Just finished a security update, (Fedora 12) and it said I had to restart the computer to have it take effect. When I restarted, all I got was the "Compaq" logo....forever. No Grub2 (it's a three system set up), no bios, just the brand name of the box. Even worse, when I tried going at it with a live cd, the same thing; the bios never loads, so no live cd fix.
View 6 RepliesWhen I updated Linux it crashed in the middle of the update. I think there was not enough disk space. I had a windows dual boot and tried to make the Linux partition larger but in doing that a crashed grub and can't use Linux or Windows. I tried super grub but it didn't work so I tried to fix the partitions with gparted live cd. It my disk just showed up as empty. I formatted it and re installed debian but it didn't work. I can see partitions but my computer won't boot.

I have a Dell notebook without cd-rom. I want to use a usb-pen to boot the computer so I can do a netinstall. Unfortunately I can't find much discussing this topics. At least as far as I can see.. Everybody is talking about making the usb a live-cd etc etc tec.. There has to be an easier way? It should be possible to just copy file1 2 and 3 over to the usb here in Vista, reboot and start the install so I can type in the location and start the netinstall!
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up my first Linux install and I was wondering if I would be able to boot Fedora from a CD while keeping every other file on my computer, or in other words if I would be able to put the /boot partition onto a cd. I've also read that Linux can be booted entirely from a logical partition. If that's true then can anyone help me in setting that up. Mostly my problem is I already have four primary partitions, one being a logical drive with plenty of free space in it, and I can't get rid of the primary partitions I already have.

I work in a retail store at which there is a computer set up in the corner for customers to browse the stores website on. The problem is that that is all it will let me do. I get board, and want to do other stuff. Once windows starts, it skips the logon on screen and once loaded the only thing that can be done on the computer is browse the stores website.
However, if I unplug the computer I can while its starting up get into BIOS. So here im wondering two things. 1) If I put in the USB, boot from it, and load ubuntu (even though I will only be able to use the default programs as theres no way I would want to install it on the work computer), will I get fired? In other words, is there a way if there monitoring the computers to know what im doing or because its a different OS will I be fine. 2) Alternatively, in BIOS there is an option to disable network administration.
For this my question is the same, if I disable it, do fun stuff on the computer all day, the re-enable it before I leave is there a high change of the network administration catching on to this or no.
basically put a new hard drive in my old computer and wanted to install fedora on it, downloaded fedora 12 dvd iso (3ish gb in size) have burnt it to a dvd disc, turned my laptop on and set it to boot from cd drive, restarted it, it reads the disc and displays the following message:

The uderscore is flashing and i can type stuff in but have no idea what to type in to find the kernel image, or why it cant find the kernel image.
I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

Since the update there where Radeon driver updates which made Ubuntu not to load X. [URL] You can see the update @ 1/3. The computer is a HP 6715s. As I can remember there is a Radeon X1250 in the computer. How can I get the old version working again without reinstalling?

I have successfully installed Fedora 12 today on a Dell M6400 from a live usb stick. Everything went very well. After the installation I rebooted, and updated the system. Then rebooted again, and now I get this message. No bootable partition in table. Apparently something in the update is broken... Is there a buggy kernel version I should be aware of? Should mention that I have two disks in a hardware raid 1. I left a none-bootable USB key in the computer when rebooting.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was having problems performing an update yesterday that failed on dovecot dependancies and after a few tries I removed dovecote (it wasn't being used) from the installation and tried again. Everything seemed to be going OK then the update (about 160MB) hung and the screen went black a few times and I think then shutdown automatically. The PC then fails to reboot and displayes the message "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)" I have tried to get the PC to boot with the super grub disc but without success (probably my in experience) I have also tried a suggestion from one of the forums to start the PC with a live CD and typed su -c 'grub-install /dev/sda at the terminal again without sucess. I have looked at the files with the live CD there are grub, menu and kernel files there (some are in lost + found, b ut don't know wheer these should be so have not changed anything.
Is there an easy way for the in-experienced to repair the boot process ?
The PC is a pentium 4 running Fedora 13
There is a 200MB boot partition formated as Ext3
and a 19GB partition formated as a LVM with Ext4
There is a CD drive but no DVD
Everything has worked OK for the past year through two online upgrades.
I have recently updated my Fedora 11 installation which replaced my older 167 kernel with the newer 217 kernel. However, the 217 kernel will not boot completely. It will show the splash loading screen, and then will switch to a rapidly blinking cursor. This cursor blinks for about 5 seconds and then disappears. I can access terminals using ALT+F2, etc. I can log in to these terminals, but init commands do not complete (something about a binary handler). I'm not sure if something is conflicting with an update to X or what is wrong. The most recent kernel that I managed to get to work was Kernel 167, however I cannot find this kernel for download.

