Server :: Adding Raid0 To Slackware 13.1

Jul 1, 2011

I'm an experienced PC technician running a slackware 13.1 distro on a server at home. I've currently got 2x 1TB drives in the box allocated as raid1 for the OS and everything I want to run on the machine. I'd like to think my question/needs are fairly straight forward, I am buying 2x 2TB drives to add to this machine as it serves as a NAS box for one of its roles. I'd like these in raid0 as the data that would be going on it is not that important to me. The question is, after adding the new drives to the system, once I boot up, what do I need to do to the system to get the drives added and working sucessfully as a single raid0 volume that I can then samba share out to my network. To clarify, I understand a little of mdadm as I've used it to raid1 my existing setup when I installed, and I'm fine with the samba bit after.

CentOS 5 Server :: RAID0+1 Or Other Setup For 4 Drives?

Mar 30, 2011

I tore down my old ftp server running FreeNAS because it had some issues. I decided to add a couple more drives and install CentOS on it instead. So now I have 4x 2TB drives that I set up yesterday.OS is installed on a usb flash drive exclusively while I chose to set up the 2TB drives in two stripes and then mirrored, for RAID0+1 instead of RAID1+0.

/dev/md0 = drive 1+2 in RAID0
/dev/md1 = drive 3+4 in RAID0
/dev/md2 = md0+md1 in RAID1

Well, the sync time for these two mirrors of blank drives is almost done, having taken some 15+ hours.I chose this setup to have a single 3.6TB file system mirrored to another 3.6TB for "backup". As this is only going to be a headless ftp server, I don't need massive redundancy/backup. A mirror should suffice if I need to pull some files.So now I'm second guessing myself. I'm wondering if it is even worth it to stripe 2 drives into a single volume with such large sync times. Since data xfer will be over internet, I don't require the massive file writing capacity that would be preferable if it were in my home as a NAS. So, the "performance" increase of RAID0 is not strictly mandatory.

I'm wondering if I should just wipe the drives and set them up in JBOD or LVM instead of RAID0 arrays.In case of boot drive failure, I'd be booting a livecd to xfer files elsewhere or recover the boot drive. So, what difference would I see if I were livebooting to md0, md1, md2 for data viewing as opposed to livebooting to an LVM or JBOD array?As an aside, the drives are WD20EARS, which are 4k sectors which I aligned to start at sector 2048 in fdisk.

CentOS 5 Server :: RAID0 - Getting Extremely Slow Read / Write Speed

Jun 28, 2010

I am new to Centos and linux in general. I have just got myself a Dell 1950 server with 2x 1T SATA2 hard disks in it. now the server comes with a PERC5i Raid card with 512Mb. Well I put these in raid 0 and the raid card initilzed the disks to 128 writeback and read ahead. When I loaded centos it did not recognize the dell layout so therefore wanted to initalize it again, so I done this as it wanted. Now I created a 80gb boot and o/s partition and a 100gb swap the rest was created into LVM space to run solus vmwear. But I found the raid 0 to be getting extreamly slow read and write speeds.

Example same disks
Desktop PC max 214mb/s windows vista 64
Server with centos 104mb/s

Now I am not sure but I am told that I need to align the o/s with the raid card settings but I have no idea how to do this. How to do this in plain easy step by step instructions. I mean how to calculate it, how to format the disk this way, and what files to edit where if needed. I have spent hours trying to figure out why my raid 0 is slower than a single disk.

Software :: Moving Software RAID0 From OpenSUSE To Slackware

Apr 15, 2011

I have a software RAID0 consisting of 2 disks on a machine running openSUSE. RAID was created with help of YAST's Partitioner feature. Now I'm planning to replace Suse with Slackware, so I've run a simulation in virtualbox, creating RAID exactly the same way as it was created on "real" machine, installing Slackware and trying to reassemble it with mdadm.

This is where trouble and confusion begin.

Code:

Then I do a little examination of devices involved:

Code:

Why would the same command give different results for identical drives?

Code:

How come /dev/sdb1 is an inactive md device, but has no superblock, and /dev/sdc1 has correct superblock, but not is an md device?

Slackware :: Adding A Volume To A LUKS/LVM Setup?

Mar 21, 2010

I have been following Alien Bob's README_CRYPT.TXT on the install disk and playing around with LUKS and LVM as highlighted in the section Combining LUKS and LVM. I got this working following the examples in the readme however I now wish to add another volume to the volume group. I have got this working and extended the group with an encrypted volume so it's now bigger. I want the two included physical volumes in the volume group (which are both encrypted) to be opened on bootup.

