Fedora :: Get A Daemon To Load On Boot?
Mar 12, 2011
I was trying to get a daemon to load on boot, I stupidly added it to rc.local and it just hangs. I would love to put in a live CD and edit out the line but the volume is encrypted and I cannot get it to mount.
Is there a way I can cancel the daemon from loading or get to the grub menu (not readily visible since I am single boot) and then boot into a console?

I'm having trouble booting after a recent bunch of updates (haven't been able to boot F12 from hard disk for a couple of days). The boot process gets as far as "NetworkManager daemon [OK]", then just stops. I get this for all 3 kernels that I can choose from the grub menu (2.6.32.16-141, 2.6.32.14-127, 2.6.32.12-115)Mounting the hard drive with a liveUSB, a quick inspection of /var/log/messages reveals that things go smoothly until: etc. until I hit the power button.I ought to mention that I wireless card that requires the Realtek RTL8192SE driver, which requires
Code:
sudo su
make

If I turn off the quiet mode in the boot options, it does throw up some errors (e.g. SQASHFS), and then stops after "starting abrt daemon".
On an AMD Athelon. It worked fine of F9, but started playing up, so I'm looking at upgrading.

I downloaded F10 x86_64 live Developer Spin ISO file from fedora project spins website and burned it onto a DVD...Now when I try to boot from it, I get a menu as usual. Here I select the 'boot' option. Now it shows a 'loading' page with a progress bar and 'Fedora 10' written on the right side [as usual].. After that, on the next page I get the following error..
error: unexpectedly disconnected from boot status daemon I somehow did a reboot, and again the same problem. Microsoft XP and another Fedora are already installed on the same system..

Have had a clean perfectly working copy of 2.6.31.6-166 for months and after two updates to 2.6.31.12-174.2.3 and 2.6.31.12-174.2.19, neither of the newer kernel versions will allow machine to boot properly. Start-up hangs at the preload daemon with a flickering screen. To use machine, must use grub chooser and choose the original base kernel.
Running on Tyan h2000m board, opteron 2356, Nvidia 9800 GTX+ and 12GB of dram with SELinux security enabled.

I just upgraded to F15 and it went well. But at the next and each subsequent cold boot the BIOS reports "Your system last boot fail or post interrupted Please enter setup to load default and reboot". The board is an asus P5N-D. I press F1 to blow past the error and all is well until the next cold boot. Restarts are fine, no errors at all.

configured /etc/sysconfig/vncserver, used vncpasswd as the user im trying to log in as to set passwd, disabled firewalls, set chkconfig --add vncserver but still whenever i try to connect to the vnc server I get "unable to connect to host: Connection refused (10061)". If I run the "vncserver" command as my normal user, I can connect fine then. This really wearing on me, any help is greatly appreciated. It is weird if I try to stop vncserver it says [ok] and then if I try to stop again it says [Failed] but if I check the status of vncserver it says Xvnc is running..

For a diskfull node (the OS installed in a disk), I can use the 'insmod' command to insert a kernel module into the kernel. And after the reboot, the module is still in the kernel. I have a question here: how, when and which kernel module will be loaded in the boot up process for a diskfull node? And for the diskless node, can I use the chroot or some other ways to install the kernel modules into ramdisk, so that kernel module can work when the diskless node boot up? I think it needs certain mechanism to load the kernel like the boot up of diskfull node.

I'm running into a strange problem trying to change the service load or boot order on my CentOS 5.3 box.
The service in question is shorewall. When I go to my /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/, I notice that shorewall is listed a S27shorewall. I need it to start much later. So I run a simple command "mv S27shorewall S99shorewall"
I then restart the server. But after the reboot, something has reset it back to S27shorewall.
For those of you who like the background story: I need to change it to S99shorewall, because I need shorewall to start AFTER xend does all its stuff, as xend messes around with the underlying networking of the computer. The xend stuff was at S98 and S99...but I was able to successfully rename them back to S97 and S98, and the rename stuck. I've also renamed other service orders. Those stick. The only one that gets reset is shorewall, always back to S27. I have no clue how to tell what is causing the resetting...

I have a Fedora 12 system that I am trying to configure with 3 IP addresses on one NIC card. I created scripts for each of the connections I want in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ and they are called ifcfg-eth0, ifcfg-eth0:1, ifcfg-eth0:2. If I run /sbin/services network restart it configures everything as I would like. When I restart the computer the only device configured is eth0 and it is set to DHCP. If I run the script again everything works. What am I missing to make this change persistent?

