are there any programs that will protect my computer on the Internet. Just started using fed 10 from windows so i am not sure what i need to do. I am using an acer aspire 5630 laptop.
View 1 RepliesToday I noticed my sdl modem flashing away when I had no internet access programs active as far as I was aware. I did a 'ps ax' to see what was running. I saw nothing that warranted internet access. I didn't recognize the gvfsd-computer process and tried finding documentation about it on my system. I began to feel uncomfortable when I couldn't find anything showing what it was. Finally, I killed the process and the internet access immediately stopped. Research on the net showed that gvfsd-computer is a file browser. I find this very disturbing. Why was a file browser accessing my disk drive (the light was flashing) and why was it accessing the internet without my requesting such an action?

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy Ubuntu 9.10 is intalled on a partition on my computer HDD. The other partition OS is Windows XP. My Windows uses McAfee as the antiviral program. Granted that linux is at a much less risk for viruses, some still apparently can slide through on incoming emails from Windows computers.
1) Will my Windows partition McAfee protect the entire computer?
2) If not, suggestions for an anti-viral program?
I want to start using videos/music files downloaded from untrusted sources (BT,Sharing Forums, etc.). Haven't made this a habit b4 because of the security risks. I want to take steps to reduce the risk & protect my computer from anything malicious. What are some good choices for this? The biggest step I took so far is using Ubuntu since it's very virus resistant, but other threats do exist out there (rootkits, malicious scripts, etc.). When downloading files from untrusted sources, who knows what may be hidden inside.Some options I'm thinking about:
1) Using a VM (with Ubuntu installed inside) & playing the files inside the VM. If anything malicious happen, it would be trapped inside & I could easily revert to a clean snapshot.
2) Using AppArmor to restrict what the files or program used to play the files can/can't do. AA seems very complicated though.
Are the above overkill? Would it be sufficient enough to just open these files on a non-admin user account since no access to root or sudo?
I have just configured Centos 5.5 LocalMailServer with fetchmail and sendmail , Proxy with Squid and FileServer with samba. Now my concern is security.. How can i protect my server with outside attack. Will I need to block some ports or I need special tools or script so no one from outside can attack my machine. My machine is working on intranet with local ip only.. No web server or static ip exists. Machine is connected with ADSL router to access internet.

What I am really getting at is that I've searched the net and found lots of advice on how to detect if your computer has been hacked but I haven't found ways to know if your computer is being attacked. Obviously, this group did that.
I recently set up a network of computers via Ethernet, all of which use Fedora 10. I would like to be able to get any computer on the network to hook up to the internet.(I think the solution is now figured out - see below, on page 2, "problem solved")

2. Evolutin don't work. It don't send letters and don't receive them.
Just finished a security update, (Fedora 12) and it said I had to restart the computer to have it take effect. When I restarted, all I got was the "Compaq" logo....forever. No Grub2 (it's a three system set up), no bios, just the brand name of the box. Even worse, when I tried going at it with a live cd, the same thing; the bios never loads, so no live cd fix.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have so many _wired_ devices that I can't get by with just 4 eth cable outlets anymore, so I thought I'd hook up an older router that I don't use as a way to get extra places to plug devices into.
Now it looks like:
Internet
then cable modem
then router1/wifi + (1 eth NAT storage)
then router2 + 4 eth0 computers:
(legacy FC5 box)
(legacy F11 box)
(updated F13 box)
(windoze)
All of the computers EXCEPT the FC5 box are fine (my def of "fine" is I can ssh to and from the other computers and to outside computers, and browse the web).
The FC5 box, however, can ssh to and from computers inside the network just fine, but can't get any kind of web browsing. Nor can it ping to the outside. I get a "Network is unreachable" error. I'm not using a proxy, not knowingly, and my firewall settings haven't changed...it certainly hasn't been blocking port 80 before.
what's the best way to go about adding more ethernet when you need about 7 cables. I'm not really excited to buy a router with 8 ports or anything like that, especially when this seems to _almost_ be working just fine.
I'm new too ubuntu so I don't know much. What I do know is, my computer keeps freezing when I try running more then a few programs. I ran a df -h test.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have several Proxy severs set up at our business. I always do the same basic config, except for my version of Fedora (I always grab the newest).
I put 2 nics in a machine Load Squid, Dansguardian and Firestarter. I use Firestarter to direct the surfing traffic from my LAN out a cable modem that I have for each store. This lessons the bandwidth on the T1.
Easy enough. My problem is Firestarter has always been a little flaky. But as of F11 the gui wont stay up for more than a few minutes at a time. It still functions, but you have to be quick if your going to use it because it will inevitable crash.
So I suppose it's time to start doing this the correct way and using IP Tables. Does anybody have a resource they can point me to that will help me understand how to do this? It looks like this might be as simple as setting it up with the GUI Firewall tool that comes with F12 but I'm still not exactly sure how.
I'm trying to get my Creative Zen V Plus working. Ubuntu sees it when I plug it in, and suggests programs to open it with. Also, it shows up under "$lsusb", but when I tried using gnomad2 and kzenexplorer, they couldn't find any jukeboxes. Also, rhythmbox doesn't show any players.
