Fedora Installation :: F12 - Cannot Boot After First Update

Dec 29, 2009

I have successfully installed Fedora 12 today on a Dell M6400 from a live usb stick. Everything went very well. After the installation I rebooted, and updated the system. Then rebooted again, and now I get this message. No bootable partition in table. Apparently something in the update is broken... Is there a buggy kernel version I should be aware of? Should mention that I have two disks in a hardware raid 1. I left a none-bootable USB key in the computer when rebooting.

Fedora Installation :: FC 13 Boot After Update Failure?

Aug 10, 2010

I was having problems performing an update yesterday that failed on dovecot dependancies and after a few tries I removed dovecote (it wasn't being used) from the installation and tried again. Everything seemed to be going OK then the update (about 160MB) hung and the screen went black a few times and I think then shutdown automatically. The PC then fails to reboot and displayes the message "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)" I have tried to get the PC to boot with the super grub disc but without success (probably my in experience) I have also tried a suggestion from one of the forums to start the PC with a live CD and typed su -c 'grub-install /dev/sda at the terminal again without sucess. I have looked at the files with the live CD there are grub, menu and kernel files there (some are in lost + found, b ut don't know wheer these should be so have not changed anything.

Is there an easy way for the in-experienced to repair the boot process ?

The PC is a pentium 4 running Fedora 13
There is a 200MB boot partition formated as Ext3
and a 19GB partition formated as a LVM with Ext4
There is a CD drive but no DVD

Everything has worked OK for the past year through two online upgrades.

Fedora Installation :: F11 Kernel 217 Won't Boot After Update / Resolve This?

Aug 23, 2009

I have recently updated my Fedora 11 installation which replaced my older 167 kernel with the newer 217 kernel. However, the 217 kernel will not boot completely. It will show the splash loading screen, and then will switch to a rapidly blinking cursor. This cursor blinks for about 5 seconds and then disappears. I can access terminals using ALT+F2, etc. I can log in to these terminals, but init commands do not complete (something about a binary handler). I'm not sure if something is conflicting with an update to X or what is wrong. The most recent kernel that I managed to get to work was Kernel 167, however I cannot find this kernel for download.

Sys info:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+
3GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 8600GT with proprietary drivers
320GB Hard Disk with windows and linux partitions
Fedora 11 32-bit i586

Fedora Installation :: Computer Won't Boot After Security Update

Jul 21, 2010

Just finished a security update, (Fedora 12) and it said I had to restart the computer to have it take effect. When I restarted, all I got was the "Compaq" logo....forever. No Grub2 (it's a three system set up), no bios, just the brand name of the box. Even worse, when I tried going at it with a live cd, the same thing; the bios never loads, so no live cd fix.

Fedora Installation :: Boot Freezes At Black Screen After Update

Mar 12, 2009

Tried the DVD install for 10. Install went fine other than it take for freakin ever, but after an 1 hour install, the update wanted to install 1675 or so updates. I let those updates install. 5 hours later the updates were done. Rebooted and now it freezes at a blank screen right after the 3 scrolling bars. System is older AMD 3000+, 1 GIG RAM with NVidia 5700 video card.

I did try and search some. But the only thing I could find was something about editing my grub file for a scan=sync setting (the information was basically gibberish to me. No clue what it was talking about or how I would edit a file on a system that won't boot). I tried to recover mode off the live CD. It had some options that said you could type Linux command line arguments, but whenever it got to the sysimage it says Linux isn't a command.

Fedora Installation :: FC12: Yum Update Then Boot Hangs / Preload Daemon?

Feb 17, 2010

Have had a clean perfectly working copy of 2.6.31.6-166 for months and after two updates to 2.6.31.12-174.2.3 and 2.6.31.12-174.2.19, neither of the newer kernel versions will allow machine to boot properly. Start-up hangs at the preload daemon with a flickering screen. To use machine, must use grub chooser and choose the original base kernel.

Running on Tyan h2000m board, opteron 2356, Nvidia 9800 GTX+ and 12GB of dram with SELinux security enabled.

Fedora Installation :: Kernel Update Fails Due To 10MB Boot Partition

Feb 23, 2010

Finally updates are broken - I've been able to use my upgraded F12 system for some time, faithfully keeping up with f10, then f11. Just yesterday it finally broke:

Test Transaction Errors: installing package kernel-2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.i686 needs 10MB on the /boot filesystem

It would appear that the most recent kernel update has broken the 10MB barrier initially set by the version I first installed (for the boot partition). Needless to say, I have quite an investment in this machine, and of course no time to back it all up and do a fresh F12 install. I am hoping someone out there can give me a bulletproof way to steal some space and expand the boot partition...