I installed Centos 5.5 yesterday and discovered that the hal daemon was failing to start on boot.
The messages showed that the hal daemon was hanging because nss_ldap could not connect to the ldap server. It eventually failed and the system came up multiuser without it.
When I started looking into the problem I discovered that hald was being started quite early in the boot process. It's sequence number was 26 (if I remember correctly). This was even before nscd.
If I chkconfiged it off and booted, I could start it successfully once the system was up.
I changed the sequence number to 98 and bring it up relatively close to the end of the boot process.
This works and it starts normally.
Is starting it as early as 26 in the boot process done for a reason? It seems to me that it should definitely not be started before nscd. Does it matter that I moved it to the end of the boot process?

I am running a recently built Debian 'Lenny' system 5.0.4.I used the gui install and asked for desktop/file server/ I created a raid 1 systemsing two similar drives. Finally I set up some samba shares to use from my (wife's) windows PC. I wanted to use PC names rather than IP adresses to access the shares so activated wins.My Debian system, called arcturus, did not appear in windows network places. After much trial and error and googling found that the nmbd service had stopped.'/etc/init.d/samba restart' reported nmbd not present, stopped smbd and then restarted both. My networking then all came to life. There is a Ubuntu forum discussion around this subject and the consensus seems that the samba daemons are starting before the network is properly established. I have installed a work-around by putting the restart line in /etc/rc.local.But I'm concerned that I have some kind of configuration error. The following is a section of my log.nmbd after setting logging to level 3:-
Initialising global parameters

params.c:pm_process() - Processing configuration file "/etc/samba/smb.conf"

I installed VSFTPD via: sudo gedit /etc/vsftpd.conf
I can start/stop using the following:
sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd start
sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd stop
By default, the daemon loads at boot but I don't want/need it to. I executed the following command thinking it would stop it from loading at boot code...
Can anyone tell me how to stop the VSFTPD daemon from loading at boot?

I am having some trouble making the dropbox daemon start at boot. I followed these instructions -> [URL], which are basically a replica of the original instructions from the Dropbox Wiki [URL]. The installation went fine, except that the machine still cannot start the daemon at boot. I tried to modify the init.d script a bit (see the attachment), but it still wont work (I am not sure if my changes made any significant difference, though). The daemon will only start if I invoke it manually after login with the command:
Code:
[user@machine:~]$ service dropbox start
Which executes the daemon just fine. I also tried adding this line of code to crontab:
Code:
@reboot /etc/init.d/dropbox start
This command starts the daemon if I check with the command "service dropbox status", but if I execute the official dropbox CLI command:
Code:
~/bin/dropbox.py status
it says that Dropbox isn't running and I still have to execute it manually.
P.s.: The machine runs Ubuntu Server 10.04, with all the latest system patches and updates.

What's the best way to register a daemon to start up at boot time in lucid? I have tried registering the following script using "sudo update-rc.d"
Code:
This is supposed to get the daemon for opentftp started, but it does nothing, although I can see the results of the "echo 'Server opentftpd started' " in the boot log in /var/log .Any thoughts or general help on what the best way to accomplish such a task is?

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:
[Code]...
What do I need to do to make GRUB load again upon booting?

Does anyone know of the app or could point me in the direction of a similar app.

Have been running ubuntu for sometime now and love its functionality...However since a recent update have the following issues..When I power on the laptop I get the toshiba logo followed by grub loading with the message ' invalid enviroment block" "unable to load default boot entries". When I then try to run the laptop off a LiveCd, the ubuntu splash screen appears with the loading process bar (horizontal line) displayed..however it then appears to display a black screen with no further activity..Now all of this is via an external monitor as my laptop screen shows no activity right from the very start with just a blank screen....so am really stuck here wondering if its a harware/software issue or a combination of both...

I'm new to Fedora and have just purchased a subscription to a GoDaddy Virtual Dedicated Server, which I'm able to control using SSH.I have a Java application that I want to run as a daemon on this VDS. Some google searching yielded a bunch of different methods of doing this, none of which I'm sure would be guaranteed to work with Fedora, so I was hoping someone here could give it to me straight and fill me in on the simplest way of doing this. What is the best/simplest way to run a Java application as a daemon on Fedora?
