I downloaded the KDE version, now I'd like the gnome version. And does fedora have a package management similar to ubuntu like 'sudo apt-get install firefox'? I'd like to know.

I messed up at some point. Now, most apt operations result in errors.

Is there any way to fix this, or is my package managment permanently broken?
I just want to get to the point where apt isn't returning errors, because at some point I will want to upgrade to 10.04. This is just too risky with broken apt.
So, how do I switch from Gnome to KDE safely? Every time I attempt this, I crash the whole thing and have to start over.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI noticed that in Fedora 15 Beta when you choose a minimal install then add ONLY the defaults of the "GNOME Desktop" package, you will get this error: gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 has a required package:
system-backgrounds-gnome
When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?
I'm having issues with the gnome-packagekit not working as a user. It runs fine as root but I don't want to have to login each time to run it.
The gnome-packagekit used to ask for root password but has stopped doing so. Anyone remember or have a fix for this?
The cancel button does not work either, I need to close with the X for the window...

I have upgraded my Laptop from Fedora12 to Fedora 13 via DVD image (x64 version). After the upgrade, I tried to update via YUM every package that still needed upgrade (especially nvidia drivers), and I got

So, I tried to delete and reimport the rpmfusion repos, but when I go to this page:

and try to install the RPMs, it only allows me to open them with Archive Manager!
So I looked into GNOME menus and... damn, apparently I can't find Package manager anymore!
Where did it go? and more importantly, why can't I install RPMs anymore? Can anyone enlight me on what went wrong?
Being the fool that I am, I forgot the good old terminal. I have still to nail down in my brain that going by terminal always works better than GUI. Using RPM -Uvh I managed to re-import all repos whose GPG key wasn't signed, and so I finally can upgrade my packages.
Package Manager is missing from GNOME. I have a couple of packages that I installed outside from repositories (they are SongBird and PersonalBrain), and I want to upgrade one (SongBird) and delete the other (PersonalBrain) but since I am in no way an expert when it comes to use the Terminal, I don't know how to uninstall them both (and then reinstall an upgraded version of SongBird).
can anyone please tell me which package provides the gnome system monitor applet (the one which can display cpu load and disk I/O in the tray)?I run XFCE on F14/x64 and would like to display it using the XfApplet.
What i've tried already:
*) Installed the "GNOME Desktop Environment" --> Nothing changed
*) did a yum provides "/usr/lib64/bonobo/servers/*" to check which packages are providing applets - didn't found anything which sounds like the system monitor applet
The XfApplet shows up a bunch of available applets but not the system monitor ...
Why is this going on? I use this machine to watch media like heck I would remove these files and break 50%+ of my functionality. There is a whole pile of "red" entries in this repo and it's all multimedia stuff mostly.

For these programs, ssh without password prompt in console is required. So far, I did the method described here: [URL]... with keys distributed at each node. However, imagine a new users needs to be created:
1. Creating user at every node.
2. Create key at every node
3. Distribute key to every node
Makes password prompt threetimes, for 50 nodes - quite a lot. The students dont like that really much, me neither. What I am asking for is any help to make this more comfortable. I am not really a system admin, but more a researcher with some knowledge in admin tasks. Actually, I would like to use a ldap authetication, were passwords are stored centrally. When the user first logs in to a machine, the home directory should be created. I think I can manage it to work.

I just installed opensuse11.4 from a livecd and would like to know how to change between the distros. Not sure if I worded that right seeing as i am not 100 percent clear what a distro is. This is my first day ever on linux.

Ever since I upgraded to Natty / 11.04, the quality of my desktop experience has dropped sharply.
One thing that effect me greatly is that I can no longer conveniently switch my network proxy on or off system-wide with single click.
Back in Maverick / 10.10, I could launch gnome-network-properties and switch it back and forth depends rather I am at work or at home.
I have found a similar application, "gnome-control-center network," on the surface of it, it seems to replace "gnome-network-properties" in Maverick. Except that this application doesn't seems do ANYTHING.
As result, I am having the hardest time switching my proxy settings, as I have to do so per application basis (gpodder, pidgin, aptitude, thunderbird / firefox, etc).
ps. I am using Gnome "classic" but Gnome 3 suffers the same issue
Fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04, Gnome session fails to start. Gnome-failsafe and XFCE work great. xsession-errors: [URL].... i also cannot switch between ttys, if i do video becomes blured to the point of unreadable. I think this is an issue with X. I have tried the generic kernel (non-pae) with noapic and apci=off with no results.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi have Linux Mint, i was playing around with GTK+3.0, i rebooted then i wanted to switch desktop environments.i clicked the log off button but i saw the character 'E' appear all over the screen. everything just stopped at that point. i had to reboot. after rebooting i installed KDE with aptitude then changed from gdm to kdm. my computer would not boot. i burned a Ubuntu rescue remix live cd and reverted back to gdm. i can now boot. i ran Code:make uninstallin an attempt to revert back to GTK+2, it claimed to work. i rebooted GTK-3.0 was still installed. my desktop is very ugly. i can not change desktop environments and themes do not work at all, nor can i change colors. i want my old GUI back
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu desktop, since I had been running my server as Ubuntu Server on a guest OS on Windows 7 and never really used the Windows part of the computer. Since then, I've been unable to use the mouse in a graphical environment for longer than a few minutes without it starting to act crazy. The mouse moves around normally, but won't respond to clicks (left, middle, or right) but the keyboard shortcuts still work. I'm not sure if things have changed since I last used Gnome though, but Alt+Tab is not working for me either when this happens. Sometimes, the active window is even behind another window, and isn't pulled to the foreground.
After a bit of frustrated clicking and jamming of buttons on the keyboard, sometimes the mouse kind of starts working because I'll notice a right click menu open. But, I am still unable to move windows or click on them to bring them to the foreground, and my mouse presses only work on the current window. And then, eventually, after about a minute or so, it'll stop respond again too.
I saw in one thread that someone had dead spaces where he couldn't click, so he installed and ran Gnome and that fixed it, but I tried using Ubuntu Classic and it is still giving me the same behavior. I'm actually posting this message now in links, because I can't use Firefox or Chrome well enough when it's hidden behind other windows.
I'm trying to get cheops-ng installed. It needs a few packages that I can't seem to get installed. One needs the other and it seems to be taking me in a circle. It starts asking for libgnomes32, when I try installing this it asks for gnome-lib-data and then gnome-bin
I get to gnome-bin and the only package I can find is the i386 version. I finally find an amd64 package that us supposed to be correct but here's the kicker. it brings me back to the libgnome32.. I try a few more and ultimatly takes me back to the gnome-bin It's a never ending cycle between these same librarys. I can't find gnome-do-docklets for 11.3 in software search, there is for 11.2 and for factory, And I'm curious , is it just that no one did the packaging for 11.3 or is there another reason? and how can I install it, can I install the 11.2 package?