As it is now I am prompted for a password for the first physical volume (the passwords are set to be the same) and that opens and boots the volume. It has a problem with the second PV I have added and doesn't open this. There are errors on boot up about this and pvdisplay give this:

General :: Adding PCMCIA Network Cards To Slackware 11?

May 3, 2010

I've been searching all over trying to figure out how to get my Slackware box to detect my 2 PCMCIA wired nics. Specs are:

Dell Latitude CPi (old, I know...)
Compaq 10/100 PC Card (series NNB108)
Xircom "Credit Card" Ethernet 10/100+ and Modem 56 (model: CEM56-100.
Slackware 11 (kernel 2.6.21.5)

Both cards work under Ubuntu 9.04 on the same hardware so I know they are both working and linux compatible.

Checking the /var/log/messages file I see entries when I insert or remove the card. States that a PCMCIA card has been added/removed however other than the /messages log entry there is no other activity that I notice. No lights on the NIC card dongles either. Most of the reading I've done on the net indicate that there should be a /etc/pcmcia/network.opts file but I don't even have the /etc/pcmcia directory. Sure would appreciate some guidance on where to go or what to do to get these two PCMCIA nics up and running.

The main question is can I have him 'send' all the mail out but keep the incoming since it's not much going to the primary? Naturally it's yes, but what do I need to look at record wise?I know there are new things like spf, spoofing, etc and when someone get's that message from admin@domain.com, there servers naturally reverse lookup, but he won't be the box that receives for that domain so will it simply not accept?

Debian Hardware :: LVM - Performance Between A Raid1 And A Raid0 The Same

Mar 21, 2010

I just have a few questions about LVM and RAIDs. It seems they are basically the same thing. Is this correct? I can add two drives together on both of them and it appears as a larger drive, along with other setups like raid1 and raid5, etc.. And is there a difference in performance between them?

And my second question.. I know one is stripped and one is not, but is the performance between a raid1 and a raid0 the same? I've been told that raid1 is faster than raid0 because the data is written twice.. and therefore can be read from two different disks which equals faster read speed, but slower write speed since it writes to the two.

Fedora Installation :: 11 Can't Install On Software Raid0

Aug 31, 2009

Because of all the trouble with the asrock 939SLi-eSATA2 (see my previous unsolved thread) I have bought a new MSI 790FX-GD70 mobo + processor +ram3 memory and shifted my MSI K9N2-platinum to the asrock box and mothballed the asrock mobo. A rigorous way to solve the problem, but it turned out to be the beginning of more severe trouble. When I try to install Fedora on the striped disks at first everything looks good. Both gparted and the installer see the linux device mapper partitions on the raid config + the unused space.But if I tell the installer to use the unused space, a mere 150 gig, then it tells me:

Could not allocate requested partitions: not enough free space on the disks. The same happens if I try the custom layout. When I start with a small 200 mB ext3 boot partition the same message appears.The ubuntu live cd with dmraid installed and the ubuntu alternate cd do not even see the devmapper partitions. Is the AMD-ATI chip on this new mobo not properly supported by Fedora/Ubuntu?

I'd prefer not to go software, but if I have to I can and just use the 1TB for 7. (I'd prefer not to as the 1TB is a hotswap drive, mostly from PC to External case)

Note: I don't actually have the 1TB Hard Drive or BluRay drive yet, they're still on order)

I searched, but all the results were for Intel's ICH10R or SB600, computer specs are in sig, if there's anything else just say.

But now I've got a problem. Both those install went without problems but when I started installation on my main comp first I've noticed some graphic problems when there is installation started and there is mouse and fedora 13 welcome installation screen. there are some like glitches or something no idea how to describe them.. like bad pixels in small upper part of the screen. But ignoring that everything went OK up to the part where I can choose a standard discs or non starts like sans and stuff..

When I choose standard disc installation just freeze there. No idea what is happening. Only this that came across my mind is that there is a problem with raid maybe? There are 2x640Gb HDD in raid0, there is win7 installed, and another 1Tb HDD, non-raid member disk, where I would like to install Fedora and have a dual boot. Still got programs that I need win for I'm afraid. Installation went smooth on laptop and another comp but there is no raid so I'm guessing that could be a problem. This comp where installation froze is in short:
