CentOS 5 Server :: RAID0+1 Or Other Setup For 4 Drives?

Mar 30, 2011

I tore down my old ftp server running FreeNAS because it had some issues. I decided to add a couple more drives and install CentOS on it instead. So now I have 4x 2TB drives that I set up yesterday.OS is installed on a usb flash drive exclusively while I chose to set up the 2TB drives in two stripes and then mirrored, for RAID0+1 instead of RAID1+0.

/dev/md0 = drive 1+2 in RAID0
/dev/md1 = drive 3+4 in RAID0
/dev/md2 = md0+md1 in RAID1

Well, the sync time for these two mirrors of blank drives is almost done, having taken some 15+ hours.I chose this setup to have a single 3.6TB file system mirrored to another 3.6TB for "backup". As this is only going to be a headless ftp server, I don't need massive redundancy/backup. A mirror should suffice if I need to pull some files. So now I'm second guessing myself. I'm wondering if it is even worth it to stripe 2 drives into a single volume with such large sync times. Since data xfer will be over internet, I don't require the massive file writing capacity that would be preferable if it were in my home as a NAS. So, the "performance" increase of RAID0 is not strictly mandatory.

I'm wondering if I should just wipe the drives and set them up in JBOD or LVM instead of RAID0 arrays. In case of boot drive failure, I'd be booting a livecd to xfer files elsewhere or recover the boot drive. So, what difference would I see if I were livebooting to md0, md1, md2 for data viewing as opposed to livebooting to an LVM or JBOD array? As an aside, the drives are WD20EARS, which are 4k sectors which I aligned to start at sector 2048 in fdisk.

CentOS 5 Server :: RAID0 - Getting Extremely Slow Read / Write Speed

Jun 28, 2010

I am new to Centos and linux in general. I have just got myself a Dell 1950 server with 2x 1T SATA2 hard disks in it. now the server comes with a PERC5i Raid card with 512Mb. Well I put these in raid 0 and the raid card initilzed the disks to 128 writeback and read ahead. When I loaded centos it did not recognize the dell layout so therefore wanted to initalize it again, so I done this as it wanted. Now I created a 80gb boot and o/s partition and a 100gb swap the rest was created into LVM space to run solus vmwear. But I found the raid 0 to be getting extreamly slow read and write speeds.

Example same disks
Desktop PC max 214mb/s windows vista 64
Server with centos 104mb/s

Now I am not sure but I am told that I need to align the o/s with the raid card settings but I have no idea how to do this. How to do this in plain easy step by step instructions. I mean how to calculate it, how to format the disk this way, and what files to edit where if needed. I have spent hours trying to figure out why my raid 0 is slower than a single disk.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Read Files On Software Raid0 Mac Drives?

Mar 21, 2011

I have a set of Mac software RAID 0 drives that my friend gave me for spring break. I need to access a file on the drive in the Extra folder on one of the drives. It contains some startup settings that need to be changed before I can boot it properly. I loaded up ubuntu and tried to access the drive but only the top level files are readable and when I try to access the Extra folder it says "permission denied." The info on the folder permissions tab is User ID: 501 and Group ID: dialout. Owner permissions = r/w, all other groups/users = none. How can I make Ubuntu read/write to this Extra folder?

CentOS 5 :: Poweredge 6450: No Drives Showing On Setup?

Apr 4, 2009

I want to change one of our poweredge 6450 servers over to Linux, specifically CentOS, however, I cannot seem to install the operating system. When I boot to setup, go through the first couple of pages and then go to the page that asks you where to install CentOS, no drives are shown in the list, and I can't continue. I'm guessing there are missing drivers for the SCSI controller or something along that lines, but I'm not sure, and I can't find any answers on Google either.

Fedora :: Run 12 X86_64 On 2x500GB RAID0 Setup?

Apr 13, 2010

I want to run Fedora 12 x86_64 on my 2x500GB RAID0 setup, how would I do this via the BIOS method (I want to dual boot Win7 off the same RAID array) with an AMD SB750 southbridge? I'd prefer not to go software, but if I have to I can and just use the 1TB for 7. (I'd prefer not to as the 1TB is a hotswap drive, mostly from PC to External case)

Note: I don't actually have the 1TB Hard Drive or BluRay drive yet, they're still on order)

I searched, but all the results were for Intel's ICH10R or SB600, computer specs are in sig, if there's anything else just say.

Ubuntu :: Setup A RAID0 Arry Using The Beta Of 10.04?

