Fedora Installation :: 11 Can't Install On Software Raid0

Aug 31, 2009

Because of all the trouble with the asrock 939SLi-eSATA2 (see my previous unsolved thread) I have bought a new MSI 790FX-GD70 mobo + processor +ram3 memory and shifted my MSI K9N2-platinum to the asrock box and mothballed the asrock mobo. A rigorous way to solve the problem, but it turned out to be the beginning of more severe trouble. When I try to install Fedora on the striped disks at first everything looks good. Both gparted and the installer see the linux device mapper partitions on the raid config + the unused space.But if I tell the installer to use the unused space, a mere 150 gig, then it tells me:

Could not allocate requested partitions: not enough free space on the disks. The same happens if I try the custom layout. When I start with a small 200 mB ext3 boot partition the same message appears.The ubuntu live cd with dmraid installed and the ubuntu alternate cd do not even see the devmapper partitions. Is the AMD-ATI chip on this new mobo not properly supported by Fedora/Ubuntu?

Fedora Installation :: 13 - Raid0 - Graphic Card Or Something Else

Oct 11, 2010

I've already got two installs without much problems.. one on my laptop and another fedora13 install on an older comp just to test it a bit before installing it on my main comp. But now I've got a problem. Both those install went without problems but when I started installation on my main comp first I've noticed some graphic problems when there is installation started and there is mouse and fedora 13 welcome installation screen. there are some like glitches or something no idea how to describe them.. like bad pixels in small upper part of the screen. But ignoring that everything went OK up to the part where I can choose a standard discs or non starts like sans and stuff..

When I choose standard disc installation just freeze there. No idea what is happening. Only this that came across my mind is that there is a problem with raid maybe? There are 2x640Gb HDD in raid0, there is win7 installed, and another 1Tb HDD, non-raid member disk, where I would like to install Fedora and have a dual boot. Still got programs that I need win for I'm afraid. Installation went smooth on laptop and another comp but there is no raid so I'm guessing that could be a problem. This comp where installation froze is in short:

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot With Win7 On Raid0 - Install 10.04 It Will Hang And Eventually Errors Out?

Apr 18, 2010

New to Linux and am wanting to install ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04 on a single separate 80gb drive. I have Windows installed on 2 80gb drives in Raid0 (nvidia controller) .I have installed 9.10 but Win7 will not load from the bootloader : gives me the error invalid signature. I've looked around and tried a few things to get it to load with no success.. is the Raid0 the issue?

If I try to install 10.04 it will hang and eventually errors out, I believe on the raid drive because it comes up with dev/mapper/nvidia_hhfbdccf1..

Ubuntu Installation :: Wubi On Windows With RAID0

Feb 1, 2011

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 using Wibu inside Windows and installation looks good without any problems but when I select Ubuntu in Boot POST menu after I see Ubuntu Desktop I see error it's saying that Root directory is not specified and there is OK button and if I press it I see same message. only way to get out is to click restart in top right corner. My Windows installation is on RAID0 SSDs and I actually tried to install it on same partition as windows and even tried to install on NEW unallocated and freshly formatted partition. Nothing works. I am thinking to install it from Live CD however in advance formatting on let's say 20gb of space what do i assign ? Like how do I partition it like root directory and swap and other partition i ll need. Like can you specify all I think 3 different partitions I'll need and how much space to allocate for each on let's say 20GB of space.

I remember I had a choice "Use all free space" and it was soo simple I could have windows and some unallocated space on hard drive and Ubuntu would of use it . Now I don't see this option. I see use entire disk ...or advanced where You have to create on unallocated space all parts of partitions needed that's

Debian Installation :: Partition Alignment On SSDs In MD RAID0?

Feb 15, 2015

I have two SSDs on which I have configured md RAID 0, with a 16 KB chunk size. My understanding is that Wheezy (and later) installations are smart enough to align partitions on block boundaries, even in md RAID configurations, but to satisfy my own natural distrust, how do I go about actually confirming that it has done the right thing? I have a single root logical volume within an LVM partition, but neither the logical volume nor the LVM partition occupy all available space, and the LVM partition is offset from the end of the disk.

My concern arises from the fact that, when I look at the sysfs entry for my root partition:

# cat /sys/devices/virtual/block/md126/md126p4/start
804818048

This number is not evenly divisible by 4096.

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting 10.04 To RAID Drive With Root On RAID0?

Mar 21, 2011

I ran into this and found a non-trivial solution so I thought I'd share in case anyone else ran into it.I have two 200GB drives so I thought I'd install my system with RAIDed partitions for /boot, / and /home. I would use RAID1 for /boot and /home because GRUB2 can load the kernel from a RAID1 and I thought the extra reliability for /home would be nice. (I may second guess /home on RAID1 once I get to test performance.) I chose RAID0 for / to provide faster application loading.I prepared the drives using a Live CD because I'm not confident that I can do what needs to be done during installation.First I partitioned the drives as:

Code:

hbarta@olive:~$ sudo fdisk -luc /dev/sda
Disk /dev/sda: 200.0 GB, 200049647616 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 24321 cylinders, total 390721968 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes

[code]....

At this point I could restart and boot from the system hard drives and proceed with configuring my system. I'm not positive that it is necessary to add the modules to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules but I do know that alone is not sufficient. An earlier attempt was to install grub (install-grub /dev/sda; install-grub /dev/sdb) within the chroot and I found that also was not sufficient. I have not listed it above because I think it was not necessary. But on these two issues, I'm not going to reinstall again from scratch just try...

[URL]

Another possibility is to install using the Alternate CD. I did not try that but it may provide better RAID handling. Last week I installed 10.04.2 LTS Server to a RAID1 and it did not experience this problem. However I do not know if it is RAID in general or RAID0 that led to the issues I encountered.

OpenSUSE Install :: How Installer Of 11.3 Deals With INTEL ICH10R Fake RAID0

Jul 15, 2010

I have two 150GB WD Raptors stripped in an INTEL ICH10R RAID0 array. Windows 7 is installed on it in a 100GB partition, there is a 150GB secondary partition, a 100MB system reserved partition created by Windows 7 and there is about 25GB unallocated space to install a linux distribution.My problem is the fake ICH10R RAID which does work only at the moment for me with Fedora Core 13 : Ubuntu 10.04 breaks it but i do not like FC13 very much. So i Googled and Googled for installation problems on this fakeraid and dmraid is involved there is a bug in it at least in Ubuntu 10.04 and openSUSE 11.2, with 11.3 my RAID is detected -> i have a MD RAID popup.

My question is : How to install properly 11.3 on the space left on my fake RAID array without breaking anything although i have a full backup of my system. I don't understand anything of the partitioning part of openSUSE in general. Do i must activate MD RAID, i tried once and my NTFS partitions were not displayed but RAID was detected with the correct size. I am totally lost with this installer.

I want to run Fedora 12 x86_64 on my 2x500GB RAID0 setup, how would I do this via the BIOS method (I want to dual boot Win7 off the same RAID array) with an AMD SB750 southbridge? I'd prefer not to go software, but if I have to I can and just use the 1TB for 7. (I'd prefer not to as the 1TB is a hotswap drive, mostly from PC to External case)

Note: I don't actually have the 1TB Hard Drive or BluRay drive yet, they're still on order)

I searched, but all the results were for Intel's ICH10R or SB600, computer specs are in sig, if there's anything else just say.

Ideally I would like to put two additional in but I am not confident how to configure them. Is this just a case of mapping them in Windows 7.

