Fedora Installation :: Fonts Showing Up As Random Boxes?
Jul 30, 2009
I reinstalled Fedora 11 last night because i saw that I could leave out packages that I don't need by unchecking everything in the software selection screen. Anaconda installed about 179 packages and I rebooted. I installed X, GDM, and LXDE, but whenever, I start GDM, all the fonts show up as random boxes, ie. there's no english on the sceen, just boxes. I'm pretty sure that i forgot to install a font that fedora uses for gdm but i don't know which one to install.
When I turn on my computer running Ubuntu 10, everything works fine except there are no fonts displayed anywhere, and instead i see boxes (like when a character is missing). If i go into a terminal, i see that i have plenty of fonts installed. I noticed a pango error earlier, but I can't reproduce it right now because I am not near that computer. I tried reinstalling libpango to no avail. I have never heard of something like this, can anyone shed some light, or offer some suggestions on what could be wrong?
I just upgraded from Slackware 12.2 to 13 and most things seem to be working fine (with the exception of the new Amarok, which crashes). However, in the GTK applications I use (Firefox, Gimp, Aumix), all the fonts have been replaced by square boxes.point me in the right direction on troubleshooting this problem? Did I miss a step or do something wrong while upgrading?
fonts not showing up correctly in web browsers and the likes, more specifically bold fonts. On some sites, these show up correctly, but on others, they don't. I have no idea what's causing this, as it seems to have happened without me doing anything (like, literally, I opened a terminal window, then went back to my browser (Chrome, but I suppose that doesn't matter, as it happens on all browsers) and the problem showed up. Note that these fonts used to show up just fine.
I have a couple things I think is my video card. One annoying thing it does is to put half inch square boxes in random places and times that might be trying to display what was in that spot before you changed the window. Sometimes it can be important information so I had to find a way to do something about it. I couldn't get rid of them but I could move them out of the way by moving the pointer to a different area and turning the scroll wheel. That would put the square in the new area where the pointer was.
The other thing is very bad scroll control. Sometimes I would have to use the arrows in the corner. Sometimes I had to drag the slider which moved hard, not at all or very delayed. The squares also make highlighting very difficult. Because an area will not be highlighted you don't know the results until you paste it. It might be perfect. I believe the video card is on the motherboard. I do have a spare slot so If needed I could put in a new one. Where is my title bar at the top of a screen which allows you to move it around or -minimize or maximize or close.
My video suddenly stopped working. I get strange lines across the screen, a weird white box around the cursor and all the fonts are messed up (much similar to this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1395788)I think the problem started when updating to kernel 2.6.31-22, but booting into 2.6.31-21 (which worked just a few days ago) does not solve the problem. I have also tried to disable all screen effects and I have installed the radeonhd driver - without any luck.
In CentOS 5.4 (Final), emacs is displaying characters as little boxes. see attached screen shot. I searched the Web and found others have this same problem with emacs in CentOS 5.4 but have not found any solution. I installed emacs in a base CentOS Amazon EC2 instance as follows:
If I was to make any changes or download anything I have to switch to gnome, because in fluxbox the menu dialog boxes are not appearing.
I'm assuming they are coming up because if it's a dialog asking for my user password the window will unfocus and I can not click on it but no dialog box pops up!
After going to Appearance->Fonts, in Natty, I changed the "Window title font" from Tahoma to "Arial Black". Now I can't change it back because Tahoma isn't listed in the "Pick a Font" dialog. I don't know how I originally got Tahoma. I think it did that several versions of Ubuntu ago. How do I get it to show up in the "Pick a Font" dialog? I do have ttf-mscorefonts-installer installed.
Doing: Code: # dpkg -L ttf-mscorefonts-installer shows that they are in this directory: Code: /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts But Tahoma is not in there?
This is an interaction between OOo and the font package on Ubuntu, so I have searched both sets of forums fruitlessly. In Open Office when I go to select font characteristics for the so-called MS fonts (Arial for example) instead of the menu showing Bold and Italic, it shows "Negreta" and "Cursiva".
I have attempted to download and burn the fedora 13 i386 installation DVD twice, however, both DVDs that I burned failed during installation. I verified the .iso before burn and the dvd before installation and in both cases they were fine. But during installation, I received error messages that some random .rpm file could not be found (for each attempt it was different). All other configuration went fine, this only happened after the final package selection and when the actual installation starts.
EDIT: I am burning the DVD on my mac book pro using disk utility but performing the installation on a Toshiba Satellite.
I have triple boot pc (xp, ubuntu, and fedora), installed in that order. xp and ubuntu seem to be stable. i have had to pull the power cord 3 or 4 times while booted in fedora. i noticed the last 2 times i can still move the mouse around, but can't get it to open anything. the keyboard is locked up, can't alt-f1 or f2 or anything to get console. can't get it to do anything, other than watch the mouse tail move around (weird).
i installed a new power supply (and at least i now have a power switch - the old one never had one), but that didn't fix the lock up problem. i haven't ran yum update since the fc10 live cd gnome install. was planning on doing that later.. not sure how long it will stay up to download all the 300 or so updates. right now the only thing open is a terminal (can't type in it).. what should i look at to fix this lock up problem?
