General :: Which Package Do The Extra Applets In Gnome?
Jun 4, 2010
I have a problem, I'm making my own Distro (I hope it'll be cool :P) and I have some problems,
1. What should I still install? What packages should be in? (for normal use)
2. What should I do to make system automatically find sound when start?
3. Which application/command starts a window, where is logout button, turn off etc. in Gnome?
4. Which package do the extra applets in Gnome?

The clock applet and indicator applet in Gnome garble up from time to time. I have 2 Ubuntu installations at home and several others at work, some 32-bit and some 64-bit, all exhibiting the same issue occasionally. I think it's a bug in the Gnome panel. In the attached screenshot you can see an example of how the time in the clock applet is garbled up.
It's not always the clock that is affected, some other times it's the login name, the weather, or the shutdown button... Worst case, the shutdown button becomes totally invisible preventing me to log off (workaround: use the three-fingered salute).

It seems like every few times that I log into Fedora 12, running Gnome, my Panel Applets will move, re-arrange, or get deleted. For example, this morning when I logged in, my Multiple Desktop Selector was gone. I had to re-add it to the bottom panel. Yesterday when i logged in, my top panel had its applets re-arranged, instead of A B C, they were in the order B C A with an extra space at the end.
Any ideas what is going on here? Or anyone experiencing the same thing? Or is this just the Gnome applet location uncertaintly principle?

Just upgraded a dual monitor install of ubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04, reverted to ubuntu-classic (gnome desktop), changed to metacity window manager, but the panel applets (clock, window liet, notifications etc..) only run on ONE of the two screens (:0.0 and :0.1), the other screen they always crash when I try to add them to the panel. how do i get applets to run on BOTH screens at the same time like they used to.

I have found that the package "ubuntu-wallpapers-extra" appears to be the culprit in imposing a system-wide new default of a particular wallpaper background image on all users (both those already added and those yet to be added) as well as the login screen. It can be overridden. The problem is, it has to be overridden.
Anyone know of a way I can block any such changes from happening? If not that, what about a tool that will automatically revert such changes. The goal is so that users (and the login context) won't need an explicit background image to be set and when so, will get the image that was the default at install time.

When I'm running, I like to just do a base install to start, so that, I can go from there, only added things that I need. I just did a Base install of Fedora 14 x86_64, selecting only the "Base" package, and "vim-enhanced". But, when running a grouplist, it comes back with this...
Code:
[root@fcdesktop01 ~]# yum grouplist
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Adding en_US to language list
Setting up Group Process
[code]...
I don't see why these extra groups are included, when all I asked for was Base and vim?

Adding extra spell check library's in FC 11 Gnome is really easy.
Open gnome terminal.
Su to root or use sudo :
# su
Search with yum to your language:
# yum search hunspell
<snip long output list with different languages>
hunspell-nl.noarch : Dutch hunspell dictionaries
I want the Dutch hunspell dictionary, but you fill out the right language for the language support you want: # yum install hunspell-nl
This will install the dutch hunspell dictionary or the dictionary of your choice. After you installed this dictionary it will be immediately available in gnome apps and Evolution.

there are 2 related to 11.3: openSUSE_11.3/ and openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/ Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra they are not listed as official kde4 repos here KDE repositories - openSUSE, but they are in the same directory structure on the build service so it would assume they are official (what ever official means) They have rpm's I didn't see in community and playground (at least for 11.3) such as audex and clementine I would guess that they are for the stable and factory versions of KDE4 but then shouldn't there be a 3rd for unstable if this was the case? Or do they refer to the distro, 11.3 stable and 11.3 factory

I was browsing /usr/share/icons/ and noted that there were several "extra" GNOME themes sitting there that I did not need, so I deleted them. Yes, I know it was a bad idea.I'm now left with a broken KDE desktop. Several icons, such as VLC and Rhythmbox, now appear as question marks. Synaptic doesn't even have the little boxes that you can click to install/remove packages (but you can still click in the area and manage packages).I reinstalled the extra themes, but no luck. I must have removed an icon set that I shouldn't have. I can't restore the files from my Trash because I used the CLI to remove them.

I noticed that in Fedora 15 Beta when you choose a minimal install then add ONLY the defaults of the "GNOME Desktop" package, you will get this error: gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 has a required package:
system-backgrounds-gnome
When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?

//}'
sed: -e expression #1, char 10: extra characters after command
I want to understand what is wrong with my command line. When I can do the some of following in a script but not in a command line. I have been working through the tutorial at [URL]. When I got stuck at the section Working with Multiple Lines. These script works fine.
#!/bin/sh
sed '
# look for a "#" at the end of the line
/#$/ {
# Found one - now read in the next line
N
# delete the "#" and the new line character,
s/#
//
}' file
In my case I am looking for or return ^M.
#!/bin/sh
sed '
# look for a "#" at the end of the line
/
$/ {
# Found one - now read in the next line
N
# delete the "#" and the new line character,
s/
//
}' file
The problem is when I try to convert it to a single line shell command it gives me an errors.
sed '/
$/ {N s/

sed: -e expression #1, char 10: extra characters after command
sed '/
$/{N s/
//}'
sed: -e expression #1, char 9: extra characters after command
sed '/
$/{Ns/
//}'
sed: -e expression #1, char 8: extra characters after command
I want to understand what is wrong with my command line. When I can do the following in a script but not in a command line. I have created a sed script to do the work I want.

However I can not increase the size of /dev/sda5 - I can only shrink it.
Do I need to reboot and then try?

I have a directory (Linux user) with a number of files which contain an added [!] to the end of each file name so that each file reads out as:
foo something [!].zip
bar something [!].zip
helloworld [!].zip
etc.
What is the quickest way to batch rename these to remove the ending [!] character combination from these file names?

I've got an old Xbox set-up as a NAS. Its running Xebian with samba and SWAT. All seems to work with the other PCs on the network. I have just bought a smartbox FetchTV box to watch HD freeview TV. This will also play media stored on the network but I need a dlna server. Can I make my Xbox do this? Is it something in samba or do I need some extra software?

I'm having issues with the gnome-packagekit not working as a user. It runs fine as root but I don't want to have to login each time to run it.
The gnome-packagekit used to ask for root password but has stopped doing so. Anyone remember or have a fix for this?
The cancel button does not work either, I need to close with the X for the window...
It now gives this error.. Authorization Failed You have failed to provide correct authentication

I'm trying to get cheops-ng installed. It needs a few packages that I can't seem to get installed. One needs the other and it seems to be taking me in a circle. It starts asking for libgnomes32, when I try installing this it asks for gnome-lib-data and then gnome-bin
I get to gnome-bin and the only package I can find is the i386 version. I finally find an amd64 package that us supposed to be correct but here's the kicker. it brings me back to the libgnome32.. I try a few more and ultimatly takes me back to the gnome-bin It's a never ending cycle between these same librarys. After upgrade from MDV 2009.1 to MDV 2010 a bunch of available kernels that can be selected are listed at boot. I think that these are still installed but I really don't need them listed. I would like to get rid of the list of extras. I've had a look at /boot/grub but I can't figure out what.

I need to read some data from a web server and output to a serial port on the local machine. I was attempting to use the following command:
Code:
But the device attached to the serial port (a plate embosser) acts as though there is an extra newline after each line of data.
It parses the data sent according to it's own format, which includes a format string in <> followed by a data block containing one data field per line, with the whole block surrounded by <>,
For example:
Code:
seems to output as though it were:
Code:
I can verify that the web server is outputting the former (and it looks correct if I send the wget output to console).