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot After Update

Oct 11, 2010

I updated from 10.04 to 10.10 this afternoon, and after a reboot, I can't start ubuntu in the new kernel. Grub shows up fine, but after selecting the new kernel, all disk activity stops after a while. When booting in safe mode, the same thing happens.

Oddly, booting in the old kernel does work. I'm not sure which log files might be of use here, so haven't gotten much further..

[edit] Just tried to boot in the livecd, doesn't work either, same problem.... I guess there is a driver problem somewhere most likely

Ubuntu Installation :: Another 'no Boot After Update'?

Nov 30, 2010

jump straight in with a problem. I'm experiencing the same problem mentioned here; where it was suggested to start an individual thread.I have been using ubuntu as a dual boot with vista for a couple of months. Apart from a few hiccups I've been very pleased, but after an update I am unable to boot ubuntu. It appears to be the same issue in the link above.

I originally installed 10.4 (because my first attempt with 10.10 would not install (turned out to be duff CD)) and then updated to 10.10. All was fine until this latest automatic update.I've tried a few things suggested -- copying the c:ubuntuwinbootwubildr file over c:wubildr -- with no luck... I'm worried about making things worse and thought I'd ask first. I hope that's OK.I also tried working from my liveCD, but it only gave me the option to install (because it's 10.4 and I've updated?

Now when I turn it on, it acts like it's checking my desk, but it says something like "/ is not available or doesn't exist press s to skip, or m to manually recover" then when you skip it's like "/mnt is not available" It could be possible I accidentally turned it off during the upgrade.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot After Update

Jul 12, 2011

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 via wubi.exe to dual-boot between Ubuntu and Windows XP Home Edition. Ubuntu was the default OS to load on boot. I tried running a few updates in Ubuntu through the update manager, followed the instructions in the wizard, and restarted my computer when asked. The computer now automatically boots straight into the "GNU GRUB version 1.99~rc1-13ubuntu3 Minimum BASH-like line editing is supported..."

I have only just started to get into Linux. I have no idea how to get through this portion. I can't load back into Windows either (at least...I'm not sure how to. I never get the opportunity to choose which OS to launch). I've tried researching this issue, but still not having a lot of success. My only current option is to completely reformat my HD, but this is (hopefully) not going to be needed. If I could just get back into Windows I think I could probably reinstall with Wubi.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Dual Boot 10.04 To 10.10?

Oct 17, 2010

So i have a second PC, which has 2 HDD's in it. Windows 7 is installed on the first HDD, (640GB) and i have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on the second HDD (80GB). This was done basically by "OldFred" 's directions.[URL]...(First few posts on thread i linked will inform how i have my Dual boot setup) So far i haven't really used Ubuntu much. And from reading on here, 10.10 isnt to stable, but still im interested in knowing:

Is it safe (considering my dual boot setup) to update my Ubuntu version? I am assuming when in my 10.04 it would tell me a new version is out, but maybe it doesnt upgrade like that, you tell me please. Basically i am concerned for messing up my dual boot setup considering if something goes wrong , i dont want to mess up my Windows 7 OS or the time taken to successfully install the dual boot.

Fedora :: Cannot Boot After FC13 Update

Recently I ran a software update, and when I rebooted the machine I got a blank screen with only a blinking underscore in the upper-left corner. Rebooted several times to no avail. I thought perhaps I had made a mistake, so I just reinstalled. I have tried reinstalling several times now with both 32-bit and 64-bit FC13, each time with the same result: everything works fine up until I install software updates; then after the next reboot I get a blank screen with the blinking underscore. I see the POST screen, and then it just goes blank. It doesn't seem to respond to any keyboard/mouse input; I eventually have to hold down the power button to make it power off.

Fedora :: Unable To Boot To F14 After Update

Dec 18, 2010

I am new to linux but have install fedora 14 twice on my computer now and about to go for three. The first time I installed it, ran the updates using yum update, downloaded and installed wireless driver b43 then tried to change boot order to boot to win 7 first and thought I messed it up when I did that. It took over 20 minutes just to boot up and log in and about 10 minutes just to open a terminal window. So re-installed it had a friend who is very good with fedora change the boot order, then did the yum updates and wireless driver install again today. Now when I reboot my computer it no longer automatically boots to windows, and does not even give me the option to boot to fedora.

I believe it's the grub menu but the boot menu that I used to get if i wanted to change the boot to fedora is now a different color (white & black) and doesn't list the option to boot to fedora. Currently I do not have the DVD I used to install and was hoping there was a way to fix it without re-installing it. The boot menu does give me the options of hitting 'e' to edit something or 'a' to edit the kernel arguments, and I have no idea what either of them are. But the 'a' does not do anything, 'e' brings me to another menu option with chainloader and rvnotify or something similar. And there are more buttons to edit stuff and 'b' to boot from the choices but they both boot to win 7 not fedora.
