Ubuntu :: Udevd-work Random Error On Boot On Raid0

Oct 12, 2010

I have a Raid0 setup (see below for details) connected to the ICH10R raid chip on my Gigabyte EX58-UD4P motherboard. On every second og third boot I get the following error:

Code:
udevd-work[157]: inotify_add_watch(6, /dev/dm-1, 10) failed: no such file or directory
udevd-work[179]: inotify_add_watch(6, /dev/dm-1, 10) failed: no such file or directory
The system halts for a seconds or two and then boots on like nothing has happend.

My setup is as follows:

Two 500gb discs in Raid0 on the ICH10R. The first partition 100 mb is a Windows 7 system partition (gaming etc.) and then a 300gb partition for the actual Windos install. Then Ubuntu 10.10 with /, /home, /swap and then five data partitions. Grub is on the Windows system partition.

Ubuntu 10.10 x64 installed via USB. No problems during install. Besides that I have 2x300gb dics on the Gigabyte built in raid controller. Installed with a Hackintos setup using Mac software raid.My fstab looks like this:

Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse 11.4-KDE Udevd-work Error While Booting

Jun 25, 2011

I am seeing a udev error message on booting that I have not seen before with LInux and which I cannot interpret. My Suse 11.4-KDE installation is fairly new. My system is a System 76 PanP4 Pangolin that originally ran Ubuntu.Uname -a returns: Linux linux-zcga 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. My video is a Geforce 9300M with an nVidia driver.A Google search turns up the fact that similar error messages have been reported with Fedora, Ubuntu, Meego and Gentoo. These frequently have had something to do with sound and in at least one case the advised correction was to reinstall udev. I can see where bugs were filed but with no clear response. Some of these go back several years, the most recent is within the last few months. I did not see a posting that involved Suse.

1.Can someone tell me what these error messages mean?
2.Does this pose a problem?Everything seems to work normally on my system once I am through the boot process.
3.If this is a problem how does one fix it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lynx X64 On RAID0 Ich10r (dual Boot)

I'm checking isw_dgaehbbiig_RAID_0 as location for loader, assuming that this would be MBR. am i doing this step right?

Debian :: Make A Boot RAID0 LVM On A Pair Of SSDs

Aug 20, 2015

I would like to make a boot RAID0 LVM on a pair of SSDs (sdc and sdd). The system is already running off of a HDD. I built the RAID0 through the Asus BIOS on the Intel controller. I see:

# cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid0]
md124 : active raid0 sdc[1] sdd[0]
59346944 blocks super external:/md126/0 32k chunks
md125 : active raid0 sda[1] sdb[0]
222715904 blocks super external:/md127/0 32k chunks

[code]....

My challenge is that when I open Gparted, it only show one disk at a time. I would like to learn how to use Gparted to partition this RAID0 with a UEFI sector and LVM for the rest.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot With Win7 On Raid0 - Install 10.04 It Will Hang And Eventually Errors Out?

Apr 18, 2010

New to Linux and am wanting to install ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04 on a single separate 80gb drive. I have Windows installed on 2 80gb drives in Raid0 (nvidia controller) .I have installed 9.10 but Win7 will not load from the bootloader : gives me the error invalid signature. I've looked around and tried a few things to get it to load with no success.. is the Raid0 the issue?

If I try to install 10.04 it will hang and eventually errors out, I believe on the raid drive because it comes up with dev/mapper/nvidia_hhfbdccf1..

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Random Flash/Shockwave Objects Refuse To Work In Firefox

Jan 6, 2010

i run ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, using firefox 3.5.6 (courtesy of ubuntuzilla) as my web browser. i've had a problem with some flash and/or shockwave objects simply refusing to work inside firefox, despite having 64-bit flash player and all necessary plugins/addons/extras etc. installed.

there is no pattern to the problems, other than all of them being flash or shockwave objects that won't play. the majority of videos videos do play, including hd ones. however, this morning i encountered a pair of videos clips that simply would not play. i could load the page they were on, but all i ever saw was a black box, with no audio, where the video should have been.

i also noticed that on some of the videos that do play, the flash player's built-in volume control does nothing. i can slide it up or down or mute it entirely, but the sound from the flash video is unaffected.

i'll post urls of the problem videos later, so others can try them.

meanwhile i was able to watch other videos videos without issue, on another tab, aside from the broken flash player volume control.

i've also had a problem with the [url] player for a radio station, which i believe uses shockwave. i like to listen to atlanta, ga's wsb 750 am radio in the mornings before work, but so far i have to do it on a virtual windows xp machine running firefox 3.5.6, under virtualbox. if i try to open the player in firefox 3.5.6 running in the host os (ubuntu 9.10), i get only a blank popup window. url is [url]; click the "listen live" box at upper left to try it.

both machines, the host ubuntu 9.10 install and the guest windows xp machine, use exactly the same ad-blocking hosts file. i use the noscript addon in the host os install of firefox, but i allow any and all scripts when visiting the radio station's website.

since the streaming radio works on the virtual xp machine, i'm pretty sure my network configuration, hosts file etc. have nothing to do with this.

has anyone else had this problem? the flash content really should be agnostic with respect to the host os and browser, shouldn't it?

i guess it could be some random problem with the 64-bit vs. the 32-bit version of the flash plugin, so i may try instaling 32-bit ubuntu on a virtual machine to find out whether there's a difference.

