Fedora Installation :: How And When To Load Kernel Module In Boot Up Process?

Jul 19, 2010

For a diskfull node (the OS installed in a disk), I can use the 'insmod' command to insert a kernel module into the kernel. And after the reboot, the module is still in the kernel. I have a question here: how, when and which kernel module will be loaded in the boot up process for a diskfull node? And for the diskless node, can I use the chroot or some other ways to install the kernel modules into ramdisk, so that kernel module can work when the diskless node boot up? I think it needs certain mechanism to load the kernel like the boot up of diskfull node.

Is there a way I can cancel the daemon from loading or get to the grub menu (not readily visible since I am single boot) and then boot into a console?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Find Boot File / Won't Load Anything

Aug 21, 2010

My internal hard drive developed a problem (probably from a fall) and needs to be replaced. In the meantime I've decided to use my external hard drive to hold a version of Linux (ubuntu 10.04) until I am able to replace the internal hard drive. For some reason I am unable to get the external drive to accept the recovery disks I have for Windows 7.

What I'm having issues with is that after installing the Ubuntu OS on to the external, I reboot the PC and it tells me it cannot find a boot file, and won't load anything. I have to run the live cd version of the OS to get anything to work right.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 On PS3 No Boot - Install CD Doesn't Load

Oct 14, 2010

has anybody tried 10.10 on their PS3 (FW 3.15)? I first ran an update from 10.04 (which was working fine, including ext4 FS), and upon rebooting after the update, all I had was a black screen after PetitBoot. I then tried to do a clean install with the 10.10 PPC+PS3 Alternate CD, but same black screen after selecting any type of install from CD in PetitBoot. I then installed the OtherOS that's on the 10.10 CD (KBoot); same black screen. Went back to PetitBoot and tried the PS3 desktop 10.10 CD; same problem. I was almost ready to give up and reinstall 10.04 when I thought of using the "linux-old" option in PetitBoot. This loaded the newly upgraded Ubuntu 10.10 on my HD, with the difference that it's using kernel 2.6.32 instead of 2.6.35. This works fine. So here's my question (at last ): was the PS3 port of 10.10 tested by anyone before being pushed as a release on cdimage.ubuntu.com, or is there an incompatibility with kernel 2.6.35 that was never noticed, except for here where it didn't seem to go anywhere: [URL]? If I'm the only one left on earth with firmware 3.15 and interested in Ubuntu on PS3 at this point.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows XP Won't Load In Dual Boot - Error 17?

Jan 18, 2010

I managed somehow to successfully install a dual boot with Ubuntu 9.02 and Windows XP. Ubuntu was on a PATA drive and the WinXP was on a SATA drive. The SATA drive was configured to boot first. As I was having problems with Ubuntu I booted into WinXP, re-formatted the PATA drive, then restarted the computer and installed Ubuntu 9.10. It all went well.I rebooted the machine and the following message was on the screen:

GRUB Loading stage1.5.GRUB Loading, please wait....Error 17

I rebooted, changed the boot order so that the PATA disk (Ubuntu) started first, then the SATA(WinXP). Ubuntu loaded up the dual boot screen.I chose WINXP, but I was greeted with a black screen.I rebooted again and chose to load Ubuntu, which it did without a hitch.what I should do to restore my access to WinXP? Or should I start again? If so, how?

General :: Dual Boot Installation - Cannot Load From Hard Disk

Mar 19, 2010

I'm having installation issues with linux. I'm trying to set up a dual boot with vista and linux. I prepared my computer by backing up my files and partitioning my hard drive, leaving 20GB for linux. I downloaded Linux Mint 7, and booted from USB (using the universal USB installer from pendrivelinux.com). All good, entered into linux and installed by following the prompts (selecting use largest unallocated partition to point linux to the partition). At this stage the screen cleared to just leave me with the desktop background.

I patiently waited for it to reboot which never happened. So I waited for 20mins or so, then shut the computer down because I couldn't think of what else to do. When I restarted (without using the livecd/usb) it just went straight to vista. I did a bit of reading and found it might have been something to do with vista taking over grub, and some of the tutorials suggested downloading EasyBCD. So I did that, here's the summary:

Code:
There are a total of 2 entries listed in the Vista Bootloader.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Load LiveUSB And Slow Boot After Forced Shutdown

Mar 30, 2011

I experienced what i perceive as the craziest thing during 2 years of using ubuntu. About some months ago, I have two ubuntu installed on my HP-mini netbook: ubuntu 10.04 64 bit (CAElinux) and kubuntu 10.04, and run without problem.

One day, the netbook's battery run out of charge and I forgot to plug it in. The ubuntu, as usual, went to hibernate, but without harddisk noise, so I forced it to shutdown by pressing power button (as i think it is not normal). What happened later was the partition of 10.04 was broken, it could not boot, it even affected another partition as the netbook couldn't boot kubuntu 10.04.