Server :: Adding Raid0 To Slackware 13.1

Jul 1, 2011

I'm an experienced PC technician running a slackware 13.1 distro on a server at home. I've currently got 2x 1TB drives in the box allocated as raid1 for the OS and everything I want to run on the machine. I'd like to think my question/needs are fairly straight forward, I am buying 2x 2TB drives to add to this machine as it serves as a NAS box for one of its roles. I'd like these in raid0 as the data that would be going on it is not that important to me. The question is, after adding the new drives to the system, once I boot up, what do I need to do to the system to get the drives added and working sucessfully as a single raid0 volume that I can then samba share out to my network. To clarify, I understand a little of mdadm as I've used it to raid1 my existing setup when I installed, and I'm fine with the samba bit after.

Debian Hardware :: LVM - Performance Between A Raid1 And A Raid0 The Same

Mar 21, 2010

I just have a few questions about LVM and RAIDs. It seems they are basically the same thing. Is this correct? I can add two drives together on both of them and it appears as a larger drive, along with other setups like raid1 and raid5, etc.. And is there a difference in performance between them?

And my second question.. I know one is stripped and one is not, but is the performance between a raid1 and a raid0 the same? I've been told that raid1 is faster than raid0 because the data is written twice.. and therefore can be read from two different disks which equals faster read speed, but slower write speed since it writes to the two.

So I backed up all my photos and such to that RAID array (this is on my home server/desktop, by the way) and reinstalled (using the final Ubuntu Server 10.04 disk). When I was re-installing, I stupidly created (but didn't format) a new RAID array over the one with my data on it. Now I'm back on the final Ubuntu Server 10.04, and palimpset recognizes that theres a RAID array, but says its unformatted.

General :: Installing On An Existing Windows RAID0

Dec 19, 2010

I administer a small network of computers connected to a windows 2003 server. The machines Dual boot Windows XP and CentOS 5.

My question is this. The machines are being upgraded to HP Z800 workstations. These workstations come with 2 1TB drives setup on a hardware RAID0. Can I install Linux on these machines, using the RAID0? Can I do an install as if it was just one hard drive? The machines came with Windows7 and I'd like to keep it intact including the RAID0. Can I do the install where it resizes the partition, adding the linux partition to the "drive".

If I can't use the existing windows RAID0 to install CentOS I was thinking of just installing another hard drive in the machines for it. This brings up another question, what would happen if I moved my Linux drive from one of the old workstations and put it in the new workstation, would it boot? I know windows wont boot like this because of the hdd controller drivers and I have a sneaky work around for this anyway but am not wanting to transfer the windows installation.

CentOS 5 Server :: RAID0+1 Or Other Setup For 4 Drives?

Mar 30, 2011

I tore down my old ftp server running FreeNAS because it had some issues. I decided to add a couple more drives and install CentOS on it instead. So now I have 4x 2TB drives that I set up yesterday.OS is installed on a usb flash drive exclusively while I chose to set up the 2TB drives in two stripes and then mirrored, for RAID0+1 instead of RAID1+0.

/dev/md0 = drive 1+2 in RAID0
/dev/md1 = drive 3+4 in RAID0
/dev/md2 = md0+md1 in RAID1

Well, the sync time for these two mirrors of blank drives is almost done, having taken some 15+ hours.I chose this setup to have a single 3.6TB file system mirrored to another 3.6TB for "backup". As this is only going to be a headless ftp server, I don't need massive redundancy/backup. A mirror should suffice if I need to pull some files.So now I'm second guessing myself. I'm wondering if it is even worth it to stripe 2 drives into a single volume with such large sync times. Since data xfer will be over internet, I don't require the massive file writing capacity that would be preferable if it were in my home as a NAS. So, the "performance" increase of RAID0 is not strictly mandatory.

I'm wondering if I should just wipe the drives and set them up in JBOD or LVM instead of RAID0 arrays.In case of boot drive failure, I'd be booting a livecd to xfer files elsewhere or recover the boot drive. So, what difference would I see if I were livebooting to md0, md1, md2 for data viewing as opposed to livebooting to an LVM or JBOD array?As an aside, the drives are WD20EARS, which are 4k sectors which I aligned to start at sector 2048 in fdisk.