May 8, 2010

I used Palimpset to set up a RAID0 arry using the beta of 10.04. I, being the neat freak that I am, like to do a clean install between betas and final releases. So I backed up all my photos and such to that RAID array (this is on my home server/desktop, by the way) and reinstalled (using the final Ubuntu Server 10.04 disk). When I was re-installing, I stupidly created (but didn't format) a new RAID array over the one with my data on it. Now I'm back on the final Ubuntu Server 10.04, and palimpset recognizes that theres a RAID array, but says its unformatted.

Red Hat / Fedora :: RAID0 Setup - Running Out Of Storage Space

Feb 3, 2011

I have a Fedora NAS (not built by me) there is a 1 Tera of storage 2x 500 set at raid 0. The server runs Fedora 7/8 I believe which, runs flawlessly. Sadly, I am running out of storage space and would like to add more. Can I just put another drive in the box? If so, what do I need to do and what impact does it have on the existing raid 0 setup. Ideally I would like to put two additional in but I am not confident how to configure them. Is this just a case of mapping them in Windows 7.

Server :: Unable To Setup A NIS Server Setup On CentOS System

Jan 19, 2010

We are trying to set up a NIS server on a CentOS system. We need to have a NIS server which can provide NIS authentication to a couple of clients. We are practically new to all this stuff.

Just googled to find some ideas about installing ypserv and ypbind and portmapper. We did all that and also started them successfully. But now the clients are not able to join to the NIS domain . The error log states "YP_DOMAIN NOT BOUND".

I guess we have not entered the /etc/yp.conf, /etc/hosts files properly. Please let us know the detailed steps to setup a NIS server .

Also, please let us know what entries should go into the different /etc/<file_names>? What is meant by HOSTNAME in the /etc/hosts file?

Is there any other files which need to be changed? Are we missing any steps?

Also to add-on, while executing the ypinit command we faced the following error:

At this point, we have to construct a list of the hosts which will run NIS servers. localhost.localdomain is in the list of NIS server hosts. Please cont inue to add the names for the other hosts, one per line. When you are done with the list, type a <control D>. next host to add: localhost.localdomain next host to add:

The current list of NIS servers looks like this:

Is this correct? [y/n: y] y

Ubuntu Servers :: 9.10 Server/Raid 10 Setup - HDD - Not Recognizing The Full Capacity Of The Drives

Mar 12, 2010

I have a total of 4 hdd's, 500gb 7.2rpm that I would like mirrored using raid 10. As you can see from the image, ubuntu 9.10 server isn't recognizing the full 2tb's. In fact, I'm not even sure about the configuration as I was thinking the HDD's would come up as four 500gb hdds. Instead I have the configuration above set and ready for Ubuntu to be installed on.

1. Is this typical of a server pre-configured from Dell(perc6 raid controller.

2.Why is ubuntu not recognizing the full capacity of the drives especially when it's a server install?

CentOS 5 :: Installing On A Existing Windows RAID0?

Dec 20, 2010

I administer a small network of computers connected to a windows 2003 server. The machines Dual boot Windows XP and CentOS 5. My question is this. The machines are being upgraded to HP Z800 workstations. These workstations come with 2 1TB drives setup on a hardware RAID0. Can I install Linux on these machines, using the RAID0? Can I do an install as if it was just one hard drive? The machines came with Windows7 and I'd like to keep it intact including the RAID0. Can I do the install where it resizes the partition, adding the linux partition to the "drive".

If I can't use the existing windows RAID0 to install CentOS I was thinking of just installing another hard drive in the machines for it. This brings up another question, what would happen if I moved my Linux drive from one of the old workstations and put it in the new workstation, would it boot? I know windows wont boot like this because of the hdd controller drivers and I have a sneaky work around for this anyway but am not wanting to transfer the windows installation.

Server :: Adding Raid0 To Slackware 13.1

Jul 1, 2011

I'm an experienced PC technician running a slackware 13.1 distro on a server at home. I've currently got 2x 1TB drives in the box allocated as raid1 for the OS and everything I want to run on the machine. I'd like to think my question/needs are fairly straight forward, I am buying 2x 2TB drives to add to this machine as it serves as a NAS box for one of its roles. I'd like these in raid0 as the data that would be going on it is not that important to me. The question is, after adding the new drives to the system, once I boot up, what do I need to do to the system to get the drives added and working sucessfully as a single raid0 volume that I can then samba share out to my network. To clarify, I understand a little of mdadm as I've used it to raid1 my existing setup when I installed, and I'm fine with the samba bit after.