CentOS 5 :: Updated To 2.6.18-164.1 UDEV Failed Udevd-event[1361]?

May 12, 2010

I haven't updated my centos box for almost about a year, my theory is if it ain't broke don't fix it.These last two weeks I've been replacing hardware, a motherboard, memory, processor, and a hard-disk. Everything worked fine with the current 2.6.18-128.1.10, but I decided that I should upgrade to the latest along with all the new packages. But in doing so I would need to recompile the driver module for the raid controllers, rr1740. So I recompiled them using the 2.6.18-164.1 build while I was in kernel 128. When I was done, I restarted the machine and when it booted to the new 164 kernel, it came back very long error messages but here's what I can remember off the top of my head.

Ubuntu :: Random Kernels Don't Boot

Sep 17, 2010

I seem to be having a problem booting into ubuntu 10.04 (and 9.10 before I upgraded a while back). It's been ongoing for a while now, but I can't seem to actually even get to the login screen. Some kernels just give me a blank screen, and others hang at the ubuntu logo (http://i.cbsi.com.au/story_media/339...ic-koala_1.jpg). It seems to be totally random, and I can't seem to even narrow down which kernels do what. It seems to be a game every time I reboot. Perhaps it has something to do with the beta 2.6.32-rc6 kernel I installed (by clicking on the .deb) a while back? I'm not too sure how to uninstall it, but I first installed it I think back at 9.04, and it always seems to be the first option in grub. Can I clean out my old kernels somehow? Or is that dangerous?

Maybe it's caused by graphics drivers? "Safe mode" doesn't seem to work any better though. And I can't get to the TTY terminals by <ctrl><alt><1-6> either, which would suggest to me that it isn't a graphics issue? I don't see the login screen, nor do I always see the splash screen.

Ubuntu :: SSH Server Only Wants To Work On The Very First Boot Of A Clean Install - No Route To Host Error

Apr 22, 2011

Ok so I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 Server Edition. On the very first boot, everything seems to run perfectly. I can SSH into it from any remote computer with no problems. However, the installation of certain things calls for a system reboot, which 2 days ago never would have been a problem. But now for some reason, the SSH server only wants to work on the very first boot of a clean install. After I reboot it, I get the ssh: connect to host 192.168.0.180 port 22: No route to host error. The absurd part is sshd is running! I've even tried restarting sshd, restarting the server, and using both 64 and 32 bit installs. The only way I can get anything to connect to it is by using ssh localhost. It won't even let me connect using the IP on the local machine!

...it doesn't crash at this point though. I ran memtest86 twice and did not experience any problems. I updated the BIOS to the newest version, which contained a few bug fixes, but still experienced the same problems

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Random Error - Could Not See SATA Drive ?

May 6, 2011

I experienced a strange random error that appears to have been my PC losing contact with the PC's 1.5 TB SATA drive.

This happened once (thus far only once - about two hours ago) on my Intel Core i7 920 PC with a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 mother board running openSUSE-11.4 with KDE-4.4.4. A reboot failed to fix the problem but a cold shut down restart did.

Some details ...

I had a zillion apps open, connected to my mother's PC in North America (from here in Europe) using vnc, had thunderbird, firefox, many konsole sessions, and various leafpad editor sessions.

Firefox appeared to hang, so I tried to close the Firefox page, but the PC appeared frozen (although the mouse would move). Then after about 60 seconds, the screen flashed, firefox closed (crashed may be more accurate) and I had my desktop back, ... sort of .... And I was able to go to the desktop area where vnc was running and access my mother's PC. But I was missing almost all the icons off my KDE destkop and most the icons off the panel at the bottom of the desktop.

I tried going to <CTRL><ALT><F1> and then <CTRL><ALT><F7> but that made no difference. I tried going to <CTRL><ALT><F1> to login but it would not let me login as a regular user, nor as root. Nor could I ssh into the PC. After <CTRL><ALT><F7> back at the crippled GUI, I typed 'shutdown -r now' (as root) but the command was not recognized. Neither was 'top' (as a regular user), nor 'fdisk' (as root). Dir was recognized as a regular user as was CD. But I did not believe the information those commands were giving me (it did not appear up to date).