Having one issue with evolution not showing html websites showing up in email like verizon sending a promo. I have gone to edit, preferences, mail preferences, html messages and have always load images from the internet chosen. I have also added sender to contacts. Even if I right click message and tell it to dload images it doesn't.
When I install I never select language support other than English, yet the system gets loaded with a bunch of fonts and input methods for various Eastern languages and I spend time taking them out.Why are they getting installed at all?
I just bought a brand new hard drive, installed fedora with no errors. However when I try to click on the hard drive i get this errorunable to mount physical volume, not a mountable file system, ( I only have 1 hard drive and fedora boots up fine so its got to be working)I installed hardware browser and no hard drives come up
I have a standard F15 installation with Gnome 3 from the live CD. I got bored and decided to play with a few other WMs and DEs. I installed KDE-base, but KDE does not appear as an option at login. Is there something else I need to install? XFCE, Openbox, and Classic Gnome with Compiz all appear in the menu. KDE does not.
I installed Fedora 14 alongside windows, overwriting my old Ubuntu 10 partition. Unfortunately, now the GRUB loader only recognizes my Fedora partition and the built-in windows recovery utility partition. I checked the disc utility and my windows partition still definitely exists, I just can't seem to boot into it.
Home network with 3 Win7 boxes and one elderly Fedora 11 box (heloise) which has been running Samba well for several years. I've just built and started configuring a new Fedora 14 box (abelard) to replace heloise, but can't get the Win7 boxes to see shares on it.
Windows Explorer on the Win7 boxes can see abelard, and they can see the two shares I've created on it, but if I double-click on a share I get the "Windows cannot access" dialog.
I've set a Samba password for one user (ralph), the same as that user's login password, and set the "smb password file" entry to point to the resulting .tdb file.
All IP addresses are static (via Static DHCP), everybody can ping everybody, I can ssh from a Win7 box to abelard via Putty, and the network operates cleanly in all other respects. Here's my smb.conf:
# Samba config file created using SWAT # from UNKNOWN (127.0.0.1) # Date: 2011/05/07 11:25:27 [global] workgroup = MSHOME
I updated Fedora 14 with the new kernel-2.6.35.12-88.fc14.i686 but when I reboot its rebooting automatically after showing the bios. What can I do now.
I want to share a directory between two fedora 12 KDE boxes, peony and dandelion. I have set it up as simple as I can ('share' level security), but it just doesn't want to play. Any idea what might cause this error? I can ping the server ok, using hostname or the IP as shown here.
I just upgraded to 9.10 and all the windows for all programs have the minimize/maximize/close boxes on the left side. No big deal, but for decades they've been on the right. Is this something in my computer? If so, can I do something to get them over where they belong?
I'm looking for a script that copies a random .jpg from a random folder in my ~/Pictures folder to my ~/temp folder with a standard filename. This file will then be displayed in Conky. I can fix the last part, but I cannot find a way to do the first part.
I have fedora running as our email server at work using sendmail. It used to have spamassassin and MailScanner installed, but one of those died over the weekend and killed the mail server. We do not need either of these as we are using a web based spam filter now (postini), so I tried removing these. I have discovered that the mail is in the mqueue waiting for delivery to the users mailboxes. I have tried using "sendmail -q -v":
Code: Running /var/spool/mqueue/n51Jx6Gg023820 (sequence 1 of 1174) <abaughman@grandproductsinc.com>... Connecting to local... <abaughman@grandproductsinc.com>... Deferred: local mailer (/usr/bin/procmail) exited with EX_TEMPFAIL
Running /var/spool/mqueue/n51JsuRe023619 (sequence 2 of 1174) <ksullivan@grandproductsinc.com>... Connecting to local... <ksullivan@grandproductsinc.com>... Deferred: local mailer (/usr/bin/procmail) exited with EX_TEMPFAIL .....
I do not have a procmail config file: /etc/procmailrc. I am not sure why, or what it should be, perhaps that is the problem. I guess I don't exactly know how this server runs all that well. I was able to get it up and running but never understood it enough to now find what is not working correctly.
I have been trying to setup IPSEC encryption between two linux boxes. I have a server application which runs on Linux Box A and a client application which runs on Linux Box B. The client sends the data to server. I have captured wireshark logs at both server and client end. In the wireshark logs I can see that the Box B send ESP packets to the Box A.
But the server Application running at Box A is is not able to get any packets. If I turn the policy off at Box B, Box B sends normal UDP data packets to Box A, but still the Server Application running at box A doesn't get any packets.( Expected behavior since policy at Box A enforces that all packets coming from Box B should be encrypted.)
If I turn the policy off at Box A and Box B both, the server application receives the unencrypted data which is also expected behavior. But when the policy is turned on at both the boxes the encrypted packets reach the Box A but are not delivered to the server application. If anyone has faced such issue please help me to debug this issue. I have attached the ifconfig and policy settings at Box A and Box B for your reference.
I would like to use the Adobe Garamond Pro in my text doccument in open office writer. I got a text document where from a friend where it is used so I know that it can. But when I want to edit I cant find it in the fonts dropdown menu.
