Ubuntu :: Package Gnome-bin Amd64?

Apr 7, 2010

I'm trying to get cheops-ng installed. It needs a few packages that I can't seem to get installed. One needs the other and it seems to be taking me in a circle. It starts asking for libgnomes32, when I try installing this it asks for gnome-lib-data and then gnome-bin

I get to gnome-bin and the only package I can find is the i386 version. I finally find an amd64 package that us supposed to be correct but here's the kicker. it brings me back to the libgnome32.. I try a few more and ultimatly takes me back to the gnome-bin It's a never ending cycle between these same librarys. Linux sysadmin 2.6.31-20-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 12 04:38:19 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Error Generating Package : SuSE/SUSE112-AMD64

Mar 26, 2010

I have been having trouble with installing ATI drivers on my box. I have tried the repository way and that fails due to checksum differences. I want to try the command line way but. every time I run the installer it acts like it worked, then when I close it by clicking Okay I get a message that says the compile has failed.

I am wondering if there is a kernel setting that needs to be changed? The output error log has the following output:

tmp/ati.hXMXES Package build failed [Error] Generate Package - error generating package : SuSE/SUSE112-AMD64

Fedora :: Fc14 Amd64 Gnome - Hiding Hidden Files In Dolphin And Showing Full Location In Nautilus?

Apr 4, 2011

Trying the various settings (and noticing ubuntu gnome users recently had the same exact OPPOSITE problem -- they can't SHOW hidden files in dolphin) to hide my hidden files in dolphin is not working. The settings are saved OK, but those damn (ending in tilde, ie "~") files do NOT ever hide! I even see the correct little green recycling symbol on them, indicating they're identified as such, but no actual hiding goes on..

Nautilus, which I've used before (but have grown tired of, and was looking forward to dolphin), also has a weird issue that seems to have appeared with FC13 (I'd been using FC12 'til now mostly because of this) - there's no way (AFAIK) to tell it to show the location; to see it, you have to click Go->Location each time. Previously I could set it to print out the whole file or server path and it would stay that way when I opened new windows.. This is on fresh install & update.. kernel is 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64.

Fedora :: Error Gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 When Choose A Minimal Install Then Add ONLY The Defaults Of The "GNOME Desktop" Package

May 3, 2011

I noticed that in Fedora 15 Beta when you choose a minimal install then add ONLY the defaults of the "GNOME Desktop" package, you will get this error: gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 has a required package:

system-backgrounds-gnome

When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?

Ubuntu Servers :: Package Not Found While Install Gnome-core On 10.04

Jul 29, 2010

I'm having some problems getting the GUI installed in my Server 10.04 installation.

I've installed the Ubuntu server 10.04 32bit with a VMWare player on a Windows XP Pro host. Everything seems to have gone ok but at the end of the install it said that VMWare items are being installed and while that happens I can only use the terminal mode or I could wait for the GUI to load. Well the GUI never loaded so I logged in through the terminal.

I realized immediately that I'm over my head as I'm more familiar with DOS rather than bash or the terminal commands of Ubuntu. So I tried to look up on the internet (from my host machine) on how to start or install the GUI interface for the server. I've found lots of things that show commands like:

sudo apt-get install gnome gdm

or

sudo aptitude install gnome-core

but in all cases I get a message that the package is not found. So I'm wondering how do I find the package so that I can install this?

Fedora Installation :: No Package Manager In GNOME After Upgrade?

Jun 9, 2010

I have upgraded my Laptop from Fedora12 to Fedora 13 via DVD image (x64 version). After the upgrade, I tried to update via YUM every package that still needed upgrade (especially nvidia drivers), and I got

[Errno 14] Could not open/read file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-rpmfusion-nonfree-fedora-13-x86_64

So, I tried to delete and reimport the rpmfusion repos, but when I go to this page:

[URL]

and try to install the RPMs, it only allows me to open them with Archive Manager!
So I looked into GNOME menus and... damn, apparently I can't find Package manager anymore!
Where did it go? and more importantly, why can't I install RPMs anymore? Can anyone enlight me on what went wrong?

Being the fool that I am, I forgot the good old terminal. I have still to nail down in my brain that going by terminal always works better than GUI. Using RPM -Uvh I managed to re-import all repos whose GPG key wasn't signed, and so I finally can upgrade my packages.

Package Manager is missing from GNOME. I have a couple of packages that I installed outside from repositories (they are SongBird and PersonalBrain), and I want to upgrade one (SongBird) and delete the other (PersonalBrain) but since I am in no way an expert when it comes to use the Terminal, I don't know how to uninstall them both (and then reinstall an upgraded version of SongBird).

OpenSUSE :: Repopulate Package Information After System Crash And Restarting From Gnome

Feb 16, 2010

I have upgraded my laptop to OpenSuse 11.2 few weeks ago. It was fine until last Tuesday, when a system crash occurred during a kernel security update. I think something went wrong with my network connection. I was working on my code and suddenly I lost my base tools such as /bin/ls and /bin/cd. So I tried to restart and got a kernel panic as my kernel was partially broken.

I tried rescue the system, however it did not work. After that I thought I could fix it by reinstalling the OS with minimal server configuration over my existing root partition. (Since I didnt have any other computer or live cd at that time and I was rushing for a demo, I could not reinstall the missing components one by one. And reinstalling the minimal server made sense then )Almost everything went fine ( i needed to do little things like creating gdm user). Now I can use my system and all my applications. But as expected, the pre installed packages in my system now cannot be seen by YaST Software Manager. Is there a way to repopulate the package list?

Another question is, I cannot restart the computer from a Gnome session. Whenever I restart or shutdown, i go back to the login screen, then I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 which starts the restart progress. How can I fix this?

Debian :: Only Installed Base System, Doesn't Find Package "gnome"?

Well the topic name says it all. But it still seems to be the easiest option. When I try "Debian GNU/Linux on CDs" I can't get online. I've tried searching your forums for this and it seems to happen to a lot of people but I still can't find a solution in any of those threads

Ubuntu :: 32-bit On AMD64 - Difference In Settings?

Aug 2, 2010

On U's download page, Canonical says that the 64-bit version of U is not advised "for daily use," i.e., for the general public, I assume. I'd love to know why they don't advise for general use the 64-bit version, even on 64-bit machines. Is it because of the difficulty of getting the 64-bit version of Flash and other, similar problems, or is it because of any inherent instability?

I installed the 64-bit version on my newly built (not new, but not too old equipment) AMD64 machine in late April or early May. Then, about a 1 1/2 month later, after downloading the routine updates, I clicked on Restart, as required. It began installing the updates, then, after about 2-3 seconds, it completely crashed--completely! Now no recovery tool can even see the partition it's on, though Gparted shows the OS/fs still there.

I'm trying to decide what to do about that. Secondly, I'd like to know if there's any difference between the coding of the settings for the apps in the two (home is on a separate partition). That is, can I replace my 64-bit U with a 32-bit one and keep/use my dot folders from before?