I try to run liveUSB and CD of both distro and the liveCD/USB boot stopped on loading screen. So I try another linux distro: PCLinuxOS, which was able to boot but took very long time. The partition of ubuntu 10.04 could not be accessed.

After installing PClinuxOS in replace of kubuntu, I scanned the ubuntu 10.04 partition and the partition was fixed, I could access the partition and could load to ubuntu 10.04, but it took very long time. Here how it loaded: first: blank screen with blinking cursor, then ubuntu load screen, then back to blank screen with blinking cursor, then it showed numbers and sentences, like some scanning works. It took long time before login screen appeared (about 10-15 minute, while the prevously normal boot time in my netbook was less than 1 minute), but once its done, the ubuntu worked normally. This also the case in the PClinuxOS and the reason it load very slowly.

After this, I try to boot the liveUSB of various linux distro, and found some could boot while the others not:

Able to load with unusual slow boot time:
PClinuxOS (latest)
Ubuntu 8.04
Fedora (latest)
Linuxmint 8 (based on ubuntu 9)

Can't load
ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10
kubuntu 10.04
latest linuxmint

The liveUSB boot could take 1 hour. I also try the latest Puppy, Gentoo and OpenSuse liveUSB but it couldn't boot, and it likely the liveUSB problem. I made the all the liveUSB with unetbootin. The ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, kubuntu and the latest linuxmint could not boot even after I scanned the ubuntu 10.04 partition. There was no problem with the liveUSB as it would load normally on another computer. I think it is just the variant of ubuntu 10 that is not being able to boot.

I was not content on this slow boot, so I try to format the two partition of ubuntu and PClinuxOS (there are another partitions though), and installed ubuntu 8. But it also happened to boot slowly as the previous ubuntu. Then I replaced it with linuxmint 8, and the same occurred. So I try to install windows on another partition, and it boot normally.

The question is, what is happening. Why do the forced-shutdown-of-ubuntu-10.04 affect another partition, to the boot of another distro? If my HD was broken, the Windows would load very slowly too right? Yes, in SMART Data (from disk utility) it showed "few bad sector", but i think this is not related to the slow boot. The ubuntu 10.04, 10.10, kubuntu and the latest linuxmint cannot boot until this moment. I am thinking there are some informations planted on my computer, that twist it to load some distro slowly, and prevent it to load some others. But where and what? (I almost arrived to the thought that this is supernatural!)

Because of my long story up there (as I think it must be reported), the conclusion is:
1. Ubuntu 10.04 on my netbook was forced shutdown (by me)
2. It caused the partition broken
3. After fixing the partition (by scan, but I forgot the command), it took very long time to boot, but the ubuntu itself run normally
4. It also affected the boot of another distro (slow down the boot time), but Ms.Windows boot time is normal
5. It also caused ubuntu 10 (and its variant) to not be able to boot from liveCD/USB
6. It also caused me going crazy

Now im gonna format the whole HD in hope of ubuntu 10.04 (and later) could boot again, but shall it fix the problem? (as formatting the previously ubuntu 10.04 partition did not solve the problem). Or should I buy another HD (or even computer) to install natty!

Red Hat / Fedora :: Change The Service Load Or Boot Order On My CentOS 5.3 Box?

Jun 2, 2009

I'm running into a strange problem trying to change the service load or boot order on my CentOS 5.3 box.

The service in question is shorewall. When I go to my /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/, I notice that shorewall is listed a S27shorewall. I need it to start much later. So I run a simple command "mv S27shorewall S99shorewall"

I then restart the server. But after the reboot, something has reset it back to S27shorewall.

For those of you who like the background story: I need to change it to S99shorewall, because I need shorewall to start AFTER xend does all its stuff, as xend messes around with the underlying networking of the computer. The xend stuff was at S98 and S99...but I was able to successfully rename them back to S97 and S98, and the rename stuck. I've also renamed other service orders. Those stick. The only one that gets reset is shorewall, always back to S27. I have no clue how to tell what is causing the resetting...

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Screen Doesn't Show And Installation Media Won't Load

Jun 7, 2010

I've got a dual-booting system with Windows 7 and Opensuse 11.2. I had a few other random kernels so I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove them. This was fine after a reboot, then I went to YaST and changed the default boot partition to Windows, because I had edited the MBR and put Windows above the other boot partitions, YaST changed "default" to 0.

Now after a restart the Boot Loader doesn't appear, I just have a flashing cursor. When I try to boot from an OpenSuse installation disc and try repair the Repair Kernel loads but freezes on the OpenSuse splash screen. I've heard this is due to the fact I have an ATI Radeon card, if I hold shift during the CD load to prevent the graphical interface of the CD loading. I can type to boot "rescue" but it freezes on "starting udev...". Essentially I just need to be able to edit menu.lst back to the backup I made or change the "default" value back to 1.
