Fedora Installation :: Use A Usb-pen To Boot The Computer?

Aug 6, 2009

I have a Dell notebook without cd-rom. I want to use a usb-pen to boot the computer so I can do a netinstall. Unfortunately I can't find much discussing this topics. At least as far as I can see.. Everybody is talking about making the usb a live-cd etc etc tec.. There has to be an easier way? It should be possible to just copy file1 2 and 3 over to the usb here in Vista, reboot and start the install so I can type in the location and start the netinstall!

Fedora Installation :: Uable To Boot Fedora From A CD While Keeping Other File On Computer?

Feb 14, 2009

I'm setting up my first Linux install and I was wondering if I would be able to boot Fedora from a CD while keeping every other file on my computer, or in other words if I would be able to put the /boot partition onto a cd. I've also read that Linux can be booted entirely from a logical partition. If that's true then can anyone help me in setting that up. Mostly my problem is I already have four primary partitions, one being a logical drive with plenty of free space in it, and I can't get rid of the primary partitions I already have.

Fedora Installation :: Computer Won't Boot After Security Update

Jul 21, 2010

Just finished a security update, (Fedora 12) and it said I had to restart the computer to have it take effect. When I restarted, all I got was the "Compaq" logo....forever. No Grub2 (it's a three system set up), no bios, just the brand name of the box. Even worse, when I tried going at it with a live cd, the same thing; the bios never loads, so no live cd fix.

Fedora Installation :: 15 Post Install Boot - Computer Hangs Before Grub Loads

Jun 5, 2011

I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Won't Boot DVD Or USB?

Jan 4, 2011

Brand new build, top of the line components, windows 7 x64 installed and working flawlessly. I've got the boot order with cd rom first, usb 2nd, hard drive 3rd. I've got a good DVD in the blu ray drive, and it does not boot from the drive. Also same issue when the USB is in. Its using a SSD and I almost get the impression its checking things too fast then just heading to the SSD to load windows. Any ideas?

I've put the DVD into a crappy old laptop I have and it boots from it so I know its functional (the laptop shows some error for kernel or something but regardless it does get the ball rolling).

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Won't Boot On AMD 64-bit Computer?

May 10, 2011

Installed 11.04 several ways on ACER AMD 64-bit Phenom II computer with Win 7, 1.5 TB HD, and 500 GB Sata removable but none would boot. LiveCD works fine with Unity desktop displayed. Installed first using Wubi but would not boot. Then installed in 500 GB USB removable allowing entire disk to be used. Installation completed OK but would not boot. Created Super Grub2 disk and booted to it. It recognized Grub.cfg in removable but just got a black screen with blinking cursor in top lefthand corner when tried to boot Ubuntu. Then I cloned this installation to the primary 1.5 TB HD in an ext4 logical partition. It was recognized by Super Grub2 but would not boot. I tried a fresh installation from the LiveCD with the removable turned off, hoping that the new ext4 partition would be seen, but such was not the case. All I got was the message (during installation attempt), "No root file system is defined". I used the AMD64 version of 11.04 since the computer was 64-bit.

Is there any way to initially boot via CD and then transfer control to USB Fedora?

I managed to get a text login by doing ALT+Control+F2 and managed to get on IRC and I got some help (I still can't boot normaly) but thanks to the solution by nirik which was to get a text-login and to run startx, that works, however it doesn't fix the problem of me not being able to boot normaly, If I add nomodeset to the KMS I get:[URL] strangly enough the reason why I reset is because the Internet wasn't working. Fedora :: Can't Boot F14 On Computer

This is still a bug in the latest kernel

but looks like it's fixed in 2.6.35-7.12

When will this kernel be release?

Is there any way to bypass this driver during boot up so I can install F14?

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Crashed - Does Not Boot Hdd

Sep 1, 2011

I am writing this from a LiveDVD of 11.04. My machine, which is an Inspiron1501 with AMD64 dualcore crashed while running a working copy of 10.04LTS 32bit. At first Harddrived seemed unrecoverable, but not that may not be the case if I can mount it. HD is partitioned as 1 FAT which holds the OEM installer1 NTFS with a sub/ virtual NTFS (not as a file, but as a "partition", only readable from WinXX) 1 Linux Swap 1 Linux Extention 3 (I believe it is 3, as in EXT FS 3) Machine initially displayed:

Code:

[ 2.736258] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 160x50
No init found. Try passing init= bootarg.
BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs)_

After following some advice, I booted into Win and shutdown cleanly. Which has made the machine only say this on boot:

Code:

No init found. Try passing init= bootarg.
BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs)_

Now, to make things a little more complicated, my home directory is encrypted. Could I just copy that over to a new install provided I can get it to mount?

Fedora :: Computer Fails To Boot?

Nov 14, 2009

I am running Fedora 11 on a Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 MB, AMD x2, and three WD5000AAKS 500Gb drives. Today, I had to reboot, and the PC stops on a normal reboot with merely the word GRUB on a line on its own.

It takes a long time to perform the "Detecting IDE drives" process which may be some help in diagnosis.

When I tried to boot in with the installation disk to do a rescue, it got as far as complaining with the following messages before freezing completely:-

ata1: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)
ata1: link online but device misclassified, retrying
ata1: reset failed (errno=-11) retrying in 5 secs
then it displays
ata1: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5Gbps
after which it freezes

diagnosis of what is wrong will be gratefully received. I am beginning to think that I will need to replace the MB.

Ubuntu Installation :: Backing Up Computer Before Dual Boot?

Jul 20, 2010

So im trying to backup my computer, and I understand the easiest and maybe best way is just through an external hard drive. Mine is 1 terabyte. Ive organized my folders by just putting everything into my documents. But when I hook up my external hard drive, and I try to drag and drop, even through explorer, or copy and paste the folder, it just creates a shortcut. Then, if I bring it to another computer and open that file it just goes to the my documents of that computer, so it's obviously useless. I know this is extremely basic but I know I should do it prior to dual boot just in case.

Fedora :: Computer Fails To Boot From Any Media

Dec 10, 2009

My computer refuses to boot. When I try to boot from my hard drive, it's just stuck at that annoying little thing in the upper left corner, blinking, driving me crazy

When I try to boot from a live media it just gets stuck at "ACPI: Core revision 20070126"

I've tried various CD's and it's just telling me the same thing. I can't figure out what is wrong.

Lately my i've experience that for some reason my computer would just turn off, and sometimes reboot.

I've read a little about ACPI, and it's a shortening for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface.

When entering my BIOS and going to the "Power"-tab i have the possibillity of enabling ACPI 2.0 support. Don't know if this is a good idea though, and i won't risk destroying my computer

Hardware configuration:
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 3.2Ghz
Motherboard: Some old ASUS
Memory: 2GB
Video Card: Ati Radeon 9600 128MB

Ubuntu Installation :: Computer Will No Longer Boot Into XP After Upgrade / Sort It?

May 8, 2010

My knowledge of how Linux works is very limited. I've used it for about a year, but just doing very basic tasks (browsing the Internet, listening to music, etc).

Anyway, I upgraded to the newest edition of Ubuntu and installed the new Grub as the update seemed to recommend installing it to every partition and hard drive. I've seen that other people are now having issues from doing that as well.

I am able to boot into Linux just fine; it is working great. However, when I attempted to load Windows XP from Grub, the computer would just restart. I followed the recommendation listed here: http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/sh...95&postcount=3 which seemed to fix the problem for Windows 7 users. Now, all I get when I attempt to load XP is a blank screen with nothing but a blinking cursor (but hey, at least the computer isn't just automatically re-booting, that's some sort of progress...maybe...)