CentOS 5 :: 5.2 Installation Hangs On Server With Large Number Of Drives?

Apr 6, 2009

I am attempting to upgrade a system from 4.7 to 5.2 using a (now) DVD drive attached to the onboard IDE. Originally I had tried using a remote NFS image and a USB stick but I thought maybe there was a problem with the image. I can get up to the point of the installation of selecting the keyboard for the system and then it freezes and never goes any further. It doesn't appear to be a kernel panic since I can still switch between consoles.

I've got an MSI K9NGM2-FID with 14 drives in it. It serves as a file server for our backup server. It's got a secondary 4 port Silicon Image SII 3114 SATA card using the sata_sil module, and an old IDE Promise FastTrak TX2000. Technically I could have 16 drives but the 750W PS is walking the fine line on tripping it's self-breaker with the 14 drives and 7 fans. I would like to NOT have to disconnect all of this to do the upgrade.

I thought maybe that running the install using the "noprobe" option would help so it didn't detect and load the modules for the Silicon Image or the Promise cards and detect all of the drives but it still gets stuck on the step after selecting the keyboard. The installation info console and the dmesg console don't really provide any useful information. The installation console says:

INFO : moving (1) to step welcome
INFO : moving (1) to step language
INFO : moving (1) to step keyboard
INFO : moving (1) to step findrootparts

And the last lines of the dmesg console says:

<6>device-mapper: multipath: version 1.0.5 loaded
<6>device-mapper: multipath round-robin: version 1.0.0 loaded
<6>device-mapper: multipath emc: version 0.0.3 loaded

Is there a hidden "debug" option that will turn on a lot of extra logging?

CentOS 5 Server :: Kswapd0 Using 100 Percent CPU - Drives Up System Load

Oct 20, 2010

Our CentOS 5.5 server has an intermittent problem where kswapd0 begins using 100% CPU, driving the system load to 20-30 and higher, and eventually crashes the server. The problem seems to be triggered by an intensive Java process (Lucene indexing), but only once every month or two. Lucene reindexing normally runs every 15 minutes without a problem. When the problem happens, there is still plenty of free RAM (as measured by /usr/bin/free's "buffers/cache" value, which is 1.5GB) and free swap space. The server is running MediaWiki 1.15 with the standard CentOS Apache, PHP, MySQL. My intuition is that this is a kernel/swapper bug.

Kernel info:

CentOS 5 Server :: Email Server Setup Using Sendmail And Dovecot?

Apr 24, 2009

I am trying to set up a mail server on centos5 using sendmail and dovecot, and eventually spamassassin and some antivirus filter as well. I'd also like to get the proper secure auth mechanism set up at some point too. But for starters, I've been having a lot of difficulty trying to even connect to the mail server from a client computer in the local network. I installed Eudora on the client and after some tweaking in dovecot I was able to connect to the mail server, but then when I try to send an email I get a "connection refused" error, with nothing being logged on the server that I can see.

The last time I set up a mail server was Fedora Core 2, so the configuration files have changed a bit to say the least, and I can't really refer back to those to set up this new server. Does anybody know of a good step-by-step doc on getting the mail server going? I've read the man pages and other various readme's, but these really only list out the available options with no really good explanation of what needs to be done to get the mail server going. If there isn't a full write-up on how to do this, I'll put something together when I'm finished so others can use it in the future.

CentOS 5 :: Easiest Way To Mirror Existing Server Setup On A New Server?

We have two CentOS 5 servers in production (web and database). We are setting up a single staging server that will mirror the configurations of these servers as closely as possible. What is the easiest way to ensure the exact same software and configs as the production servers are setup on the new staging server. Our contracted data center provider has already informed us that they do not perform images and NO we do not have physical access to the machines. It is undetermined whether we will be virtualizing the staging server into two virtual servers yet, so for the purposes of this post lets assume we are not. I'm seeking a faster/more precise method than doing this by eye and hand.

Issue now is that a web developer has created a form that he is trying to email from the site, I did not have anything configured for mail and he does not care to write a script that would not require the mail service to be on the web server.

Have configured/reconfigured main.cf multiple times but no success.

Postfix appears to send the outbound email to the queue but never goes out. Have setup mail service for the domain "land***.com" in ISPConfig and tested with a single user created for the domain from the server.

What did I miss in the configuration to get "connection refused"?
