Networking :: "cannot Activate Network Device Eth0"?

Dec 28, 2010

The problem I'm having is on a CentOS4 machine. I don't use CentOS regularly (Ubuntu and Mint, yes) so I'm not sure if this is something that is particular to CentOS or not. I have this workstation that controls a microscope controller. The drives in this computer are some POS Seagate drives where the data storage drive has already conked out more than once. I think this time there was a problem with the OS drive that caused a lot of filesystem errors. I wasn't able to boot the OS at first but I ran fsck from a liveCD and was able to fix the (hundreds of) errors and the OS can now boot from the drive. The problem ave now is the ethernet does not work. I know there's not a problem with the ethernet controllers because I can access the internet through the liveCD. When I try to activate eth0, or eth1, I get the following error:Quote:

Cannot activate network device eth0!
network-functions: line 180: ip: command not found
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.9-89.0.9.ELsmp/modules.symbols line 1: ignoring bad line starting with 'GROUP'

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Realtek NIC Installation - Unable To Configure The Network Card Because Kernel Device (eth0, Wlan0) Is Not Present

Nov 30, 2010

Installed a TP-Link TG-3269 Gigabit card in a machine running OS 11.3 32 bit, when I go into Yast, Network Devices, Network to try configuring the card I get this errormsg: Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device (eth0, wlan0) is not present. This is mostly caused by missing firmware (for wlan devices). See dmesg output for details. Couldn't find any mention of the card in dmesg's output, (though the 8139 onboard card is in there) there is some stuff about pci host bridge but I don't know whether they would be relevant or not

The chip on the card says it's rtl8169sc but lspci lists it as being 00:07.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8369 (rev 10) Done some googling and there don't seem be any drivers for a Realtek 8639 and it returns no matches from a search on realtek's site, but there is a driver there for rtl8169sc chips, which I downloaded and installed, no errors when installing it Even after a reboot I still get the same error in Yast's Network Settings screen, lspci still lists it as 8369 and the device isn't listed at all if I run ifconfig

Fedora Networking :: Activate Device When Computer Starts

Jul 28, 2010

I just did a clean install and ran system-config-network from command line to fix my IP settings. Everything works but when I reboot, my NIC is gone from #ifconfig -a

I have to login to the GUI and go to System --> Administration --> Network --> "Click on my NIC" --> check the box that says "Activate device when computer starts"

Once this box is checked, everything works fine. - I have turned off NetworkManager and just use the network service to manage my ip settings.

I was wondering if this "Activate device when computer starts" can be done through the command line without having to access the GUI?

Fedora Installation :: Error Message: [root@theraugafamily Network-scripts]# Ifup Eth0

Dec 23, 2010

I am in the process of settign up a home server under FC14. The installation recognized both NICs, one as Intel Gigabit and the other as a Realtek Semiconductor as it should be. But when trying to start eth0 (Realtek) I get the following error message:

[root@theraugafamily network-scripts]# ifup eth0
Active connection state: activating

state: unknown Error: Connection activation failed. Some more ifo the this NIC as it is of special type.It is a Viking PCI ADSL2+ Modem Card. I am quoting form the description "Being a gully integrated card, no external plug packs are required and cabling is simplified to just an ADSL line connection. The need to purchase an extra ethernet card is also eliminated, as yjis features is build into the card. The onboard Ethernet controller (RTL8139) makes the modem appear to the OS as a standard network card. Thus the Viking can be used with almost any modern O/S without the need for special drivers. This includes Windows, Linux, Solaris, xBSD, etc.." setting ACPI=off in GRUB.conf does not fix the issue

Fedora Networking :: The Eth0 Device Does Not Start On Boot?

Mar 29, 2010

I just finished installing Fedora 12 on a rack mount server. I was modifying the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file to use a static IP address, but now nothing works. The device does not boot on start up or anything.Currently, ifcfg-eth0 looks like:

Quote:

DEVICE=eth0
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=none[code].....

The eth0 device does not start on boot; the server does not get the IP address, is not reachable over the network, and will not connect to the internet....

General :: Lost Connection - Cannot Activate Eth0 / What Happened?

Jun 16, 2010

I am running fedora vm under XP host and using NAT connection to the Internet. It usually works fine, but some time the connection is just lost. I went menu System->Admin->Network and see the interface eth0, but I cannot activate or deactivate. The status is inactive. (when the connect works, the status is active). so I try "ifdown eth0" and "ifup eth0" command, and got

"Error: Connection activation failed: Device not managed by NetowrkManger

The menu System->Admin->Network device control show no interface.

I am not sure what happened.

Fedora :: Unable To Activate The Network

Jul 30, 2009

Installed Fedora 11 yesterday and was trying to use the Admin->Software Update but initially it complained about no connectivity (this is happening even though I was able to browse the web via FireFox!). So I went to Admin -> Services, and restart the Network Manager. It was then able to download about 250 updates. However, when I clicked on Install after the download, it says it was disconnected. When I went into Admin->Networking, I found out that the eth0 interface is Inactive. However, the Activate button is greyed out. I have been searching in the User Guide, the FAQ, the bugs section and have been unable to find out how to fix this. If I goto the command prompt, and typed in "ifconfig" I can also see that there is no IP and no packets transferred.

Fedora Networking :: Cannot Activate Via System-config-network?

May 28, 2009

I've been running F10 since it first came out, and I was happy to see it was the first Fedora release that automatically recognized my Atheros wireless card. I have to run system-config-network and press the "activate" button when I start the machine, but that's ok and no big deal. But today, for whatever reason,in system-config-network, the "activate" and "deactivate" buttons are grayed out and I cannot start the device so I have no network access. When I boot the machine into Windows, it works fine.

Fedora Networking :: Can't "activate" Wireless Device WUSB54GC?

Sep 23, 2009

I installed Fedora 11 last night, and it seemed to go OK. The trouble is, I cannot get a wireless connection to the internet. The system seems to recognize my wireless USB adapter, but the buttons to activate the device remain grayed-out no matter what I try. I ran through all of the steps in the help menu (still grayed-out); I tried deleting and adding the device (no go); I tried to run the installation disk that came with the USB adapter (wouldn't run); I pulled the drivers off of the installation disk (Fedora couldn't recognize the file type); I changed it from "wlan" to "eth0" to "eth1"... but still no love!

This doesn't seem like a problem between the adapter and the router... the USB adapter and my PC can see each other, but can't "talk" to each other.

Info:
PC - Dell Optiplex GX50 (circa 2001)
OS - Fedora 11
USB adapter - Linksys WUSB54GC
Wireless Router - Linksys WRT54G (reflashed with dd.wrt)