Eventually I killed X with <CTRL><ALT><Backspace> (twice) and then forced a shutdown start with <CTRL><ALT><DELETE>, but then the PC hung during the shutdown, with the hard drive light on solid. That never happens. After a minute of that I decided to hit the 'hardware' reset. The PC restarted, but was incredibly slow to go through the motherboard boot menu's and it reported the hard drive not detected and would not boot. I did a <CTRL><ALT><DELETE> to restart, and pressed DEL to go to BIOS, and then noted in BIOS that the SATA drive was not detected.

I checked the temperature and the PC was a nominal cool temperature (38 to 40 deg c).

I then switched OFF the PC. I also turned the OFF switch on the back OFF for good measure. I waited a minute. And I turned ON again the PC.

The PC booted normally as if nothing had happened.

Most bizarre and a bit of a fright. My Linux is usually rock solid.

Anyway, ... no more investigation for now. I'm doing a massive backup of all data since my last backup. This will take a while as I have about 400 GB of home movies (at various stages of processing) from my home video camera to backup to an external hard drive.

I may pickup another 2TB external drive this weekend, just to ensure I have multiple backups.

Ubuntu Installation :: Random Naming Of Disks At Each Boot After Upgrade To 10.04 / Fix It?

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid & 2.6.36-1 Kernel: Random Freeze After Boot

Oct 26, 2010

I am using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 (64 bits) in my Asus U30JC laptop (Core i3 M350, intel 4500MHD + nvidia 310M with nvidia Optimus, 4GB RAM). I am content with Lucid and I don't want to upgrade to 10.10 for now. However I read that the new 2.6.36 kernel has some good improvements, such as improving system interactivity while intensive I/O (such as copying large files), and improved energy management for i3/i5 processors (which I hope translates into more battery time, which is a problem of Ubuntu vs Win7 in my laptop).

I discovered I had 2 options: compile the kernel myself, or use the Ubuntu Kernel PPA (maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team). I decided to use the PPA, so I added it to my software sources and installed the generic"linux-lts-backport-natty" kernel (2.6.36-1).

Package installation went fine, and after reboot, I could log in to the desktop no problem. Everything seemed fine, but after a few minutes, the system freezes completely: mouse did not move, none of the indicators moved, even Ctrl + Alt + F1 did not work.Where is the log file where there might be a message related to the freeze? Do you think that the kernel developers would try to fix a bug that probably only affects people running the 2.6.36-1 kernel on a distribution that was not built around it?

Hardware :: Random Boot Kernel Panic With MPT Fusion SCSI?

Aug 2, 2010

I have an IBM server with a: "SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI (rev 07)", meaning kernel module CONFIG_FUSION. This is the real hardware, not emulated by vmware. With recent kernels (2.6.30-35) the boot results in one of three situations:

1.) Most common: kernel panic, way too long stack dump to see anything useful but did have a terminal briefly to debug this and its just not being able to communicate with the scsi subsystems, google for errors found nothing of use.

2.) Sometimes: A hang waiting for the scsi disks after the controller fails to initialize properly, does not pass in a couple of hours.

3.) Very rarely: A long wait for the scsi controller to initialize but a succesful boot afterwards. ACPI subsystems are taking all CPU power. This is the state the machine is at now, working somewhat.

I can boot the machine with a Gentoo live install disk (kernel 2.6.29 I think) and under that version the controller initializes instantly and there are no problems whatsover using the disks so the hardware seems to be solid!

There were some MPT changes in 2.6.25rc5 so thats the latest kernel I've tried. The errors during boot change to a bit more verbose but thats about it. Unfortunately I don't have a serial terminal with me anymore so cannot capture these errors but it was something about an "unexpected doorbell" with 2.6.24 and nothing memorable with .25. Long story short tho, googling the errors provides no solutions and the little I find points to the controller being too slow to initialize somehow.

I'm running out of ideas here and the server is burning fans like theres no tomorrow (ACPI taking everything it can) so is my only option to downgrade to 2.6.29 (and downgrade udev, lvm2, so on and on and on)? I can't believe I'm the only one for whom this has been broken for several minor versions.

Kernels tried:

- 2.6.29-gentoo (live disk) - works, blazing fast initialization
- 2.6.32-gentoo-r7 - random boot failures and successes
- 2.6.34-gentoo-r1 - same
- 2.6.35-rc5 vanilla - same, better errors, zero useful google results.

I'm not very keen on longshot attempts since it can take a couple of hours of panic-loops to get the machine booted up again and the server functions cannot be transferred to another machine. Also, I'm a bit hesitant to mention this, but the boot has only ever succeeded when a serial cable with something at the other end is connected. At first it was the testing serial terminal and now its just a connection to a UPS.

Attached: bootlog of succesfull-ish boot with 2.6.34 (had to cut some out to make the sizelimit):

Code:

Linux version 2.6.34-gentoo-r1 (root@livecd) (gcc version 4.3.4 (Gentoo Hardened 4.3.4 p1.1, pie-10.1.5) ) #1 SMP Sun Jul 18 18:54:48 EEST 2010