Hello, i recently update the kernel in fedora through the GUI update manager and after restarting the new kernel wouldn't boot and i had to reboot into the old one. it freezes right after Plymouth finishes and the login screen should show up it just completely freezes, i do have proprietary nvidia drivers could it be that?
View 9 Replies View RelatedTried the DVD install for 10. Install went fine other than it take for freakin ever, but after an 1 hour install, the update wanted to install 1675 or so updates. I let those updates install. 5 hours later the updates were done. Rebooted and now it freezes at a blank screen right after the 3 scrolling bars. System is older AMD 3000+, 1 GIG RAM with NVidia 5700 video card.
I did try and search some. But the only thing I could find was something about editing my grub file for a scan=sync setting (the information was basically gibberish to me. No clue what it was talking about or how I would edit a file on a system that won't boot). I tried to recover mode off the live CD. It had some options that said you could type Linux command line arguments, but whenever it got to the sysimage it says Linux isn't a command.
I just allowed Update Manager to install the latest security updates to the Linux kernel, header and xorg and clicked on restart system. After selecting Ubuntu from the system's boot manager I'm dropped into a Grub command line and don't have any idea what to do next.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 inside Windows Vista on a Toshiba L500 laptop using the Wubi setup.
Have had a clean perfectly working copy of 2.6.31.6-166 for months and after two updates to 2.6.31.12-174.2.3 and 2.6.31.12-174.2.19, neither of the newer kernel versions will allow machine to boot properly. Start-up hangs at the preload daemon with a flickering screen. To use machine, must use grub chooser and choose the original base kernel.
Running on Tyan h2000m board, opteron 2356, Nvidia 9800 GTX+ and 12GB of dram with SELinux security enabled.
Finally updates are broken - I've been able to use my upgraded F12 system for some time, faithfully keeping up with f10, then f11. Just yesterday it finally broke:

It would appear that the most recent kernel update has broken the 10MB barrier initially set by the version I first installed (for the boot partition). Needless to say, I have quite an investment in this machine, and of course no time to back it all up and do a fresh F12 install. I am hoping someone out there can give me a bulletproof way to steal some space and expand the boot partition...

I have a Lenovo T400 and I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. After the upgrade I am not able anymore to start ubuntu.
I get the Grub boot manager. After that I only see the a black screen and sometimes a few pixels.
I tried already to remove 'quite' and 'splash' in the boot options. And I added 'nomodset' and 'fb=false'.
The last update of a few days ago messed up the update manager. here is the error that I get. I do not have the time to hunt for bug reports to report this and don't know how anyway. maybe someone else can do it.

I was updating Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04 and my computer crashed/shutoff because of overheating(my laptop doesn't ever do this when running Windows 7 but seems to really need to be as cool as possible when running Ubuntu). the update was at about 12-18 minutes left(also i am using wubi to have it run alongside windows). After getting pissed off that i forgot to backup Ubuntu i restarted it to see if it would finish updating.
To my dismay it the loading screen looked a bit unusual and when it go to the login screen the word "Ubuntu" was flashing uncontrollably and the time in the bottom right corner was acting the same. i feel that i have totally ruined it and i also don't know how i can remove Ubuntu from my computer so that i could reinstall it as Ubuntu 11.04 instead of upgrading from 10.10. i still have Wubi.exe for Ubuntu 10.10 but i'm not sure if that just searches for the most recent version of Ubuntu.
Some days ago (Sep 2?) I did a 'yum update' on a F13 64bit computer. Since then I don't get a logon screen when booting. The computer doesn't respond to CTRL-ALT-F2 but I can login over ssh.
CAPS-LOCK and NUM-LOCK don't work on the local keyboard and moving the mouse has no effect either. When looking in dmesg I see following line:

I have F15 64 on my laptop, it's been running relatively well, today I decided to do a yum update. There were about 20 updates, nothing major from what I saw, NetworkManger stuff etc. Everything goes well, until the end when I get some error (no I don't recall what it was, yes I should've written it down, and no I don't need a lecture about this) so I manually reboot the computer. And I boot to a black screen, Oh what joy of using Fedora. I edit grub to try and get in with runlevel 3, but encounter an error "Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init" then a few lines down it's "panic occured, switching back to text console /sbin/init:error while loading shared libraries /lib64.libgcc_s.so.1: invalid ELF header"
I'm very frustrated, this comes right on the heels of pre upgrade forcing me to do a complete fresh install of F15. I'm honestly one error away from moving to another distro (Fedora is my first)

I just installed Xubuntu 10.10. It indicated 202 updates, so I started to update and next thing I notice is that the computer is frozen on probably the screensaver. I reboot the computer by pressing the reset-button (ctl-alt-del doesn't work) and after reboot it flashes the update-tool processing a kernel-update. Then it flashes back to login screen and hangs. Another reboot I only get to login screen and it hangs. When booting into recovery mode, it hangs on

I was reading that Arch does not provide security updates, but just provides security by keeping with up-to-date software...So what is in a security update and what does it patch? The kernel?
