer showed no change in the Internet settings, and the computer also shows it as being connected to the network. It is also connected via an Ethernet cable.
I have a Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000, and I installed Ubuntu before and it worked flawlessly until I decided that I had to go back to Win7 because of certain program compatibility issues.I'm back here trying to set it up and am having no issues except for with my wireless. I can see all of the SSID's, I am able to connect to my wireless, and it displays that I have been assigned an IP and all of the other settings given by DHCP.
I have been trying to fix this for hours, googled, searched these forums, and have spent time with some people on the Ubuntu IRC channel and we are unable to come up with a fix.

The strange thing is that although nothing will load when I try to visit facebook.com, google.com, or any other website... I opened the update manager and I noticed that it would download for 30ish seconds, stop and do nothing for 60ish seconds, resume for another 30, stop, resume, etc. until it finished. I am able to ping my router, and 8.8.8.8, but I am unable to ping [URL].
I have a WET54g bridge that I am trying to get connected to a wireless network that only allows DHCP. The idea behind it is that I would like to connect the Cat6 out of the bridge to a switch allowing multiple wired computers to connect to the wireless network. The bridge will easily connect to the network once I put the WEP key in, however, there is a kink after that. When I connect the Cat6 to my computer and request an IP for that computer, it self assigns. This tells me that it is not talking to the wireless network through the bridge.
I can not find which IP address the bridge was assigned so that I can talk to it. The sub net is 255.255.240.0 which leaves quite a few possibilities. I know that the bridge is, however talking to the wireless network because the light is steady on the front of it which indicates just that. One other thing to stack on is that I know that there is a "splash page" which comes up when any computer connects. You click on the agreement and then you are allowed onto the network. How can I get my computer to talk through the bridge to the wireless network?
I have an external Samba network storage drive that I mount using 'mount -t cifs -o username=aaa,password=aaa //myserver /mnt/mountlocation', but I'm finding it to be a pain to enter that whole command every time I turn on that drive and connect it to my computer via the network. I could put that command in a script and run a simple script like 'mntdrive' that would run that command for me, but is there a way to have the drive 'pre-mounted' so that if it's available on the network it's mounted?
If I put the mount command in one of the startup scripts or in fstab, would it be available at the mount location when the drive is connected if it wasn't connected when the computer was first turned on? Or is mounting the drive manually, even if by running a script that does it for me, something I'll have to do every time I turn on that drive? Any creative ways around this? Would make things easier if it is possible.
