My SUSE installation used GNOME as its default GUI. I finally installed KDE 4 as well. How do I switch between them? Specifically, how can I get XDM or KDM with an option to select the GUI per user (like it is done on Solaris)?

Gnome-failsafe and XFCE work great. xsession-errors: [URL].... i also cannot switch between ttys, if i do video becomes blured to the point of unreadable. I think this is an issue with X. I have tried the generic kernel (non-pae) with noapic and apci=off with no results.

I am using some unstable set of kde packages with opensuse 11.2-i586, at the moment the version number is
KDE 4.4.62 (KDE 4.5 >= 20100203).
That I have these packages is due to some misconfiguration / error, and I would like to replace them with something stable, say kde 4.4.1. I had a look into yast, found an option like "use these (kde 4.4) packages as system packages", but run into numerous compatability issues afterwards so that I can't make the switch.
So my question is: How can I replace the unstable kde 4.5 packages with kde 4.4.1? I don't know suse very well, so if there is some step-by-step description available somewhere

But if I also try to use kdm, nothing works. I see the kdm login screen without any users. Autologin isn't set in system settings. Any idea how to reset all the kdm settings to default? View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen my computer is going down for hibernation (ram2disk) he safes the session corretly to the disk and the statusbar reaches 100%, but the computer and screen leaves on. Maybe some acpi troubles?
It is just that the computer won't switch off so that I have to press the OnButton 3sec. When I start again the session is sucessfully restored.
i dont have much of command line experience with linux.can i setup opensuse server in such a way that i do all my configurations in gui mode and then switch the server to no gui mode as to free up resources.

I have three Suse Linux pcs on my network.
I'll call them desktop, media center and laptop.
I am logged in to my desktop , I want to open a new session and log in to my media center.
From GUI, I select application launcher - leave -switch user and get a fresh kdm greeter screen.
On the Greeter screen, I select Menu - Remote Login
A window opens displaying three machines - my desktop, my laptop and my media center.
When I move the mouse into the new window to select the media center as the new target machine, the window immediately closes.
I have Xdmcp access enabled in kdmrc on all three systems(and rebooted).
This did work fine back when I was on KDE45 and KDE46.
Is there a new permission or setting now under KDE47?

Ever since I upgraded to Natty / 11.04, the quality of my desktop experience has dropped sharply.
One thing that effect me greatly is that I can no longer conveniently switch my network proxy on or off system-wide with single click.
Back in Maverick / 10.10, I could launch gnome-network-properties and switch it back and forth depends rather I am at work or at home.
I have found a similar application, "gnome-control-center network," on the surface of it, it seems to replace "gnome-network-properties" in Maverick. Except that this application doesn't seems do ANYTHING.
As result, I am having the hardest time switching my proxy settings, as I have to do so per application basis (gpodder, pidgin, aptitude, thunderbird / firefox, etc).
ps. I am using Gnome "classic" but Gnome 3 suffers the same issue
I have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have Linux Mint, i was playing around with GTK+3.0, i rebooted then i wanted to switch desktop environments.i clicked the log off button but i saw the character 'E' appear all over the screen. everything just stopped at that point. i had to reboot. after rebooting i installed KDE with aptitude then changed from gdm to kdm. my computer would not boot. i burned a Ubuntu rescue remix live cd and reverted back to gdm. i can now boot. i ran Code:make uninstallin an attempt to revert back to GTK+2, it claimed to work. i rebooted GTK-3.0 was still installed. my desktop is very ugly. i can not change desktop environments and themes do not work at all, nor can i change colors. i want my old GUI back
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu desktop, since I had been running my server as Ubuntu Server on a guest OS on Windows 7 and never really used the Windows part of the computer. Since then, I've been unable to use the mouse in a graphical environment for longer than a few minutes without it starting to act crazy. The mouse moves around normally, but won't respond to clicks (left, middle, or right) but the keyboard shortcuts still work. I'm not sure if things have changed since I last used Gnome though, but Alt+Tab is not working for me either when this happens. Sometimes, the active window is even behind another window, and isn't pulled to the foreground.
After a bit of frustrated clicking and jamming of buttons on the keyboard, sometimes the mouse kind of starts working because I'll notice a right click menu open. But, I am still unable to move windows or click on them to bring them to the foreground, and my mouse presses only work on the current window. And then, eventually, after about a minute or so, it'll stop respond again too.
I saw in one thread that someone had dead spaces where he couldn't click, so he installed and ran Gnome and that fixed it, but I tried using Ubuntu Classic and it is still giving me the same behavior. I'm actually posting this message now in links, because I can't use Firefox or Chrome well enough when it's hidden behind other windows.
i'm trying to install my updates through install/remove software in gnome opensuse, but when I click apply everything just disappears, can I install them some other way?

All I can get are errors saying cang find kernel or error like that. I have used linux and windows environment. The iso I am using is fine, I am sure because I have instaled it on two pcs. Iso gnome-live >> usb (bootable to install)
